The Taco Stand serves incredible tacos just up the street from the beach, and that perfectly captures what makes SoCal such an amazing place to live. We tried almost every taco and the standouts were the Baja and Sonora. The fish in the Baja was perfectly fried. It tasted so fresh and airy. The steak in the Sonora was fatty deliciousness and the melted cheese brought things to another level. We waited in line for 30 min and close to another 10 min for our food to come out. The long wait made our expectations even higher than they already were, but the food still managed to impress us. I highly recommend The Taco Stand! Can't wait to come back!
As my first visit to SD in a long, long time, I felt it was necessary to visit one of the most iconic stops in the city! We have The Taco Stand in Las Vegas, but there is truly something special about getting delicious tacos by the water. The wait could get very tedious. The line wraps around the building into the parking lot with cars pulling in & out. You also wait a bit for your food. Compared to the location here in Vegas where I could be in and out in 5 minutes, spending nearly an hour standing around is less than ideal on a trip :/ But....... the food is unfortunately very very delicious. AND THE CHURROS! so yummy and sweet. My favorite is the Baja Taco. An absolute gem.
3.5 The small restaurant had a long line that moved quickly. Even the wait for the food after ordering was not long. I had the mushroom/vegan taco. The tortilla was great. The mushrooms were sautéed with garlic and were flavorful. What was missing was the spices and freshness of a sea side taco stand. There was a bit of cilantro and a dollop of avocado - but no salsa nor chili powder. I didn't mind the messiness of the presentation. Overall a solid taco choice.
I'll start out by saying the line is always long at this place... but I can confirm.. that it is SO worth the wait. Once you order your food you don't wait more than 10-12 minutes, even with how packed it is. Workers are friendly, seating area available inside and out, and the food it to die for. The pastor tacos were the winner for me and my boyfriend, with the carne asada being a CLOSE second. The juiciness and sauce on the pastor was crazy. The guac on the asada was also so delicious. All in all, PLEASE TRY IT!!
Decided to try the taco stand on a Saturday morning after a walk in downtown La Jolla. The spot can be a little walk from the downtown. The spot was busy in the morning so recommended getting there early. The service was speedy. My burrito was good though it could use a little more flavor. The salsa bar had plenty of salsa options depending on the spice palate. The prices are good for the portions. Overall a good experience!
Tasty tasty tacos that took about an hour to get. Self serve salsa and toppings bar which is awesome, the different sauces all added something yummy. Had the fish and beef taco which were so much better than a few other places during my trip. My complaint mostly is the wait. I get it, we came on a Saturday but the line barely budged, although when you're inside you can see they're producing tacos and packing them really quickly so what it looks like is they're doing a lot of mobile orders in between standing customers which to me isn't great. Maybe turn off mobile ordering on busy days and treat the people waiting in line first?
the taco stand: they have a few locations down in oc and sd, but we went to the la jolla one. i rlly liked the tortillas and they pack her up!! it is like $4 for a taco but def worth it. meats were juicy and tender + they have a sauce bar in the back w unlimited sauce, pickled onions, and pico de gallo. i def wanna come back for their cali burrito bc ive seen so many videos abt it. warning tho, seating is limited inside and no bathrooms. service was efficient but come early bc lines can get long.
Went on a Sunday around dinner time and this place was POPPING. We ordered online for pickup and still had to wait about 15 minutes when we got there, but honestly good thing we did because the line to order was literally out the door and down the block. The workers were BUSY. Not a ton of seating inside, but we just took our food to the beach and had a mini picnic, which made it way better anyway. They also have a self-serve sauce bar, which I always appreciate. We got carne asada tacos, al pastor tacos, and carne asada fries. The carne asada was solid. Good flavor, decent sized pieces, not dry or chewy, actually pretty tender. The al pastor was kinda underwhelming though. A little dry and just didn't hit the same (flavor-wise). Also not a huge fan of raw onions and they cut them pretty big, so it was a bit overpowering. The fries were really good texture wise, and the steak was just as good as the tacos. Only thing is the nacho sauce on top was a bit much for me. Made everything kinda soggy toward the end. One thing I will say, they are VERY generous with the guac, and it actually tasted really good too. But I still can't get over the price... ~$5 per taco is kinda crazy. I get that they load them up, but still.
This is hands-down the best tacos ever. They make their corn tortillas fresh in-house, the meats are deliciously grilled, and their unlimited salsa bar is filled with delicious pico de gallo, salsas, limes and pickled onions. Although it does take some time when it's busy to get your food, it is so so worth it. There is plenty of street parking a few blocks down by the neighborhoods. The service is fast and the atmosphere bustling. Only bad thing I can say is there is not bathroom. The tacos are the best I've ever had in the States though, so full of fillings and fresh! The steak and shrimp fries are also delicious and the burritos are highly recommended as well.
This was a taco stand alright because we spent most of our time standing and waiting. That being said, the food tasted so good that it was almost worth it. The parking lot is pretty tiny--especially considering how it's shared by several restaurants. We must have come at the right time though because one spot actually opened up right when we got there! The line never let up the entire time I was there even though it was already well past lunch time on a weekday when we arrived. I think we waited for about an hour before even taking our order. There was plenty of seating both inside and out, but there were just so many people that not everyone had a seat. Not only that, but many of the people who were sitting were still waiting for their food. After ordering, I think we waited another 30 minutes for the food to be done too. Luckily, some people left and we were able to take their seats before the food was done. The entire menu looked really interesting and yummy, so it was hard to make a decision. There was a small fridge by the doorway that was full of alcohol and soda in glass bottles. They even had churros being fried right next to the register! I ended up going with three soft tacos--baja, carne asada, and al pastor. Each taco was loaded with plenty of things already, but there was also a sizeable sauce/salsa/topping bar in the back to get even more! The tacos were all a pretty good size. They were packed with flavor and cooked perfectly. The fish in the baja taco was especially delicious. The fish was fried to perfection It's too bad that this place is so far away from where I live. If I lived nearby, then I would try to find the slow hours and then go all the time!
So the long lines and the social media definitely has a hand in the popularity of this place is it worth lining up for well I think that answer depends on the person but our experience is definitely one of the most tastiest that we have been to any Mexican restaurant somehow the meat is very very smoky flavor and one of the favorite items is the asada fries and definitely get the churro since you're standing in line for such a long time you might as well go all out limited seating area in the front outside in a few tables inside the salsa and sauce bar definitely gives a lot of variety and definitely you need to get that up there's always a line and very limited parking what better place to eat at
The Taco Stand was tasty and good but not quite worth the hype in my opinion. We were lucky enough to come when there was no line to order, and we got at least one of each taco except for the mushroom and Sonora. My favorites were the spicy shrimp, Baja battered fish, and carne asada, and the tacos tasted clean and not greasy. The meats were flavorful, and the fresh housemade corn tortillas were great. The grilled fish was a bit dry and overcooked. The self-service salsa bar was cramped and inefficient in the corner, but I liked the variety of salsas and pickled onions, jalapenos, and carrots. I wish they had more specialty cuts like cabeza or lengua, but I'm still glad I tried The Taco Stand! read more
The Taco Stand is a must for my husband and me whenever we're in Southern California. I actually planned our most recent vacation rental in La Jolla based on how close it was to this place. Be prepared for a line during the lunch or dinner rush--but the food is absolutely worth the wait. The menu includes tacos, burritos, volcanes, and quesadillas, but the tacos are the real star. The tortillas are made in-house, and the fresh salsa bar lets you customize each bite. Everything tastes incredibly fresh with bold, vibrant flavors. My favorites are the fish tacos--both the grilled fish and the Baja (fried fish). The fish is always fresh, well seasoned, and the Baja version has a perfectly crispy bite. The al pastor (pork with pineapple) is a close second and has a great sweet and savory balance. The avocado is always perfectly ripe, and the street corn and guacamole are excellent. My only small critique: the horchata was very sweet and seemed to be made from a mix rather than fresh. Still, this spot is always a must-visit for us when we're in the area. TLDR: A chain's challenge is to maintain the size and quality of the food. Although they managed to match the same flavor as the other branches I've been to, I feel that they struggled with size uniformity, and the standards of how they served the food. Mar y Tierra Burrito - It's still the best light burrito that I've ever had. The lack of rice and beans inside meant that you're consuming a good balance of steak, shrimp, and coleslaw with a very nice sauce. My issue is that the group ordered 3, and all 3 were different sizes. Baja Taco - It's really hard to beat the fried fish taco in general. This place's version is nice because the batter is light, and you still get to enjoy everything in the taco. Grilled Pescado Taco - The healthier option for people who want fish but don't want to eat fried food. Some would argue that it tastes better too, but I think it's comparing apples to oranges. Two issues, the first one is that they can't seem to decide if they want the taco wrapped in a piece of paper or laid out flat. The more concerning issue is that one of our tortillas had a funky smell, so we had to let it go and just make do with the filling. Service - It's self service after you get your order. You get your food and help yourself with the drinks and sauces, just like all the other branches. Ambiance - I think this is the worst one in terms of the handful of branches I've been to. The inside is pretty normal and fine, but the outside isn't a great place to eat. It's a dirty parking area of a business strip with a bunch of flies and birds. Right away you'll notice a line out the door. Right after the sunset this is a perfect place to grab some food. Can't decide between two tacos? Get both! It's not very big inside, so share a table or take it outside with you. When I came, they were out of the corn. read more
The line was super long and out the door when we visited on Labor Day weekend around 12:30pm. We waited about 30 minutes to order and another 45 minutes to receive our food--honestly not bad considering the amount of people. One thing that I wish I knew ahead of time is that you can order online. We were originally promised a 15 minute wait for food after we ordered, but it seemed like they suddenly got slammed with online orders as we saw a bunch of people grabbing food from the pick up window that we had not previously seen in line. So order online and skip the waiting! We ordered the california burrito and the mar y tierra burrito, and both were delicious but not the best I have ever had--that honor belongs to another taco/burrito shop that I visited years ago on the south side of San Diego. The steak is done well and the shrimp is fresh! The other burrito toppings are great as well and their condiment bar allows you to customize each bite as you go. My favorite salsas were the cilantro sauce and pickled onions. Like I mentioned earlier, this restaurant can get quite busy and crowded, but they do a very good job of getting people in and out as fast as they can. We had no issues finding seating for our party of 11 as our food was coming out. Parking is a bit of an issue, but we street parked not too far away. Great spot to visit after enjoying La Jolla's beaches! read more

LOVE THIS PLACE! it's always crowded and the seating is not optimal. They recently removed their outside benches to provide room for parking and their neighbor restaurant, so we often take the tacos to go and eat at the beach or in the car. 3 tacos is a good amount per person!!! I go for the fish, steak and chicken - this time the chicken was best! One of my favorite parts is the variety of sauces, so be sure to grab some before you leave for your tacos! But I also want to try their elote next time! read more

Don't let the long line fool you, they're pretty good at getting people in and out quickly and my group of three had no trouble finding somewhere to sit and eat. Definitely worth a try if you're visiting/just moved to SD -- but maybe just a little overrated and overhyped. So manage expectations! We got the al pastor, shrimp and carne asada tacos and the carne asada fries. The shrimp was my favorite for sure, well seasoned and succulent. The carne asada was unfortunately the low light... there was a lot of chewing involved which wasn't great imo. read more

THE TACO STAND @ LA JOLLA I've driven by this place numerous of times, always seeing such a long line. I got curious this time with my friends, so we all decided to go on a Tuesday night, not a line at all so we went straight in. I decided to get Al Pastor (marinated pork), the Elote, and churros. Our total for three tacos, elote, and churros was about $20. Tacos are about $4 each, average price. There is also seating here as well, which is super nice to have. Tables were a bit dirty and sticky, so we used a napkin to remove trash on it. What really sparked my interest of this place was also that you can clearly see the fresh tortillas being made, so it just looks so GOOD. The tacos were decent, it wasn't my favorite, it was pretty dry and I was bummed out where the sauce or the seasoning was on the meat. They have a sauce bar so I added a lot of sauce on it. The elote was cold, and did not taste good. It was my first time, so i imagine it to taste way better than what I had, it was a sour taste, like they used expired mayo. Churros were 15/10, like i'd come back just to get them. They melted in mouth and i loved the white sweet sauce included. Parking is hard; there is only 4 spots next to the place that is also shared with other restaurants. We got lucky and got it, but i'd recommend street parking on a busy weekend. Overall, i'd love to try this place again for the tacos! read more
Next stop on a San Diego taco crawl was The Taco Stand. 3 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon. The line was about 20 people deep and there were no available tables to sit at. Even though there was a sign that said not to grab a table until after ordering, there were lots people saving seats while others in their party were waiting in line. We stood in line for about 15 min before we got to the front to order. After ordering what was left was waiting for our order to be ready.We got to-go since getting a table didn't look promising. Forget trying to get to the salsa bar as there were probably 50 people in line for that. Fast forward 45 min later, our order was finally ready. We brought it back to the hotel to eat. carne asada burrito - 5/5 per husband as this was his order grilled fish taco - 3/5 baja taco (fried fish) - 4/5 chips and guac - 4/5 Overall great Mexican food but not sure if worth the chaos and madness, especially since the restaurant doesn't seem to do much to handle the crowds. read more
The service was great, line was long but fast. I got one Al Pastor, 1 carne asada and 1 pescado taco each. They had a great salsa bar with pickled onions, limes and wide selection of salsas on all spice levels. I always stick to my green salsas since they're usually more mild and creamy. They had one cilantro creamy own and a salsa verde that was tangy with a little kick. The Al pastor was so flavorful, with fresh onions on top, it already was so saucy that it didn't need anything on it. I might have squeezed a little lime on it to cut the grease a bit. That one was my favorite! The carne asada was so juicy! They cut them pretty big so you can really taste the steak and the juicy flavor of the beef. Not your usually chopped up and charred like some other Mexican spots. Was delightful, and I enjoyed that with the green salsas. The fish was my least favorite, the mahi mahi was a little fishy tasting which they tried to mask with the sauce on top it came with. I squeezed a lot of lime on it and added the salsas and managed to finish it even with the fishy taste. One thing I do not do is waste food! I wouldn't come here again, there's just such better taco spots everywhere and this one did not hit the spot. There was seating inside and outside, ambiance was chill and casual. A must-visit spot if you're in La Jolla! We didn't have to wait in line very long so that was nice. It was super busy and loud inside, so we got our food to go and went to the children's pool so our toddler could run around. I got the Baja taco, a crispy beer battered white fish topped with cabbage and a yummy chipotle salsa. My husband enjoyed the Al pastor taco. I got a cheese quesadillas for our daughter as well. We had to end the meal on a sweet note with the freshly made churros, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside! Great meal and friendly service! read more
The food was good, overall score 3.5 We came here based on the reviews. This is a well known place and it was very busy. The food is a mix between authentic taco trucks & Chipotle. The meat was fresh. The tacos are served in paper and foil. I didn't get pictures of the inside because it was busy and my husband ordered. The tacos are pricey, on average $4 each. The service was good. You wait in line, order and try to find a place to wait until they call your name. The ambiance is busy. Lots of college kids and locals eating inside and outside. There is limited seating but you can always tailgate. We ordered: Chicken taco (4/5) Asada taco (3/5) Pastor taco (4/5) Sonora style taco (3/5) Chips & salsa (4/5) 1lb of fresh made chips that day for $3.99. There is a salsa bar inside. The green guac style salsa had great flavor. There is also a red salsa that was a little hotter and had a kick to it. Overall, good food for the location of business. This may be one of the best meals we have ever had. This is worth the wait in line! The staff here are the hardest workers, watching them was incredible, they are a well oiled machine! Freshly made tacos and churros (don't skip the churros, they were perfect!!) The quesadillas and burritos are huge and so flavorful. Tacos absolutely delicious. So many fun salsas to try, the chipotle was our favorite but they were all excellent! Food was so good my husband got again at the airport for one last hoorah before going home. read more
I absolutely love Mexican food so when my friend recommended The Taco Stand, I knew I had to check it out on my trip. My bf and I stopped by on the last day of our SD trip for a very early morning breakfast. Normally, I stick to the usual "breakfast" foods but I'm so glad I tried something new! We got there around 10 am and ordered an al pastor taco, California burrito, and churros. The California burrito was SO good and everything was seasoned to perfection. I didn't try the taco since I don't eat pork but my bf enjoyed it. The churros were good and not too sweet. I would definitely come back here again! Hit up The Taco Stand in La Jolla and just like their other spots, there was a line, but it moved pretty quickly. Seating is super limited, so be ready to grab a spot when you can. That said, it's totally worth it. The al pastor is flavorful and delicious. And the grilled pineapple in it always pushes it over the top. The fries were ok and skippable. Better at other locations. Absolutely love their food! From tacos to burritos to quesadillas and more, they have an amazing selection of Mexican food that is served fresh and made to order! We love their fish tacos, carne asada tacos, mar y Tierra fries, as well as their churros! The prices are so reasonable and the food portions are awesome and very filling! Their salsa bar is epic with red and green salsas, mild, medium, hot and they even have the spiciest macha sauce! Their pickled onions are great as well as their pico de gallo! Service is friendly and prompt and efficient and it's a chill ambiance inside with both indoor and outdoor seating. We waited 1.5 hour at this location in the early afternoon to get to order the food and another 30 mins to pick up the order. While the food is delicious, this location, due to its proximity to La Jolla, might demand a wait longer than expected. We ordered multiple tacos and carne asada is arguably the best with aromatic grill flavor. In terms of management, due to the high consumer demand, it is obvious that quality consistency and management is falling behind as ingredient distribution between tacos became disproportional and salsa stand became chaotic. The canned margaritas is overly sweet and highly priced and therefore do not recommend. read more
This was a must stop for us as east coasters who don't have great tacos by us. We ordered a little bit of everything and our favorite by far was the bean and cheese burrito. Actually still dreaming of this as we speak. The tacos were good but not great. The burrito as well. But seriously do not sleep on the bean and cheese burrito! We loved the salsa bar and bought a bag of freshly fried chips, which were delicious. And the churros were amazing!! Great spot, not great parking or a ton of seating. The taco stand has Amazing tacos and more! There was a line out the door when we arrived and I understand why! This is a casual taco place with very reasonable prices and high quality! We tried the following items: -Al pastor tacos (5/5; delicious! The grilled pineapple is such a smart and tasty addition! Meat flavorful and delicious) -spicy shrimp tacos (5/5! The best shrimp tacos I had my entire SD trip! Just the right amount of spice and perfectly cooked. This was quite delicious) -Baja fish tacos (4.25/5; this was my least favorite taco and it was still quite good! Maybe the fish could have used a bit more seasoning but it was well cooked and the toppings complimented it well) -churros (5/5; omg yes. Fresh, crispy, delicious and that sauce ) -chips and guac (4.25/5; guac is one of my favorite dishes period so my rating reflects that this side was quite solid! Very generous portion for the price that was flavorful and came w good chips) -salsa bar (5/5; try everything! I specially loved their chipotle salsa) Taco stand delivers on everything you want out of a taco place: delicious food at a reasonable price! The line at this place was out the door and, after eating here, it's easy to see why. We got an assortment of things to try -- Al pastor tacos, carne asada tacos, carne asada fries, and a California burrito. We liked the tacos better than the burrito. The al pastor was my favorite -- not super greasy the way al pastor can be, but with melt-in-you-mouth tender meat that was bursting with flavor. I liked this better than the carne asada! The California burrito was good but not the best I've had; stick with the tacos. I liked dousing everything with their house-made pico de gallo as well. The carne asada fries were devoured by my kids, and the fries looked extra crunchy, like they were double fried or dipped in extra batter. This helped them hold up without getting soggy under the bounty of toppings -- sour cream, cheese, salsa, guacamole, and carne asada. We'll be back! Love that there are multiple locations throughout San Diego. read more
I ordered a pescado taco and a Baja taco, both of which were really good. I personally think the Baja one was better! I think I also paid around $10 in total so it was pretty worth it for me. This place has been on my list and it didn't disappoint. They are known for cooking their steak perfectly and as an Al pastor fan, I was skeptical but it did live up to the hype. I got a steak burrito and it was bomb. I also got an al pastor taco and it was so so. We had ordered a California burrito but it came regular, so that's my only complaint. Al pastor quesadilla was better than the taco. Service was speedy for a Friday night and ambiance is grab and go. The salsa bar was bomb -- favorites were chipotle sauce and salsa verde. read more

Where do you park?
There is a very small parking lot shared by other restaurants and shops. You're better off finding parking on the street. We parked around the corner in a neighborhood.

Do they have vegan options?
Very limited. Cactus Taco or Bean Burrito. Not a great place for a vegan.
Do you guys offer takeout?
They do take out, but keep in mind that they don't do phone/online orders on weekends because of how crowded it gets.

Are there any recommend times to visit during the day that's the least busy?!?
I have been there once when visiting San Diego, the family and I got there around 6pm and sat down to eat around 7:15pm. A long wait, yes! But damn was it worth the wait. We cannot wait to stand in line for a long time to eat there again! 😉
Is it safe to eat here for someone with a peanut allergy?
Be sure to let them know beforehand, but I believe you should be ok. I’m almost positive nothing in the menu contains nuts.
