Okay, The Tilted Stick is definitely a geared-to-OBcians dive bar. It's teeny and dirty, but it works. And it's not ridiculously crowded, like most of the bars on Newport. The Stick is definitely A-OK in my book. They have a good selection of draught beers. Mostly local, with a smattering of standard domestics and mainstream imports. Beers are CHEAP. We didn't pay more than $3 a pint. I don't know if that's a happy hour thing, but I was pleased. Wings aren't very good. They were dry and leathery, and the outside was really over-fried. The extrerior skin/breading part had the exact same texture as chicharrones, which was completely gross. The spicy crispy chicken sandwiches ("our best!", they say) were tasty. The chicken was yummy and juicy, the bun was soft, the veggies were fresh. The cajun french fries were delicious. This place is perfect if you're looking for cheap. Four beers, a pile of wings, and two sandwiches, plus tax and tip, for $30-something. The people watching is awesome, even if you get there early. At around 7 last night, some middle-aged local trollop was completely wasted and roaming the bar loudly meowing at a table of fat old guys in polo shirts. After one of them finally attempted to throw her in his truck, caveman-style, half the guys in the bar went to go battle for her honor in the street. Oh, good times. The women's bathroom is DISGUSTING. It makes the restroom at the Arco station down the street look like the Ritz-Carlton Waikiki. Anyway, bottom line: go early, grab cheap beer, and watch local drama. Yay! read more

I'm a man that's quite fond of dive bars. I love them, I would live in one if I could but I don't care for roaches. With that being said, I've been to a ton of dive bars in my day and this place ranks up there in the top 5. Chill locals, great bartender, cheapest drinks imaginable and great food. Awesome Atmosphere. If you're looking for a legit dive, you've found one of the best in san diego. Great food and beer specials. Naturdays are flowing for 2 bucks on Saturdays. You gotta love a good dive bar! I have special place in my heart for the Tilted Stick. And even though there are stools with rips in the seat covers and you may sit at a table and not want lay your hands on it right away it is impossible to find this place anything but awesome. Kind of reminded me of the feel of "The Arizona" back in the day- Not to worry, there is plenty of lighting in the evening so you can see your fellow drinkers. And I wouldn't classify anyone as "trashy" or a "degenerate", they are just OB residents drinking at their local bar-all friendly. We enjoyed delicious rum and diet cokes and although we weren't there for food, there are plenty of good bar snacks to go with whatever you decide to drink. From wings to burgers. It also happens to be right next door to a laundromat so bring a basket of laundry and kill two birds with one stone. The music was current and a perfect fit for this place. I started making this my main hang out when the bartender told me he would show up at 6 a.m. for th World Cup game, if I promised to bring some friends. I did, and he did. And it was glorious. Bar food is bar food, and this place does it well. Some of the fare isn't as good as Tiny's, some of it is better. Plus their kitchen is open late, which is awesome when you're in The Industry and don't get off work until midnight or so... Speaking of The Industry- there are a lot of them in the Stick on any given night, so it ends up being a very friendly and entertaining time. It has an almost Cheers-esque vibe to it on occasions. Especially when you finally finish shaking hands and sit down, only to find your Guinness and Jameson already poured because the bartender saw you rolling in and had it primed... I've seen a little trouble brew here from time to time, but most of the time its a Local who's had two too many and as soon as one of the bartenders calls them out on it, they apologize and leave. Much better than the way I've seen it handled at the Sunshine or various other Newport bars with shitty bouncers (I won't mention names, but it's an Irish bar, it isn't The Harp, and it rhymes with Blalaghers...fuck that place. But I digress...). I've been a bartender at various locations and it doesn't matter if you're paying ten bucks for a Jack and Coke (Seriously Sidebar? Ten bucks?), people sometimes get out of hand. Shit happens. It's how you deal with it that makes the difference, and from what I've seen- Stick Staff always does it right. Solid crowd, solid staff, solid drinks. What more do you need? A billion tv's with every sporting event possible? Oh they have those too. I'm taking one star off because the place has potential, but it's obvious the owner just wants to sit back and collect his check. One of my favorite hole in the wall bars... don't get here to often anymore sadly since I no longer live in the area. Consistently good times! I kept coming back though since that was not the norm thankfully! When I lived in OB I would do my laundry next door and maybe while away my time with some food, a beer and a book! Here's how you can tell there are all kinds of people in San Diego... when reviews can vary this much. Now there is certainly nothing wrong with that, but it is interesting. Was here for a few on a Friday night while in the area to hear some live music. I do think it's cool that you can bring your dog, although I wouldn't dare show up with my Yorkie, because I'm not sure that's quite what this crowd had in mind lol. I don't think I would eat here if I were being paid to, because it just didn't seem clean to me. At all. This bar is awesome. Best fish tacos in OB, cheap booze, and the best clientele you could ask for. There are no d-bags in this bar. If you're nice, you'll likely end up taking a shot with one of the regulars. The owner is a Ravens fan, but aside from that, he's perfect. I literally can't think of a single complaint. And Teddy, one of the bartenders, is one of the best guys you could ask to pour you some whiskey, or just to shoot the shit with. He even offers free cookies to patrons. In a non-sketchy manner. Also, the bathrooms the cleanest in all of San Diego. Complete with a porter who refuses to accept tips. Need a complimentary breath mint, cigarette, or condom? You're in luck. Best bar in OB. I love dive bars and The Tilted Stick certainly fits the bill. What separates the Stick from other dives is that the food is far beyond whatever expectations you might carry into a dive scene. The burgers and wings are very good - arguably the best wings in all of San Diego and easily the best in OB. The ham and cheese sandwich and the chicken sandwiches are all exceptionally tasty. I'm not much of a french fries guy, but the fries at the Stick are awesome. They get some decent local beers on tap, and the mixed drinks are poured with an appropriately heavy hand. Rife with local beach bum color, this is a great OB dive bar. I wish I could visit more often. I live closer to Newport than Voltaire, and that is a sorry excuse for not hitting up the Stick more often. I guess I know where I'm going for a long walk and lunch today read more

What a wonderful surprise this was! We were looking for a place to eat before the fireworks started 7/4/16, everything was closed. Ended up in here because there was literally nowhere else to sit down and eat and get a drink. Ended up eating the BEST Mahi tacos and drinking one of the best Bloody Marys I've ever had while sitting on the back patio with my family and 2 dogs. Not to mention what a sweetheart the blonde woman behind the bar was! First time I ever gave a 50% tip. It was worth it. Next time I'm in OB, I will go out of my way to go back. read more

If I had given up after my first 4-5 late-evening short-lived summer visits to this place it would be stuck with a weak and halfhearted 3 stars. This would be pretty shockingly low considering I have a serious affinity for authentic local dives and immediately found that this place has a dogfriendly patio, very attentive bartenders, and crazy low prices on some good local drafts ($3.50 pints of some Ballast Point and Karl Strauss brews). It would only have been so low because on all those occasions I got hassled a lot and had to deal with very aggressively drunk patrons. REALLY aggressively drunk. Both genders. Just the guys tended to come up and personally annoy me, but the aggressive and loud female drunks were spoiling my experience as well. Since I usually seem to have a good cloak of invisibility, the harassment here was doubly annoying in its unexpected nature. But back to the sequel...Had a great late-happy-hour experience bringing my dog to the patio after work. Great for me, great for the dog...met up with some very friendly fellow dog-owners and their friends, didn't have to leave my seat for a beer and had some great conversations. Then a week later figured I would revisit the later-evening experience since summer is over and it seemed the place should be back to locals-only. Sure enough, same attentive staff and great prices, but no aggressively drunk wackjobs. Actually a fun and friendly small crowd, with a team of ladies doing shots to my left and a couple grounded local/industry guys to my right. Thanks to the inclusive and freebie-happy bartending, this resulted in a couple fun "community shot toast" moments. Now I must admit, I got a couple free shots here, but I never mentioned Yelping or any other reviewing. Pretty sure that free shots are given in an attempt to make it a friendlier and happier atmosphere to retain any female patrons, since the regular crowd seems a bit male-heavy. No opinion on food since I never had any, but the kitchen does look a bit iffy in the sanitation department. read more

Had a seriously awesome time watching a WWE pay-per-view at this bar. It is exactly what you'd think a dive bar in San Diego would be and it's perfect. Even if you're not a huge fan of dive bars (I am, for the record) I think most people would enjoy this place. Lots of beer on tap. I had a delicious peanut butter stout that I wish I could find back home. The food we ordered was surprisingly good- and cheap. Great service and great atmosphere. Favorite dive bar of all time!!! The owner of this place is absolutely amazing and all of his staff is almost as equally good. Shockingly you would think the food is not that great as the bartender is cooking it as well as serving drinks but to great surprise the food is really really good. Stopped in here for a bite after a morning at PB dog beach. I wanted something off the beaten path and this was definitely it. I ordered the full "Philly cheese steak" sandwich. It was not a traditional Philly cheese steak by any means, but it was damn good. It was mixed cheese with chunks of steak and onions on a hot dog bun. Just good dive bar food. We came here because they advertised being dog friendly. It was a cool little stop and the owner seems pretty cool dude also. Worth stopping in and getting some food and drinks.
