Went to this place right after it opened. Had their signature dish, the Elvis. It was shrimp and grits, extra buttery and fantastic. A few trips later there is a new chef, and Elvis has left the building. On roughly 6 visits we have had good service twice. Terrible service twice, and mediocre the rest. Food runs about the same, although never quite terrible. It has never matched our first visit, which was really pretty fantastic. I just happened to be in Milton, GA recently to my surprise, and somehow we happened upon this place. And it was surprisingly good. We were just sort of desperate to finally get lunch and weren't expecting much, but the food here is really good, actually. I'll probably never come here again, just because it's WAY outside my neck of the woods or anywhere else I frequent from time to time, but if I lived in the area, I could see myself as somewhat of a regular. The food here is basically somewhat upscale American with Southern influences, and we just got main courses. I had Jay's shrimp and grits, and my dining companion had the pork Milanese. The shrimp and grits had a real nice melange of flavors, with the shrimp, the bacon, the cheddar grits, and the lemon butter sauce standing out amongst the other flavors of the dish (scimini mushrooms, scallions, and roasted peppers rounding out the dish). It's also gluten free by the way, which means next to nothing to me, but could really come in handy for some, I'm sure. I had a little taste of the pork Milanese, which didn't appeal to me as much as the shrimp and grits, but was still good, and my dining companion sure liked it. I was told that the pork Milanese is even better than the veal version of the dish because there's less fat and it still tastes as good. I had the iced tea (prepared "sweet") to drink and my DC had white wine. I had two glasses of the delicious iced tea and the white wine was also very good. I'd recommend sitting outside on a nice day. The ambiance is pretty nice, the waiter plays "70's" music on his iPod which he has hooked up to the speakers. He has sort of a punk rock look with tattoos and everything, and he told us that he plays in a punk band. The music he plays isn't punk rock, though, which is good IMHO. I have eaten here too many times to count. The place has a cool vibe and sixties decor but is very crowded and noisy. I prefer weather permitting to eat on the porch. It's more spacious and had a beautiful fire place and is dog friendly I highly recommend the hanger steak and shrimp and grits. Even the spaghetti and meatballs are awesome. They have a full bar and a cool crowd, it ranges from 20 something's to late 50-60's. Worth the drive!! read more

I work super close to the Union. I remember when that site used to be a little BBQ and candy joint. I walked there all the time when I was a kid to buy Airheads. It's the closest restaurant to where I make snack money, but I don't generally like going inside the restaurant. For some reason, being in there kind of stresses me out. It's not a very large restaurant and since it has been cold out, everyone was eating inside. That can make eating there a bit stressful because you have to be aware of whether or not you're in someone's way while enjoying your meal. It's a cute little building and I'm sure that going when it's less crowded (midday, like three) would be more relaxed. So, my MO is to order take-out. Their sides are generous portions and they are so delicious! Plus, I think they're reasonably priced. I got the caramelized brussels sprouts and butternut squash (HELL YES SO GOOD), cheesy grits (HNNNNGGG) and jalapeno mac n cheese (BYAHHHH!). My friend got the cheesy grits and fingerling potatoes, which were perfect. Then we split a margherita pizza which was excellent. I've had a lot of bad take-out experiences, but they really know what they're doing. Our food was the perfect temperature and it was ready in 20 minutes. Plus, the staff was really friendly. They treated me like I was just as important as one of their patrons sitting in the restaurant. And one tip: if you order take-out, pick it up at the bar. Who knew you could find fine dining outside the perimeter? The atmosphere at The Union is laid back and casual and a little bit groovy, especially with all the tie-dyed peace signs and the wood-paneled walls that seem straight out of a 70's hustler movie. Definite hidden gem that mixes Southern comfort with fresh ingredients. The salmon with quinoa was a healthy stand out. I came here with some friends on a weekday evening. The small restaurant was packed even on Thursday night. It was still completely full even when we left at close to 10pm. The restaurant must be doing something right to have those types of crowds. Our server was friendly and efficient, and he did a great job handling our very large group. I ordered the goat cheese ravioli which was very good. Then again, I'm obsessed with goat cheese and will like almost any dish that has it. I just wish there was more food in the dish as I was still hungry when I finished. The only negative is the parking situation. It's a small lot that fills quickly. I parked in some dirt lot area up a hill. It rained while I was at the restaurant which turned the dirt into thick mud. Thankfully my SUV has AWD otherwise I probably would've needed a tow truck. read more

This is one of those places that is tucked away. While it is not in the middle of everything, it has everything you would ever want! Great good, awesome service and something that you can enjoy as an adult or a family. My favorite is Grandma's Sedgwick Spaghetti. It is so tasty and warms you right up. If you get a chance, go. My half took me here for a spontaneous celebratory lunch date to break fast and to just spend some time talking and relaxing over lunch. He'd read the great reviews, so we decided to go there bc of the reviews and buzz. We arrived and sat near the fireplace. Ambience was so nice and I love that the patio is enclosed with tent walls so that on cold days you can still sit outside if you'd like. We were excited. We ordered the ahí poke and 2 burgers (again based on the hype). We waited over an hour for our food to arrive. When we arrived there was literally 0 folks in the entire establishment. 0 other than servers. We ordered two burgers medium rare... I don't get it. We had to get up to ask several times when our food was coming out. The waitress said that she was plating the food now, and it'd be right out. ... insert another 20 minutes. My husband normally eats anything. Anytime. He's the type that will finish food just not to waste it even if he dislikes it. I've NEVER seen him turn away even bad food. He sent the burger back. First time since I've known him and we've been to sime terrible places. They OD on the dijon, so much that my bread tore to pieces and I had to ask for new bread pieces. the ahí was OK, nothing fantastic and the dressing and sesame was too overpowering of the flavor profile. The burgers were a dissapointment. I finished mine, but it lacked seasoning, flavor, and was dry, and Luke warm. I don't get how you make us wait that long for food in an empty restaurant, and then just say " sorry" don't ask to right the wrong or anything. The atmosphere, service and location are all great. The steak frites can be inconsistent, and the associated sauce often lumpy. I can get past the lumps, but what really chaps my hide is the troublemaker margarita. We've ordered this particular drink on several occasions, each time remaining hopeful, but each time there was no, as in none, zero, zilch, nada, alcohol. I'm not expecting a Miss Mae's (google it, a New Orleans benchmark for heavy drinking) drink that is 95% alcohol and 5% ice, but if you call a drink something like "troublemaker" I would expect that there may be some trouble in there, somewhere, perhaps, maybe. Enjoyed a good meal with some friends on a Saturday night around 9 p.m. The restaurant was really bustling and had a nice vibe, but the acoustics were terrible. It was so loud! Food: We ordered the wings (amazing seasonings), and fried seafood for apps and then Shrimp and Grits and Cavatelli for our entrees. The shrimp and grits dish was very good, but it was definitely sitting in a pool of butter. I'm a fan of butter, but it was too much! Drinks: bartender made a fantastic dirty martini and we then had wine. Selection was good. Service: the waitress was friendly but busy, so attentiveness was lacking. We had to ask where our apps were after waiting almost 20 minutes. Overall: 3.5 stars. I'd go back again if ever in town. First time here. We had a wedge salad, burger with fries and calamari as an appetizer. The calamari was excellent, served with a marinara sauce and lemon. Nicely cooked. The wedge salad was also very good, fresh with a generous amount of dressing cheese, bacon etc. Service was great. The burger was a disappointment. Soggy, no seasoning and no condiments . The parking lot was totally destroyed and being repaved, still masses of cars just parked everywhere to get inside for the great food. I had the hanger steak. It was delicious. I was slightly disappointed by the "Hand Cut" fries. They cam out of a Publix frozen bag and were fried just right. The fresh wild salad was a good addition. Just tried The Union after watching its construction for the past few months. The interior is small, but cozy, decorated with what appears to be a early-70's vibe. The "Muzak" was excellent, playing AOR type songs from the 60's and 70's (Spencer Davis Group, Jimi Hendrix, among others). The owner or manager, I never did find out, came around to various tables chatting to patrons, complete with a "Dark Side of the Moon" T-shirt and "peace" symbol. The wait and server staff is young, good looking, very casual, and sharp. We had a party of 5, and our orders were taken by memory (which I generally dislike), but everything came out exactly as ordered, and quickly. Taking advantage of the complimentary valet parking is a must, with very little parking area. The valets were also very courteous and fast. The food was certainly good (I had the clams), if a bit heavy on the spices. My party is not one for "adventurous" foods, and I think it was too much for them. The cheddar grits on the "Elvis" (shrimp) were a hit with everyone. An appetizer I've not ever seen before was the "Pickle Plate", a potpourri of pickled items; peppers, onions, artichoke hearts and of course, pickles. Very good and enjoyed by all. Overall a 3 1/2 to 4 star place. They seemed to not have any "startup" issues, and the employees know how to run a restaurant well. read more

One of our favorite local joints. The bad: Alpharetta jerks who don't need the handicap parking will use the spot anyway so I have nowhere to unload my wheelchair. The staff turns the tables sideways on the patio so I can't get through without practically remodeling. This is not only inconvenient, but against the ADA. They need to fix this. Their threshold on their exterior doors (the front door and the side door at the bar) are both so high, I have to pop a wheelie to get through. The good: The service has been excellent all but one time. We like to eat on the patio. It's way too loud inside! The patio with the fireplace is peaceful and relaxing. I always order the crab dip and the Coffee & Donuts. The beignets vary in quality, depending on who prepared them. Sometimes they are New Orleans worthy, and other times they are chewy and a little "meh" but the coffee ice cream is always a home run. I love the goat cheese ravioli. The wedge salad leaves a lot to be desired. They skimp on the tomato, bacon, bleu cheese crumbles, and dressing. For $9, they need to compete with every other restaurant which serves a wedge salad. They serve easily 1/3 the toppings as other restaurants. The wedge salad cost is low. When we have a bill of $160, I would really just like my salad to be on par with the quality of the remainder of the menu. Despite these few negative things (the biggest issue being the lack of accessibility, I hate feeling unwelcome) we do still like the ambiance and food. One other issue is booking private parties. I tried to book a party and was told I would get a call back from the manager because they weren't sure if they could accommodate a party of 25 based on existing reservations. I found another place but on the day of the event, they called and asked where we were. We never got a call from them at all. Needless to say, they just need to work out these kinks. I gave a 4 for the food and ambiance, but otherwise I would have given a 2.5. There are just too many little issues which add up to a much bigger issue. read more

I have mixed feelings about this restaurant. I have eaten here on two separate occasions. One time I ordered the chicken Parmesan and another time I ordered the meatloaf. I did not like the chicken Parmesan that much. It was alright but nothing special. It was a big portion but nothing stellar. Surprisingly I loved the meatloaf. Family needed a quick dinner fix last night. I placed my order by phone around five pm for pickup. Everyone wanted burgers so that is what we got. Even though the drive hone was over 30 minutes, our burgers were fresh, juicy, tasty, AND hot. They were delicious. The french fries, although hand cut and properly seasoned, didn't rate as high because the steam that built up in the styrofoam container made them soggy. If we had them in the car, they would have been perfect. Loved our first experience and will definitely return. read more

Heard a lot of great reviews for The Union and decided to try it. The reviews were not wrong. Our meal was fantastic. The BBQ/Blue Cheese chips are outstanding and very flavorful. My husband got chicken wings and mac'n cheese and I got the salmon BLT. Everything tasted fresh and homemade. Our server was Madalen and her excellent service, attention to details and knowledge of the menu made the overall experience a fantastic one. The restaurant was clean and they had a dedicated person cleaning all frequently touched surfaces (door handles, tables, etc). We will be a regular customer and although I am sure all the other wait staff is awesome, we will definitely be asking for Madalen to take care of us. read more

This is a very good restaurant! Food, service, ambience - all good! It's a quiet little out-of-the-way spot, and mostly locals frequent it. Lots of high school kids hanging out and working there, and it's very friendly. I love their burrata salad with a salmon filet topper. The salmon is always cooked perfectly, and the burrata is fresh and "perfect". However, last night we ordered the chicken liver appetizer - raw livers cooked in vinegar on a bed of arugula and doused in salad dressing. That, for us, was a "one and done". I do not recommend it! I can't imagine that is a big seller on the menu. For me, they would sell more orders if they would batter and fry the chicken livers. Hubs and I will travel for well cooked fried chicken livers, and they are hard to find. Also, last night I ordered the butternut squash with brussels sprouts side, and it was very disappointing. The brussels sprouts were not prepped properly (still had the tough stems on) and the whole dish was undercooked. It had the potential to be very good, but it didn't make the mark. Too bad! This has become a new "spot" for us, and we haven't been there often so far. But, we will go back and try other items on the menu. But, the way they cook salmon filet is "right on", and that will be a "go to" for us! read more

We really had high expectations for this restaurant. Stopped for a quick lunch on Saturday. Restaurant was full and buzzing and for me it is a good sign. My wife ordered salmon and quinoa bowl, I ordered curried chicken bowl. Food came out quickly and looked good, but to our great disappointment it was completely underseasoned. My dish supposed to include curry vinaigrette, but I could barely taste it. Wife's salmon was cooked properly but was not seasoned at all. Same with her quinoa and roasted vegetables. My husband and I are always looking for new places to eat. We arrived Friday afternoon around 2:10 pm. They were not busy and we were seated by the hostess. while we waited I observed the hostess standing at the bar where the cooks place food for service. I observed her yawn and the lay her head down on the bar. While we waited i observed another table of two get seated and receive their beers. After approximately 20 minutes we still did not have a server acknowledge us or get our drink orders. We got engaged 2 weeks ago and being neighbors to the area of this restaurant which we frequent often, we decided to go and celebrate somewhere that we loved and know we'll be at often. When we excitedly told our server the news while ordering food and champagne, she made quite the sour face and barely mouthed out anything of common courtesy in response much else, professional customer service. This review is based solely on staff, not food. Food as always was great, hot and quickly served. We were very unimpressed with our server and I can say for a fact, if we return (which most likely we will), I would probably request a different waitress. We were looking for a place to celebrate my husband's birthday and discovered The Union. Serendipity. Who knew we could find such a cute and quirky place in little Old Milton. We ate on the porch and we couldn't have improved on anything. Loved the food and the service was topnotch. My salmon quinoa bowl was delicious and my husband loved his chicken schnitzel. We got a birthday treat of donuts (beignets) and ice cream. Soooo good. I'd love to go back for the shrimp and grits and creme brûlée. I know it will be amazing. Ok first let me say the welcome dogs so they are a plus in my book. They did bring water out for the dogs, plus. The food is delish so there is another plus. But the service was awful. The place was busy but it wasn't that busy. They serve us the wings as an appetizer which were so good but super messy with no napkins. Then left the bones on the table the entire time of our lunch. I can't stand when they don't pick up your finished dishes. We constantly had to ask for refills. We seem like we were hunting down the server the entire time. The porch was pleasant. They are hiring more servers so maybe there is an issue there but all in all I can only give them three stars. When you spend that much on lunch, your expectations are high. We were let down.
