we had reservations on mothers day for 2 pm. we were seated promptly but was over an hour before drinks were offered and over two hours before food was served our waitress was rude my clams were burned and much much darker than the rest of fried items we-usually love it there but they missed the mark on this trip food and service were lacking on this visit. we wrote to management and heard nothing. just like everything else with the time it ain't what it used to be seems like we take your monry but dont care Bout anything else. I grew up enjoying the Village Inn, it was the only place that had great batter for fried clams. It had been over a decade since my last visit. So my sister and I took my father this year on Father's Day, and it was good, the clams were as I remembered. When we were coming back from camp a few weeks after Father's Day, we decided to stop and get some take out. I ordered 2 captain's plates and between both orders there were 7 scallops and maybe 2 dozen small shrimp. The remaining were all over cooked clams and fries, so we couldn't even enjoy the ridiculous clam to scallop ratio. On my way home from camp this past weekend I thought I'd give it a try again (glutton for punishment). This time I ordered the pick 2 plate (scallop and shrimp) and a side of clams. The clams were delicious, but the french-fries to scallop and shrimp ratio was insulting and a little frustrating. I understand getting takeout is expensive, but I paid 75$ and I received a truck load of french-fries and no exaggeration 3.5 scallops and 9 small shrimp!!! I am a local small business owner, I fully understand how pricing has changed so dramatically, but come on, this is wrong. We went to the Village Inn on Friday night. The service was almost non existent. Actually, the food was too. I had prime rib. It was cold. The mashed potato's had been heated in the microwave so long it had a crust covering it. They were served in a little bowl that most restaurants put coleslaw in. My husband had baked haddock. I'm not sure it was haddock because it was the size of a minnow. His fries were air baked so long, the insides had disappeared. We started the meal with clam chowder. It was watery with a tiny bit of milk to color it. Absolutely no taste! And all of this for $72.00. We only had one soda, no refills because the waitress never came back to check on us. Really bad restaurant stay away!!!! The menu is not what is online and if you want a lobster dinner be ready to pay $60 for a single lobster. Waitress couldn't tell us if they had lobster after we questioned the striped down menus we were handed when we sat. Over the years this place has been known for their seafood entrees and very tasty dishes. From what I have been told 90% of their dishes are made fresh to order and they purchase fresh seafood daily. Their lasagna is very good and if you order the fried clams be prepared to have an appetite because they give you a heaping plate full of them. The establishment is family owned and operated and very pleasant to speak with. The place nearly burned down a few years back but they rebuilt what was damaged and they still remind one of the top 10 grossing restaurants in the entire state of Maine. read more

Was able to swap the fries (which looked frozen precut type) for a Caesar salad that unfortunately came with premade dressing. Service was nice and not rushed. I picked the smaller portion of the Captain's Platter. It had fried fish, clams, scallops, and shrimp...and I would probably rank them in that order. Yuck. I ordered the shore dinner which consisted of a lobster roll, fish/clam chowder, fries, and coleslaw. The lobster roll was tiny, served on a hamburger roll, and has so much mayo in it that I couldn't taste the lobster meat. The fries were frozen crinkle cut fries and served without any salt on them at all. The coleslaw was overly mayoed just like the lobster roll. The fish chowder was delicious. I won't be back, but if you're eating here for some reason just get the chowder. read more

The Village Inn has been a part of the Saco/Auburn Maine restaurant scene since the 1970s (before then the restaurant was a drive-in movie theater, if memory serves me right), and for good reason: they serve delicious, fresh seafood at competitive prices. They make a seafood chowder that is amazing, but then again, all of their soups are. The lobster stew, clam chowder, and french onion soup are the standouts. The restaurant is also known for it's giant fried seafood platters, the best of these being the captains seafood platter. With everything being fried, you'd think that these dishes would be far too heavy, but they aren't- somehow the combination of fresher-than-fresh seafood and the light batter makes for a much more manageable meal. Of course, you can also order these dishes baked if you'd prefer. I've had the prime rib before as well, and while it was still very tasty and tender, I wouldn't choose it over the amazing seafood again. It's less an indictment of the meat and more an overwhelming recommendation of the fish. The Village Inn is an amazing, affordable, can't-miss central Maine institution. I have been going to this place for years so this review is based on numerous visits including recent ones. This is a traditional old fashioned Maine seafood restaurant. This is the place to go for fried seafood, baked haddock in crumbs, fish/seafood chowder or Lobster stew. If you are not into seafood, they have a decent prime rib or steak. If you are looking for an upscale nouvelle cuisine seafood kind of place- then Fishbones across the river may be more your cup of tea. Decor is that nautical theme kitsch typical of places like this. Somehow - even though it was rebuilt a couple of years ago after a fire - it looks just as dated as before - and frankly, that is part of the charm. Service has always been friendly and proficient. Mixed drinks are old school like you would find at a Legion hall or a VFW- they pack a wallop - so keep that in mind if you are driving. If you want huge portions and can't decide - go with a captain's seafood platter. It is a matter of taste, but I always go with breaded (also known as crumb) as opposed to battered. The mark of a good old fashioned seafood place is the onion rings - these are actual fresh rings of an onion that is dredged in the crumbs with the seafood and fried along with it. It is totally different from ordinary fast food onion rings and a whole lot better - kind of reminds you of the french onions you top a green bean casserole with. If you order the seafood platter - plan on taking some home with you no matter how big an eater you are. 50 years ago - all seafood restaurants in Maine were like this. Old school Mainers would not recognize the pretentious foo-foo places like you find these days the Old Port or Kennebunk. This place is a classic. Dated? Hell yea! read more

When we got home, and recovered from our sticker shock, we found that the lettuce on the sandwiches was rotten and the tiny stuffed potatoes had 2 microscopic pieces of brocolli on them each. We stopped at The Village Inn last Saturday evening on the way home from vacationing in northern Maine. Our first time here, since we're not from the area. I had a steak and chicken breast dinner. They both were perfectly cooked, BUT the chicken breast was the tiniest one I've ever seen. It must have come from a bantam hen. The waitress didn't care. She agreed that it was tiny and walked away. Horrible! I hadn't been to The Village Inn for years but I have fond memories and the menu looked vast. I looked at the reviews and took them with a grain of salt. Turns out they were right! I should have listened. I ordered the 12 oz sirloin and fried scallops for $32. It came with a baked potato and broccoli. The potato was literally the only edible item. The steak was of very poor quality marbled with fat and gristle. The fried scallops were small, cut in half and totally overcooked. I could barely choke them down smothered in tartar sauce. I also noted that there were pieces of the side muscle deep fried as if they were giving me "extra." I noticed another customer said the same thing. I ate what I could stomach but it was a very blah and uninspired meal that could have been delicious! The decor is old, worn, and totally out of date. The wait staff was bored and it showed. It was a very expensive $48 bill for a meal that was barely edible. If you want a good steak go to Longhorn and if you're craving fried seafood check out KP's instead.
