This is a fun spot to visit and have a drink. The decor and ambience is great- it's like a cross between Alice in Wonderland and a fairy tale setting, which makes sense given the name. Unfortunately the drinks here are subpar. They're trying very hard to have a fun menu with signature drinks, but failed to make the drinks worth drinking. There are niche ingredients and fun names, but the twists appear to be only for the sake of seeming original, and forget that a drink should be enjoyable first. I've now have had several different drinks, and have been underwhelmed with each of them. If you're looking for a fun place to have a beer or wine, this is definitely the spot, but this isn't the spot for a well done craft cocktail. read more

The drinks were underwhelming -- we ordered two different cocktails and neither felt cohesive. The ingredients seemed mismatched, as if they were just thrown together without much thought or balance. Service was also lacking. We weren't acknowledged by the bartender until another staff member stepped in and asked if we had been helped, which didn't feel very welcoming. The ambiance felt a bit off as well. The furniture arrangement had no real flow or intention -- much like the drinks, it felt thrown together without a clear sense of design or atmosphere. After a previously bad first experience. I gave this place another chance and decided to try their tea experience with my friend. And it was so LOVELY. The price point was reasonable. Tea time is always kind of pricey! The portions were soooo big and the food was soooo delicious. Tea experience came with scones, muffins, fruits, a pot of tea for each guest, cucumber tuna and chicken sandwiches, also a complimentary glass of mimosa. Everything was AMAZING. Would say my favorite sandwich was the cucumber! It was so refreshing and just delicious. It was a very cute and beautiful set up. Definitely a warming and cutesy vibe. The servers were all so nice and welcoming as well. We finished all our Tea and took our leftovers home. This place is awesome! Stopped in for a nightcap after a long day. We were able to get front parking which was really nice. The ambiance was so inviting. Dimly lit but lit enough that you could still see, we were able to grab a seat on one of the couches. Our drinks were tasty, and just the whole vibe of the place was very relaxing. There was music and conversation, but it was not so loud that I could not hear my partner. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because you have to order your drinks at the bar and then maneuver through the tables and people to get your drink back to where you're sitting. read more

The Wicked Wolf is newer on the scene in LB and has a very specific vibe. It's a lounge setting that has a bit of a dark fairytale theme to it or as they say on their website: "reminiscent of a living room in the forest". We came in on a weeknight and I found it interesting to see a couple of people hanging out and working on their laptops. There was also a group that had brought in their own food, which is good to know. We sat at the bar and were instantly helped by the professional and talented bartenders. They are known for having one of if not "the" largest mocktail menu in town which is great! But I was surprised to see that the mocktails were only $2 less than the cocktails. This bar is so amazing, the decor is very eclectic and whimsical, while the drinks are truly amazing! They have some very interesting cocktails with ingredients that you would think go together, but I was pleasantly surprised! I had the dead man's hand and the tikka masala infused rum and I've never had a drink like it! The other great cocktail I tried was the blood meridian, sweet with a lil kick from the strawberry and gochujang syrup! If you are looking for a great cocktail spot, the wicked wolf is the spot to check out for new inventive cocktails! So I was actually here the week of the soft open, and it's telling that they definitely had their act together from day one, that I *could* have written a great review of that first visit, too - they were a bit slow when they got busy, but that's just to be expected, and they were busy because they'd just opened, and word had already spread. I could've, but I was lazy/busy and didn't, until a couple days ago, when they were running free fancy oysters with every gin drink (that day only, a good incentive). So they've now been consistently great twice, and I really have no excuse for procrastinating. Anyway, I do also love the space - from the initial advertising, I was expecting something more "themed", which this isn't. It is not a tiki bar but fantasy (though that would also be cool), just a well-decorated, chill neighborhood bar with some good art and comfy seats (when it *wasn't* as busy, the vibe reminded me a bit of a craft coffee shop.) All the bartenders there both times were super cool, and yeah, all the drinks were great. (Full priced cocktails are currently $14, though they do have a T-Th happy hour until 7 where menu cocktails are $10, as well as making the draft beer as cheap as $4. For the sake of science, I had to try the $4 house blonde, and yeah, it's a pretty great blonde. When it's not happy hour, the house beer is $7, which still isn't bad, either. Happy hour also offers $6 house wine, but I haven't tried those yet. Also neat, though I haven't tried any of their mocktails, but they do have one of the city's most comprehensive-looking mocktail menus, which are also $8 during happy hour.) As far as cocktails, on the first visit, I tried the "Into the Woods" (their take on a smoked old fashioned, which is pretty good, but can't compete with the much more smoked, more whiskey-forward, admittedly much *pricier* version at Navy Proof), as well as the Red Riding Hood, a truly wonderful mezcal Negroni variation with pineapple-infused Campari and shaved chocolate as a garnish. The second time I was there, I confirmed a hunch: given that, unlike Navy Proof with the big elaborate fancy smoking machine, Wicked Wolf smokes your old fashioned table-side with one of those glass-toppers you can buy at home (which gets you about 90% as smoked a drink, for about 10% the time and effort), they'd be happy to smoke any other spirit-forward drink, and that a smoked Red Riding Hood would be one of the best drinks ever. I'm glad to report, they were indeed happy to smoke any drink, and that smoked Red Riding Hood *is* one of my favorite new drinks. Still got happy hour price on it, too! (Then I also had a classic smoked Negroni, because, if you recall from above, free oysters with any gin cocktail purchase that day. It was supposed to be for "Martini Monday", but hey, a smoked Negroni is a gin cocktail, so I got my oysters! Was a great Negroni, but the Red Riding Hood is the winner. But you can tell it's a solid cocktail bar from the strength/balance of a very well made classic cocktail. Notably correct single large ice cube, too - drives me crazy as a cocktail nerd, when otherwise good Negronis get dilution totally wrong via quick-melting ice, this not being one of those places!) I did also try the 'cocktail of the month' the first time I was there, the "Jack Albert" - though when I was back last weekend, it was still on the menu, which I'm not complaining about, as it was also very good (if you want something less spirit-forward, more fruity/creamy/floral). Uses one of my favorite gins, too (Amass). As far as food, for right now, their official policy is BYO food (they do also have vendors some days, but you can still bring your own food as well. And there's a Thai place around the corner, another Thai place two blocks away, and a pretty solid bbq place right next door, other than they close at 7. Though the first time I was here, I was there in time to snag some bbq, and bbq + a smoked old fashioned was a great combo. (Bbq + a smoked mezcal Negroni would and likely will be an even better combo in the future, though...) So, overall, while I'm personally, selfishly, sad another new great cocktail bar opened not-downtown, I'm also *happy* that Long Beach is turning more and more into a proper cocktail city like SF, with such great cocktail bars opening all over the city. While the cocktails here aren't *quite* as imaginative or zany as those at my other favorite relatively brand-new bar, Baby Gee, it, and they, are exactly what they should be: drinks they can make quickly and perfectly every time, from scratch with all quality ingredients, for people to enjoy while hanging out in the space. (Or if you're me, now, also specifically because that smoked mezcal Negroni, with toasted chocolate shavings, is absolutely one of my favorite cocktails at any bar now. Or, for that matter, for the various events they're also planning on doing in the future!) read more

We had the Cocktail of the Month: Huff & Puff, Into the Woods, Beauty & the Peach, and Once Upon a Lime, and all the drinks were well-balanced and skillfully made. We absolutely loved the Huff & Puff -- a good mix of sweet & sour with a kick of the heat. It was perfection. All drinks were refreshing. Service was kind and friendly. We love the fact that this new watering hole has monthly events and cocktail classes to bring the community together. I'm docking off one star for the lack of food -- would be nice to see some apps on the menu, i.e. marinated olives, maybe a simple charcuterie board, especially because we saw they have a nice wine list and Wednesday Wine Night. Some nibbles would be wonderful! Oh, and the seating could be more inviting or at least organized in a way that looks more aesthetically pleasing. We came to Wicked Wolf after a comedy show at a local brewery, what a change-up in vibes! The Wicked Wolf has a dark and intimate ambience, perfect for a date. There weren't many people there when we arrived, but I could see this place poppin' off on a weekend. We were a group of 5 and headed to the rooftop area after ordering drinks. I absolutely loved the rooftop area, it was spacious, but had cozy little areas for small groups. We would've stayed up there all night, but they "closed" it quite early, I think due to lack of people? I realized how loud the main dining area was after being on the rooftop. The environment is decidedly " In to the Woods " inspired. While appetizers were served at the grand opening the only food offering during our visit was a menu from the Nextdoor BBQ restaurant. I hosted my 40th birthday party upstairs in the private Wolf Den area. Everything was so amazing-- from the drinks made by the bartenders (best Mai Tai I've ever had!), to the beautiful room that complemented my 1960s "Mad Men" theme perfectly, the party was so wonderful. Thea and her staff were so easy to work with, and really allowed me to have the freedom to do the party how I wanted! Everyone we encountered at the bar treated us so kindly, and my friends have been raving about the drinks and venue since the party. The Wicked Wolf is a gem. My husband discovered "the Wolf" last year and we are solid fans. Pete, the security team, gave us a warm welcome and advised us to order at the bar after we made our drink selections. I ordered the Jack Albert (delicious drink with a sweet story) and Hubby ordered an old fashioned (made at an elite level). Pete shared that we can order BBQ from Wrigley BBQ next door and eat it at the bar. We had some delicious BBQ with our lovely cocktails. This same night, we had the honor of meeting George, the husband of the owner Thea. He shared about the beginnings of the bar. Since that evening, over a year ago, we have had the honor of meeting the owner, Thea, and attending many special events: Uncle Nearest learning and tasting, Ford's Gin learning and tasting, Repeal Day celebration and more. This review is for their afternoon tea. It's $45. The good part is the you get a glass of bubbly. The tea I chose was okay, and the sandwiches were ok. But most of the baked goods that come with the tea service were from Costco. The macrons and madelines were definitely from Costco, the biscotti probably was too. It was definitely not your traditional afternoon tea bc there was just random stuff--chocolate in wrappers, strawberries, grapes on top.
