Gyros at the Works are the best and a great value. I like to get my gyros meat and pita extra done, just for the extra texture. I've been going to the works since the late 70's (I used to go to the arcade with my brother next door to the Works as a teen) and it's always nice to see the same owner and a lot of the same workers. The Works is awesome food wise, yeah the place hasn't been updated in decades. If you want ambiance, look elsewhere...BUT if you are looking for killer-YES killer gyros, hot dogs, breaded mushrooms, and cheese fries you will not be disappointed. They were even written up in the paper for their gyros, the clipping is right by the cashier. I lived 4 blocks away as a child, and watched Talisman village mall go through revisions and stucco facings, loose Shasta Pet Center, Kim's Drugs, the funky dance place, and then Hot Dog Island; gain the stupid Walgreen's monstrosity and the kiddie day care, but the best thing of the mall was and still is the Works. I don't live at all close, but I will take any chance I get to make a trip to the ol' neighborhood just to get a Work's famous mouth watering gyro. Like other reviewers, it would have gotten 5 stars if it was a bit more updated, but if you don't like the decor they do a mean carryout :) I love, love, love the Works! read more

Pretty standard hot-dog and gyro place, but standard in the Chicago-land area is probably 7 stars anywhere else. Everything is very solid, but the soups (who orders soups at a hot-dog place?!?) are really good. I think they are homemade based on the owner up-selling me one day on the chicken and shells. Gyro was excellent! However, I had to knock my rating down a star because the onion rings were those commercial Ore-Ida kind. This place is a hole in the wall in the shopping center and most people would not even see it but it's worth finding! Absolutely legit!!! Gyros are large and amazingly delicious. Phone Number: 847-724-0616 Stars: 4.5 out of 5 Hours: Monday-Saturday 11:00 am - 9:00 pm Sunday 11:00 am - 8:00 pm The Visit: We visited on December 15, 2015 at 5pm Dishes we tried & Prices: Gyro Sandwich $6.25 Pizza Puff $2.50 Cheese Fries $2.29 Decor/Vibe: The decor is very plain and simple. There are wooden tables and chairs taking up all the space in the medium sized restaurant. There is also a T.V. in the corner that usually plays sport channels. The works has a really good feel to it. There are paintings all around the walls that makes it stand out. You look around and read all the posters. Stare at the art. They are very interesting. Since it is a Greek restaurant, they do have posters that are really hilarious about how Americans pronounce Gyro and how Greeks do. Check it out! It made me chuckle. They have a mens and women's bathroom all the way in the back by the T.V. One person could go inside each stall. The bathroom is also very clean. The restaurant has a Greek feeling to it because they do have Greek heritage all around like the poster. Service: The service is great. You walk inside, and you tell the guys what you want, you pay and sit down. Once the food is ready they call you over or sometimes even bring it over to you. They are really nice gentlemen. There are usually two men who are preparing the food, they don't take long. They make you laugh or compliment you. If you're a frequent customer they recognize who you are and greet you at the door once you walk in. They really try to make you feel comfortable, if you don't know what you want and stare at the menu for too long they give you a couple suggestions. They ask you what you like to eat and tell you to try what they have to offer. I would give it a 5/5 for such a little place like The Works. The Food: I tried three different things. I tried the classic gyro, cheese fries, and a pizza puff. The cheese fries were really good. Met by expectation. The warm fries with steamy cheese covering the potatoes was really good. If I could compare them it would be better than Portillo's. The next thing I had was a pizza puff. The pizza puff is really small but will fill you up. It's really greasy but once you pat it down a few times then you can enjoy the puff without worrying about collapsing from a heart attack. Last but not least I ordered a gyro. The gyro was just pita bread with gyro meat on it. It had tzatziki sauce, onions and tomatoes. There wasn't enough sauce to cover the dry meat. I've had this before and I never really noticed how dry it was. It's obviously really good if I didn't notice before. To kick it all off I ordered a water to bring all of that deliciousness down to my belly. Speed: They are really speedy to making your food. The fastest place I've ever been too. They will literally make your food in less than 5 minutes. Those 5 minutes they will make the freshy goodness that you will soon devour. They are really good with getting people in and out. Very pleasing. Pros and Cons: Pros are they are very quick on making the food. The food makes your mouth water and you'll be craving it very soon after having it. The workers are very nice and pleasing. They will give you suggestions and make you feel like home. They recognize you if you visit frequently. I love the posters, it makes it more fun to look around and stare at everything. Cons are the furniture is really old. It's all wooden and it looks like they've had the same chairs and tables for years. I think they should get new ones. They should probably turn up the volume a little bit when the T.V. is on because we can't really hear when there's a game. They should also paint the walls because I think the plain white walls look dull and boring. They need to spice the store up a little bit. Maybe add some Greek heritage around the restaurant. A flag? or maybe even some Greek columns. A con maybe for 21+ is that they don't serve alcohol. Another con is that they don't make reservations. read more

Not sure what happened to this little hole in the wall, used to be very good. Last time my fiance and I ate there we ordered gyros and think the meat was extremely old. The owner was at the register. I gave a $20 bill and ordered a gyro. He gives change for $10. Then he walked away to tend to other activities quickly before I had a chance to stop him. I waited at the register for him to come back. When he came back I asked him for the remaining $10. He started questioning my integrity. I told him I can show proof that I just withdrew $60 from the Walgreens next door and I have a receipt. He wouldn't believe. It was was most insulting experience I've had in any service business. I always thought that the Works was good but last few visits were not good at all. The sauce for gyros was runny and curdled. Ordered with a group of friends we were charged $10 more than prices on line. Very little onion and tomato on the gyros. Been to the Works for over 7 years and the food is overall pretty good . However, the prices continue to rise which is unfortunate. The only area that needs improvement is the service . Went there one time to try it out. Ordered gyros for me and my mother, said no drinks. Guy insisted we get drinks, said no multiple times. Said they'd be free, said fine. Charged us for the drinks anyways. Food was just okay. Never going back there again. You'd be much better off going 5mins down the road to Goodi's. read more

Been stopping in for over 30 years and it's the same great food run by a friendly staff that is always welcoming. As a kid the fries basket always looked enormous and now as an adult it is still a huge mound of happiness. The Italian beef, like the gyros, is overstuffed into a perfect shell. Gets the right amount of soggy without getting disgusting. I couldn't help but close my eyes and savor each bite. On the way out two guys behind the counter chirp their thanks but I am the one who is thankful that The Works has survived while my other childhood favorites in the Talisman (Shasta and The Name is Games) have succumbed to time. read more
