I find the negative reviews interesting. They are always very friendly and even if I have not been there in 3-4 months they greet me as a friend. I have been eating here for more years than I can count. The standouts are the Gryos and burgers. The gyros are by far IMHO the best anywhere in the Chicagoland area. I love the tzatziki sauce too and always ask for extra. If you are looking for 5 star service this isn't the place as it's a fast food joint. Enjoy and celebrate what it is! read more

I just moved to Glenview a few months ago and have been here several times. I promised to try a variety of items once before repeating an order, but the gyro plate was so good that I failed in that mission by the third visit. I bring friends here every time, even my buddy from Israel who loved his burger. It's not a fancy place and doesn't pretend to be, but it is a place loaded with tradition, a great atmosphere, a very friendly staff, and great food. Have been going to The Works since the day they opened the doors in the 70s, and it has always been a family favorite. The gyros are the best you will ever find anywhere and I crave them nearly every day. They dip the pita in the drippings from the gyro spit and grill them a bit, so the bread is warm and moist-- not powdery and dry like many wanna-be gyro places. The meat is cooked perfectly with a bit of crunchiness on the edges of some pieces, and super moist meaty tastiness throughout. The tangy cucumber tzatziki sauce is the perfect counterpoint to the umami of the meat. Love the "Works" hot dog, which is basically a Chicago Style double hotdog on French Bread instead of a poppy seed bun. The cheese fries don't look like much at first, but they're surprisingly addictive. The portions are great and Andy and the boys are always friendly. Grew up in th Glenview area and spent years at THE WORKS. Best Gyro's and cheese fries in town. Moved out on my own and can't tell you how many times in the past 25 years I drove 30 minutes south to get that fabulous Gyro's and cheese fries. Not only the best Gyros in the northern suburbs, but the best service too! I went in there today for my roughly bi-monthly gyros and cheese fry fix. After placing my order, I realized I had forgotten my wallet. I told ol' George at the counter I would be back in ten minutes, and he tells me "No, you just pay next time! Don't worry about it till next time". How awesome is that? I'm only in there twice a month, but he knows I'll be back for more, and he'll remember me when I do! read more

I've been going to eat at The Works since I was a young girl, at least 30 years, it amazes me that they continue to serve the same high quality food every time. I won't even eat gyros anywhere else as I'm sure to be disappointed. From the pita bread, to the fresh tomato and onion slices to the homemade sauce and the generous amount of meat--eating a gyros at The Works is an incredible taste-bud experience. I also love their french fries, perfect crispness with a soft fluffy texture inside. I've given up ordering fries at restaurants, except at The Works--if you're going to cheat, it better be the best! I've been going here for over 30 years and have seen the generations of family work there. that's kinda cool and rare. as for the food- there's a reason ive gone here for over 30 years--love it!! the gyros are the staple- best tzitziki sauce around. pita grilled nicely and the kronos meat is cooked perfectly. Don't ignore the steak sandwich, the grecian chicken, the char grilled burger or the Vienna dogs either. i hope this place is around for generations to come. read more

I have been going to this place for 34-35 years, since I was a kid. Stopped by there today. Andy, one of the owners greeted me with a smile and a hand shake, like he has for most of my life. Unfortunately, George, his brother is no longer with us. I ordered the one thing that I crave when I am in the area. A Gyro, cheese fry and a coke. Still the best Gyro around. I thought I had found a replacement some years ago after being gone for a few years, That was quickly erased when I stepped back into The Works. Same building, same people and same great food. $8 1/2 bucks for 2 dogs and a regular fry. Haven't been here in a while... what a disappointment! There was so much mustard and relish on the dogs that the buns fell apart from being so soggy! and, why doesn't anyone cook their fries anymore? Fries were way undercooked and cold! The Glen in Glenview has always been the go to area for teens looking to fill their empty stomachs, but most haven't traveled to the outskirts of the locale to discover what the town has to offer. One of these hidden locations is the The Works. A local restaurant located on the border of Glenview and Niles. This easily missed Greek and American fast food restaurant lies on the corner of Golf Rd. and Washington Rd. next to a Walgreens and Washington Elementary School. The outside of the restaurant looks like a bland burger joint with a large dimly light sign that says "The Works," with another dimly light sign that says "Gyros Hot Dogs," but don't let this confuse you. The interior of the restaurant is far from bland. Outfitted in vintage framed painting of settings in Greece, hand painted murals, and a particularly interesting wall, permeated in photos of famous customers, like Stone Cold Steve Austin, and local athletes. This combination of visual attractions has given the restaurant a feeling that there must be some history behind it. As not all fast food joint have it, the smell as you walk in is somewhat appealing. The overwhelming smell of the the grill seeps into the nose and detects the odors of charred burgers and roasted beef, which is heaven for a starving teen. As I walked in with my friend, I scanned the room and noticed the residents of the tables. The setting reminded me the way Michael Harvey described the inside of Mr. Beef, in The Chicago Way. Overall the inside was mostly pleasant, visual wise. The menu consisted of burgers, gyros, sandwiches, steak, chicken, and sides for an inexpensive price. I didn't get to look at all the prices and choices but I did notice a few. Charred burgers were $4.05, a gyro sandwich was $6.25, fries were $2.29, and what looked like a large chicken platter was $9.95. I ordered the gyro sandwich with everything and fries for a total of $8.54 plus tax. The workers wore white robes with black pants and white hats that reminded me of what you may see in the late 50's series, The Twilight Zone. The gentleman who took my order was polite and easy going. He spoke informally but respectively, which made me feel welcome and relaxed. The owner's son, a mid aged man, asked how I was doing, asked if I wanted a drink, and rung me up. I asked for water, took my change, and found a table near the 14" T.V. in the corner showing the Bulls game. I was extremely delighted in the service but really hope they invest in a larger T.V. The food was made in only a few minutes and brought out to us by the owners son. Thinking the food would take a while and we'd have to grab it ourselves, I was astonished to see the workers kindly working to satisfy us. The gyro looked impressive, long juicy strips of beef with two fat slices of tomato, blanketed in cool cucumber sauce, all wrapped in a soft flat roll of pita bread. The taste was rather exhilarating. Such great tasting beef, accompanied by the juicy ripe tomatoes slices and cucumber sauce fully put the extraordinary sandwich together. Not being able to resist devouring the gyro, I accidentally finished the entire sandwich, which left me with little room for the fries. The fries were served unsalted and looked like McDonald's fries. Fortunately this was not a problem because the table had salt and pepper and the fries did not taste like McDonald's fries. After adding some salt and ketchup, the fries were just right. Not too crunchy, not too soft, not too greasy, and thankfully not like cafeteria fries. The gyro had filled me up too much, so I wasn't able to finish the fries. In all, the outstanding work of the friendly employees has really made my visit pleasant, the food was filling, as well as delicious, and the interior arrays the history of this amazing restaurant. As teens, respect and service toward us is usually less than adults, but the employees from The Works have further increased my enjoyment of the experience. Regarding price and the amount of food for the price, it is perfect. If a meal for $9.00 could fill a 17 year old boy, then it is most definitely worth the price. Out of a four star rating, I would give The Works four stars and totally recommend this to others. read more

I have been a patron of the Works for well over 25 years and now my kids bring their friends for the same great food. It is a family friendly, casual environment great for young and old. Do not expect a fancy sit down dinner. This is just plain great Greek and American fast food. Every lunch hour this place has a line, but the orders are taken so fast the wait is never more than a few minutes. I love the Gyros and my wife loves the Shish-kebab plate. The kids, who are now grown up, have moved from hot dogs to Gyros, but still love the cheese fries! We are always greeted with a smile when we arrive. When the kids were young they were often surprised with a taste of the homers ice cream by George or Andy. These days I often call in an order for a pound or two of gyros to go and they pack it up with toasted pita and all the fixings. If you are in Glenview and just want a good old fashion Gyros give this place a try. read more
