I hadn't seen him in many years but was going to surprise him. Unfortunately the surprise was on me as he was not in. Once you walk in you feel like you are in a familiar place and we get warmly greeted by Nico at the bar. Hubby gets his usual Hendricks and tonic I get a cosmopolitan. Note the glass is super cute and that adds to my joy of this delicious cocktail. We are given menus. Nice selections so we get the Deviled Eggs to share to start. Next I get the rigatoni with sausage and hubby the Smash-burger. I am immediately impressed on this comforting dish especially on this cold dreary night. The portion size is very generous and thankfully hubby assists me in eating. He loves his burger as well. Sorry we are only in town visiting as I could definitely see us being regulars here at this warm and cozy establishment. So if you want to bar food, this is pretty much a food spot. Nothing major.. Nothing flashy... But decent food. I came for the burger, and because I wanna have some green, I got a salad (they were out is the wedge so I picked arugula as my green selection). Everything was pretty good. But I have a full bar if you rent that as well, that have a two TVs if you want to watch tv. Especially during March Madness lol. They have plenty of seats, and have a few outdoor seats too. If it's cooler, they have heating lamps also. They have a few decent beer tap options, and a board in the back of the restaurant to let you know what is available. We had a group of 3 for dinner at 6:30 pm on a Tuesday. Service was good. Food came out quickly. Our waitress - wish I remembered her name - got everything right! The food was fine, but I don't feel the need to go back. Here's what we got: - There Burger ($14): Burger was good, basically their take on a Big Mac. The fries were nice and crunchy. It was a good amount of food. I finished it all. - Mediterranean Chicken Sandwich ($14 + $1 for Garlic Rosemary Fries): I was told it was good, and that the sandwich itself deserves 4 stars. The Garlic Rosemary Fries were overpowering though. They need to go way lighter on the garlic. I would stick to the regular fries. - Arugula Salad ($10): I tried this and it was just eh. Nice surprise. Live near to this restaurant but never went in before. Didn't expect much either going in on a Saturday night with almost no one else there. But service was good and friendly and the bar was well stocked. So I ordered the There Burger and my wife the fish and chips. And when they came, they were surprisingly good. The burger was juicy and tasty on a good bun and the fires, which came with extra seasoning, really didn't need them as they were perfectly cooked. I visited There for a pop-up this past Tuesday night and had a good time. This is a local gastropub that opened in the Town Brookhaven mixed-use development in 2011-12. It's right across from Costco so there's plenty of parking. My friend Jonathan Truong, former Yelp Atlanta Community Manager (2015-2018), worked with There owner Bill Brown and executive chef Shane Devereux to host "Minhzy's Pho Pop-Up," benefiting the American Heart Association. The turnout was great. Most of the customers throughout the night were there to try the special pop-up Vietnamese menu. There normally serves scratch-made New American cuisine, fare that's more creative and elevated than typical pub grub. They use locally-sourced ingredients. They have an acre of land nearby where they grow a lot of their own produce. In 2017, There won Atlanta Magazine's 3rd Annual Best Burger Battle at Lenox Square, determined by popular vote. Craft cocktails are a specialty. There has a simple space: an L-shaped bar, a few TVs for sports, booths, and versatile tables. Outside, they have a small, dog-friendly, covered patio. The atmosphere is casual and at night, is dimly lit. This place felt like a neighborhood watering hole. They're open late daily and also serve weekend brunch. You can catch live music certain times of the week. I felt comfortable here and enjoyed the ambiance. The pop-up menu consisted of two drinks and three food items: Drinks * Anh Oi ($10) - Vietnamese margarita using fermented lemons and tequila * Minhzy Julep ($10) - Batavia Arrack (Indonesian rice and sugarcane molasses) with ginger, lemongrass, Thai basil, simple syrup, and club soda Food * Veg Papaya Salad ($9) - mix of papaya, sliced napa cabbage, onion, and sprouts topped with cilantro, crushed peanuts, and vegetarian fish sauce * Thit Kho ($10) - four-hour-plus palm-sugar-simmered pork butt and eggs with fresh garlic, caramelized onions, and rendered fish sauce * Momma's Pho ($12) - 50 pounds of beef marrow bones simmered for more than a day, infused with fire-roasted ginger, sweet onions, and lemongrass; rice noodles, cilantro, and scallions, topped with slices of New York strip The menu, which I uploaded to this listing, sounded a lot more colorful and funny with Jon's entertaining writing style. There owner Bill and chef Shane were at the event helping Jon both in the kitchen and out on the dining room floor. Jon and Bill came out and served some dishes themselves. I tried everything, but the Anh Oi. The Minhzy Julep could've been better. A couple others independently agreed. The alcohol tasted cheap. It's okay, though, because this was a fundraiser and we were there to support Jon. The food was a different story. Everything tasted great. All of the dishes were Southern Vietnamese dishes. My favorite dish of the night was actually not the pho, but the rice (Thit Kho). It was really good. The pork had amazing flavor and texture. Savory and rich. I'm pretty sure it was the best Thit Kho I've had anywhere. I was really impressed with it considering Jon isn't a professional chef. The dish could definitely hold its own against any Vietnamese restaurant. The ingredients were fresh and I really liked the addition of the crunchy, raw watercress. Also, not only did the dish taste great, but it looked great too. In general, Jon did a wonderful job with the presentation of all of his dishes. As for the pho, wow. The best part was the meat. My fiancee commented it was the best meat she's ever had in pho and I agree. The meat was high quality, tender, and served rare (it eventually cooked in the hot soup). The beef was super tender and succulent with little fat and virtually no gristle. The broth was clean, clear, and on the light side. Several folks commented on the lightness of the broth. Like the other dishes, all of the ingredients were fresh. I appreciated the attention to detail including stalks of spring onion in the soup and the side plate of veggies including basil, culantro, green *and* red jalapenos, and lime wedges. Jon personally served the side plates. I could tell he put a lot of thought and effort into the execution of each and every dish, both from a taste perspective and a presentation perspective. My friend Melissa said she hasn't had better pho. The Veg Papaya Salad was excellent. I couldn't stop eating it. I've eaten a lot of papaya salad, both here and in Southeast Asia, and I was a big fan of this particular version. It tasted light and fresh. Some papaya salads are just drenched in fish sauce and become salty. Not this one. Also, the consistency of the papaya and cabbage was just right (often, some can be too hard). The shrimp chips were a nice addition, providing an appetizing, contrasting texture. Overall, I loved how spicy the dishes could be too if you ate the Thai chili peppers and jalapenos. Great local restaurant. Have been there a few times for brunch/dinner, lunch, you name it. Great beer prices. Went for lunch and there was a little switch up in the kitchen and they brought out a different sandwich than I ordered. Not a big deal at all - happens all the time. The chef came out and apologized and the whole staff truly went above and beyond to apologize and make sure we were well taken care of. I live close to "There" restaurant and yet have never gone in. While in quarantine I decided to give them a try for lunch. The hamburger was very tasty and the sauce was delicious. I also ordered their wontons which were enormes. They also had a well seasoned salad on the side which I ended up putting in my burger. The portion sizes of the dishes were humongous. I had half for lunch and saved the other half for dinner time. Overall good, and I will definitely visit the restaurant once businesses are again open to the public. To be continued... read more

I discovered this place during lockdown through their Monday $10 burger and beer special and have been hooked ever since! We came for Sunday brunch and while our normal go to is the 'There' burger (which is amazing by the way), we decided to go with the burger that was voted Atlanta's best, and was not disappointed. We got a side of their house made ranch highly recommended by our server (who didn't lead us wrong the whole time) which was the cherry on top of the meal. So we always come here when we go to Costco. It's usually slow and I think now I know why. I got the steamer special and they served them dry and hot (I had to ask for butter) so literally shriveling as I'm sitting there for almost 10 mins before the bartender (who was very nice) realized they have a broth and that side of butter. At this point they were practically jerky so I poured the broth over to try and save them and then was told by an older man at the bar that worked there "oh you don't know how to eat them" and that since he's from cape cod I should know that this clam jerky double dip method was how I should have just had them and been happy. I really had high hopes for this place but things just didn't pan out. A group of four of us started out with an early dinner on a Sunday night. It took about 10 minutes to get a server and this small place was only about 15-20% full at best. Come to find out they only had one server and he introduces himself to us not by telling us his name and welcoming us, but instead by complaining that management didn't think they were going to be a busy that night yet HE was super busy. This instantly sucked the life out of the excitement we had about dining out. The fun continues when we each ordered a drink, three drafts and a mixed drink, and it took 20 minutes to get these drinks. My wife ordered the mixed drink and she swears there was absolutely zero alcohol in it. Food came out in a respectable timeframe, but... we all had sandwiches and fries and all of our plates contained cold fries. My bison burger was good, however, when it was served to me the burger itself was so small that I could not even see the burger for the bun. You must go to There! This is a hidden gem located in Town Brookhaven with great food and service at great prices. The restaurant does classics well. We started with deviled eggs which came with bacon and a spicy sauce that was delicious. I enjoyed the salmon burger which is made fresh in house. I ordered it with the garlicky Parmesan fries. They come with a couple dipping sauces. We also enjoyed wines by the bottle for $15-20! Perfect for a nice day on the patio. I wish the scale were 1 to 10. This would be a 7 out of 10. I heard the Bloody Mary here was the best, so I had to find out. Yes. It was good and spicy with a nice, crisp piece of bacon. That was definitely the highlight of the meal. Otherwise, the food was mediocre. I had the eggplant parmesan, my husband had the mahi mahi sandwich, and we both had the smoked trout dip. The parmesan was very normal, the sandwich was good, but the mahi mahi was a little dry and the dip was not very smoky at all. Very little flavor. I hate giving the place such a low rating, because the people (staff) were really nice and all the patrons we're having so much fun watching the soccer game, but the food could be better and the dining area needs to be cleaned up. I am an even bigger fan of There now that I'm in TB all the time. Why? Super NPWH. Get to know Bill and Niehls and their staff (hi, Jack!) - they'll ask your name after your first or second visit and remember it and you from there. The food really is great- not everyone may think of There as an eating spot, vs just a drinking one, but should. Now that I've been many times, I know that you should get their fries and the absolutely delicious guac. On the chunky side, just like I like it. They do have a solid burger and such but also frequent specials (think a chicken pasta with portabellos, or duck gumbo). And FYI, those bar nuts are reallly spicy. And it's small, but their patio is a perfect place to eat or drink in nice weather, day or night - and you can probably bring your dog (even though a sign says "no"). (a much longer review also posted on my food blog) "There" is a self-proclaimed gastropub located at 305 Brookhaven Ave Ste 1200 in Brookhaven, right across from the Costco. The building is brownstone-brick and the first thing you'll see is a green awning with tables for the exterior seating. I parked at the edge of the Costco parking lot and crossed Brookhaven Ave and walked in - basically it was love at first sight. The movement towards the gastropub in the US, I think coincided with the expansion of craft beers - the kids who most appreciated the "art of beer" wanted something more than a greasy chicken-finger to accompany the higher quality beers that are now available. From this was born the gastropub (basically a portmanteau of gastronomy and pub) currently sweeping the nation. The gastropub There is no exception in regards to this latest and fine obsession with fine beers and upscale foods. Walking through the front door the first thing you see is the bar - what else? There are tables along the walls and the aforementioned exterior seating - all very homey and pub-like. I arrived around 1:00 PM-ish and originally picked out There as a brunch spot (this was a Sunday) - most of the crowd had already departed so there were only people at about half the tables - I chose to sit at the bar and had a very pleasant conversation with Bill tending bar - it started with a discussion of the menu and naturally gravitated towards the beer - I noticed a lot of Monday Night Brewing taps - and immediately went with the Coffee Imperial IPA - something I hadn't yet tried. It was delicious and I was responsible for demolishing several pints. Due to my change of plans (I don't drink beer with breakfast foods - the best laid plans and all that), I started looking over the other menu items - quite a bit to digest there (sorry about the puns). I settled on the Seared Pork Belly with fresh Kimchi and Cascabel sauce. I really enjoyed this dish as it reminded me of Sam-Gyup-Sal (inverted wok pork-belly - if you haven't tried Honey Pig in Duluth you're missing out). The pork-belly was on the edge of crispy with a fair bit of caramelization topped with "kimchee" - in all quite good and worth ordering. My only thought and something I voiced to Bill Brown when he asked how I liked it was that the kimchee could use a bit more fermentation. I told him that even a week of exposure would give it a bit of fermentation and improve the acid, something that the fat needed in my opinion and he seemed receptive to the idea (I usually hate to give this type of feedback but will if asked) For an entrée I ordered the Crab Cake Sandwich - blue claw crab with fresh poblano slaw. This was also quite good and could use a little punch in my opinion (I like a stronger contrast in flavors than most - I think most of you would find it just fine) - next time I'll order a side of spicy mustard or a remoulade if they have it. Not that I would slather the sandwich with it, but it's nice to have something vinegary with the richness of the crab. Some other selections that looked interesting: Smoked Salmon wrapped shrimp with red beans and rice; There burger - grass fed beef, sautéed onion and poblano pepper; Roasted Duck Leg with braised turnip greens and butternut squash puree; Garlic Rosemary fries. I think I spent about an hour in the pub (live jazz!) and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Brookhaven certainly deserves and needs this fine establishment and hope them great success. read more

I came here the first time with Andrew H and we thoroughly enjoyed the bison burgers, although they are quite greasy. (talking to the waitress last time, she indicated they put some kind of fat or lard into the ground bison, so it will stick together better, so if you think you're getting a healthier burger, you're not. The bun is soaked with fat drippings from the burger, enough that I questioned whether it was really bison.) The beer menu is interesting, and while the food menu is restricted, when they have bison like this, then you don't need much to choose from. That said, we had this evening the WORST service experience I've had in twelve years in Atlanta. First, Travis forgot to enter our order. We waited FOREVER! But he also seemed to have a memory of a fruit fly. He forgot two drink orders, a fork, and a replacement napkin at different times. We'd ask, and then those things would never show up. (Wherever you come down on the "Legalize It" debate, I think we can all agree that smoking out ahead of going to work is NOT going to help you do a good job.) So we get the whole issue (70 minute wait for food, with two other tables also getting the bison burger being served before us, despite arriving after us). The manager or owner -- whatever the New Age kind of guy is -- comes over and apologizes and says, "we really want you to come back" and leaves us with a couple of wooden nickels on the table. Turns out these are good for a free $4 beer next time. so when the food comes, he comes over (as does the chef later) and asks "well I hope the food was worth the wait". Well, NO IT WASN'T!!! We tell them it's a good burger but it shouldn't take that long. The New Age guy says he'll comp something on the menu. Travis comes back over and tells us the'll take 15% off our bill, which was about $90. "OK" I think, but then the bill comes and he's taken $6 or $7 off. They couldn't even get that right. So I left $80 for $79.39 and gave them back the wooden nickels; I won't be using them. And before the flames come out about my tip, I'm usually a 20-25% tipper, but the repeated errors and lack of corrective action was just terrible. The poor service made me feel robbed for the $80 I gave. "There" is going out of business. It's a nice concept but it's poorly executed. In my experience these businesses fail, so if you want to try the burger, then you better make it quick. Moreover, they really need a no drugs on the work day policy. I've tried it. I won't be back. When I want a burger, I'll hit Canoe (yes, the best in ATL), Farm Burger or even Flip, you know, places with SERVICE! read more

I like There. It's a bar in the Brookhaven Town Center development on the same block as Lucky's. And like Lucky's it has TVs on the wall tuned into sports. But that's where the resemblance ends. There has a huge selection of beer on tap and the staff is knowledgeable. The food, unlike its neighbor, is actual food, not just the usual bar food. There lives up to the name of gastropub. Food's great; beer's great. And there manages to achieve gastropub-iness without pretense or pre-packaging or a corporate executive chef. And while I can't sweat the hamburger is the best in Metro Atlanta, I can swear that it is the best hamburger I've had in Metro Atlanta. They grind their own beef with the blend the owner believes gives the best results. The patties are thick enough that I really can get it it medium rare -- just the way like it. And the service had improved noticeably on my last visit a week ago. Finally -- and I'm going to apologize in advance to all you young college football fans -- There's is not one of those sports bars where you have to shout at the top of your voice to talk tothe people at your table. Went there for brunch today. Very disappointed! First off, ordered the Bloody Mary. I couldn't finish it. It was way too spicy. I am convinced that the extreme spiciness of the drink is intended to mask the fact that there was little to no alcohol included in this concoction. It came with a garnish of 3 blah pickles and a strip of bacon with cold bacon fat caked on the side. I love bacon but did not touch this. Ordered the French toast bacon grilled cheese dish. I was hesitant to order this but the server insisted that it was delicious! Sadly, she was wrong. The dish consisted of two regular slices of bread filled with some sort of cream cheese concoction with a couple strips of bacon in the middle. When you make French toast with regular sliced bread, it tends to be mushy in the middle. When you add cream cheese it was really a mushy mess with some tasteless bacon added. My greatest fears were realized. If the over spicy non-alcoholic bloody Mary wasn't enough, my dish came with some overly spiced Home fries. These were really just chunks of potatoes with a bunch of spice on them with a few onions. Now don't get me wrong I like spice but both of these were just over the top. I should have known that something was awry when we arrived at 12 o'clock on a Saturday morning and there were only three other patrons in the restaurant. They were smart they were just sticking to drinking beer. With so many other options for brunch I would not waste my time or money going to There again. Our server was very nice however. read more
