I'd rate Mama's cupboard four and a half stars. I ordered a tofu bahn mi to go. It was ready in about ten minutes. Sandwich starts with classic Vietnamese baguette. Super crispy and sturdy. Sandwich was packed with plenty of fried tofu. The spicy mayo as well as the cilantro provided most of the flavor. Plenty crunch coming from pickled carrots and daikon. It was priced around $12; totaled $15 and change with tax and tip included. read more

Grabbed takeout from this spot and was pleasantly surprised! I got a lemongrass chicken banh mi ($12.50) and it was pretty good! The sandwich was well filled and there was a good amount of chicken. The salad inside offers a nice freshness as well. The only thing I didn't love was how soggy the bread was after only 5 mins but I still enjoyed the flavor nonetheless. Stopped in to grab a Bahn Mi. Had a bit of a hard time finding the place since it's tucked away in a basement. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the sweetest and most helpful lady. I had intended to take my sandwich to go, but the place was so cool and empty (circa 2:40pm on a Weds.) that I decided to stay. The establishment's decor screams "I am a bar and we play live music here". The lady who helped me confirmed they have live music there (I believe she said) "every night after 7pm". Mama's Cupboard and "No Work Allowed" (Jazz Club) operate out of the same space. The sandwich was very nice! I was in the market for a "classic" Bahn Mi (they don't offer it), but, who can say no to roast pork? Their Do Chua (pickled carrots and radish "slaw") + cilantro in that perfectly toasted bread truly helped hit the mark as far as what I was craving. Not giving 5 stars 2ndary to value. Even though I very much enjoyed this meal, a coffee and a sandwich at $24 + change out the door is a bit too steep IMO. read more

My experience here was NOT what everyone else's seems to have been. The coconut shrimp banh mi was fantastic but the pork belly was inedibly bad; like really really bad. Hard fat and nothing else. Expensive as hell and straight in the garbage. The place is a rip off but I'd get the shrimp one again anyway. Stumbled upon by Mama's Cupboard vendor at Winter Village Bryant Park today. Mainly based on Vietnamese banh mis, empanada puffs, and different skewers and sauce with a Thai twist. Standard pricing for Midtown West, about $15 to $25 as the range. Can get steep if you decide to get a soft-shell crab sammie or coconut shrimp sammie. Accepts both cash and credit/debit card. Fast service from friendly staff. Once you've placed an order, he/she hands you a small slip of paper as the receipt and then you wait for your # to be called. Got myself a huge-looking grilled lemongrass chicken sandwich for $14...$15.24 with the tax included. The bread stayed crispy from start to finish just the way I'd liked it, even when there was a slab of spicy mayo in between of the sandwich. Nothing had gotten soggy or slimy from the spicy mayo as in texture wise. Didn't hurt my teeth or the corner of my mouth when taking a huge bite from the middle. Another thing, the pickled veggies weren't overly sour as in taste wise. Flavorful and just enough! Now moving onto the grilled chicken, it was tender, juicy and meaty plus flavorful but nothing was burnt which was marvelous! Always loved the freshly taste of cilantro in my banh mi sandwich. Some people might not like its unique odor/flavor but I absolutely love popping it into my mouth before devouring the tasty creation!!! Came here for a pre-dinner snack on a Saturday. The entire restaurant, which is very small inside, was completely empty. A few people came in later on but it doesn't seem to get crowded and is probably more of a local spot. The woman working the counter was very friendly. She took our order easily which was a lemongrass chicken bahn mi. There's a nice bathroom in the back of the restaurant and limited seating. Since the restaurant is below street level, you get a cool view out the window which is lined with potted plants. The food didn't take too long to come out. The bahn mi was delicious! Stuffed with meat and vegetables. It was very savory. I thought it was perfect but one of my sisters thought the bread was slightly over toasted. It wasn't burned just very crunchy which I personally like! Very cute and quaint place and promising food! Wish I got to try more and hope I can in the future. read more

A really good, somewhat hidden Vietnamese cafe on 53rd St in Turtle Bay. It's on the basement level so easy to miss, but the banh mi here was a fabulous discovery! The sandwiches are packed with tons of fresh veggies and tender meats, and the bread used seems pretty fresh. I've tried the regular banh mi with grilled pork and the caramelized pork belly one and both were absolutely fireeee. And the value is great -- around $13 for a giant, delicious sandwich! The vietnamese iced coffee was also great, as was the service -- the lady taking orders at the counter also served us at our table and was kind and attentive. Not gonna lie, I kinda low key love this place and the food. The pork rice bowl was incredibly filling and flavors felt very authentic.

This was a random Vietnamese place my friend and I stumbled upon. It is located down a staircase and is actually very authentic. We both had bowls of grilled pork with rice vermicelli. They are generous with the portions of meat and big on flavor too. We also some cups of Vietnamese coffee which were excellent too. The place is not fancy and only has three small tables inside for dine in. However, if you are looking for excellent quality Vietnamese food, this is where you'll find it. read more

I've had the vermicelli rice bowl, but it tasted and was prepared very differently than what I'm used to. the veggies were largely sliced and a bit hard to chew on, and there was very little vermicelli. flavor was okay. I also got the vietnamese iced coffee, and while sweet, it didn't taste authentic. I've noticed that viet iced coffees tend to be on the thicker side due to the condensed milk, but I didn't quite taste that in this drink. overall, a decent place to grab a quick bite as their service is fast, but there may be better places if you're interested in authenticity. read more

Amazing place! If you're vegetarian you won't get a better deal than here. The tofu is perfectly fried and tastes amazing. The prices are also super reasonable, the ban mi is under $10 and it's massive. They also have a vegan duck that I haven't gotten the chance try. They also have kimchi fries which was average- the portion is huge and it's shoe string fries but there's very little kimchi on it, so the fries on the bottom are very bland. I'm so disappointed I'm giving only two stars because I really wanted to like this place but it was a total miss. I came in and ordered the mock duck rice bowl and the whole bowl was pretty much just rice and some pieces of lettuce and shredded carrots. it was crazy there were like 4 small pieces of mock duck. almost no sauce in the bowl or on the side. It almost felt like they ran out of duck and plucked a piece or two from another bowl that's how scarce it was. I paid 16 dollars for essentially a bowl of rice! Unfortunately because of this I will have to stop coming here. I know there's inflation but seriously that was crazy... I've ordered from Mama's Cupboard many times before but lately something has changed with this restaurant. Theit food is just ok now, their service is not good and the manager is totally rude and has no respect for the customer. My order was supposed to be delivered within 30 mins... after 45 mins I called the restaurant and they said they'll get it to me right away. I waited another 20 mins and still nothing. After an hour and a half I called and asked that my order be cancelled and my credit card be credited because I never received the order. I received my credit card statement yesterday and the charge was still on it. I called the restaurant hoping to resolve the issue without calling my credit card company. The manager came on the phone and was totally rude and disrespectful, she kept talking over me and wouldn't allow me to speak. Simple solution however, I called my credit card and was given an immediate credit. I will never order from Mama's Cupboard again! read more

a small, unassuming spot located down the staircase of E 53rd in midtown east, i can definitely say this is one of the best banh mi places i've been to in nyc so far! my partner and i tried their 2 vegan banh mis-- the vegan duck and crispy tofu banh mis-- and both tasted really great and hit the spot for my never-ending banh mi cravings. the bread is so fresh, crunchy, and crispy. the pickled vegetables tasted bold and fresh. the sauces were flavorful and tasty. the vegan duck was flavorful, the texture was chewy and tender. the crispy tofu was similarly immaculate in texture and flavor-- very crispy and sauced up nicely. the prices are affordable and the counter server was really kind and attentive! i highly recommend this spot and will definitely be back in the future to try out their other banh mi protein fillings. read more

Absolutely phenomenal find. My wife and I were walking around feeling a bit hungry. A quick yelp search led us to this place that is hidden away a bit. At first glance you would not think anything of it, but once you walk inside you begin to feel a bit more comfortable about your choice. I ordered a Bahn Mi, and my wife ordered the Summer Rolls. Both dishes were absolutely amazing. Super authentic, very fresh and flavors were full on point. It was a great lunch that was both filling and not too heavy. Ordered a few Bahn Mi a few months ago for lunch on a weekend. Ran me a bit over $15 and took a while to make, but wow it was delicious! Coming from LA I'd never pay more than 4 ($6 now with inflation) for a regular bahn mi but THIS IS NO REGULAR BAHN MI. Much stronger flavors with nontraditional fillings. If you compare it to a "normal bahn mi" you will be disappointed. But given how full I was and how happy me and my coworkers were, I think it was well worth it. I was more interested in the regular pork bahn mi or chicken version. Weird both weren't available on the app. I knew I got pork belly but I really shouldn't have because I don't like chewing fat. I feel so bad how I picked out and threw out most of the pork belly after 2/3 through. I just can't. The flavor itself was nice tho which is why I look forward to trying the regular pork and chicken. I like how they had a mountain of carrot shreds. It's refreshing without being too tart or too sweet. I like cilantro and would love there to be more. Their bread is interesting. When I first pick it up thinking it's the soft type. When I unwrap the parchment paper, the top half splits open (probably due to uneven cutting and toasting process which increases fragility). When eating, it's not as rock hard as some but not soft and fluffy either. I feel like they should work on making the structure more intact or even attempt a soft version. I remember they used spicy mayo and maybe something else. No pâté. I can do with less mayo. When I went to pick up, I saw how their interior is so cute. It looks like a mix of a cafe and someone's home. I'd be interested in coming here again just to sit around. Overall there's room for improvement but I'm open to trying again. read more

Visiting the winter village at Bryant park, I had the pork bahn mi sandwich and it was so flavorful and delicious. The woman working in the stall was kind and answered all of my questions about the different options. The size of the sandwich was good for the price and it was pretty filling (although because it was so good I could have eaten two easily). Their menu is not overwhelming but everything we ordered were delicious! We got the coconut shrimp and crab banh mi and also the fried calamari. Their fried calamari is probably the best I've had. I'm not quite sure what sauce they use but it's not just your regular fried calamari - they toss it with this amazing sauce (taste similar to gochujang) and it's sooo tasty! We ordered takeout from Mama's Cupboard and did so mainly to compare this to one of our staples in the area (Boilicious). Since it was lunch time, we decided to try out their Banh mi. We ordered one of their summer rolls, the grilled chicken banh mi and BBQ pork banh mi. We placed an order for delivery and ordered 3 banh mis in total (to save one for later). Unfortunately when everything arrived we were short one banh mi and had to call the restaurant for them to re-send the one that was missing. The summer roll didn't have as much shrimp in it but the main disappointment was the ratio of the other fillings. It felt like we were eating more of a lettuce and carrot wrap than anything else which was just not what we expected. The banh mi wasn't bad but the distribution of pickled vegetables to meat was off and it was too overpowering. The pickled vegetables made it taste a bit vinegary and took away from the flavor of the main protein. The grilled chicken on its own tasted well seasoned and wasn't dry. I was surprised by that. However, unfortunately the bbq pork was more mediocre and didn't measure up to what we're used to. We really wanted to like this place but were sorely disappointed. Note that this review is only for the banh mis and summer roll. Their other dishes might be worth a shot but we'll probably be sticking with our favorite spot after this. read more

First time trying this restaurant and I really thought the bahn mi sandwich with BBQ pork was delicious! The ingredients tasted fresh and was still warm by the time of pickup. I just wish the carrots were cut thinner, but other than that would recommend. We also got the kimchi fries and calamari and I'd definitely recommend the kimchi fries.
