This place has great coffee! Simply put, it's amazing! It has been some time since I had their coffee and even when I last had, it was from their mobile truck at a festival so long ago, I'm not sure which one! A quick stop here yesterday was just what I needed to get over a busy day and have my caffeine jolt for the evening plans! The place is decorated very nicely with the ships theme and everywhere you look, you discover another themed item! The staff was super friendly upon walking in especially given they were closing in five minutes so that was appreciated! As for the coffee, there were several things I would have liked to try but ultimately decided on their special, the Pungo! I was sold on this when I read that it has blueberry in it from Pungo, VB! Because they were closing up and we were the last to get coffee, I also got to watch them make it which was fun! The drink turned out beautifully and oh so delicious! The blueberry base was a perfect way to naturally sweeten the drink and the combined taste was so good! I also appreciated that the barista made sure to get the espresso in it just right given that they were having a few technical difficulties with the machine! Though it took longer, he worked diligently to be sure that I got top-notch espresso in my drink and for that I was very thankful! Overall, this place has coffee on point! This is seriously one of the best cold brews I have experienced in the area. The location is a little difficult to find at first especially with the nearby street construction. The aesthetics of the building inside and out are great. This spot has super cold vibes and is a really chill spot just to hang. Definitely make the time to swing into this spot. read more

Our first time to Three Ships was the weekend after Thanksgiving and it was packed!! Thankfully we were able to sneak a table in the corner for 4 to hang out and enjoy our goods. There are a few tables and counter seats available. They also have an outdoor patio with 4-5 tables where I saw some cute doggos hang out too. We came hungry so thankfully they do have some food items available. We got the matcha latte, golden milk latte, a breakfast biscuit and a spinach hand pie. The lattes were definitely not like your chain coffee place but I appreciate that they use whole milk from Homestead creamery - the best milk!! Albeit a little expensive at over $5/each. My husband enjoyed his breakfast biscuit but I thought the hand pie was okay. The pastry was nice and flaky and just the right amount of flavor, but the filling was a little cold in the middle and the taste was just okay. There is a small parking lot located behind them that they share with the other local businesses - definitely check those out! Not 1 but 2 HEARTS on my coffee! So this place is simply perfect! I'm not a huge coffee connoisseur but my husband is and he had a FANTASTIC Pour Over while I had a beautiful Cortado! I say beautiful because the guy who prepared my coffee made an awesome heart with steamed milk! My first coffee art experience! (As I mentioned I'm not a coffee drinker, so I committed a major sin by requesting additional steamed milk but the staff was super nice and he made me a second heart!!!!) Let's talk about the food. Way overpriced. You are paying for the aesthetic. The sandwich and burrito had no flavor. I paid $9 for a tiny wrapped tortilla with egg, hash brown, and cheese. NINE DOLLARS. Plus $2.65 for bacon?!?! For $9 that should be included. Coffee is good but you pay $6 for a small 12oz coffee. Between two people our total was $41 for two coffees and two breakfast sandwiches- I'll never pay this much money at a coffee shop again. It was a little hard for me to rate their restaurant with the pick up at the window only service. So, I will go off of the food and the coffee. It was pretty hot outside so we decided to actually eat in our car even though they had nice seating all the way around two sides of the restaurant. I got a double espresso with a little milk. The flavor was great and I'd get that again. My daughter and I ordered bacon, egg, and cheese biscuits and they were really good. I was also surprised at how filling one biscuit sandwich was. This coffee shop isn't ideal for the frou frou coffee drinkers; it's more for those who love the stronger brews. I used to be a frou frou coffee ONLY kinda gal, who takes 5 mins to order, just because of my list of customizations. They don't do that here. I found that out, the first time I came. They told me no when I tried to add this and that. I was thinking, "whaaaaaat?" But they like to keep their coffee pure and strong I guess. The last time I went, I heard the guy in front of me ask, "Can I get a cold brew with 2 shots of extra espresso?" and the barista said, "We don't like to add extra espresso to our coffee. We can make you a coffee and then do a separate order of just 2 shots of espresso." He said fine. Their coffee is GOOD though. I'm learning to enjoy and appreciate a stronger cup. So weird! I used to only drink milk or creamer with a SPLASH of COFFEE! They do have a good cold one though, called the "Land Lubber," which is cold brew with vanilla cream. Very light vanilla taste. So good. I still have to add stevia to it though. They do have a few other drinks with milk, but I've noticed they're known for their black coffee more. So that's my coffee story. About the place itself, it is BEAUTIFUL. It's a Hipster's/Instagrammer's/Snapchatter's/Yelper's DREAM with all its natural lighting, plants, wood, beautiful typography, and classy nautical (three ships, duh) decor. Their food is pretty decent too, although I didn't get full from their breakfast biscuit. I probably should have ordered a handmade pie! Those looked delish! But of course, you come here for the coffee. I would definitely return. Again, don't expect the fancy and super light stuff, it's a lot of strong and straight up coffee & coffee flavor. read more

What a cute coffee shop! Very hipster ambience but relaxing. The staff were friendly and helpful. They had plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. We went on a Monday afternoon. Not too packed but I'm sure it does during the weekend. If you're looking for parking, it's located on the side of the cafe and has a large sign of which restaurant customers can park there as well so you won't miss it. So, I wasn't sure what to order since it was my first time going there. I love coffee but I'm not sure of the types of coffee to drink. I looked up reviews and saw that their lattes were a hit so I ordered the Nilla From Manila (bourbon vanilla latte) to go. I was a little disappointed with the cost, the amount given, and also the taste. I had spent around $7 for a 8oz to go cup of latte which was kind of a bummer to pay that much for coffee. I'm more of a extra cream and sugar type of girl. The latte was quite strong and robust and barely had any cream. Besides that, I'm sure they have a delicious menu that I have yet to experiment. A friend and I recently came here while we were adventuring around the 757. Surprisingly, I hadn't been to this coffee shop so, of course I had to check them out. I loved that this location is a couple blocks from the VB oceanfront. Perfect place for coffee & conversation, reading, studying, and of course for the perfect insta worthy photo. I find that it is super convenient that they have off street parking. With options for indoor or outdoor seating this place makes grabbing coffee by the beach a breeze. The staff was helpful and friendly! I ordered a Horchata latte (hot), not entirely sure how I felt about it given I thought it would be more like a regular horchata drink. Went for the first time today and will definitely be back! The almond milk cappuccino was perfection! I really appreciated that all of the employees were masked (currently in a COVID surge and I'm pregnant) and they were all so nice and accommodating! I've never been a huge fan of Texas style brisket but theirs was so tender! The horseradish was pretty strong, I got a bite with a chunk of it and boy did it make my eyes water, overall so delicious! The horseradish offset the sweet pickles really nicely! My husband got the Becky and I managed to sneak a bite in between him scarfing it down. We both got a horchata espresso, we didn't really care for it, it had a very gritty texture, I want to attribute it to them possibly making their horchata from scratch but it didn't seem right. This place is very popular so I suppose you should take my review with a grain of salt -- so to speak. The staff is friendly and I will say that the patrons are very friendly too. My wife and I sat outside and had a nice conversation with two gentlemen who were more than happy to describe some of the better things to do in the area. The coffee is good, but any place like this will have decent coffee. My disappointment was with my breakfast order. First, I must award the Three Ships menu writer for the most amazing description of a selection that does not match what is delivered. It was so different that I was convinced that they had gotten my order wrong and when I went to show the server what I ordered he replied "yes, that's it." In fact, to add to my confusion, as he placed it on the table he called it something different than what is on the menu board: The description was along these lines: Carolina smoked premium chicken, with Carolina vinegar sauce, served over a "some specially described" toast. (I don't remember how the toast was described.) What was delivered, and as the server set it down he called it this -- was "Chicken Salad." And to add insult to injury, it was dry chicken, with no real flavor (think boiled too long) with a slight slathering of vinegar. If it was chicken salad it was pretty bad -- but if it was Carolina smoked premium chicken, it was awful. As for the special toast? It was so thin and crisp it was basically melba toast. I also tried the jelly biscuit which was small and really not all the special. I recommend passing this place by and heading to the breakfast/coffee shop across the street with surf boards. I make it a point to visit Three Ships any time I'm in Virginia Beach. They serve up excellent coffee and food, have welcoming employees, and sport a really beautiful decor inside and out (despite the road construction going on outside). I've tried some of the competitors nearby and this is the place to come to if you want a great cup of coffee or espresso done right, not a milk-and-sugar drink with a splash of weak, poorly extracted espresso or coffee that's been hanging out in a Mr. Coffee since Tuesday. I'd recommend the cold brew (either black or the Land Lubber) and the Becky biscuit. And the cookies. Or, you know, literally anything here. read more

One of my favorite things to do when I travel is try out new coffee roasters in the area. This was my first stop in Virginia Beach and it definitely set the bar for my expectations. The shop had a very unique atmosphere and the staff was incredible. The coffee was a little bitter but still very good. There was a whole block market going on while I was there with a lot of vendors with everything from T-shirt's to local honey to handmade jewelry. Very fun place to visit and sample the local fare. So I ordered a flavored iced latte. They have no sugar-free options but fine. A lot of places don't. They also have nothing but whole milk, almond milk or oat milk. I'm not 5 yrs old so I don't need/drink whole milk. I opted for almond milk and they charged $1.50 extra!!! I'm not kidding. My drink was $7.50 and it was this teeny tiny little cup, about 6 ounces. They didn't fill it all the way up but I didn't even bother to say anything because the cashier was already blatantly annoyed with me. She got a bit angry when I asked why they didn't have a bigger option, because the drink would be gone in about 5 minutes. I guess it's a good thing though since I'm sure they would've charged about $10 for a normal sized iced latte. I went here for a work day on rainy day. Was a bit crowded than I expected so I had to sit in front of the speaker. Work-wise, I'd probably only come here if I didn't have any meetings. The music is a bit competing when listening to folks on a call. If you are sitting at the bars, it doesn't stay comfortable for long since you don't have a barstool with a back. From a regular customer perspective, I enjoyed the experience. The whole staff was really friendly and accommodating. I ordered a Nilla from Manila with almond milk, half the pumps of flavor. I am bummed that is their only alternative milk but they do make it in-house. The coffee was delicious and not too sweet. I can imagine what are regular one would taste like. I have been wanting to try Three Ships since they opened, but they and so many other amazing businesses fall victim to the "I Live in Chesapeake and don't want to go all the way to the Oceanfront for Coffee" crowd. I just happened to be in that area on a Saturday and decided to give them a try. I had a Bourbon aged vanilla latte and a Handpie filled with Spinach, Feta, Onion and Cream Cheese. The Cream Cheese was a scary ingredient to me. The employee there mentioned that he sees similar reactions to mine and that the cream cheese would not be dessert consistency; he was right. The savory ingredients complimented the sweet and the pastry was the perfect vessel for the two; kind of like putting jelly on a biscuit. The latte was amazing, easily some of the best coffee I've had. I was happy to learn that that several restaurants around Hampton Roads serve their coffee and they are always looking for new places to serve it. We were here on vacation and luckily they had Chemex filters so I could make coffee in my room.
