after being in the Shenandoah mountains hiking and camping for 2 days-- thunderbird exceeded our expectations!! They seated our party of 8 within 10 mins, even though it was pretty busy inside on a Sunday morning. The service was fast, and everything we ordered tasted seasoned and home cooked, also cooked to almost perfection. the home fries were crispy and seasoned and soft on the inside, the sausage patty was homemade and delicious, the blueberry cream cheese French toast wasn't too sweet at all!!! Didn't even need syrup. The fruit cups??? AMAZING. They had the best fruit, not the gross soft grapes and old melon combo most diners have. LOVE this place! Wow! So many diners I have been to are trashy and run-down. Not this place! The signage out front could use some work. The neon doesn't work anymore. It's probably just dirty & can't light up anymore. We were seated right away, in a booth, at my son's preference. I have a lot of vision issues, and their menu is all words, words, words. Not very good with the contrast. Brown on tan menu. It was hard for me to interpret the menu, and there weren't any pictures. (I guess I usually order by what looks good in a picture, but I didn't realize I do that until I came to this place.) The waitress was so helpful! I told her I have vision issues. I asked if there was a picture menu, she said no. But then she asked me what I was in the mood for. I told her, "Belgian waffles," and she gave me choices & helped me come up with the Belgian waffle with the bacon & pecan topping. And I also ordered a sausage patty. I ordered the London Fog drink which is Earl Gray tea with milk and vanilla added. It was so good! The tea bag didn't have a manufacturer label, so I don't know which company the tea was from. The coffee that my son ordered was so good. He loved it. It's locally roasted, too! Our food came - my son got the mushroom & Swiss burger. I got the Belgian waffle (see above). Oh my gosh, the food was amazing! I tried one of his French fries. Best French fry I have had in a very long time. WOW. My sausage had rosemary mixed in with it - clearly it's their own sausage recipe. Wow. It was delicious. The waffle with the pecan bacon topping was amazing. I was eager to just gobble it up, but I tried to eat slowly and enjoy it. About 3/4ths of the way through eating our meals, my son said, "let's come back." We planned for "in 4 days" around his own restaurant-work schedule. But then, a few bites later, he pulled out his calendar and realized we can come in tomorrow morning before he works a double shift at his own restaurant. Hahahahaha! We will be back tomorrow. The best things I can say about the Thunderbird Cafe are that Amber is a wonderful server and that we do not have to return. We ordered two pancakes and a Belgian waffle. The first order arrived almost warm. The replacement order was hot but the pancakes were dark on top but undercooked and gooey on the inside. Obviously, the grill is too hot for pancakes. Came here with my family for breakfast while staying at Massanutten resort. I had the Blueberry cream cheese French toast and I have to say it's the best French toast I've ever had! My husband had a steak omelette with fried potatoes and the kids had chocolate chip pancakes. Everything was delicious! Everything tasted fresh and homemade. Can't forget the lavender ginger mimosa which was definitely a treat. The service was excellent as well; Morgan was very friendly and had great recommendations. I highly recommend this spot. We stopped by here to have Breakfast before we got on the road to travel home. We've past this place several times leaving out of the Massanutten Resort and the Parking lot was always full. It's a cute Diner Style place, we was greeted and seated as soon at we came in. Our waitress came right over and took our Drink orders. I forgot her name (Short Blonde Hairstyle) but she was so nice and gave us plenty of time to check out the Menus. The food came out hot and fast. And everyone seemed to like what they ordered. This unpretentious diner has what I would call "elevated" diner food - no, not like kale fries or something dumb, but they give their dishes a wonderfully "extra" flavor that takes simple diner food to a whole new level. I ordered the blueberry cream cheese French toast AND the meatloaf since I wanted to try both. French toast was huge (crazy huge!) and so rich and delicious. It had a hint of cinnamon (I hate when it's overwhelmingly cinnamon-y) and definitely not eggy (which is what happens when I make it at home). Comes with a side of syrup that you really don't need because of the generous scoops of blueberry cream cheese and tons of whipped cream.This would make a great dessert. Meatloaf was good. It wasn't incredible like the other dishes we had, but decent with a nice onion flavor, not a noticeable amount of breadcrumbs, and the side of smashed potatoes were yummy. I think there are better options, like ... The country fried steak! This CF steak is the king of the country. Unlike any CF steak I have ever eaten: crispy, crunchy sirloin (not cubed steak) with savory, juicy flavor. Available for breakfast or as a lunch/dinner entree. Make sure you don't pass this up. Also, I'm not a breakfast potato person, but I will make an exception for these potatoes! This diner has beer, wine and cocktails (bacon Bloody Mary, anyone?), awesomely priced mimosa carafes and really good espresso and nitro brewed, fresh roasted coffee. When's the last time you went to a dinner that did lattes? To top it off, service was so friendly, fast and just plain nice. COVID-19 safety measures: Every other table seating, all staff wearing masks, tables wiped down. Felt safe eating here.
