Big thanks to my wife for jumping on an opportunity to attend a conference at Grand Hyatt Kauai. After booking, I jumped on OpenTable to reserve Tidepools and luckily snagged one during our time here. Tidepools is absolutely a must-visit! Whether it is for the experience of dining on the water, upscale foods, or kind service, you have to splurge for at least one night on vacation! We had been to Tidepools together a few years ago, pre-kiddo, but this recent time was memorable thanks to the kind wait-staff. They had crayons for our little one, allowed us to walk around and view the fish nearby, and supplied us with delicious and fresh ube rolls, which our toddler loved (so much so that we had to take her actual kid's meal to-go). I ordered the Tai Chi, which is their version of the Mai Tai, and it was solid - great balance, and I almost ordered another one, but our little one was tired. To eat we got an appetizer of scallops, which was amazing - slightly sweet crust and juicy inside. My main dish was the ribeye, which was tender, cooked to my liking, and larger than I expected. Overall our best meal thus far during our Kauai trip, and if I had the income, would definitely eat here more than once per trip! read more

We were really looking forward to returning to Tidepools after visiting on our honeymoon three years ago. It was one of the highlights of that trip, so we couldn't wait to come back. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to our previous experience. The hostess was friendly and welcoming, and the service was okay, but the food was very average. I ordered one of the specials, which was particularly disappointing, and neither my wife nor I finished our meals. It's a real shame because we had such great memories of this restaurant. I think you are paying the premium for the resort and the atmosphere, which is fine, but the food itself is not worth the very steep price tag (around $65+ for an entree and $20 for cocktail). For a family of five, you could easily spend $400. This was a nice one time meal but we wouldn't go back due to the price tag and the food not up to what it costs. Because of the price, I would caution families to look at the menu ahead of time before dining. You can find the same/better food off resort without the resort price tag. read more

This was our second visit in two years to Tidepools. We left both times saying it was the best meal of our Hawaiian vacation. We are big fans of the show "The Bear"--dining at Tidepools is the closest we have been to experiencing that level of service. Our server was phenomenal--she immediately wished us a happy anniversary, offered to take our picture, and provided recommendations. Drink glasses were never below half full and plates were promptly cleared. The Crab Cake appetizer was divine. Full of crab instead of fillers with an amazing sauce. The Hawaiian Catch was delicious--cooked to perfection and a sampling of so many wonderful seafood delicacies! We were treated to the malsadas for dessert and they were just as tasty as we remembered them years ago--good luck choosing your favorite topping! This place reminds me Ruinas Del Mar at HR Aruba from the koi ponds and great view into the resort. Awesome Ambience and decor. Loved it. They also have a large bar with tables to dine as another option if you didn't have any reservations. Our waiter was fine and his assistant sure stopped by a lot to refill waters, pick up dirty plates, and replaced the table light, when it went out. The food was really good and their ube bread was to die for. We had to try their galbi and the quality of meat was so good and flavorful. I had their spicy fish, Togarashi spiced Opah, and boy was it spicy!!! I think our waiter put down extra spicy in the receipt. Ugh. This the four star rating. We came here twice on our family vacation to Kauai. We weren't staying at the Grand Hyatt, but our rental house was a short walk away. Our first time here was a date night for my wife and I. We had a 5:30 reservation. We arrived early and ordered some drinks at the bar. I got their Aloha Old Fashioned which is an Old Fashioned with a tropical twist and my wife had a Raspberry Lemondrop. The drinks were great. The ambiance of this place is top notch. All open air underneath tropical hut type structure with water all around and resort views. It's perfect. Food wise we split a Scallops appetizer. Very Good. For our entree we split a steak (filet), shrimp,and lobster combination. The food was excellent. Steak was cooked perfectly, and had a compound butter/red wine demi. We split items as we wanted to save room for dessert. My wife usually is limited in choices because she can'thave gluten, but they had a number of items on the dessert menu marked gluten free. We ordered the Coconut Cream Cheesecake and the Molten Chocolate Cake. Both were amazing. They also had a Macadamia Nut Creme Brulee marked gluten free as well. Great Job having those options. Our second visit was just for dessert and drinks with our kids as we wanted to bring our kids because two of them also can't have gluten, so we wanted to let them enjoy all the gluten free desserts. Our service on both nights was perfect. Price Wise definitely expensive but not as bad as some high-end steakhouses in other places I've been too. Turns out, it is their complimentary bread. Those ube Parmesan rolls are to die for. When a basket came while we were still perusing the menu, I ached to blast through five baskets of it and really had to hold myself back because otherwise how would I eat anything off the actual menu?? But really, warm, soft bread -- amazing. Review would have been 4 stars, but the bread garners an extra star. I ordered the Hawaiian Catch which apparently is their most popular dish. It includes a sampling of grilled seafood--a jumbo shrimp, scallop, lobster tail, and daily fish (it was swordfish, but I couldn't eat it due to pregnancy so they substituted with mahi mahi for me). This is over purple sweet potato and broccolini. It was delicious! Very much enjoyed being able to try multiple different seafood items. The fish was not as tender as I'd like, but everything else was good. The sweet potato and broccolini were good sides to the seafood--both yummy and not too salty. Let's just say the best part of the meal was the complementary bread: buttery fresh bread rolls swirled with taro -- Should've grabbed the rolls and left. We had the Tofu Pad Thai and the Hawaiian catch as our main entrées. Normally, I find pad Thai quite addicting; but didn't even want to finish this version. It did have a slight spice kick to it, but otherwise it wasn't that flavorful- the dish was a bit too wet with soppy vegetables and locked peanut flavor, which should be a highlight of the dish. The Hawaiian catch came with lobster fish, and a scallop and a shrimp. A fish was the driest cut of fish. I've had all week on the island, the rest of the seafood was alright . They do have a Keiki menu with beef, shrimp, and chicken options- my son's beef Keiki meal was better than our adult entrees ! Service was attentive. Every dish we ordered was absolutely delicious, and the ambiance is stunning--nestled beside a peaceful koi pond with that perfect blend of elegance and island charm. The service was truly top-notch. Our server was attentive without ever being intrusive. My water glass never dropped below half-full--he must've come by at least five times during our two-hour dinner, always with a friendly attitude and genuine hospitality. I was very impressed with Tidepools. The setting is very pretty and the service was on point. We were celebrating a milestone birthday and reserved table #42 which has a separate area over the pond. This is the most requested table, it accommodates up to 6 people and has a $450 food and beverage minimum. Everything we ordered was fresh, well prepared, beautifully presented and flavorful. The bread they give you at the start of the meal is to die for! I personally loved the Hawaiian Catch, the scallops and the Hamachi. Seating was smooth, our drinks arrived quickly, with appetizers, everyone enjoyed that with the bread rolls. I made a reservation for me and my boyfriend about a month in advance and were able to snag a table for 6PM on a Monday. I was so amazed at the restaurant interior, all of the tables were surrounded by "Tidepools". From the look of it seemed like they could fit all sized groups. Food (5/5): We wanted to try a variety of dishes, so we ordered the Kalbi ribs, the roasted vegetable medallion, pomme frites, and the Tidepools housemade pasta. Funnily, the fries were our favorite dish we ordered because of how crispy and thick they were. My boyfriend really enjoyed the free bread, so much that we ordered two servings of it. We have had so many amazing food experiences on Kauai over the years, and our anniversary dinner at Tidepools might be at the top of our list. We've been to Kauai 6 times, but this was our first time to Tidepools, and I wish we'd gone sooner. Our server, Kylen, was da best! He knew it was our anniversary and made sure we had a great experience the entire evening. First, the taro dinner rolls with garlic butter and cilantro were the best dinner rolls we've ever had, and after telling Kylen, he made sure we left with a few extras to-go. We then shared a fresh salad, which was all grown in the Hyatt's own garden. For entrees, we ordered the mac nut crusted mahi mahi with molokai sweet potato mash and the togorashi spiced opa with blue crab fried rice... They were perfect! And finally, knowing it was our anniversary, Kylen created a special dessert for us which included malasadas with dipping sauces (chocolate, caramel, and lilikoi raspberry) and ube "cannolis" drizzled with chocolate and coconut. We visited Tidepools while staying at the Grand Hyatt in Poipu, and it was truly one of the highlights of our trip. The ambience is stunning -- you're surrounded by water, tropical plants, and you can actually watch the fish swim by as you enjoy your meal. It feels peaceful, romantic, and so uniquely Hawaiian. I ordered the filet steak and my husband had the ribeye. Both were cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious -- some of the best steaks we've had in a long time. The staff also found out it was my husband's 45th birthday, and they surprised him with ice cream and a lava cake to celebrate. Such a thoughtful and sweet touch that made the night even more special! What an amazing adventure for dinner! Situated near the tide pools and swimming areas the restaurant sits in the middle of a large koi fish pond. Plan to reserve for early to get the best seats on the edge of the pond. Also come early and spend time walking around the grounds of the Hyatt! Lots of paths and well kept gardens. And of course the shopping areas inside the massive lobbies is worth a visit. So we were the first to be seated when they opened and got a great table. We started off with scallop appetizers which just melted in our mouths. Dinner was the best prepared seared ahi I've enjoyed anywhere. Our waiter Ron was excellent; friendly and comfortably attentive without being intrusive. Clearly very experienced as he c presented information without sounding like he'd memorized it. Made for a very enjoyable dining experience. So while we can't afford the hotel ($1200 a night ) we will go back next trip to Kauai. read more

We stayed at the Grand Hyatt for our anniversary and initially made reservations for dinner at a different restaurant. However, we decided to have our dinner at this spot last minute instead so we don't have to travel anymore. I called to see if we can make a reservation for that night and the manager on the phone said that reservations are full but they will happily accommodate us when we check in. But when we checked in, the hostess didn't seem too happy about not having any reservations. I told her that we were hotel guests and we were told that they will accommodate us if we walked in. And she just told us to sit down and wait. So we did. We were ok with waiting bc we didn't have reservations. I just wish that she was more nice and honest about how long it'll be or if it's still possible to be seated rather than being rude about it and being dismissive. I honestly would've been ok with just ordering for to go if they couldn't accommodate bc we were staying in the hotel anyway. We waited for over an hour, and never once, she called or acknowledged us. But when I came up to ask her, she looked surprised and said "I've been calling for you for a while" when in reality she never called our names not even once bc we literally was sitting next to her the whole entire time. The whole experience with the hostess was not great but our service from our server made up for it. Our server was Dennis. He was the most friendly, polite and attentive server. His service was top notch and he even recommended some things from the menu that he thinks we'll enjoy. We enjoyed our anniversary dinner because of him. So thank you! We got two drinks to start off: Lava flow and margarita. Both drinks were very strong! Just beware lol. Their Ube rolls are to die for! It was made fresh and was so soft and so delicious! We took malasadas to go so that we could share them with the kids.
