I don't know where to start... everything was beyond fantastic. My parents were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. We couldn't make reservations online so my brother called in and was able to book us a table. When we arrived we mentioned the anniversary, and they sat us at the most gorgeous spot in the place. The service was phenomenal!! Serious shout out to the staff (I'm so sad I didn't get their names, but I hope their managers see this and thank them for being so utterly amazing). We were given the offers of the specials and all of us went with sea food or salad. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of it. The portions were generous, and everything was yummy. I had the scallops and the beets & candied lemon and was completely satisfied. Both my dad and brother ordered the fisherman's catch and I was simply amazed with the quality and portion size of their meals!!! Seriously, chef's kiss The vibe in the restaurant was upbeat, but relaxing... very authentic and soothing. You feel like you're at a day spa with the coy fish splashing around, and everyone wearing smiles. To top it off, when I went to pay the bill, the server had a special dessert prepared for us already. It was seriously the sweetest surprise. We will definitely dine here any time we come back to the island, not only because the food was so great, but the service was top notch. We don't see a lot of that on the mainland. It only took 7 visits... 10 years of marriage... And 12 years in time... To FINALLY splurge and go all out at Tidepools restaurant located at the Beautiful Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa. Let me explain. My now wife and I first came to Kauai in 2012 and it was on that trip that I asked her to be my wife. Since that first visit, we have returned for our Honeymoon and multiple anniversaries including our 10 year Anniversary in 2024. On this most recent trip, we stayed at the Grand Hyatt Kauai and booked our anniversary dinner at Tidepools. Prior to our arrival to Kauai, I was super excited about our upcoming anniversary dinner and so I did what every other real foodie would do... I did my homework & researched Yelp browsing all of the photos, reading the Top reviews and looking at the menu to see exactly what I was going to order. Overall, the reviews at Tidepools are top notch and let me tell you, there's good reason for that. After doing my research I will say this... I was a bit conflicted because a lot of the reviews I read were about Tidepool's top rated menu item the Hawaiian Catch and to be honest, it got mixed reviews which made me seriously contemplate whether I would actually order it or not. But I decided to go ahead and give it a chance for myself and... It was the best decision that I made that evening! Let's just say... The Hawaiian Catch was worth every single penny of the $65 bucks that I forked over for it. A soy-ginger glazed Hawaiian fish, with a lobster tail on top, next to a single shrimp, a single scallop over a bed of puréed sweet potato mash drizzled with a lemongrass beurre blanc sauce... The verdict: It was H-E-A-V-E-N-L-Y My wife went with their macadamia nut crusted island fish ($61) and not only was it beautifully plated like a complete work of art, but it was damn tasty too! To start, we each had a cocktail and then a glass of white wine with dinner. I had their Caesar which was topped with anchovies and it was delish. And The complimentary bread rolls were... To. Die. For. O.k.... So we've established that the food was beautifully plated and perfectly cooked, but what about the Ambience, the Service, the View. Everything about this place not only met, but completely exceeding our expectations. Tidepools absolutely made our 10 year anniversary special and so very memorable. So if you are coming to Kauai, specifically the South Shore (Poipu area), whether or not you are a guest at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort.... Wow, did it get even more expensive? I get it, it is SUCH A GREAT PLACE to sit and eat. You are literally in this giant, modernized hut surrounded by a man made pool. The tables are positioned far apart so you can have a nice conversation with your group. But damn, at 60 dollars an entree, you'd expect the taste to be better. The flavors were fine. Palatable but nothing to shout home about. The Macadamia nut crusted ahi was so small, we thought they gave us an appetizer portion. They couldn't even be bothered to either use a smaller plate or fill it in with some vegetables. Yikes! Our server was also pretty M.I.A. during the service even though the restaurant was only about 1/3 filled. Overall it was fine. I remember it being better the last time I was here. The Grand Hyatt lobby is super impressive, but that was the best thing about the dinner experience. I expected much more given how lauded this place is. Service was incredibly slow. It took an hour from when we were seated to place food orders. And normally drink orders are taken immediately. Not so this time. We had to ask to place drink orders and that was 30 min after being seated. Now, if the food was excellent, that would make up for my poor experience thus far. But unfortunately that was not the case. The food was just average and definitely not worth the price. We shared the poke, ribs and scallops for apps. I had the opah (kind of dry and the crab fried rice was too fishy tasting). Ate here for our anniversary last night. I was expecting a lot more. Ambiance is nice. Their cocktail menu leaves a lot to be desired- especially compared to other restaurants on the island. I ordered their Tai Chi , their version of a Mai Tai. I should have known when it mentions Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum as the first ingredient. lol Why not use the spirits made on island or the other Hawaiian islands at least? Honestly, it was drinkable but the worst drink I have had on island. They need to update their menu. Maybe people go and just drink wine because that list is extensive. The food: I am glad we went to check it out but realized we have not been missing out on anything by not eating here sooner. Had the coconut crusted scallops and hamachi sashimi to start. Both were really good. We both ordered the Hawaiian catch as entrees. I was disappointed. It lacked flavor. Swordfish was good but it was no better than what I had at Keoki's Paradise several days earlier. The lobster and scallop just tasted like the grill. Bummer. When done right you can taste the sweetness of both. So, it was lackluster and disappointing. Edible but it could have and should have been better. We were not going to get dessert after that but we thought it is our anniversary and we were enjoying our evening out. We got the coconut cheesecake. Bland. Disappointing. The only coconut we tasted was the flakes as a garnish. The cheesecake had no flavor. All you could taste was how they heated the top to give it a crust. (The technique is escaping me right now) we ate it. Again edible but lacked flavor. Should have gone to Lappert's instead - that would not disappoint. Overall, glad we tried it but will not go back. Was not awful. We have just had better at other restaurants on island. I guess you pay for the atmosphere not the food. Our server was not bad. There was a younger gentleman that waited on tables near us that was nice, friendly, upbeat, and personable with his customers. He explained things on the menu as people sat. Ours did not do that. The two most amazing things about this place from the get-go is the service and the atmosphere. The workers are friendly and knowledgeable. Very attentive and they make sure you're taken care of. This also has got to be one of the most beautifully serene and scenic restaurants. The view is right off the beach and the ponds around the area definitely give it an amazing vibe. Now onto the food. First you're treated to stunning ube bread rolls that are warm and delicious. The appetizers and entrees were good, but not amazing. We ordered the dynamite crab cakes and Hawaiian catch. The crab cakes were good as they were fried well and had a good sauce to complement it. The garnishes changed up the texture of the dish and provided a nice contrast. The Hawaiian Catch consisted of Shutome (Hawaiian swordfish), Scallop, shrimp, and Lobster tail. The scallop and lobster tail were fresh and delicious. The shrimp wasn't too bad either, but there wasn't anything too special about it. The swordfish was only ok for me. Maybe it's because I'm not super crazy about swordfish. For dessert, we had the Macademia but Crème brûlée. That was definitely a delicious dessert as it was sweet, but not overly sweet. Overall, definitely not a bad spot to dine at in Kaui. Located at the Grand Hyatt Kaua'i Resort and Spa, Tidepools is nestled in a romantic setting made perfect for dinner celebrating a special occasion or simply having dinner with your family after a fun day of adventuring the beautiful island. My partner and I got married on the island a few days prior but selected Tidepools for our celebration dinner because it was one of the few "more romantic" restaurants that offered a vegetarian selection. They provided buttered ube roles which were so good! We ordered the tofu pad thai and the crispy tofu and vegetable fritter. Both were very delicious and we both left feeling satisfied with our meal. The pad thai was well cooked and was still good as a left over the next day. The fritter dish was also very palatable, however felt that it could have used a little more zazz/sauce. We of course had some cocktails - my partner the Shipwrck Surfer and I the Lava Flow. The Lava Flow did not taste like it had alcohol in it - but it certainly did so be careful with these! It was a bit too sweet to my liking, but it was still a fun drink to try. Service was friendly and attentive. We were also gifted the Lava cake for dessert. Very rich and lovely blend of flavors. Aside from the vegetarian offerings, Tidepools offers a variety of seafare with a Hawaiian flare. I dont know why it is so negatively reviewed. We visited on a Wednesday evening and we had a great time and experience. Staff was super friendly. Our server was great and gave us detailed recommendations for food and drinks. We arrived on time for our reservation, but we had to wait a few minutes for our table. We werent seated exactly at the spot we requested, but it was a good spot to still view the ocean. For food, we ordered the Shutome and the Big Island Chili Pepper Chicken. Shutome was swordfish atop mashed potatoes and it was soft with a white non-flaky texture. Chili Pepper Chicken was crunchy, however it was poorly breaded and dry. For drinks, my husband had the Shipwreck. He loved it so much, he ordered it twice. As a lover of rum, it tasted well with the amaretto. Was light. For dessert, we ordered the Malasadas. They were fluffy and sugary. Came with guava, pineapple, and chocolate sauce. The pineapple sauce was my favorite, the husband's was guava. Overall, we enjoyed dining at Tidepools. After a poor experience at another popular and very expensive restaurant, I was reluctant to go to Tidepools and drop another huge amount of money for poor food. I'm so glad we went!! Worth every penny! Good portions of good food! Yes expensive and at least felt worth it. Love the beautiful string over the koi fish pond. Our server was so amazing and helpful! He made my parent's anniversary special. The lychee Martini was on point! The complimentary bread is so good!! We ate two baskets! We started with the frites- WOW!! The best!! so crisp in outside and soft and creamy inside. The Hawaiian catch is always a go to staple of great seafood. The macadamian nut crusted fish was a huge piece with tempura asparagus and a delish sauce. The crispy tofu was killer- perfectly crispy and topped with fresh veggies and a curry sauce. This is a special restaurant. During our recent visit, we had some of the most amazing food here. The views of the Koi ponds while eating make it very unique. We had reservations for 7:30, but arrived a couple hours early so we could walk around the beautiful property and enjoy the beach views. They were able to seat us about an hour early and that was nice. Myself, wife and daughter started with some drinks and appetizers. Tai Chi's for us grown ups and a virgin Lava Flow for our daughter. Then the Kalbi ribs and Garlic pomme frites. All great. The frites are a big plate of thick cut fries basically but will definitely get you by until entrees. For entrees, I ordered the Hawaiian catch. A lobster tail, scallop, fish and shrimp.. all cooked to perfection. My wife got the ahi like always and it didn't disappoint. Daughter wanted the ribeye which is expensive to me at $79.. being from Arizona but I wasn't going to tell her no and she enjoyed it. I tried a bite.. good but different than our beef here. Overall, we will return on our next visit to Kauai. You can't beat the service and ambience of this one of a kind restaurant. Sorry I didn't get food pics. A beautiful experience for our honeymoon! We are staying at the Hyatt so it was easy to get to the restaurant. The hype is real! The setting amongst the koi ponds is unique and stunning. The food is also incredible. I got the Hawaiian catch (white fish, lobster tail, one shrimp and one scallop over sweet potato mash) and my husband got the prime filet over mashed potatoes. This place was by far one of my favorite experiences in Kaua'i. The ambiance was magnificent. Grand entry, gorgeous landscape with the koi pond and palm trees. Lots of ambiance here, but the food quality falls very short. The food was beautifully plated (see pics attached), but the opah that I had was very dry, as was the grain/rice that it came with. Super dry. My wife ordered the combo of swordfish, lobster tail, shrimp and a scallop. Swordfish was very dry and the lobster missed the mark. Mai Tai cocktails were good. I had the Hawaiian fresh fish, which was swordfish tonight. Comes with a scallop, jumbo shrimp, lobster tail, fish, purple sweet potato, squash, and broccoli. Literally in my top 5 meals of all time. On our last visit to Kauai we came to Tidepools not once, but twice and it hit all the marks every time. We were able to get the private table both times. It's a lot quieter and you get to look at all the koi fish, which I love. Our waiters were great each time, our glasses were never empty and all our food was served together. On our first visit we were celebrating my Aunt and Uncle's anniversary. We had champagne and a cake that they made special for the event. For my drink I had to have the lava flow, I ordered it dairy and alcohol free. You could really taste the pineapple and ripe strawberry. It was super refreshing, yet substantial. The taro bread that they bring out at the beginning of the meal is so good. It's light and soft bread similar to Hawaiian bread but with a purple color and covered in butter and garlic. I ordered the roasted beets with candied lemons as my starter and we also got the hamachi sashimi. My beets were deliciously sweet, earthy and tender. The candied lemons on top gave it a chewy texture and sugary taste. For my entree I had to get the Hawaiian catch, which for that day was a Hawaiian type of swordfish. I'm normally not a fan of swordfish, but I thought I'd give it a try, and why not, it also comes with scallops, shrimp and a lobster tail. Obviously it was absolutely delicious, especially the scallops they were tender and clean tasting. The chocolate anniversary cake that they brought out was beautiful and rich. We had a great celebration dinner. For our second meal here we were at the same private table and the service was just as good, even with a different waiter. This time I got the lava flow again, it was just too good last time to pass up. For my entree though I got a chef special which was salmon with scallops and noodles. It was amazing! The salmon was fatty and tender and the scallops were once again delicious. The noodles soaked up the sauce very well. It was a great salmon dish. For dessert we got the molten chocolate lava cake and the malasadas, which are like beignets. Both desserts were super yummy. The malasadas were covered in sugar and had a variety of dipping sauces. The lava cake came with ice cream and a little cookie tuile. We devoured all of it. I loved every second here, it's such beautiful place with great, fresh food and wonderful service. read more

My favorite meal on Kaua'i was dinner at Tidepools, located at the Grand Hyatt in Poipu. I made advance reservations about 6 weeks prior to to my trip because I'd heard from so many people that it was worth the planning and the drive. I am very happy to say there were right! Following a winding path from the main lobby of the hotel, it is a bit tricky to find the entrance but all the hotel employees were very helpful in steering guests to this hidden treasure. Mobility challenged guests should ask for help and the waiter said they use the service elevator for wheelchairs. The breadbasket was filled with freshly baked rolls (you can watch them being made as you walk towards your seat) that were entirely too tempting to offer to hungry people! Somehow I only ate one (and a half)! We got crab cakes made with crab, kula onions, panko, lomi tomatoes and a garlic parmesan aioli for $27 Poke with wonton chips made with dynamite furikake for $23, that the non poke lover at the table declared the best poke ever :) The most enticing menu item was the Hawaiian catch with soy glazed Hawaiian fish, cold water lobster, shrimp, scallop, molokai sweet potato, served with a lemongrass buerre blanc for $65. It was a huge portion and every bite was delicately and gently cooked to perfection highlighting all the fresh local ingredients. The misoyaki kurobuta pork chop with furikake rice cake, seasonal vegetables, and house made bok choy kimchee for $61 was one of the best pork chops I've ever eaten and I fought to take the bone home so that I could savor it in private;) Getting a reservation at sunset is worth the planning just to get a view of the sunset. read more
