We tried to get reservations to Tidepools last year but we're not able to get in. This year, I made reservations for our anniversary several months in advance. Boy am I glad that I did. This place is amazing from start to finish. We were seated promptly and greeted warmly. After ordering drinks we got the Crab Cakes as an appetizer. They were stunning. My wife got the Hawaiian Catch which has scallops, lobster, freshly caught fish and shrimp. She was very happy with her meal. For myself, I rarely order Pork Chops for a special meal but tonight I just felt like doing something different. The Misoyaki Pork Chops were unbelievable and I came away very happy. For dessert my wife got the Macadamia Crème Brûlée while I got the Malasadas. These were like small donuts with three kinds of dipping sauces. Again, Tidepools knocked it out of the park. Ron, our server was great and helped us take pictures of our celebration dinner. The back drop of the koi pond, lit torches and ocean made for a perfect ambiance. The Hawaiian catch was mix of scallop, shrimp, lobster and fish was excellent seared and large while the macadamia nut fish was super also. Tidepools is the signature restaurant for the grand Hyatt. It's a Vibe. It's a tremendous way to spend a dinner with open air dining above and amongst koi swimming beneath you. A light music permeates the background and you can overhear your neighbor's conversations as they are all here celebrating anniversaries. The service was excellent. Juan made us feel comfortable with the light banter that has been lost in the service industry these days. He was professional, personable and polite. What more could you want. The manager, Luke, was also tremendous and made us feel very welcome. GO BIRDS!!! The food was . . . fine. For the price point one would expect a meal that cannot miss. Unfortunately, between the taro bread, crab cakes, macadamian crusted mahi, and chilli chicken there was not anything that could warrant eating again. The flavors fell flat and the dishes were rather tasteless. The portions were generous, but we did not have the will to "finish". Overall you have to eat here for the view, ambiance and service. We are at the Hyatt and rather captive to restaurants. Second time this week at Tidepools -beautiful setting. Ambiance wonderful but my 80 year old husband is in a wheelchair. First time difficulty recognizing he needed to be able to sit. Manager helped. Second time seating ok but hostess watched me struggle to get chair from table for husband. And watched again while I struggled to get chair out for me. Sets a bad tone for upper tier restaurant Don't bother with Panko crusted scallops. Overcooked. Or with crab cakes. Mealy and tasteless. Tidepools is located on the back end, ocean side of the Grand Hyatt hotel. Not going to lie we did get a little lost. Hotel does have public parking for their guest, pretty huge lot, so remember where you parked because if you're going for dinner, there isn't much light in the parking lot. Or I should say that the lights aren't as bright. My mom flew to Kauai for the weekend of her birthday with her golf friends. So my family and I planned to fly there to surprise her. Her husband planned everything out for us - where they're going, what time dinner was and when to come in. It was great, had our mom in tears! And her friends knew about it too. So it was the best surprise ever. So when you enter the lobby, you will need to go down a level, that leads to a bar, and down another level that takes you to the ground level. You will then follow a walkway that leads you to Tidepools. You will know you're almost there when you see the sign. There are steps that go down to the restaurant. The restaurant is built over a pond that have live fishes swimming. So the ambience of the restaurant was amazing. Where our party was seated was deeper in and next to the waterfall, and with a view of the sunset. It was perfect. Their taro rolls!!!!! GUYS! This is no joke! They are so B O M B! They are baked, grilled, buttered and salted! And best when fresh out the kitchen. It was good that we ate at least 3 baskets full. Our server knew we flew in from Oahu so she was amazing and gave us a box to take back to our hotel. Bless your heart! What we ordered: - Hawaiian Catch - Opah - Prime New York Strip - Molten Chocolate Lava Cake - Macadamia Nut Creme Brulee Everything tasted great. The Molten Chocolate Lava Cake was over baked. We tried out Tidepools on 9/11/2023 as a recommendation from an friend and it did not disappoint. Our waiter Kylen was the absolute best waiter I have had. Kylen took time out to explain the menu in depth, had the bartender make a drink that they were not familiar with and never let us get behind on drinks or bread. He made our experience a 5 star one for sure and that's not even mentioning the food-which in itself was 5 stars. The experience was so good we went back the next night and to our delight we got Kylen again and he made it a 10 star night. Tidepools did not meet my expectations. This restaurant was highly recommended by many but the food was mediocre at best and the service was not great. I initially tried to get online reservations but was unable to because it was booked out for months in advance. One would think that this meant this place was delicious . We ended up showing up one night to test our luck and by chance we were seated immediately and there was plenty of space in the restaurant. We ordered the crab cakes for an appetizer and the macadamia crusted Mahi Mahi . The fish was covered in a banana macadamia sauce , with molokai sweet potato mash and papaya-avocado relish. This dish had too much flavors that in my opinion clash with one another. It wasn't good at all. Could not finish it. The gentleman who bright over our water and bread was extremely creepy and off . Our main server was not attentive and too busy to check in on us . The only nice thing about this place is the view and open outdoor dining feel that was created with all the large windows. read more

We were pleasantly surprised and will definitely dine here again. Our server was very friendly, attentive, and gave us great suggestions. The other wait staff that came by our table were also very attentive and friendly. We were very pleased with the service here. For appetizers we ordered the hamachi sashimi and the local style grilled kalbi ribs and both were the perfect start to our entrees. For dinner we had the Opah which was served with volcano candy spice, jumbo lump crab meat, herb potatoes, and a papaya-habanero reduction hollandaise sauce and the macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi which was served with a roasted banana-macadamia nut sauce, forbidden rice, and a papaya-avocado relish. Tidepools is one that will always be on our list of must go to restaurants whenever we are in Kauai. The food is DELICIOUS! It is located in the Hyatt restaurant in Poipu which is a glorious setting, full of beautiful flowers, joy fish pond and lovely tiki torches glowing all around-they really set the Hawaii mood for an amazing dinner. It is a nice restaurant so expect to pay higher prices but in my opinion it was worth it. Really nice restaurants. Most tables (for 2-4 table) are located right next to open window to the koi fish pond. Service is great, they know hospitality well, just like all other Hyatt properties. Food is pretty good in my opinion. We ordered Spanish octopus as appetizer and the fresh catch. The octopus is so good, not sure how I feel about the charred pepper that came with it though. The fresh catch has scallop (the best in my opinion), a giant shrimp (pretty good), Mahi mahi (pretty good fish, needs some flavor), lobster (don't like it, has some unpleasant after taste), purple sweet potato (good) and broccolini (good but has too much garlic on it for me, if you like garlic, then go for it). They can split a plate for you but will charge a $15 fee, or they will bring the whole plate to you. We did the latter, and they gave us two extra places, again, nice hospitalities. Starting out by noting you need to MAKE A RESERVATION A MONTH IN ADVANCE. They do have first come first serve bar seating, however. Okay, with that being said, Tidepools is a high end restaurant at the Grand Hyatt in Kauai by the pools and ocean. It is open and airy and it is surrounded by a steam with quite a few koi fish. When I checked reservations, they were booked a month out, but fortunately for me (not so much for others), there was a big rain storm and many people cancelled their reservations day-of, so I was able to get in. We had a lovely waiter, Juan. He provided excellent service, and the food was delicious. The evening began with complimentary bread (which they will bring endlessly, if you would like). It followed with delicious scallops, seafood entrees, and a creme brûlée dessert. Highly recommend! read more

Beautiful view during sunset (couldn't see it) and even more beautiful after the sunset with the tiki torches and lights. This place alone has amazing views for days and stunning architecture! It was a bit hard to find for us since we walked there from our housing but there are signs everywhere. There was confusion at at the front about our reservation since we booked through Opentable. I was sent a separate text with the wrong date (I didn't even catch it my friend did), but it was all a easy fix. Drinks were amazing! If you like sugar then the Lava Flow is for you, the Tai Chi was decent and the Zinfandel wine was surprisingly good. Our waitress Marta was just fantastic. Some things felt like they were taking longer such as my friends second drink and our GF bread. BUT LET ME RAVE ABOUT THE FREE PURPLE BREAD. Absolutely amazing, our group devoured two baskets because it was so good. It could've been taro since it was purple but it had beautiful char marks. As for the food, the special was a surf and turf special which included 14 oz ribeye (bone out), one shrimp, one scallop, and rice. The one issue we had with this dish was that all four surf and turf's we ordered were cooked at different doneness. We all ordered medium rare's and ended up with one pretty rare, two medium well and one well... so the consistency isn't there but it still tasted great! The one shrimp and scallop were delicious. That plate alone was $60 and I personally thought it was worth it since the steak was so large. Hawaiian catch was decent, I really loved the taro they included in the dish. The Macadamian Nut crusted Mahi Mahi was okay... probably wouldn't get again. For appetizers we got the scallops and kabli ribs. Both were really good, but if you're in a big party that's going to be hard to split for sure. Since we were celebrating two birthday the manager came over and brought out two amazing desserts which were the pineapple upside down cake and the donuts. If you like sweets the pineapple upside down cake is for you. The donuts were less sweet and the lemon sauce it came with was super good. The Shutome was tender and the crust had amazing flavor. Outside of the food and view, the service truly made the night for us. We were fortunate to have Les as our waiter and he by far represents the Hawaiian culture and aloha spirit. He was thoughtful and attentive throughout the night and made our young kids extremely comfortable, welcomed and happy. I've read a lot of other positive reviews about Les on Yelp, but his hospitality and caring service is truly hard to capture in words but much better experienced. This review is actually for the Tidepools lounge, not the restaurant area itself. My wife and I walked over from the condo we were staying at to enjoy an afternoon cocktail and perhaps a bite to eat as well. Due to several Poipu restaurants not surviving the COVID shutdown it seemed like most of the remaining ones were booked weeks in advance. As it turned out you can enjoy the full dinner menu from the restaurant in the lounge, which is what we proceeded to do. Perhaps not the relaxing atmosphere of the restaurant but our steaks (filet and New York) were cooked a perfect medium rare as ordered and were excellent. We had a polenta crusted scallop dish as an appetizer that we thought was kinda meh. One minor suggestion I would like would be for a cooling sleeve for bottles of wine. Average room temperature in Kauai is a little higher than ideal for red wine so we asked for one but unfortunately was not possible. Our waiter offered an ice bucket but that would make it too cold, just a minor thing obviously. read more

But this isn't the type of restaurant where just go for the ambience. The food is out of this world. Definitely go here over Dukes! Our server was so nice and accommodating of my sisters gluten free dietary constraints. Deep dive on the dishes: Macadamia nut crusted Mahi mahi - the flavors in the rice were exceptional and fruity tasting. All the flavors paired well rice, candied macadamia nuts, fish, taro chip and squash. The squash really added a contrasting flavor to the dish, so I wish there was a bit more of it. Our server was so nice but failed to mention they were out of mahi mahi so we got ono instead. Ono is heavy and not as flaky as mahi mahi even though most people claim they taste similar. Overall this dish was fun and unique. Opah - I'd never had opah before but the texture is very similar to mahi mahi. It was so flaky and moist! The hollandaise sauce had enough of a papaya taste to it that it felt light. The jumbo lump crab meat paired really well with the opah. This dish was classy and I just felt rich eating it! Our waiter said this is his favorite dish and I understand why. Molten chocolate lava cake - the lava cake flavor was amazing but wasn't super moist. The lapperts strawberry ice cream was amazing and paired well with the raspberry syrup. Usually not a fan of strawberry ice cream but all the flavors in the dish are so fresh and sweet. I'd rate this second to the malasadas. Malasadas - Wow! Malasadas are superior to donuts! The passion fruit mango dipping sauce was so good that I wish I could have bought a bottle to use later. The dark chocolate sauce was exceptional too. I'd recommend eating them together. The Carmel rum sauce was fine. This was my favorite dessert hands down. read more

The restaurant was a cool design but was a little hot due to the direction of the sun during the afternoon and no HVAC (which isn't uncommon considering location) Our food choices were scrumptious, both of us ordered the shutome.
