Took my car in because it wouldn't start after not being turned on for 5 months while I was away in Army BCT. They called me back the next day, told me I needed a new engine, and gave me an estimate around $6,500. I went in and asked if my engine could be repaired and was told no. I was charged a $100 diagnostic fee and took my car to Auto Clinique to get a second opinion. Once they got to my car, it took less than an hour to not only diagnosis but repair it and have it running again, all for $150. Saved me over $6,000! Update: I was able to obtain a refund for the diagnostic fee and they seemed willing to learn and improve. read more

Total misdiagnosis, but with reconciliation. My Ford Transit 350 had a grinding and clunking noise when brakes were applied. Tidwell charged a $100 diagnostic fee and provided an estimate for a brake job of nearly $900. I sought another estimate from Brakes Plus where they found a bolt was missing on one of the calipers creating the noise. Brakes Plus provided the remedy at no charge. I informed Lindsey & manager that their mechanic is not quite thorough in the diagnostic and it's not good for business long-term. I was told, "We stand by our decision." As a business owner myself, I was trying to help them. So be it. They can hold fast and ride this to the bottom. BTW, this is the second time. They told me that I needed a new engine and the remedy was a new oil pump. Troy, the shop owner, apologized for the mistake and offered to refund the Diagnostic Fee. I've been out of the "armchair critic" business for a while now, but I have to come briefly out of retirement to share my experience with Tidwell. Look at my Yelp! handle: Bronxman235. If the word "Bronx" is in there, you know I'm pretty immune to getting service with a scowl. But when my wife and I walked in the door the other day looking to diagnose a "valve-y" noise my VW Jetta's engine was making, the lady with the long fake eyelashes greeted us like she wanted to stab us both in our faces. I was ready to drive off right then and there, but my wife - kind, understanding soul that she is - figured maybe something else was going on that had nothing to do with us. So reluctantly, I handed over the key, and we walked down the road to a coffee place to wait for their call. We'd thought that since we'd agreed on a time for us to show up they'd be getting right on it, but after almost two hours, we ran out of patience and walked back over. When we asked for an update, Scowling Eyelash Lady informed us that they still didn't know what the problem was, but thought it *might* be the timing chain, and we could find out whether it was or not for $948.00. That was it for me. I got my key back, handed them the $50.00 they demanded for wasting our time and playing us for fools, and walked out of there with an estimate for over two grand in the event that the the problem *was* in fact the timing chain. Before we could get in the car, a guy followed us out to the parking lot to explain with all solemnity why it was necessary to hit us up for nearly a grand to simply follow a hunch. This morning, I went over to a shop that specializes in European cars. We walked back out front, lifted the hood, started the car, and in under 10 seconds the guy there figured out that the PCV valve was worn out and the seal had broken. That's it, a valve issue, my own hunch from the moment I first heard the noise. I'm not thrilled that it's going to cost me a bit over $500.00 to fix that, but compared to the more than $2,000.00 these people wanted to fleece me for, I'll take it. Caveat emptor, babies. Used them for 25 years. My whole family did. We also told people to use them. Now all we do is apologizes and tell those people they screwed us over too. My first truck ever I took very good care of it. I had to get a new transmission in 2016 I think, maybe 2017 but i did it and by 2018 I was being told I had to get another transmission!! But they had no record of me getting a new transmission because we paid in cash like we always do to get the discount!! Don't ever pay in cash!! They loose all records and just fuck you in the ass. I had to say good bye to my truck after 9 years of having it. Then they sent me a email telling be that I had to remove my "dead truck" from their property after only FOUR DAYS. 25 years of service with more than 5 cars and they still didn't care enough to help us. will preface this rant stating "I WOULD NOT/did not return to Tidwell Auto to allow them to do further repair" due to the complete loss of trust that Tidwell Auto could perform the work correctly. Disregarded request for an oil change using standard oil and supplied synthetic oil...more money. I complained and paid only for standard oil. Replaced two camshaft sensors that they said needed replaced to the the tune of $486.34 (labor $200.00, parts $286.33) Sensors failed after 48 hours, less than 20 miles driving time AND in the middle of 6 o'clock traffic on Parker Road. Went to another auto shop where both camshaft sensors were once again replaced, paid another $277.05 (labor $126, parts $151.05) and have had no further issues. Bottom line...think twice about Tidwell Auto and always get a second opinion. and then from Tidwell Manager...see below I am going to ask that you remove the review that you placed on yelp as I have written records from you that do not match what you have posted. If it is not removed immediatly we will post all correspondence from you from you that you sent to us and to the bank. Neither of which match the statements posted on YELP. I had to get to work and told them to get it ready for pick up. As I was walking there they called end said they had found the problem and it was ready. All the reviews saying the old man is a rude mess are absolutely correct. I just got out of that horrid place. I took my car in because my brakes were acting weird and I don't know a thing about cars. The woman at the counter (Laura or Lauren) said that the brake pads and rotors needed to be replaced, I got new ones not too terribly long ago so I thought it was strange but I figured maybe they wore out quickly. I left my car and went home. I hadn't heard from them near closing time so I called back and was told that they had found a cut brake line. That sounded more like the legit issue. I was so relieved because fixing the brake line would be less expensive than replacing brake pads and rotors. When I got there to pick up my car, I found that they had done both. Now, I didn't have an issue paying for both since it was already done, but I wanted to ask a couple questions. Like How long will these last? How do I know when they're wore out, because I couldn't tell with theses? Is there anything I can do to make them last longer? You know, questions that anyone who knows nothing about cars would ask. Well, the woman wasn't there, the old man was. As soon as I mentioned that I had recently gotten the ok on pads, he threw a fit. He said I was calling him a liar and that I needed to wait for Lauren because he wouldn't deal with me. He slammed the back door and left me just standing there. My SO was waiting for me (he had driven me there) and was absolutely outraged at how that old man had just spoken to me. He knocked on the back door and said to let me just pay and go since we were on our lunch break. He started shouting from the back saying he wasn't going to give my car back or let me pay!! Threatening to keep my keys! My SO was freaking out because we needed to go back to work. He was going to be late for a really important meeting. Well we end up waiting for 20 minutes outside and then calling the police. I needed my car! Laura finally got back while the cops were on the way. She was trying to mediate the situation. She was way more professional than the fool in the back. She answered all my questions and right as I was getting ready to pay (for all the charges) the idiot from earlier comes out of the back and screams "Cash only!" At this point I was ready to cry because I only had a debit card and I asked earlier if they would take it and they said yes! I plead "I don't have cash!" He points at me and screams in my face "CASH ONLY!!" I am not exaggerating when I say he SCREAMED. Unprofessional and unnecessary. The woman wrangled up the effing animal, apologized, and took my card. We ran out of there so fast!! Will never go back. I hope that poor woman finds a better shop to work for because she was knowledgable and helpful but whoever that mechanic is (I've heard rumors that he's the owner!) needs to learn how to treat paying customers that have questions. Awful. I'm still shaking from being screamed at. My SO was about to break something. TLDR: Stay away unless you want to be screamed at and threatened to the point of police involvement. read more

This guy is a scam. I had never been to Tidwell's but heard they would be cheaper than Firestone. Before picking up my car I purchased a "Yelp Deal" advertised by the company stating I would receive $125 worth of service for $95. I figured something was better than nothing. Boy, was i wrong. He claimed he had never seen the deal in his life. And that somebody was scamming me. I called Yelp and they said that he, the owner was the one who set it up. He wouldn't honor the deal, and could care less that i already paid the $95. I had to pay again.. Luckily Yelp refunded my money. And good luck EVER getting a hold of anyone. I called 7 different times over the course of 3 days and never got an answer or a call back. I eventually had to drive up there to find no one sitting at the front or answering calls. I was hoping to find a mechanic i could trust, would complete good service for a fair price. Unfortunately I found a huge headache with someone who could care less about the customer experience. I told him I would leave a review on help and he said he didn't care and that he hated Yelp because he couldn't moderate the reviews. I've been a customer for many, many years. All good until now. I recently took my high mileage TB in for front end work and a check engine light. Bottom line is they charged over $150.00 to correct the check engine light in addition to $900.00 front end work.. They said the check engine light was caused by a bad sensor. Same one they replaced 4 times over 2 1/2 years. I requested that they look into the problem as I really did not want to put money into the vehicle if there was something else going on. They called, said all was good. I picked it up. I noticed the steering wheel was not straight and called immediately saying I would be bringing back on Monday as it was late. Wife drove it 4 miles to work the next day and the check engine light comes back on.. I took it back in and surprise, now I need a new engine. It now knocks which it never did before. No refund for the check engine light repair. They claim it was low on oil when I brought it in the 1st time. Imagine that!! It sounded and ran Ok when I 1st picked it up and brought it back to them. Tried many times to discuss the issue with the owner Troy who I've done business with for years. He now hides behind a rude person named Amanda. Troy never returned my calls. Last time I called, Troy happened to answer. Claimed he sent me an e mail and refused to discuss the issue, handing the phone to rude Amanda while I was talking. So much for being a loyal customer for years So much for being treated with respect by the owner. The owner wouldn't even discuss the possibility of a refund for the $150.00 for the sensor. BTW I never received an e mail... If you are looking for honesty and respect and an owner who cares about his customers, I would go somewhere else. read more

I was the middle car in a 3 car pile up on 35 headed to Dallas for Christmas. The car was drive able for the remaining half of the trip, but I was concerned about internal damage causing issues on the drive back to Austin. My boyfriend HAD to leave early Christmas Day to be back for work. I took my car in to Tidwell for a quick check up 2 days before Christmas, hoping they could help me out in a really short amount of time but worried that they would be too busy so close to the holiday and on such short notice. They squeezed me in and told me I needed a new radiator and wheel bearings. Since I'm still dealing with insurance stuff and we are short on time, I told them to just do the radiator so we could just get it back home for the remaining engine and cosmetic repairs. They ordered the part and installed it on Christmas Eve, just in time! Lauren was great at keeping me informed. I am incredibly grateful for the quick repairs and service, especially considering how busy they were and that it was on Christmas Eve! They did great work on my car, both times. Not 4 stars only because when they replaced the window seal, they took my duct tape off the window (naturally). Problem was, they did not clean the sticky off the window and that rubbed on the seal. When I figured out what was happening, I cleaned it but it had rubbed & caught on the seal enough to loosen it, so wind blows in it again and I'm back to square one, minus $500. I wish they had thought of that. I didn't know it would happen but I'm not the professional. Also, they fix my frozen caliper but somewhere it was loose & I lost a lot of brake fluid. They happily fixed that for free. (I never called about the window as I am unsure where "fault" lies therein.) read more

Previous visits went smooth and I was happy with they work and the service but today was a complete turn around. Had a 10 am appointment, at 11 am they still had not taken the car to into the bay for work and had not bothered to say anything to me about the delay. Only when I asked for the keys back was I apologized to and told the car in front of me requested extra work and took longer than planned. OK how about either 1) telling me that instead of leaving me sitting in the waiting room for an hour wondering what's going on. 2) telling the customer that requested the extra work that their was no time in today's schedule and set them up with a future appointment. 3) if you knew prior to my appointment call me before I get there so I'm not wasting my time in your waiting room. Falsely Diagnosed and Inspected my 1993 Honda Accord. Basically made me lose trust and interest in all shops around the area after this experience. Never have I been told in a shop that my issues would get better over time naturally and that the car was just old and gonna fall apart... Took it home did thorough diagnosing out of my own time that I really didn't have much of to sacrafice and lose working on the car or even having a car to use, to my much expectance seeing a number of issues they missed that I've spent the last month fixing personally myself. If you have any older cars DONT TAKE THEM HERE!!!!!! all they'll do is lie straight to your face. Id be surprised if there were any other pre OBD - II vehicles in there due to the sheer fact that it doesnt seem like this place can diagnose anything unless its shown straight in their face with a computer/ OBD 2 SCANNER... I have been a customer for over 15 years. They even have admitted to hiring a thief for the year 2017. During that year I took one of our cars there over and over. Was of course charged every time. They kept saying this should fix it. Well it was never fixed. After 6 months I insisted that one certain person work on my car. It was fixed within 2 or 3 hours. However, all 4 of the new Michelin tires were by then warn and they said "We should not have driven it while it was not fixed". REALLY At this shop if you pay in cash you get 5% off so on really expensive repairs I like to pay in cash. Which I did on a Transmission repair. They said I did not pay for this fix but all three of us in our family know that we did. We could not find the receipt that we always keep in the car. This place is fantastic and everybody is always so nice and so friendly! Definitely a great place to take your care if you're a single female and don't want to be taken advantage of. They always taken care of me and my car, which is a temperamental Prius hybrid. I was there today because the car was giving me a warning message, but wouldn't tell me what was wrong. Tidwell's ran their diagnostics tests and didn't charge me for running them (but I would guess that dealership would have charged $$$). They've squeezed me in at times when I needed it. I have always waited and the service is always prompt. My son loves their waiting room :) One time he left/lost a toy there and when they found it several days later (it had fallen behind something), they texted me right away. It was a toy that his late great grandfather had given him and is so very precious to us. I've had exceptional service from the very first time to this last time and I don't doubt it will continue. I love Tidwell. I discovered them 15+ years ago, and I've been using them ever since; they are the nicest people. They're alway insightful, and helpful. They don't charge you anything to look at your car (crazy concept these days, right?!), and they don't ever make me feel like an idiot when I ask questions (I ask a lot of them!). There are so few of the small, independent auto shops left these days, and I am so grateful that they are still around. Any time a friend asks me if they know of a local shop, I refer them to Tidwell. You need three really honest professionals in your life: a doctor, a lawyer, and a mechanic. Tidwell did a great job at a great price, in one day on the schedule we agreed to ... replacing the window regulator/motor on my Chevy Suburban. No problem ... as usual. Tidwell has done all types of work for me: brake jobs, computer work, AC work, electrical work, replaced a differential ... worked on SUVs, convertibles, older and newer cars, installed trailer hitches, done all sorts of repairs and of course oil changes ... these jobs come to mind as I write my review today. Tidwell has gone out of their way to satisfy special requests I've had from time to time. I don't live far away, and they pick me up and drop me off from my home when needed. I have used Tidwell Auto Service for many years. I have always found Troy Tidwell to be an honest man. His mechanic Mario is an honest man. They know what they are doing and they do good work. I cannot recall all of the cars I have taken to them, and the jobs they have done for me, but they always satisfy me with good work at a good price. Because I have a long, good and trusting history with Tidwell Auto Service, it was painful and surprising to read some negative when I logged into YELP. I recommend you give Tidwell a chance to earn your business. From my experience, they deserve it. They certainly have earned my business.
