My family came for dinner on a Saturday around 5:30 p.m. It wasn't crowded yet and we were seated immediately. There are no carts being pushed around here. Instead, you are given a paper menu to mark up what you would like to order. This ensures that your food is freshly steamed. We ordered the typical ha gow and siu mai. They were pretty big and juicy. My kids loved the sesame ball with the salted eggy yolk/lava filling. The baked Overall, the food was good and tasted fresh. The ha gow and siu mai were big and juicy. My kids loved the sesame ball with the salted egg yolk/lava filling. Tim Ho Wan is known for their bake cha siu bao and it did not disappoint. The bread to cha siu ratio was perfect. Usually, there is too much bao and too little filling but that's not the case here. The restaurant is located in the Royal Hawaiian Center on the 3rd floor. This place was a recommendation from a childhood friend so we have known this person for DECADES. Our hostess seated us very quickly and we were greeted by one of the servers promptly there after. The food came out to our table hot and everything on our table had a lot of flavor. HOWEVER - my wife was not impressed by the "Won Ton Soup" she said it was very "fishy" what ever that means. If you're staying in Waikiki with no car and have a craving for dim sum, then this place will certainly suit your needs. While it meets all the standards of a good dim sum place, it's not necessarily any better than other local favorites. I do like the snow-capped char siu bao, a light sugary flakey covering on the bao that's offered in maybe only 2 other places in Honolulu. However, these and pretty much all the other dishes are smaller than elsewhere but at Waikiki prices. I do enjoy their selection of teas especially their oolong tea. Pictured are their shrimp dumplings, which are decent (dainty also comes to mind) and noodles (I included a tea cup for size reference - this may be "family style", but more for a family of one?) The taste of their food is not my favorite among the chinese resto that serves dim sum..i like the serving size, not a lot of leftover. We eat at SM Baguio Tim Ho Wan out of curiosity, and my son wants to try their noodle dishes. My son got rashes on his face swollen lips and ended up throwing up, luckily he did not experience difficulty breathing. He has nuts and seafood allergies. We came from the bookstore and ace hardware before we eat lunch. We don't blame anyone but ourselves, we're not careful enough to choose a place at that time. I do want to give this place the benefit of the doubt. We initially saw this restaurant when the windows were still covered and was excited. Considering it was Waikiki and the weekend, we called to make reservations, and were told that they don't take reservations (fair enough.) Luckily we got their early as the place was not that crowded (but started to fill up, as soon as we were seated.) Location is small and the air conditioner is up high, so food does get cold fast. The serving size is a little smaller than most dim sum restaurants. My grandmother use to tell us about receiving things in fours and how it meant death, so I was a little apprehensive about orders having four things on a plate, but that's just me. Food was okay. Enjoyed the steamed rice with the chicken, the bbq buns and the noodles. The spareribs wasn't bad, just not something I would order again. The table next to us had the short ribs, I think we will try that, the next time. Will we be back again? Definitely, customer service is ok, they are friendly. Came here during a one week trip to Honolulu. I had eaten at both locations in New York City, and found this to be one of the most delicious dim sum restaurants I've ever had outside of Asia. One of the things that I really enjoy is how the siu mai is truly unique. It really does taste like they make it fresh every day. There's also something about the seasoning that they use, where it doesn't taste processed. There are a lot of dim sum restaurants that actually source the dim sum, frozen and large packages, and then they just re-steam or heat up the day that it is being served. Since I was eating by myself, I didn't have too much room to order a lot of things. This is probably one of the most unfortunate things about eating solo at a dim sum restaurant. Things that I ate: Chicken feet: served with peanuts. PROS: - Good amount for sharing, just a little bit too much for one person unless you absolutely love chicken feel like I do. - I'm not quite sure how they make it, but everything was fall off the bone. - Also, I don't think that this was fried. The skin was still fairly stretched, hot over the cartilage and the bones. A lot of other places will still be falling off the bone, but you can see that the skin is wrinkly almost as if it's been fried in oil first before being braised. - ironically, the peanuts were still slightly crunchy, and not mushy as if it's been over cooked or braised too long. This is definitely one of my favorite dishes to get each time I come to Tim Ho Won. CONS: - none Stuffed shrimp in eggplant : another one of my go tos PROS: - Super large pieces of shrimp stuffed eggplant. This is not one of the lighter dishes given the amount of each piece. - Nice balance between eggplant, pieces and sauce drizzled on top. All parts cooked through, but not over cooked. This is hard to do when trying to cook the shrimp and then also the eggplant. CONS: - Slightly on the oily end. Both eggplant and shrimp taste need a decent amount of oil to be fried in first. Har gao shrimp dumpling: I have to get this anytime I go to a dim sum restaurant. PROS: - Came out nice and warm, definitely freshly steamed. - Good to share especially if you're ordering more things between multiple people. CONS: - I don't know if I would call this extremely amazing. It was good, and it tasted a little bit more fresh or better tasting than what I've had another standard dim sum restaurants. However, it was still like the basic shrimp dumpling that I would get. I did not get the Siumai like I had in previous times, because I was by myself, and pork tends to fill me up a lot faster than shrimp does. Service was amazing as always. The waiters were very attentive, and came to check in on me multiple times, especially since I had mentioned that I may order one or two more dishes, if I wasn't full off of the three that I had ordered. Even though I went during low peak hours, around 130 to 2 PM Sunday, I still felt a little bit rushed. This was a little bit unfortunate, because I really do like to take my time, especially with dim sum. That was actually one of the major reasons that I went during the off hour (in addition to reduce the risk of Covid, since it peaking). All in all, though, this location was much more chill and way less people than the ones in New York City. So that I don't know if itself was enjoyable. What I come here again? We got the bbq pork buns, spareribs & chicken feet over rice, pan fried chicken dumplings, and the salted egg yolk balls with sesame. Tim Ho Wan is known for their bbq pork buns which is flakey on top so that's a no brainer that you must get it. The spareribs & chicken feet over rice is delicious and i also highly recommend if you eat that stuff. The dumplings were good but not amazing. The salted egg yolk balls were delicious and the egg yolk filling burned me, but that means it came out fresh. Tim Ho Wan is worth the try. Hi-ya! So we had this on our final evening while here in Honolulu. The congi was really tasty, the pork buns sweet, but not too--and they were good, but really everything else was ok. I wish there was more selection or maybe even the feel of where waiters brought ready food in carts to your table to see and select. Their recipe changed a bit or shall I blame it on Covid. We noticed some of the dim sum had MSG. At first I couldn't figure out why I kept going for the iced water. We also noticed the shrimp dumpling, Har Gao made with murky, thick wrap and shrimp almost tasted like fish cake and very pale in color. I think what I really liked about this place was the clear, thin wrap for their dumplings in the past. At their other branches, the chicken feet is soy-sauced flavor (darker in color). The texture is smoother/silkier (more traditional), vs the texture of chicken feet you may get at other more americanized (black bean sauce) dim sum places. Traditionally speaking, THW does THE BEST version of chicken feet across all my travels. I like both but the chicken feet particularly from THW is my absolute favorite. Overall dim sum and other food offerings here are SOLID. They may not be the best you've ever had but considering the central location & satisfaction of cravings, I think it's worth it. dim sum is made to be eaten right away (not in take-out boxes) Service is average Costs: Tim Ho Wan has always been more expensive than your average dim sum restaurant. Even more, this is located in Waikiki. This is actually the most expensive branch of Tim Ho Wan I've been to (followed by New York, than Japan/Hong Kong). We've always wanted to try this place when it opened, but the prices kind of made us hesitate. But after watching so many youtubers saying it's so good, especially the pork buns we just had to try it. The buns were pleasantly sweet and the inside was delicious and moist. My dad said it'll take no time at all...so my mom and I walked around for a little bit. I don't know how long the take out bag was sitting there (at least 10 or 15 minutes) but who ever packaged our meal just left the bag on a shelf and no other worker came out to give it to us! Presentation was poor mediocre but the minute you got it to your nose, you could smell old fish and it was overpowered with garlic. A few items were already sold out for the day (their specialty seafood dishes), but we went with the basics: steamed shrimp dumplings, sticky rice with lotus leaf, steamed pork spare rib with black bean sauce, pan fried turnip cake, deep fried pork and shrimp dumplings, and chicken feet. I really like Tim Ho Wan. It is 5th on my list of DS favorites--the first 4 are local restaurants. The two drawbacks are a limited menu, and it is a chain restaurant (from Hong Kong with locations across the country). Neither of these things detracts from the extremely clean and pleasant atmosphere, and delicious food. I've been to THW several times with 2-5 friends. We usually arrive later-ish, after 1 or 2 pm, or when they first open. Even on the weekend, we've always been seated and ordered promptly. By now I've tried a wide range of menu items, and every dish has been nicely prepared and tastes delicious. I did find the Sweet Osmanthus Jelly with Goji Berries disappointing. Sounds wonderful, doesn't it? Osmanthus tea is delicate. I expected floral notes with a hint of sweetness and a tart bite here or there from the goji berries. Steamed Rice Roll with Minced Beef: I personally always go for this dish at dim sum restaurants. I love the texture of the noodle roll and the meat filling is tasty. Rainbow Mango Slush: realllllllly sweet. The cream on the top is a nice touch but man this drink is pure sugar -- maybe it's just me but I would have preferred some tang and less sugar. It's an adventure to have a Dim sum luncheon in Waikiki, quite a different setting in the heart of the tourist district at the Royal Hawaiian Center. Seating could be either outdoor or indoor in the restaurant. Very different from other dim sum places. They don't serve complementary hot tea on the table but by individual orders only, be aware of this. The concept of of this restaurant is to upkeep it's Michilin quality and standard as their other international restaurants. Menu of photographic food items are available on table, very self explanatory and easy to follow. All dishes are made to order, and in certain areas of the restaurant customers can even see the kitchen staff doing dim sum preparation. Service was prompt and efficient and the dishes arrived in good timing. I was deeply impressed with the pan fried rice roll with XO sauce, nicely flavored, and not spicy at all. The stuffed Eggplant with shrimp paste was very good too, clean and not greasy, the classics of Siu-mai was seasoned well, but the Har-gau wrapper was rather mooshy, Beef meat ball was fresh, good texture and delicious. Some dishes such as chicken feet, turnip cake and chive dumpling are among good quality. The Sticky rice and their signature baked BBQ pork bun was rather sweet which I didn't really care for. There were some other dim sum items too which are quite unusual compared to other competitors in same business. Got a few standards to-go including the baked BBQ pork buns, shrimp and chives dumplings, shrimp crepes, congee, eggplant and shrimp. Quality even for take-out was still solid. You can especially tell with the dumplings and crepes as the skin is delicate, but doesn't tear and doesn't have a rubbery texture when you eat it. The BBQ pork buns are on the sweeter side and I personally prefer the steamed version. The eggplant and shrimp and congee were also great. We felt like we needed to be a bit healthy and ordered the blanched lettuce, which was a mistake. I was surprised that it literally is just that...blanched lettuce. If you're looking for dim sum in Waikiki, this is the place to go! Located in the Royal Hawaiian Center on the 3rd floor. Their menu is decently sized, but will get you full. We ordered around 10 dishes to share amongst 4 people. Some must order dishes would be: -Baked BBQ buns -Steamed pork spare rib with black bean sauce -Steamed shrimp dumplings -Steamed pork dumplings with shrimp (siu mai) We also ordered their signature Hong Kong Iced milk tea and this was a skip, it tastes like powdered milk tea and not like traditional Hong Kong style milk tea, which was a disappointment since Tim Ho Wan is a Michelin star restaurant in Hong Kong. read more

OK Overall rating is a strong 4 starts IMHO We went for lunch and wanted the first seating because 1) we wanted inside seating (not patio) 2) we did not want to wait in line for long (they do not take reservations) 3) we wanted to continue our journey in Waikiki with little dilly dally We ordered similar dim sum to what we would find in our Chinatown to use it as a line of measure and comparison and as an after thought, it was the best idea for comparison's sake. That said, the food taste was good and in more dishes than not, very tasty deserving of the Michelin credential. We tried the shrimp and chives, pork hash, turnip cake, blanched lettuce and a couple other dishes but these which I have mentioned stood out in the taste test They will validate your parking for the RHC parking garage for up to 2 hours. Best place to park in that structure is level 3; walk out to the center and turn east. You will run into Yim Ho Wan. If you run into Wolfgang's; You've gone too far. Tim Ho Wan makes the best baked BBQ pork buns. The buns always come hot. The outer bun has a slight crispy and the hot BBQ pork filling is full of flavor. They are a dim sum restaurant so they serve dim sum all day. When they first opened in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, the wait time for a table was 90 minutes. With the pandemic, business has been slower and they have offered kamaaina discounts. I did take out a few times when they gave that kama'aina discount. I recently dined in and they followed protocol by checking vaccine cards with IDs and seating people on every other table and turning the chair(s) sideways. They told us that we both had to sit on the same side of the table and the sideways chairs had to remain empty. We had an 11:30am lunch on a weekday and our dim sum came out in 10-15 minutes. There was no wait time for our table and we selected to sit outside. My favorite items are the congee with pork & pi dan (century egg), baked bbq pork buns, and the lava custard jin dui (sesame balls). As for prices, if you want to leave full, I would estimate $25 per person. They also charge for tea by the pot. For parking, your first hour is free with validation. You can show the staff your parking ticket and they will give you a validation sticker.
