I came, I saw, I got a hole waxed in the center of my eyebrow. Please bear in mind that I have very thick brows and am still using a pencil weeks after the aforementioned incident. The plus side: I didn't have to pay for my wax. The deal breaker: their wax made me break out for another week. Been seeing Cindy for many many years for waxing services. (I've followed her through the different salons she's worked at)When she started working at tip top nails I started getting occasional pedicures too. I don't usually like getting pedicures but I trust the whole staff here for their great, meticulous and patient service. But Cindy, I love her, she is great to talk to, she brightens up my day each time I see her and well she's like family to me. (An auntie who's always there to listen and who really cares). I can't believe I haven't written a review for these caring ladies! Great value and the ladies take their time and do such a great job on mani pedi. Sometimes there's a short wait for walk ins but I don't mind at all. This is establishment is no-nonsense, fast and efficient and the end product is always good. I particularly enjoy going to Lin for eyebrow definition and tinting. She has impeccable shaping technique and I look like a million dollars for just $20 every time I go in. I travel for a living and have NEVER been able to get such a wonderful brow shape and tint anywhere else - even New York and London. I was excited to try this place because of the reviews on Yelp. But I had a bad experience. Now I have to admit that I don't get my nails done often (expense and other reasons), but once in awhile I do splurge, and since the new gelish nails have come out my French manicure lasts a lifetime. I attended the salon just this afternoon around 3pm. And I needed to have my previous gel nail removed. Now I remind you that I have had only two applications of this gel nails. I noticed right away that the lady did not opt to put my hand in the solution like I had done in previous times. In fact she was pealing off the edges which would actually tear a little of my real nail away. (Just a tiny bit) but this action does weaken my nails, which is why I wanted to have a professional remove it withe the special solution. Then when it is time to take the white tips of the gel polish off, she pulls out the electric grinding machine. I think, "well this is unusual, does she think I have fake nails?" She proceeds to turn it on and start grinding my pinky with the white polish. And the thing slips from her hand tearing my nail and nipping my skin. All I can say is "painful". And I am not pleased. I was very upset. Instead of her doing the correct process, she was being lazy and trying to do it fast. I am not going back to Tip Top Nails. It was my fault that I should have said something. And to make matters worse I let her try to fix the problem by continuing to do this process. My fault. But never again. I am only giving 2 stars because the woman who did my pedicure was fabulous. read more

HORRIBLE! I made a reservation an hour and 15 minutes before closing. When I arrived, 4 staff members were working and there was 1 manager. Yet after waiting for an hour, there was still no one available. At this point my pedicure water was cold, and no one addressed -especially the manager- that I was still waiting. Finally right before closing, they offered to "quickly" give me a pedicure, which I declined. I had the worst Brazilian wax of my life at tip top nails. It was an overall horrible experience. Id like to preface this review with 1) Sorry this review is so long 2) I have been getting Brazilian waxes for 8 years an 3) I am not someone who normally complains or puts up a fit when it comes to bad service. This experience changed that. I wasnt crazy about their waxing set up. It was two teeny tiny rooms that dont connect to the ceiling so you can hear people getting their nails done and they can hear you. I also prefer when they dont open a door thats open to the public when you have your pants off but again, I kind of just go with the flow so it didnt bother me much. The woman seemed to be in a rush. She was using VERY hot wax that was burning my skin and then continuing to wax that area. My skin was in so much pain from the burning hot wax but the worst part was the heat of the wax was keeping it from hardening and therefore not completely pulling up all of the hair. This required her to do it over and over again. I asked her to try a different area or wait till it cooled down because she was the one who told me it was too hot. BUT then continued to use the wax. I almost got up half way through but having a half waxed vag would be really weird. So continues on this review... The horrible Brazilian wax finally ended and I was in shock. I am a little bit of a baby when it comes to pain, but I had never experienced a wax job like this. She basically threw some liquid on my crotch region and told me to wipe myself down. I did, put on my clothes, paid and went home. When i got home I looked at the area and it looked like I had a burn. Also there was still wax everywhere. I do not know how this woman even got wax on my legs, AND ARMS. But it was seriously everywhere. So I then had to go shower and wash my burning hot skin with soap and water so the wax would come off and it just kept burning. And what finally pushed me over the edge was that she didnt even get all of the hair. Oh and somehow I was charged $35 when the reviews said $20. So I called in to complain. Lynn, the manager who wasnt there the night before, told me the bank said they "can't give refund via credit card machine" which was a total lie, but I went in as she asked. Lynn didn't apologize once. She blamed it on me, told me it was my first time getting a wax and that everything was normal. It was actually quite insulting because I really wasnt trying to be difficult, I just honestly couldnt believe how horrible of a waxing job it was. Lynn finally agreed to refund me $15 after about 20 minutes of angry exchanges, but again she just blamed me for having to fire one of her employees (which I of course did not request) and continued blaming the situation on me in various ways. Either way, the situation could have been remedied by good customer service but Lynn was awful and insulting and made the entire situation worse. I would not go back here and I would not recommend their waxing service or trying to get help from Lynn. I hope no one has to experience anything like I did at Tip Top Nails. read more

Don't come here for Brazilian/bikini waxing. Just don't. It's cheaper than most places but definitely not a great experience. The woman was a nice person but the actual waxing process was the worst that I've ever had. It's been a few days and my lady parts still be irritated from the waxing session. 1) she used the same stick each time from a pot of wax that looked like it was used for everyone. 2) there was only this one big cloth that was used over and over with the removed hairs still on it. 3) this didn't allow for a clean wax so she went over areas again and again. I think this really irritated my skin and I'm so uncomfortable and itchy down there still. 4) the room is ridiculously cramped. My leg was up against the wall and I wasn't able to get in a good position which also led to her going over areas multiple times. 5) there was hair on the table when I got up and she just pulled new sheets of paper over the bed. At least dust off the stray hairs from the bed. The idea that someone else was going to lie on that bed grossed me out. Just don't get your waxing done here. They seem to be okay with nails though. read more

First time I've gotten a pedicure in SF and boy did this place freak me out. I went in with a friend and we asked if we could get new pumice stones (out of fear of contracting nasty nail fungus). We were made to feel like anal clean freaks for asking for such a thing (which I thought was a common nail salon practice, at least in LA). I don't even know why I bothered to ask for a new pumice stone since the employees just brought over buckets of dirty utensils and just rinsed off the foot spas with water (I don't believe I saw one soap sud). Afterwards, my friend and I rushed home and washed off our feet with anti-bacterial soap and put polysporin cream on. Although the price is cheap ($15 for a spa pedicure), it's not worth the fear of fungus it gave us!! read more

This is by far my favorite nail place in the city. It's by no means chic or trendy, but the best value in the city with a cozy, neighborhoody feel and highly attentive staff. Lynn is fantastic! Where they really differentiate themselves is in their mini shoulder/foot massages - one of the best in SF, much better than Lavande for example (which I think is very over-rated). I've been coming here for about 7 years and don't even live near Noe Valley anymore. Recommend checking out if you're in the area. read more

My first choice when it comes to body hair is to not give a shit. In theory, I recognize the ideal of a hairless female body as arbitrary, fairly unrealistic, and a morally neutral option that some women may enjoy, and others may not. Maybe in a couple decades when I'm heading out of my 40's, I will have the confidence women that age seem to grow into, and I'll let the soft breezes of San Francisco gently tickle my flowing leg-locks. In the meantime, I squirm under the thumb of patriarchy... and under the gaze of the lady at Tip-Top Nails as she watches me take off my pants for a half-leg waxing. I'm actually new to this waxing thing. Removing hair used to be a private activity, the way God intended, until I moved to this city and lost the luxury of an apartment with a bathtub. Refusing to practice balance poses in the shower while holding a razor, I searched yelp for a cheap yet hygienic waxing salon. Tip-Top Nails delivered. Please note that 3 stars is not a bad review. Yelp defines it as "A-ok," and that is exactly what Tip-Top is. While the pants-removal and the waxing itself is done behind a closed door, that same door opens toward the rest of the salon. The staff is very considerate in the way they slide it open only as much as they need to slip in and out, but if you need complete assured privacy, this may not be the place for you. It took 10 minutes and cost $15. Their menu said "$13 and up", and I'm still not sure what makes some half-legs more expensive than others. I asked about it, but there was a language gap, and the price I'd have to pay to learn enough Vietnamese to ask again is way more than my clearly very valuable legs go for. So I paid and tipped and was fairly happy. Next time you see this pretty feminist lady walking around the city, compliment her smooth legs, and let her know they'd look just as nice with the hair on, too. read more

If you want a great mani/pedi at a great price, than you should give this place a try. They remodeled about 6 months ago, and upgraded their spa chairs which are so comfortable and relaxing. The customer service is fantastic. They're all professional and super sweet ladies. I always walk-in and never have to wait. Although they're quick, they do an excellent job. I've been here at least 6 times because it's local, and when you need a mani/pedi, you gotta do what you gotta do. However, it really is a completely sub-par nail salon. I never knew that it was possible to do a manicure/pedicure SEPARATELY in a total of half an hour, but alas, it sure is! Annoying. The reason they can do it so fast is that they aren't actually doing all the steps. I always laugh a little when they take the cuticle pusher and just touch each nail. This is my go-to cheap nail place. It's the best bang for your buck on Church. It's not glamorous or pampering, but it's a great deal. A mani-pedi is around $18. The service is efficient and they do a pretty good job. The women that work there, particularly the manager, are all very nice. If you want to walk out with rhinestones on your toe nails, even better. Spa pedi and manicure combo is super cheap ($18) but has results that are comparable to higher priced nail/waxing salons. If your manfriend needs sparkly toes too, bring him along. Any pedi that's strong enough to withstand the abuse that manfeet take on the playa is worth my $. read more

Ugh. The woman helping me completely rushed through my mani-pedi. I visibly winced multiple times as she nicked my toe and then my finger. My cuticles aren't completely clean. There are visible gaps on my fingers and toes where polish didn't make it on. The polish on my nails chipped four days later (with normal wear and tear, it usually lasts me a week). I understand that I came in during the evening post-work rush, but that's no excuse for all the deficiencies I'm seeing. Reasonable neighborhood-type place. Usual kind of no-nonsense mani-pedi work, nothing spectacular but nothing bad at all. Worth a special visit, however, for the eyebrow waxing which is superb (though again, no-nonsense). I had been to a bunch of places and then found Lin who has now been shaping my eyebrows for the last four years. The price is unbeatable and she really does an amazing job and gets my eyebrows just right every single time.
