Anyways, after waiting 45min for my food it was just ok the adobo $20. was a little bland and needed vinegar and garlic....the lumpia was decent, but for $12.00 I was expecting a decent portion, not! I have been sick for a few weeks with a sinus infection, so I needed something comforting and tasty to eat. Tipunan came up as a Yelp suggestion, but I am too sick to drive, so I got delivery from Door Dash. I got beef nilaga, beef kare kare, rice, and ginataan bilo bilo. Everything was packed so well and hot. Beef nilaga has healing powers so I tried that first. My G*d, it was so good!!! See my pictures of it. It's like Mexican sopa de res, but nilaga has fish sauce instead of Mexican spices. Flavorful broth, and green beans, potatoes, carrots and cabbage that were cooked just right. Not too soft, not too firm. Then I tried the beef kare kare. When I opened the container, I gasped! I was like, "Omg, they love me." I was expecting steam-table food packed in a container (which is fine), but Tipunan's food made me feel like my mother made it for me (my mom is a chef and presentation is important! And we're Filipino, btw). See my pictures! Words cannot explain it well enough. The kare kare was HELLA GOOD. The beef was so tender and had a few bits of fat on them for flavor. A few; just right. I love beef fat flavor! Let's talk about rice. Some Filipino restaurants use Calrose rice bc it's cheaper and okay, it'll work, but it's really not the kind of rice you eat with Filipino food. At other restaurants, sometimes the rice is too wet and they serve it anyway. I can tell Tipunan uses a good-quality Jasmine rice. It's a little shiny and it's cooked right! Like an "al dente" rice. And it's mabango (fragrant). I put my nilaga broth on it, then kare kare sauce on the other half and the rice held up nicely. I swear I didn't feel sick anymore. It was like Filipino Jesus worked through the food and healed me!!! Then the ginataan bilo bilo dessert. Look at the picture. It has an ube flavor and beautiful purple hue. It had just right sweetness and it wasn't watery. Everything was soft, but not mushy. Just perfect. Can I tell you something else? I had leftovers for the next day AND EVERYTHING WAS STILL AS GOOD! Their food reheats nicely! Heat the nilaga broth and meat by themselves, then add the veggies. It's better if the veggies are room temp first. The kare kare was fine in the microwave. Them green beans were still "al dente", too. I am so glad I found this restaurant. I wanted good Filipino food and I got better quality and taste than I expected, and I'm Filipino so I know. Their food is really beautiful and tasty. If you love yourself, you should order from Tipunan, like, now--today! **Edit: Price. All Filipino food at restaurants are expensive compared to Chinese food because that's what everyone compares Filipino food to, erroneously, I might add. Filipino food is not Chinese food. No shade; I love Chinese food, but this ain't it. Filipino food takes time to make. All the peeling, and chopping, and mincing, and braising, and everything has to be a specific size so as not to overcook/undercook. Many Filipino dishes require you to cook things separately then bring them together when serving. Everything has to be fresh or you can taste how it's not. I paid $50 for all my food (plus $10 Door Dash tip = $60). I got 3 big meals out of it. 4 if I didn't want to gorge, but yeah, I wanted to gorge! Plus dessert. To help a better understanding of why it was disappointing 1. $13 plus tax for one scoop of lechon is what they call "ala carte" seemed more like a mini plate from onos Hawaiin bbq. 2. One Turon for $2.50 plus tax..... one fried banana lumpia... I wouldn't have purchased it if they advertised how many came with it on their menu..... no one ever just eats one Turon... 3. I could have given this place 5-stars very easily if only me and my dad didn't have to wait for more than an hour, 63 minutes to be exact. I'm not gonna lie. The food is incredibly delicious. My dad had the beef nilaga and the beef is perfectly tender. The vegetables of the soup are soft as if it was perfectly boiled. I had the Adobo-silog which is one of the best adobo that I ever tasted. The fried rice is also flavorful with chili sauce on the side that made my order the perfect delicious order. But what went wrong? Why wait more than an hour when the staff at the customer service only told us that we only had to wait for only 28 minutes? I used to work in a Meditterean place in Daly City and my former boss would be incredibly upset if the customers would have to wait for than an hour. Secondly, there are delicious Filipino restaurants in the Peninsula and the East Bay that are cheaper and as delicious as this restaurant with less waiting. Lastly, I noticed that place seemed "woke". I never noticed any male staff working at the Oakland Food Hall. All the staff I saw who were reaching the food to the customers are women who seems lesbians. I was wondering if they truly have any male staff in kitchen? I'm certainly not against the LGBT community or women. But isn't the essence for progress is for men and women to be working together for greater efficiency? I hate to give this place 1 star. Unfortunately, because it was raved so highly by friends I decided to give this place try via DoorDash. The wait time was long but that's fine because I know I ordered it from DoorDash and I didn't mind the wait. The food was just okay, like nothing to rave about or tell my friends to try. I ordered the Tosilog (Beef). The beef was super bland, I had to dip my meat into my "spiced" vinegar which I paid extra for. Even then the spiced vinegar was meh, it tasted like plain vinegar. Usually when I try spiced vinegars from other Filipino restaurants, it's always their way of making it. Which I like but, this one wasn't good. It didn't enhance the taste of the bland beef. Then the rice, it tasted like it was the last scoop of the day. It was hard. The only thing cooked right, was the egg. We also ordered the Chicken Sisig and I'll be honest, I've never tried Chicken sisig. But hey, I'm open to trying new things. But, it does not look ANYTHING like their photo on DoorDash. It is not appealing and it didn't taste good. It literally just tasted like ground chicken, no seasoning, lemon, peppers!! I'm totally okay with paying the price via third party apps or if I'm ever in person at their restaurant. But I highly doubt I'll be back. Growing up in a Filipino household I was spoiled with home cooked meals everyday. This review is for the FOOD ONLY as I ordered delivery to a non Filipino house - that detail matters for later. I got Chicken Adobo, Sinigang and Kare Kare, the staples. The Sinigang and Adobo were good, the Kare Kare didn't have much flavor, it does come unsalted because you are supposed to add shrimp paste. The issue was they neglected to pack my Bagoong (shrimp paste). It is customarily served with Kare Kare and Sinigang. Neither dish came with the condiment. Here's the thing, I paid for and ordered an additional 2 sides of the shrimp paste on the off chance that they didn't put the condiments in the bag, they wouldn't be able to ignore that I purchased 2 additional sides of the shrimp paste. None of it arrived. If you're familiar with Filipino food you'll understand that this is like serving a hotdog with no mustard or ketchup. Crème brûlée with no caramelized sugar on top, I mean what's the point! Anyway rant over, hey management please put a cheat sheet above the expo line or takeout area so anyone packing food knows what sauces the dishes go with. Seems like a small thing but attention to detail makes a huge difference. I hope this place thrives as I'm always rooting for these types of restaurants but for god sakes give me my Bagoong!!! I ordered thru Uber Eats. The good is that the portions are generous. The bad is that I found the dishes hit or miss. We ordered Pork lumpia 5/5 - not crispy but thats due to delivery times. Flavor was spot on. Lechon 5/5 - a little cold but crunchy and delicious. Must order. Garlic rice 4/5 -Good. Maybe a tad oily. Pork sisig 2/5 - Didn't taste fresh. A lot of oil/liquid in the container. Beef kare kare 3/5 -Veggies tasted good and were fresh. Beef was tender. The sauce was not good. Pretty bland not very peanuty. No shrimp paste was included. Discovered this resto on Uber Eats during the pandemic and I can't wait to visit it when things are more normal again I've ordered a bunch of things here like Sinigang, Beef Nilaga, Ginataan Bilo Bilo, Kare Kare...and they never disappoint. Previously I wasn't able to even order online because their website wasn't working for me, but it looks like that issue is resolved AND they also do Yelp delivery. Yay! Since then I've ordered from here twice. Same dish, the Nilaga. This is one of those classic Filipino dishes that remind you of your childhood. And the Nilaga from Tipunan doesn't disappoint. Tender beef chunks, perfectly cooked veggies (unlike mines where I totally pulverize my veggies lol), and a steamy savory broth. My one wish is that they would actually include Patis (Filipino fish sauce) with it for that island umami. Otherwise, add a side of steamed rice, grab your favorite spoon and fork (the Filipino preferred way of eating asides from just using your hands), and you're good to go! I also appreciate how well put together the delivery order was, that's something I worry about when ordering soup, but mines was well protected and still intact when it arrived.
