TJ's Baroda Tap has quickly carved out a loyal fan base since new owners reopened the iconic corner pub at Lemon Creek Road and 1st Street in downtown Baroda, Michigan. While the building has seen a few name changes and owners over the years, this latest incarnation is clearly hitting the sweet spot with its mix of comfort food classics, creative specials, and a staff that treats you like family. Though the menu shares some greatest hits with its sister location--TJ's Sports Bar & Grill on M-140 in Watervliet--there's plenty that's unique to Baroda, and locals are eating it up. Our first dish was the towering Classic Smashburger. Two seared 4oz patties brought the beefy flavor, but stayed juicy inside. American cheese, shaved lettuce, tomato, pickles, grilled onions, and a creamy house-made "smash sauce" turned this burger into a two-handed, napkin-requiring masterpiece. It's messy in the best way possible--don't even try to eat it pretty. We paired it with their thick-cut Sea Shore Fries--skin-on, seasoned with sea salt, black pepper, and garlic. You can also opt for Crinkle Cut or Zesty French Fries if that's more your vibe. The kitchen loaded up Crinkle Cut Fries into our Bluegill Basket, which is my "go-to" at the Watervliet location. I love the flaky, tender, and mild-tasting bluegill flesh with subtle sweet notes. The light dusting of seasoning in their mix really accentuates the sweetness of the bluegill. I catch and cook bluegill often and have tried without success to duplicate their seasoning blend. Then came The Hammer. And wow--this sandwich doesn't play around. Picture a full pound of hot shaved ham, stacked with melting American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo, all tucked between thick slices of locally-made sourdough that's grilled just enough to hold it all together. It's smoky, salty, juicy, and completely over the top. The fries were the Zesty variety this time, which were thinner but nicely seasoned. Pro tip: If you can't finish The Hammer in one sitting, don't worry--it makes a great breakfast, too. To seal the deal, we munched on the Loaded Nachos. The photo doesn't do its mammoth size justice--this mountain of chips comes smothered in taco meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, olives, and jalapeños. You can upgrade to chicken, steak, pulled pork, or brisket for just a few bucks more. It's so massive they send leftovers home in a pizza box. (True story: Shelly and I took ours to my parents, and they got three more meals out of it!) The bar itself is warm and inviting, centered around a horseshoe-shaped setup with a solid beer tap list--or "Baroda-Soda" as they like to call it. We went on probably one of the busiest evenings for dinner. Valentine's Day. Yes it was Packed and a line to be seated. Efficiently seated when it was our turn. Appetizers came right away. Came to MI to support the local power plant's outage, and a coworker suggested this place. Was not disappointed. I visited back in April, and am being prompted today in July to rate it if I visited, and remember enjoying their BBQ Bacon cheeseburger, and their boneless wings were tasty, breading was unique and not your normal battered and deep fried, but I remember some tropical sauce I chose for the wings? It was busy so I had to wait a couple minutes to get a seat. After sitting down I waited for service for a few minutes, which given how busy they were was expected and acceptable. My surprise was when the bartender came she didn't wipe the bar top which was pretty messy from the last patron. She took my order and delivered my drink and I asked if I could have a bar rag to wipe the bar top. Surprisingly she gave me one rather than doing her job. All this could have been acceptable giving her the benefit of being busy, but I noticed that the same thing happened each time there was a seat turnover so apparently it's just SOP for this restaurant. Went there this evening and was really disappointed I ordered the taco salad with no shell. It was not good at all! Meat was runny and swimming in grease The bowl it was in was very hot then i realized, they melted the cheese under the broiler so with that being said the lettuce was warm and soggy! My girlfriend and I were in here yesterday 11/8/25 around lunchtime and all of a sudden after we ordered a 17 top came in a 12 top n another large group came in. I had blue gill and was very disappointed. It was very greasy and soggy. My husband had the smoked brisket sandwich and It was worse. He said it had no smoky flavor and it was very stringy and tough. It was more like a big chunk of a tough dried out pot roast. No flavor. Our friend had a french dip sandwich and said it wasn't very good either. We never have these issues at the M-140 TJ's.
