PRICING To put things in perspective, the price of sushi in a city is right around what you'd expect (the Yelp scale is accurate at about $13-$15 on average unless you like decimating large amounts of fish). The pricing is worth it though, especially since the quality matches (probably exceeds) the price. SERVICE Excellent! They're so friendly like most places in Coos Bay. They're also relatively quick with orders so the wait time doesn't feel long if you're not a fan of waiting at restaurants. QUALITY I grew up in Hawaii exposed to sashimi and sushi A LOT, and this was fantastic. When you YouTube "authentic sushi/sashimi" people tend to make that comment of the slices in the US being too thin...this place makes it thicc and generous. Planned on sushi, but when I saw on their board of specials for the day that they had Blue Marlin and Mako Shark, I had decided that I wanted to try the Marlin. Since we didn't have a reservation and there was five of us, we had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. This gave me more time to build up the excitement I was feeling to try Marlin. When we were finally seated it was a four-person table and they were about to set the fifth chair on the end of the table right next to a doorway. They figured out pretty quickly that that wasn't going to work and moved us to a different table. When we asked for a gluten-free menu we were basically told to figure it out for ourselves. This is something that can be done easily but it is more preferable to be accommodated in this situation. So, when it was time to order I asked for the Blue Marlin and was then told that there was no Marlin or Shark, then if I wanted fish I would have to have Salmon. I was extremely surprised and disappointed about this. The restaurant staff acted like it was no big deal, and even shrugged it off when I told them they should erase it off of their special board if they don't have it. I just went ahead and ordered some sushi rolls because everybody was putting in their order so I had to do it as well without having much time to decide what I wanted. The whole Marlin situation really annoyed me and almost ruined my dining experience completely. The food came out in a timely manner and was actually quite delicious. Everyone at my table was satisfied with the food that they got. The portions were good and the plating was beautiful. Thank God that the food was good, otherwise I would have given them a bad review for their false advertising. I reckon I've mentioned it to 3 or 4 friends since I've been back. I'm gutted that there's almost no chance I'll ever be in Coos Bay again.... I'll never get to eat sashimi like that again. We love Tokyo Bistro. My daughter is 7 and she loves the mini cucumber salad, Golden California roll with rice paper instead of seaweed (easier to eat), tempura prawns, edamame and the green tea ice cream. My favorite is the Dragon Roll. The owners are very friendly and work very hard. We have been coming since they were in their Charleston location. This restaurant is terrible I got the sesame chicken plate that was $23 and the chicken tasted like it was boiled. They put no seasoning on the chicken at all only hard sesame seeds. The fried rice was undercooked and I kept getting hard pieces of rice in my bites. There was only one other couple at the restaurant and they still took about 30 minutes to get me my food and I only ordered one plate. The waitress is nice but she hardly comes by to help you there was only two people in the restaurant so I felt like I should have been helped more. I have never left a bad/good review before so that should tell you how bad it is. I will never go there again nor recommend it. Tokyo Rose went out of business at the end of World War II but Tokyo Bistro is open and ready for World War III...LOL! Head inside and you will see the nice contemporary interior that was put together by the original business (Empire Cafe). To that add a few Japanese themed decorations but it is not over the top garish. The down notes would be the lack of comfortable booths and a small size as only around three dozen people could eat here at any one time. Looking at the menu shows a lunch listing and a dinner listing with lunch items available until 4 PM, which is quite reasonable. The amount of selections is moderate and proper so you can read through both menus and quickly see what is available without feeling hemmed in to a corner by a smaller group of choices or overwhelmed by too many. Prices are average for most meals and the portions are ample. My friend and I had a bento box and here you get to pick two items to go with the rice, salad and miso soup. He ordered tempura vegetables and teriyaki chicken while I enjoyed the panko-breaded with sesame seed chicken slices and tempura shrimp. There was one snafu and that was when the server got my order wrong, putting tempura vegetables instead of the sesame chicken on the order slip. That error was corrected and the mild delay in getting our meals was not onerous. The dipping sauce is very weak in flavor so add a bit of soy sauce to it so there is some perk, otherwise when it came to taste and quality of ingredients, it was all thumbs up. Service by the Oriental lady was pleasant enough and she did a good job of checking back on us over the course of our meal. Looking at meals that other patrons were enjoying showed large portions were the rule, not the exception. If you enjoy Momiji's cooked food you will find Tokyo Bistro's offerings to be of the same quality. Since I like my seafood cooked I don't do sushi so I cannot rate that part of either place but for those who do enjoy their seafood raw, I would imagine they would be at least satisfactory given their good reviews when this business was located inside the Portside, where the sushi got mostly good reviews. How lucky we people in the Coos Bay-North Bend area are to have two Japanese restaurants that are worthy of this area's dining dollars. It's not Benihana grade but you aren't paying Benihana prices either! Go give them a try and see if they become a keeper for you. They go in the book as one for me! read more

Color me damned surprised. As a native Los Angeles resident, I'm no stranger to good Sushi, and the city of angels has a lot of good establishments. Every other year, I visit family up north in Myrtle Point, and they told me they wanted to take me to a sushi restaurant they loved. I had some skepticism. After one meal, not only was that skepticism erased, but if Tokyo Bistro were near me it would be my go-to eatery. All of the fish was extremely fresh and tasty, but what knocked me out was the house sake. Even the non-sake drinkers at the table were blown away by how good it was. This is by far the best place in the Bay Area for sushi. I've been in several times and they've never once messed up my order. The wait staff does a great job. They're very prompt. The lobster is a fresh as you can get in the west coast. The keep them in an aquarium up by the register.
