Delicious rolls, good quality fish, and excellent selection of sake. However, is significantly more expensive than their competition. And the ambience is significantly better as well than their competition. It may even out if you are going for a date. I would rate this restaurant SIX stars if I had the option! John and Minnie Locke go out of their way to make sure that each and every customer is happy and satisfied with their meal. John is adamant about fresh locally secured sea food. He even provides local fishermen with nitro so that they may flash freeze their catch before bringing it to him for that day's menu! I have personally been sitting at the counter when two beautiful blue fin tuna were brought in from our port in Charleston. The atmosphere is relaxed but classy - you will most likely hear something jazzy or with a bossa nova beat playing quietly in the background. Sushi bar chairs are elevated and comfy and the tables are perfectly placed for quiet conversation. The tuna poke is a favorite of mine. We have enjoyed almost every roll that they have to offer. Here are a few that I HIGHLY recommend: Godzilla, Volcano, Cha Cha (you MUST love garlic for this one) and the Pimp My Roll (macadamia nuts on sushi? GET OUT!!) The new and improved Sushi Garden! What's improved? New menu items, more space, and most importantly, it's closer to Coos Bay! For all the fans of the old Sushi Garden in Charleston, don't worry John and Mimi still pay just as much attention to food details. John is still sourcing and serving only the freshest, local seafood (now including local oysters), in season fruits and vegetables! They even serve home grown, fresh ground wasabi with your sushi. I ate here twice during my to the Oregon coast. The first time I ordered the chirashi bowl. It was beautifully presented, sashimi over sushi rice, and included a deep fried shrimp head. It tasted as good as it looked! The second time I visited, I mentioned how much I like fish and chips. John wasted no time in preparing an order for me. As he was preparing my order, he told me how he only uses local rock fish and rice bran oil for his fish and chips. He also changes the fry oil regularly so it doesn't affect the flavor of the food. John even pointed out that he uses a special paper to serve the order on to absorb any excess oil. All the attention to details paid off: the fish had a crunchy exterior which was not too thick and it was definitely not oily. The fish and chips are served with a tasty house made sauce. Finally, some good fish and chips in the Coos Bay area. Due to the fact the restaurant just opened, service was slow, unfortunately. The wait staff was working out some kinks as well as the kitchen staff. That's the only reason for four stars. I expect all the kinks to be worked out soon given the owners' dedication to their new restaurant. read more

A restaurant worthy of a 5 star review, it really can't get any better than this! I have to hand it to R.A. P. as his review pretty much sums most of this place up and I'll be taking the other half letting you know of the experience with the dinner service as well as their servings of sushi. As far as the menu is concerned, their menu listing is simple, very traditional so making a decision won't be too hard. I went with a Rainbow Roll and a Godzilla to start, one for comparison and one something unique to the restaurant and I'd have to say that I was very impressed with the texture, the taste, and how fresh the fish were. The Rainbow Roll was exactly as advertised and the taste almost blows the competition out of the water! The Godzilla was also just as good, a simple roll with crab in the middle and salmon topped on the outside with fried fish for garnish. Striving for only fresh foods, I can definitely see why this place was the talk of the town even before it opened, heck, what also impressed me was that they use real wasabi! The service was very friendly for the two times that I went to try out Tokyo Bistro, once during the soft opening and again during their opening night. They checked often to ensure that everything was in order or if I needed a refill for my water. One thing is that I'd highly recommend is sitting at the sushi bar as you'll get to witness some of the creations of the chef behind the sushi bar. While you're their, you may just happen to get a taste of some of their other fresh seafood choices. For anyone passing through or if friends happen to stop by in town, I wouldn't hesitate for one second to recommend stopping by Tokyo Bistro to grab a bite for some sushi or even if it's just to stop in to give it a try! read more

Before you read further, please note that I'm from the LA area. I am also a food blogger. Based on the Yelp reviews, I chose this restaurant. My daughter and I ate there and I brought back to-go food for my wife. I ordered a sushi selection: Anago (eel), Uni (sea urchin), Kani (crab), Hokkigai (clam) and Hamachi (yellowtail). The quality was not quite the same as LA, but neither was the price. I thought that this was good quality for the value. My daughter ordered chicken katsu. This katsu was extremely dry and slightly overcooked. I also think they reused the frying oil one too many times because the batter was very dark brown and wasn't as tasty as panko (Japanese bread crumbs) can be. I was extremely disappointed with the "house made" ramen. I wasn't expecting the same quality as Tsujita or Ramen Yamadaya, but this was Instant Ramen. The broth wasn't anything like real ramen. They also included bamboo shoots, peas, carrrots and lima beans. It was almost like they dumped part of a bag of frozen veggies into the ramen broth. C'mon. read more

Wow! What a gem. This place is fantastic. On the smaller side but everybody is very friendly. The owner, John, is always smiling and says hello to everybody, many of them by name. There seem to be a lot of regulars. If's not too busy and you're sitting at the bar and you engage him in conversation he can teach you a lot about sushi. Supposedly only Florida snapper can be sold as sushi, so not fresh, but they get fresh local snapper that is used in several dishes. Ask them, they will tell you if they have any fresh fish that day. The local fisherman sometime bring in random catches of fresh fish. The salmon was fresh this past weekend and so I went twice. It was so good. Soft, and smooth, but with just a bit of texture. Melts in your mouth. You also get large portions of fish with small (but just the right amount of rice). The rice itself is also seasoned just the right amount. I could probably eat it plain. I can tell they take pride in their fish, wanting to only present the best. I sat at the bar 2 nights in a row. Watched them trade their craft. I saw them cut off pieces from the sides that they deemed substandard and throw them away before starting to cut the slices of sushi. It's really fresh. The menu also denotes the items that are "fresh" or "local" or "favorites." I tried the hamachi the first day, good but unfortunately has to be compared to the fresh salmon. The salmon was so good... have I said that yet. The spicy tuna roll was also really good. Not all spice, not all mayo. It was well balanced. The salmon was so good I went back the next day and had more sake and the sake trio. One comes regular, one comes spicy, and another come out smoked. I was a bit hesitant because I really love the clean smooth fresh sake but I was not disappointed. 3 fresh clean cuts, one gets smoked at the table, one gets a small dollop of spicy topping and the other comes out plain with a few thin green onions. MMMmm delicious! Have I mentioned that they fresh wasabi!!! That itself should tell you it's a head above most other sushi restaurants. Most sushi restaurants you get green colored horseradish. They have smooth spicy fresh wasabi. John even grows it in his own garden. he showed me some from the refrigerator. Just like the pictures I've seen on the internet. Just the fact that he took years to learn how to grow wasabi properly shows his dedication to his craft. i was going to go back again tomorrow and try some of their other cooked dishes (if there is no more fresh salmon) but unfortunately they are closed on Mondays. I guess I will have to wait until next month. PS. The poke bowl was also pretty good. If you happen to be in the area and appreciate good sushi, make sure you stop by. The rice on the nigiri wasn't too big/too much as happens in other places, and while they were take out only due to Covid-19 restrictions the food was well packaged and tasted great. The menu situation is a bit confusing as they have multiple menus and then the seasonal specials. I wish the selections were a bit more clear on their web site as one of their menus had options that we might have ordered instead or in addition to our choices. I'm a sushi lover so when my husband asked where I wanted to eat dinner it was an easy choice. Based on previous reviews I chose Tokyo Bistro. Our service was fairly good but our server was a bit short with us, we asked twice for refills of water and beer before recieving them. The place has an open airy seemingly Mediterranean style ambiance and makes for a nice setting to have dinner. Albeit nothing reminiscent of a Tokyo Bistro. Which must be an oxy moron the aproach is clearly Fusion of sorts. The Food came out within a reasonable amount of time around 30 minutes for the bulk of our dinner which consisted of Nigiri and Sashimi and 1 Maki roll. The Food: The Rice was a bit over seasoned for my taste, however most of the fish did appear fresh. Our server did not know if the Salmon was farmed or wild and knew very little about fish in general. We could tell the Salmon was indeed farmed and most likely Atlantic Salmon, which we try and avoid for many health and environmental concerns. I would have given 3 1/2 Stars if available. But I felt 4 stars would be more fair than 3. read more

* Trigger warning - vomit * Ok.. I'll be honest, it was okay but I did throw up. As a traveler from out of state, I was excited to try seafood fresh off the coast and sushi seemed like the right place to start. We stopped in and were seated right away. The lobster tank in the front is cool to look at if you have to wait though. We ordered a ton of food and it all looked delicious when it came to the table. The service was good too. However, the taste of the food was off. The Dungeness crab tasted like a thawed out soapy sponge, the salad in the bento box was drenched in some weird ranch-like sour dressing, the tuna nigiri was super fishy and tasted old, and almost everything we ordered was covered in spicy mayo which we tried our best to scoop off. It all just tasted off and old or weird, like canned or frozen fish and odd sauces. I barely ate much, just a little bite of everything we ordered but I couldn't finish a single thing and I actually threw up three times before I even paid the bill (which was $94.69). The bathroom is nice and clean though, which was good considering I was vomiting in the toilet. Anyways, I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt and blame my nausea on something other than their food, but since it all tasted so weird I feel like it would be safe to say the food played a role in my feeling sick the rest of the day.... Probably as good as it gets in Coos Bay in terms of sushi. Their seafood is always fresh, especially the salmon. The staff is always patient with answering questions and explaining the different rolls. Overall, if I'm in the mood for sushi while I'm in town for work, this is the only place I go. The steamers were absolutely delicious The grilled squid skewers were amazing And the lemon drop roll was the closest I have found to my favorite roll of all time from A San Francisco sushi restaurant 10 years ago. It was spicy tuna topped with fresh Salmon and the most thinly sliced lemon ( I would order next time with the sweet chili sauce on the side or without).
