I'm in LOVE!! Tokyo Central has all of my favorite Japanese foods! From fresh sushi, produce to ramen and ice cream from Hokkaido, it's all here! Check out the sample booths. Today there was yummy Wagyu Ribeye and sake. There's also a grand opening special, 2 lobster tails for $6! Steak and lobster tails for Mother's Day? Sounds good to me! Shopping here will definitely be integrated into my weekly schedule. Prices are very reasonable and I'm sure Tokyo Central will be very popular. We were sadden by news that our nearly 70 years old Times Supermarket was closing, but happy to learned we will be gaining a Specialty Asian Market, Hawaii's first Tokyo Central. There are currently 7 California locations, but not here. We needed one on the Windward side since Don Quijote and Marukai stores were in Honolulu. The store is owned by the same owner (Pan Pacific International Holdings Corp) as Times Supermarkets, Marukai, & Don Quijote. Even Shima's Supermarket & Big Save Markets, Fujioka Wine Times are part of them. If you still need items other from Times Supermarket and live in Kailua, you can drive to Times Supermarket in Kaneohe or Shima's Supermarket in Waimanalo. Tokyo Central in my opinion is like a mini Marukai. Tokyo Central doesn't have the food concessions like at Marukai, but they have a Sushi and Poke sections. The former Times Pharmacy is now a Sushi section. This store offers more Asian products, some local products, essential products and regular groceries. For the steak lovers, they sell their $15,99 steak plates. They use their special technique so their steaks are so soft. There offer a $15.99 Wagyu Kushi plate lunch. Tokyo Central uses Japanese rice. As for desserts, there were cake slices or whole cakes by Soleil Hawaii, Mille cake slices from Japan, donuts and pastries. There was a Fruits & vegetables section, and other sections of Japanese snacks, frozen products imported from Japan, cold & hot to go foods, Self serve Deli of Japanese foods. Just need to come earlier in the day, since later in the evening, the all the prepared food were sold out! In the meat section, I even saw some Sterling Silver Premium meats, and Chairman's Reserve meats. Towards the exit was the liquor section. The nicely renovated store was clean with their beautiful & clear signs. I heard the same workers from Times Supermarket were still there and the store added even more workers. The gift cards is the Times Supermarket gift cards! They are open from 6am-10am daily! There's an Ahi Cutting at 11am Saturday, 5/11/24. Too bad I'm not able to attend! Nice addition to the Kailua location. We don't have to drive into town to get some unique Asian products. May 10, 2024 was their Grand Opening and I wish them well! read more

Tokyo Central just opened in Kailua. It wasn't really a new grand opening since the same owners still own this store. A "rebranding" is more like it. It's basically still times, just with all Japanese products. The parking lot is still junk too. I guess times ended up not being able to compete with Whole Foods and Target, and the closed their doors. Very soon after, though, Tokyo Central opened. They still have a poke counter, a grocery section (extactly where the times grocery section was) and a lot of alcohol. The layout is pretty much the same and it still feels like times in a lot of ways. Anyway, our extended family went on the day they opened and the Don quijote character was out taking pictures with everyone. It's a little scary that Don quijote, times, Shima's and now this place are all owned by the same company. Anyway, we decided to come on Sunday to check it out. It was crowded with other people checking it out too. We ended up spending exactly $50.06 and the cashier gave us a free reusable shopping bag. We didn't even know about the promotion, but I will accept free bags no questions asked haha. We bought a lot of snacks you can find at Don quijote. Actually, I'm pretty sure everything in this store is also sold at Don quijote, but it's nice that I don't have to drive to town anymore to get some things. I think I still prefer H mart for produce, kimchee and ramen selection, but I'll definitely be back to Tokyo Central when I run out of Japanese rice crackers, ochazuke mix and hot pot ingredients. Unfortunately, a lot of the freshly prepared food items were sold out when we went, so I'll have to go back to try some of those as well. I'm honestly a little sad Times closed. I liked times, but I would shop at Shima's more often because it's closer for me. Now that Tokyo Central is open, I hope they continue stocking things that I would usually go to town for. read more

I want to love Tokyo Central because I love Japanese food, but the place has horrible air quality--it smells very strongly of their deep fat fryers. I feel like my clothes and hair will smell that way if I stay in there too long. They desperately need to upgrade their ventilation to dramatically increase the air changes per hour so the place doesn't stink of atomized grease. Also, it's hard to find anything. They need better signage for each aisle. It is also hard to find an employee on the floor to get help. The audio recording out front is just noise, is quite annoying, and not at all inviting. Reminds me of being at the gas station. The recording isn't edited to be short enough to give information to a passerby anyway so I wish they would just get rid of it. I guess they're trying to be affordable, but they also have a lot of very low quality products. Definitely need to read the labels. I hope they can make some improvements ASAP. The way it is now I tend to avoid the place. read more

Don't believe the hype. Lol. If you're a townie like me - this 30 minute drive is completely not worth wasting your gas as it seems like a smaller version of a Donki. On the bright side - the store is clean and there's a lot of parking. Downside - the employees (especially the cashiers) are not that friendly. You can pretty much find the same things as the Donki in town, so unless you're already here or live In Kailua then it's not worth coming to as most of the grocery items and hot food bar items seems to be almost identical. read more

I am so excited that Kailua now has a Tokyo Central/Don Quijote. Living in town, I frequent Don Quijote quite often and I know that when I lived in Kailua, I was seriously missing out. I stopped in for lunch and was so excited with all of the pre-made food options. While there wasn't as much as in town, the options were great and especially for the sushi, I can see that this will be hugely successful in Kailua for beach days, etc. The service was very friendly and I left feeling full and happy. read more

I've been on hunt to find anything and or everything Japanese. After you visit Japan why not! I drove across the long H3 freeway just to check this place out. The verdict? It was worth it. They have so many things from foods and goods all from Japan. In comparison, it's like a smaller Don Quiote. Lots of yummy snacks to try. I ended up getting a popular Japanese shampoo brand Fino and bought tons of snacks. It's a great spot if you're looking for Asian ingredients in Kailua. read more

The mixed ahi poke and the fresh saba filet from the hot foods section were incredible. Don't sleep on the fresh fish! The roast sweet potatoes in the hot cart were cooked perfectly despite feeling a little firm to the touch. I have no complaints about the food, and parking is FREE. I grew up with fresh seafood like this, but forgot how good it tasted after living in Texas for a few years. I regret not trying this place sooner. read more

I visited the store a few days ago and I was disappointed. It is catering to the Japanese customers. So it more of a specialty store. They do offer up hot and cold meals that have an Asian flair. I also think they are expensive. read more

Here is the official Keto Prescription review. I was really excited to check this place out. Was hoping to find another lunch spot or grocery stop on my way home. I'm sad to say that this place is highly disappointing. Let's start with the hot bar. Everything is breaded, deep fried, or swimming in a very dark shoyu-sugar sauce. I tried the pork belly just to try something and it was not the best. Headed towards the back of the store to the sushi section hoping to find either good deals or good quality sashimi. There was neither. Fish was poor to mediocre quality (I tried the otoro and negitoro bowl, threw away the rice of course) and overpriced. The only positive I could find was that the negitoro bowl provided about 1 cup of fish for $13. This entire store is built around high carb, high sugar snacks, Sanrio items and alcohol. If you're looking for a semi healthy meal, this is not the place. I overheard the cashier say that they are owned by Don Quijote so I'm hoping they expand their bento and hot food selection. Kailua needs more Asian food. Don't see myself ever coming back here unless it's to pick up a bottle of ponzu on the way home. read more

Went to Tokyo Central.....part of the Don Quijote chain which includes Marukai. A little disappointed, there was a small selection of hot food and bentos around 11:00 am. Nice selection of bread and sushi. Tons of snack items. it did not compare to the selection at Marukai and Don Q. Expected since smaller space. i think i will stick to Marukai and Don Q. read more

I was anxious to visit the new Tokyo Central in Kailua because I love everything about Japan and I shop regularly at Marukai, Nijiya and Don Quixote. I was worried about parking because that shopping centers parking situation can get pretty busy at times. There was plenty of parking the day I went, week day - midday. I think this market fits right In with the neighborhood because every neighborhood needs ethnic stores to bring character and variety. This store sells pretty much what the other Japanese markets sell. The ready made bentos are reasonably priced, Saba bento for $7.99, takoyaki balls 8 for $6.99. The ready made sushi section reminds me of the Marukai sushi section. I mean the sushi looks exactly the same. They have a good meat section, but the poke section looks pretty plain. I mean it looks like the poke section at Time's which is not great. The shelves are well stocked and, like other markets, there are bargains but not everything is cheap. I live in Aiea and I do come to Kailua to shop at Whole Foods sometimes, so Tokyo Central will be another regular stop. read more

As a loyal Times shopper for 40 years, I was very disappointed when they closed earlier this year to rebrand as the current store. I took it upon myself to do a private protest and not set foot in there. Well today curiosity took me in for my first visit . As soon as you walk in the smell hits you ... a malodorous fish smell. As I walked around , I thought I had stumbled into a weird Disney ride . These little dolls playing annoying music, the signage above. I did not see much in the way of healthy food. Most were loaded with sugar. The food bar was not appealing. I couldn't get out of there fast enough and will never go back again . Didn't see any of the old Times staff. I have spent $60 in this store. When I went to ask for restroom keys from the gentleman with glasses at customer service, he just simply replied " no key available". I was waiting there for 10mins, ultimately the cashier told me to go to the restroom at hallway...this gentlemen with glasses might have a bad day, but unnesasary to put his own stress on customer. read more

Really fresh poke on the big island! I could easily eat 3 pounds of this myself, but the one pound was good for me for a snack! Easy and convenient when you want to pick up quality fish. read more

I liked the variety of sushi dishes, the limited variety of bentos and the sushi "counter ". My experience was soured by the must-be-new-to-customer-service cashier. My total was over $50, the threshold for a free bag-but I was rudely informed that promotional was only for the Grand Opening weekend, even though I saw a placard in the parking lot indicating the offer. I was "informed" that if I read the ad correctly, it said only during the weekend. I told her that they should take down the placards because there as no mention of it. No apology, no solution. I really like their marinated meats for bbq, or quick meal if I don't have time to prep. The lemongrass chicken is my favorite.

Nice to have choices. Tokyo Central Kailua offers a good amount of meats, especially Japanese style cuts, and poke, along with a small selection of Japanese general goods. What disappointed me was in the prepared foods section with the lack of choices, i.e. bentos and hot foods. I was also disappointed in the lack of choices for Japanese green teas. But I realize that this is a very small store, like the Times Supermarket which preceded it, and note that they have to sacrifice their variety. All in all a nice little store, but too bad that they could not replicate their former Don Quijote Kailua store a bit more. read more

So much to choose from Inari Bombs, Inari sushi, lots of other nigiri! The dessert section was so tempting with many beautiful things to choose from. Groceries were amazing. My granddaughter found a shopping bag with characters she loved. On a second visit with my son a few days later we also bought poke and lomi salmon. The nishime from the hot bar was delicious. I used to really love Tokyo Central. I was one of those who braved the opening of this store. Not having to drive up to Marukai, Nijiya's or Don Quijote's in town was a game changer for me. It was nice having a store that had items those 3 stores offered and the other grocery stores didn't. I used to spend an obscene amount of money at Tokyo Central but I guess I can start saving and losing weight again. Fast forward to many months ago (and the reason I deducted a star). After going to Tokyo Central to load up on all my snacks, different brands of ramen and Yakisoba, etc...I discovered that majority of the shelves were now filled with items I could get at the other grocery stores. Gone were all the different Asian food varieties. SADLY, Tokyo Central just became a renamed Times Supermarket. I find myself rarely going in there now because all my favorite things are no longer sold. On a good note, their prepared miso butterfish is to die for! PLEASE become TOKYO CENTRAL again, and limited the American items I can get at Target, Foodland, and Safeway. read more

Bought pork ribs on Sunday with a use by date 9/7/24, today 9/3/24. Awful smell, rinsed and boiled, smell still prevalent. Spoiled, suspecting a re-wrapped and changed use by date. Or pork was thawed and left out of refrigeration . I seen this before with chicken, but somewhere else. Threw it out, should have kept label with date. Wouldn't recommend protein purchase there. My Second time visiting Tokyo Central in Kailua, lots of variety of foods and desserts. When i visit Japan in the past I love going to 7-11 and Family Mart, one of my favorite Sandwich is the Egg Salad Sandwich, so i seen the first time that TC carried it, i wanted to try it the next time i would visit there, so I went in, and they had none, only other sandwiches, so i asked a girl behind the counter if they were going to have any soon, she asked a local person if she was going to make any soon, she replied back, " I haven't made any yet" with a grumpy and no smile at all facial expression, I asked about how long, i wanted to wait if it wasn't long, she turned and kept doing what she was doing and gave me no answer. If this TC was in Japan, they would of smiled and said I'm sorry it isn't ready yet but i can make you one, give me 5 minutes and smile and bow, wish they would Hire Japan workers! That is the Difference between Japan and the USA. read more
