I would give it 5 stars with 5 being how likely you are going to get food poisoning from this place. I have been eating here frequently since it opened when I was a kid, but it has slowly gone downhill over the years. It's sad and disappointing considering it was one of Redding's first Japanese restaurants. The tables and booths are dirty, the bathroom is gross, service is slow (you have to wait at least 15 min after you've been seated until a server even LOOKS at you) and then you feel rushed to pay before you're even done eating, and food quality is poor. Fish is not fresh, and meat smells old. Servers are dressed sloppily and are not personable nor very knowledgeable of the menu items. The very last time I ate here, my teriyaki chicken in my bento box was undercooked, and I didn't realize it until I had already eaten a few pieces. When I realized the next one I was about to eat was nearly raw, I sent it back. A few hours later at home I was hugging the toilet and spent the night on the bathroom floor. I know a few people who have also gotten sick from cooked items here. After so many unpleasant experiences (especially my last one) I've decided to not come here anymore. If you decide to go, you might want to add the health department as a contact in your phone before dining there. read more

My boyfriend and I have been trying out different sushi places and this one is currently in second. I really liked the decor nothing cheesy. The hostess was friendly as was our server. The server however was dressed inappropriately. She was in her street clothes, there was no effort put in to look nice at work. We ordered a few different rolls along with tempura vegetables and pot-stickers as appetizers. Our appetizer got served to the table that ordered way after us so we had to wait while they remade our order. Our rolls came out basically with our appetizer and they were pretty good which is why they got 4 stars. Not the best place in Redding (according to me) but I will definitely eat there often especially with the prices being so low. read more

Ordered to-go. After we got home, checked order and it was missing items, hostess states she checked order and it was correct. Was adamant on the subject. Pretty much told us it is how it is and if we didn't like it, we could go elsewhere. Will DEFINITELY be going elsewhere from now on. Food is mediocre and the tempura serving sizes are on the smaller side. Service is unacceptably slow. Walked in to place a takeout order for tempura. Was told it would take 25-30 minutes. Came back 30 minutes later and have been told for the last 20 minutes that they are still bagging up my order. It's only two orders of tempura. Don't recommend eating here. read more

Went here last time I was in town and I wasn't impressed. The sushi was eh- and I didnt even venture to get fish. I got some weird vegetable stuff. The salad only had one kind of dressing- peanut. Ugh I hate peanut dressing. What happened to the others? Teriyaki sauce was still good and thick and tasty on rice. I was not diggin the salmon teriyaki nor did i like the miso soup. I haven't tried a lot of sushi here, so don't look at my review for that. But I do get their lunch boxes ALL the time - and I really enjoy them! They are priced really well and you get a lot of food. I usually get the box with teriyaki chicken over steamed rice, california roll (3 pieces), tempura (veggies and shrimp), and it also has a small salad. It does take a long time to get my food (I always get it to go). I used to go in and order and wait....then I started going in and then walking over to Payless or Gottschalks...but now I try to call ahead from my work, wait about 5 mins and then drive over there to pick it up. It's not the best I've ever had, but I enjoy it. It's a nice break from my regular lunch time meal. read more

After a long drive to visit Redding, we were excited to eat. The waitress was friendly and attentive, but the food was mediocre or bad. Noodle soup was not flavorful, and the expensive $25 Tokyo Garden lobster was just a roll with a lobster shell as decoration. Bento was not bad, but it's hard to go wrong with fried vegetables. We finished out plates, we really did not have an enjoyable dinner. 4 for the waitress and 1 for the food, 3 for the price. read more

I love sushi, and my husband and I really enjoyed tokyo garden, restaurant is a bit stuffy, but fish seems fresh and is verrry delicious. I recommend the Elmo roll, and vegetable tempura! mmmmm!! Well after being a loyal customer to this establishment I am now rethinking completely. I had ordered online close to $60 worth of food to have delivered to my work place, and after 30 min and a charge to my card they decided to then notify me that they do not deliver between 2-5. This is no where located on their website....even papa johns and domino's will let you know if they can or cannot deliver online.....but hey fresh food compared to pizza wasteland who knew? I certainly appreciate the fact they waited 30 min to contact me....off to search for a better sushi option!! read more

The sushi is super dry because it has no sauce like eel sauce or spicy mayo...nothing. The bean sprouts make the sushi taste a little bit bitter. I got the spider roll and the Godzilla and they don't come out warm since they have fried tempura..they came out cold. I don't recommend because the price is way too high for such basic dry tasting rolls! I mean $15 a roll is way too much. I expect more for that price. The only good thing is that the staff is friendly and it's a dim quiet environment. I don't recommend this place if you want good fresh sushi. read more

I don't normally ever feel the need complain about an establishment,especially because I understand the staffing issues the world is having but,this place had lots of staff and wasn't very busy. I've been wanting to try this place because it's close to my work and only takes me 1 minute to get there. There should be NO reason I sit down and have to wait for my food for an hour when EVERYONE else got their food before me. People who sat 20-30 minutes after me, got their food when all I ordered was a California roll. The waitress, the older waitress( only older one there), didn't even bother to check in on me or ask if I needed anything. I truly felt as if she was intentionally ignoring me because I couldn't get her to stop when she walked by. I would of loved to spend more money there, possibly getting another roll or two for dinner later,but I was so disappointed. When I did get her attention,i asked her if I could just get my check, of course my food was "magically" done, more like thrown together. Today 9/19/18, I called Tokyo Garden at 9:10 I asked to do a To-Go Order of large miso soup she said, they were closed. I said, says 9:30pm, and my husband is sick, she places me on hold. Comes back says ok. I ordered it. I get there by 9:17 and get back to my hotel and it's cold, like warm if that. Top it off NO miso only pure broth. The sashimi is good, that's about it. I called and told the server or whomever picks up the phone. She's like, "oh ok" I'm like, just wanted to let y'all know. No nothing. Poor customer service and poor quality of broth. read more

Tokyo garden has usually supplied with great food and decent service. I thought it would make a great place to go on a date to. Until this particular day. We ordered our food, two rolls, and a veggie platter.. Not much, right? We waiting for a half an hour, finishing our waters and mi so soup we had been told about twenty five minutes in that our food was "almost ready". That's when the straw landed on the camels back and the two gentlemen sitting in the booth next to us (who, mind you showed up about ten minutes after us) received their food before us. ehhhhh, it's OK. Pros: Sushi Chef's are fun to talk to. They'll make anything custom you like which was nice. Fast service, waitress(s) were very attentive and aim to please even at the Sushi bar. The pick up order times have been between 45min-1hr but I understand that's because a lot of people are not dining in. I'm sad about the red blossom roll, it used to be my favorite; towering with tuna and garlic. Now it's puny in comparison but the same price 17.95. Please change it back! Literally the worst sushi ive had, the spicy eduma was a joke, no sause just a spicy powder with zero flavor, there are zero pictures and zero descriptions of any of there food items, sushi roll that had crab salad in it tasted like it was out of date and definitely wasnt crab salad, just plain crab when thats not what was descripted it also had a random fish on top that also was not named off on the list of ingredients. I was reluctant to try sushi at Redding at first, but it turned out to be quite good. They offer a range of sushi boats with neat names - like pirate ship, luxury liner, etc., that are meant for sharing. The boats range in price from $30 to over $70. The sushi boats also come with miso soup, edamame (salted, boiled soy beans) and salad. If you are not a fan of sushi, they also offer lots of other choices, such as bento (combination) boxes, noodles, donburi (rice bowls), and sukiyaki (noodle soup). Typical dinner entree prices are $8 to $14. Bottom line: Exceptional sushi restaurant, super nice and friendly service. read more

I used to enjoy their dragon rolls, but the service is so bad I quit going. The last two visits we were given menus, had or order taken and then the server pulls a Houdini and disappears. Someone else dropped the food off which was meh. No refills, no asking how the food was, and we had to sit there for at least 10 minutes after finishing trying to get someone's attention to bring us our bill. Our go to for sushi now is Kampai (we order pick up because the service sucks equally bad, but the rolls are the best in the area). If someone was to open a sushi joint in Redding with good quality food AND good service it would be a huge success. read more

We ordered 2 different rolls for lunch yesterday. I have to say this is the worst Sushi I have ever eaten. The grocery store would be better..........no lie. Did I order the wrong rolls? I'd like to begin this review by saying that I no longer reside in Redding, I've since moved to southern California where I'm blessed enough to have a very wide range of different types of restaurants available to me well as Japanese restaurants who pride themselves on being the best. Whenever I make the trip home this along with a few other places are absolute musts on my go to list. When I was a kid, I developed my taste for sushi and asian soups here, so of course this is where I consider to be the most suited to my taste buds. My wife and I went on July 4th to order a meal togo and had a really bad experience with supposedly the manager after we had took our Vegetable Deluxe home. They forgot to provide us with the rice and salad that came with the entree and so we called them. To my surprise, the lady who claimed to be the manager told me all she can do was give me the rice and salad for pick up. No discounts, No money back, No other option except to give me my rice and salad either the same night or the next day. Why the hell would I want to drive back just to pick up that? I could just make it at home if I wanted to but my wife really wanted to eat there so I paid for it. I really like the food there but man what a crap experience especially on a holiday. Have been going to Tokyo Garden for years and having slowly been watching it go down hill. This time we went there's hardly anybody in the restaurant and we still waited 25 minutes to just get 1 roll . The service is horrible. Then when our plates come they were all dirty. The rolls have gotten so small it's pathetic. We did order 2 of the speciality rolls that were pretty decent. When we went to pay the girl who took our money said NOTHING to us about the food. Average Japanese (but in Redding, that's not bad) We needed a change of pace from the usual Redding American fare and on 4th of July, many places were closed so we opted for Tokyo Garden. I had a dinner box combo of chicken teriyaki, tempura, and California roll. Wife had the oyaku don. Both dishes weren't bad. It's early (5pm) on a Sunday and our family had reservation for 9 for a 16th Birthday dinner. We were placed at a table in the back by the server station although many other options were possible. Ironically, as close as we were to the server station, our drinks were never refilled until we asked her and then she took quite a while to return. The food itself was fine but the service atrocious. The server even chastised the birthday girl when she was ordering - she was asked to bring the brown rice tea, to which the server retorted "We only have one type of tea," with more attitude than was necessary. This is my go to sushi place in Shasta County due to the huge selection! Sashimi is always fresh! My favorite rolls are the 007 and the fire house. The sushi chefs are friendly and will customize your roll or make something based on what you like. They take a long time to kick out orders around lunch or dinner, so call ahead and be prepared to wait over an hour. And if they tell you it's ready in 30, don't believe them! EVERY TIME, and I mean, EVERY, I place an order and they say 20, 15, 30 mins, I have had to wait an additional 15-20 after arriving on time.
