Haven't been here in a while, but every time I have gone, its been great. Just before I moved to Okinawa, Japan, I went there to try out the foods. It was really good and the staff was really friendly. When I came home from Okinawa 3 years later, I was happy that they were still there. Whenever I feel like I am missing Okinawa, I go in there and have a bite to eat. I have never had a bad experience with the food or the staff, just a couple of times with the people I've taken haven't been as good as I had hoped. This is for sure the best restaurant in Redding. If you are looking for fresh unique sushi with wonderful sauces then Tokyo Garden is the place to go. It is a little on the pricier side but it is totally worth it. The atmosphere is inviting and family friendly. The food isn't horrible but the rolls are tiny (you can get the exact same menu practically across town with rolls twice the size). The staff is really friendly, but the service seems to take a long time. If you plan on lunch here, be ready for at least an hour. Sorry but we will never return. The Service is Heh and the food is pretty good but the buzzing flys around our table was a turn off and what did it for us is the conditions of the bathroom. The mens bathroom is absolutely filthy and has probably never been updated just like the restaurant it self. The sink is loaded with mold around the back edge which brings my attention to the kitchen and the food prep area. I've been coming here for at least 15 years and I have to say that this place is getting dirtier and dirtier as time goes on. The food and portions are decent but the dirty floors, disgusting bathrooms and sewage smell in the back is more than I can take. The owner wasted money putting in some kind of lounge area when he should have put in new carpeting, booths, bathrooms, etc. I'll be trying out some of the other Japanese restaurants in the area to find a replacement and that's too bad because this was always a convenient place to go. read more

So far my favorite sushi place in redding. Their inari and cold soba are not very good but everything else is excellent. The chefs at the sushi bar remember your name and favorite rolls, they have a good hot tea, their sushi is great, and the atmosphere is pretty nice. read more

After reading such poor reviews, I was hesitant to try this place for lunch but loved it! The Zig Zag roll was amazing and so was the Lion King. We also ordered the volcano and didn't love that one. Our service was excellent and my only complaint was that it was a bit pricey! After tip, our lunch was almost $60 and we only had water and three rolls. I was impressed with the size of the rolls and we even have enough left overs for another meal. read more

Sub par as far as sushi and seafood are concerned in my opinion. My wife and I just went on our date night there tonight and were very unimpressed. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good. There isn't much space and our server sat myself out wife and our baby at a tiny 2 person table with no space for food without our son knocking everything around. So we asked to move to a booth and they did which was nice. We ordered the calamari appetizer and when we got it, it was more like fish sticks and bbq sauce. The breading was bad and it didn't seem fresh at all. Definitely the worst resultant calamari I've been served. Next we ordered 4 rolls 2 15 dollar special rolls rolls 2 run of the mill spicy tuna and salmon cream cheese. The specialty rolls were pretty good. The dragon ball roll was great and probably the best of the night. However the spicy tuna roll was weird. Instead of pink or red like raw tuna typically is it was almost blue and smelled and tested very odd and fishy. I only had 2 bites before I decided not to chance it and left it alone. Even the waitress said " oh I wasn't sure this was your order because the tuna looks odd and pale" and still served it to me..now food aside the service was ok I guess, a solid c- I would say, not great, not good, pretty ok though. No additional pleasantries she didn't really check on us much but I guess we got everything we asked for. Anyway that's my review I just wanted to get some info out for people looking for sushi in the Redding area, this place, might not be it. Other than the service this place is horrendous. If you enjoy staring blankly at the bathroom wall for hours on end then eat their sushi. I laugh at these positive reviews. Have these people ever tried sushi? Drive to the bay were the sushi is fresh and delicious. Pepto Bismol is absolutely necessary after consuming any sushi here. I was craving sushi after a rough couple of days of not wanting to eat much, so my boyfriend and I decided to go to Tokyo Garden for a "date night" which was Tuesday 12/6/16. So I figured going there at 6 o' clock would be no biggie. We were sat on the other side of the wall, in the far back corner. Next to us was a huge dinner party. I'm only giving it 2 stars because the waitress that helped us was decent-ish. She comes and gets our orders, I sip on my root beer and notice it has almost no taste, and it's extremely flat. I kid you not, 20 mins rolls by. Nothing. 10 more mins pass by, and she asks if we'd like a refill. I politely let her know the root beer is terrible and I'd love a lemonade instead. 10 mins later, and we get our drink. Getting our actual FOOD took us almost TWO hours. Are you kidding me?! I'm never one to complain about waiting because I work in the coffee business, so I get it. But this was insane. After we eat our food, we leave. Come home and after an hour, we BOTH have urges to puke. I am calling to complain, I've tried all week to get a manager on the phone and they're "never there." this is ridiculous. read more

So so sad that I can't give this less than one star. I wrote a review earlier tonight that wasn't finished and may or may not have posted so I'll write this again. I ate here tonight. During dinner a small mouse went crawling across the ground. A waitress grabbed a glass and caught it. Then one of the cooks came and grabbed it with his bare hands. I couldn't help but wonder if he washed them. It was my wife's birthday and both of us became nauseous. I could barely finish my food. The only reason I didn't just get up and leave is because we were past the point of hungry. I got the bill and went to pay it. When I told our waitress of our frustration she took off then entree and gave me a 25% discount. That wasn't enough. I wanted it for free. She was very kind and told me that the owner wouldn't allow her to take off any more, but if she could, she would. Another waitress stopped by our table and told me I should never come back. She said that she tells her friends to stay away because of the conditions in the back. Last time we were here we had a horrible experience (I never complain about restaurants I grew up in a tiny redneck town that has horrible restaurants to most peoples standards so I'm rarely phased by a restaurant in a "larger" city) and we decided to never return, but my wife was given a gift certificate for her b-day so we went against our decision. Took my mother to lunch here on Saturday. I've eaten here before when I got a craving for a bento, but it has been a while since I moved from the area. I was pleasantly surprised to see they have expanded their menu and have a large assortment of sushi. I went for my usual bento and my mom had udon with tempura. me and wife have been here several times. it is our favourit sushi bar, i love the unakyu rolls(eel) and she gets the vegetarian options. you cant beat it for the price either. they have an extensive secret menu that includes massive rolls unheard off to the western world. the biggest down fall to the place is the service, it really shows how service can impact someones opinion on a restaurant. none the less we still go there and cross our fingers hoping that we get a good server. you can get stuffed for cheap and the food is great. read more

I'm going to start off by saying that the food was great like it usually is but the service was the absolute worst. My lady and I arrive at the restaurant and there is a ten minute wait, which is alright because it's expected on a Friday night. Once we were seated though, it took us about 7-10 just to get a drink order and the server couldn't have made us feel any more rushed than she already made us feel. After we placed the order we got our drinks, and ordered our food and never saw her again for about 15 min, both of our water glasses remained empty until the food arrived and she still have the vibe off that she could care less about our visit. While we ate, a couple of the other servers were huddled around the computers chatting and not paying attention to their dining room or the patrons; two of them were also on their phone. The table next to us even asked where their waitress had gone. Needless to say with the lackluster service offered here it's hard to believe that they have any customers to begin with, which is a shame because the food is delicious. read more

My wife and daughter always enjoyed the place before our last visit. Me, I've never been a big fan. I'm a returning customer but after me and my fiance had a night at this restaurant (since this WAS our to-go place) we both decided we wouldn't be coming back again. Our food took forever to come to us and when it did, it was cold and soggy/doughy. My fiance brought this up to our waitress who straight up snapped at her immediately. In the end my fiance couldn't eat her full meal and when brought up to the rest of the staff, they all spit attitude and disrespect at her. They ended up shoving her receipt back at her making her pay the entirety of her meal, which again, she didn't eat. This left a bitter taste in our mouths. Normally if we were treated more nicely and respectfully I wouldn't be here writing this, we're definitely understanding people. This is actually the first time I ever resulted to a Yelp review, that's how sour the taste in my mouth is! Not an awesome first visit. The restaurant is divided into two rooms. Each seats about 25 or so. We were seated in room one. There was one couple in our room. After ordering, I walked into the other room where there was a table for 6 and one of 4. Not too many folks in total. I had ordered chirashi, (raw fish over rice). Wife ordered sukiyaki, a very popular one-pot meal in Japan (hot dish in a skillet as described in About.com; I've never been to Japan). Long, long wait. Wife's skillet arrived, without the side dish of rice, and waitress explained that mine would be delayed because the kitchen wasn't coordinating things very well. Mine would be out shortly. I sat there looking at the guys behind the counter doing their thing and moving slowly as platters headed to the other room. I watched the staff and owners stand around talking. After about thirty minutes I asked to speak with the owner, Peter. I asked how is it that they can serve hot food fast and not manage to coordinate our dinners and toss some raw fish on a plate for just one hungry guy. He snapped his fingers and my dinner was delivered several minutes later. Staff is not focused on delivering orders and apologies for delays but does not have the initiative to rock the boat. Our waitress expressed pride that she has worked there for 10 years. My wife always gets angry at me for complaining to owners/managers when they drop the ball. Wife tips well anyway (she handles the bank). Experience caused us not to want to go back. Owner and wife are not minding the store. Dinner was good, but not worth the effort. read more

My girlfriend and I came here I ordered the sesame chicken dinner and she ordered the combination box my chicken was crispy and fresh and tasted amazing and she was just as pleased with her meal. They were a little busy and there's not much of a place to wait but we were seated quickly. We were shown to our table and a few minutes later the waitress showed up and asked if we were ready to order. Started off with some hot sake which tasted great also. Tokyo Garden was the last restaurant in Redding I checked out. Partly because I never heard anything - good or bad - about it, besides some low budget commercial. I finally went on an invitation from an out of town friend who said it was supposed to be the best in town. It's not. The interior of the restaurant is like cafeteria meets knockoff Chinese chic. The service was ok. My server was a bit on the slow side and she was forgetful towards the end. What I noticed immediately was the hot tea was horrible - it had a funky, burnt taste. And it was the most pathetic miso soup I've ever had! Miso-less. While some of the expensive entrees looked amazing, only 2 of the 7 ordered tasted as good as they looked. I don't believe on having to pay over $15 to get a decent roll. On the positive side - the seared tuna was fab and the nigiri portions were good, but at a cost. Bottom line is that I was unimpressed and won't be going back. I found Kampai and Yama much better. read more

SUSHI SUSHI SUSHI....oh how i love you....:) So many kinds, so many styles, and so many textures. I love sushi. I have had "all you can eat" from casinos in Reno, to hole in the wall joints in downtown Beijing. to "least likely to have good sushi eateries" in Waco, TX, to high end places like "Raw Bar" in Chico, CA, and my most recent trip to Vegas at one of YELP's top 100's "Soho Japanese Restaurant." All in all most have been great but because i frequent them so often there have been a few failures, but those are few and far between. Tokyo Garden has been providing just fine sushi in Redding for many years and so far besides one time where i sent back the fish cause of an obvious odor brought upon by age, every visit has been great. Now with the addition of the Sweet Spot next door and their craft beer selection i can enjoy two of my most favorite things: sushi and craft beer. You should really give it a try...:) read more

Such a low rating for this place. Reading through all the complaints it seems like i've been going to an entirely different place. I've never had to wait long for service, or no longer than any other place. The food has always been cooked well, and not overly salty or seasoned. I always tend to get the special rolls, which admittedly are expensive, but worth it in my mind. Jackpot roll will blow your mind. And for all those pretentious enough to say that it isn't up to your lofty standards, get over yourselves. Best sushi in town, in my opinion. Worst service ever. The male server in the second room was as slow as he could be. He spent most of his time standing next to the cooks line looking at his server book. Sat immediately, host brought us waters. Took about 5 minutes for the server to greet us. He then brought our food out about 30 minutes later, failed to bring soup and salad. I asked him about it when our food arrived and all he had to say was "oh yeah". No apologies nothing. We didn't have any forks or chopsticks to eat so we got to sit there and look at our food. That was awesome. We finished and it took him awhile to bring our check. At that point, i wanted to leave so i walked up to the front to pay. Where our server than decided he wanted to be present and be an actual server and he ran to meet us at the host stand to run our card. food was great, host was great.
