I've been here a few times over the years and it gets a little more disappointing each time. Inside and outside, the place isn't very clean. The service gets slower and a little worse each time. They forget our orders and drinks, and we have to flag them down and remind them. The food and portions are average at best. Not great value. I have only ever been here for dinner on weekend nights, so I can't say how it is for lunch or less busy nights. But based on my experiences, I would say you should pass on Tokyo Wako for special occasions. read more

I've been to Tokyo Wako in Pasadena a few times, but never to Arcadia location. We recently had our holiday luncheon here for work and experience was wonderful. First of all, the location is superb - right off of main road on Huntington Drive with plenty of parking. Once inside the space is very inviting and roomy. Guess are seated once everyone arrives. We sat on left side of the dining room and seats were very comfy. Everyone ordered the lunch combo special which is a great deal and comes with a choice of 2 or 3 meat items for $17-$20. I ordered the chicken and filet mignon ($3 more). Both were divine! The steak was perfectly cooked to my preference (medium) and was so tender. The 3 types of sauces that accompanied it paired nicely. I couldn't decide which sauce I liked the most so I ended up double dipping all three. Our meals were served with soup, salad, vegetables and white rice. I upgraded to fried rice ($2.50 more) and it was delicious. Everything tasted great including the sauteed vegetables. I guess the key is using tons of butter on everything, which is not exactly very Japanese, but delicious. Service was good too. The staff was friendly and our server came by regularly to refill our drinks. The chef was very entertaining, he did so many tricks while cooking up a great meal. The highlight of teppan cooking presentation is stacking raw onion rings into cylinder and lighting it up like a volcano. There were plenty of oohs and aahs at our table. Having your dinner prepared in front of you is both entertaining and mouth watering. Our team had so much fun that day. read more

I love to come back here and eat when we can sit down inside because they remodel the interior, and it looks fantastic. I was invited for an elite perk and was treated to their famous Bento box, which I thought was just ok. Bento Box 3 1/2 stars *** I order the bento box, which featured Teriyaki chicken, California crab rolls, salad, egg fried rice, and Japanese mushroom onion soup! The teriyaki chicken was ok and reminded me of flame broiler chicken, and the fried rice was a bit overcooked. The soup was way too salty, but the crab rolls were tasty, and being a sushi restaurant, I wasn't surprised. The workers were lovely and welcoming! The Ambiance was missing because no one is allowed to eat inside. However, the koi-pond outside is gorgeous and a must see. 3rd time here at this restaurant and this is will be my last time. Service from Waitress is not so bad, food taste good. But one of the main reason we go to Teppanyaki is about the show from the teppan chef. The chef we had today didn't do anything other than getting our food cooked. He was quiet for whole time and offered no entertainment at all regardless there were total 3 kids at the table. You can hear the woo and wow from other tables. Our table was just silent at whole time. So at the end of the meal, we made a complain to the waitress. Restaurant only offered to waive the charge of the kid's meal. If performing a show for the diners is depending on the chef, I am hoping the restaurant would ask the guest for the preference before sitting. read more

In drastic times such as the COVID-19 shutdown, there are people who do try to take precautionary measures by ordering food for delivery. In my case I ordered from Tokyo Wako in Arcadia and was treated poorly when I called to make them aware that upon arrival their delivery person dropped part of my order on the ground. They told me that it wasn't their fault although I order directly through their site. Now here I am cheated out of my food and money. I had the emperor steak and chicken combo and it was excellent. The "3 shrimp appetizer" that is included is 3 sauteed shrimp that comes on the plate. You get 2 sauces: a spicy vinegary one that's good with steak and chicken and a creamy one that's good with shrimp. House mushroom soup broth is simple but tasty and so is the dinner salad with ginger dressing. Also don't forget to check out my video of the fish swimming in the pond by the entrance. My family and I had a disappointing experience at Tokyo Wako. We went to celebrate a birthday. And while the food was good and generally what we expected, the service was extremely disappointing. We waited quite a long time to get menus (the QR codes at the table were faded and wouldn't launch menus) and the appetizers were very late in arriving. But, if that was it, our experience would've been fine. However, the chef continuously fouled up the orders, causing everyone to halt their conversations to correct things. Then, once the main dinner was complete, we were effectively abandoned by the restaurant. I had to get up multiple times to request takeout boxes and the check. No one asked if we wanted dessert, and no one came by to sing the birthday song. For the money they charge... not worth it. read more

To start, packaging was very nice and so were the staff. The bento box was okay. I don't think it was anything that made it stand out from other bento boxes that cost less. The fried rice was seasoned well and so was my chicken. My side salad had lots of ends of the ice berg lettuce which sometimes isn't the greatest. The California roll was prepared okay as well. We also purchased a beef bento box where it came with white rice, tempura, and a side salad. The beef was shockingly cold to the core. We ordered at the restaurant and waited over 45 minutes for our orders and we live 10 minutes away so the food shouldn't have gotten cold that fast. The white rice was still warm but the tempura was already soggy. We were supposed to be called when our order was ready and they never called. We had to go to the front and ask about our order. They said that the order was just made. I don't think this was true since the beef was very cold. I will probably not be revisiting this place. read more

This review is for the Arcadia location. I booked reservations for me and my family here and I did not leave satisfied. I honestly did not know what to expect since I haven't been here since before COVID however, this is my reasoning for only 1 star. This place is very expensive when it comes to their menu, understandably because you would normally get a cooking show from your cook... originally. Now, since COVID, no cooking shows are conducted and it outdoor seating ONLY, still understandable, but their menu prices are still the same? I ordered the emperor steak and shrimp with my steak medium and when I received my order, the food was cold and my steak tasted completely dry. 2nd reason was the service, on both yelp and their websites it states they closed at 9:30PM. It was only 8:30PM and I felt like we were being rushed out of the place. We tried to order another drink and they told us no because they were closing. They started grabbing our plates and we were not even finished eating yet nor did they ask if we wanted to-go boxes. I asked why they were rushing us out if they close at 9:30PM and they told us because their dishwashers were leaving and had to wash everything now. I felt very uncomfortable, since my family in which I haven't seen in years came into town for a night dinner and I chose this place because I thought I wasnt going to be disappointed. I was wrong. I had not been here in at lease 7 years, on 6/8/2024 a friend reminded me and wanted to get friends together to meet here. When I walked in I noticed it was not that busy. I had to use the restroom and noticed they were horrible, not clean, the floor was wet I almost slipped, the restroom stunk. We were called for our table and our cook didn't give us a show, my food shrimp and steak were over cooked and rubbery! I brought this to the attention of the Manager and all he said was I don't know your cook and I will speak to him, I had already paid for my food and should have just walked out ! This manager does not know how to manage I will no longer visit this location, it has went down hill from the previous time I was here. Oh gosh what a waist of money. We took our parents here to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, just family 12 of us. We were told over 9 people and an 18% gratuity would be added. I guess when your 18% tip is a for sure thing then you don't have to do your job. The girl was very sweet but we never saw her after we ordered; oh wait we also saw her when she brought the bill to collect her 18%. I had to leave the table on two occasions to ask the manager and another waitress for water refills. The cook was confused and left our food on the grill longer trying to figure out who the food belong to. My scallops were burnt, along with other items. The show sucked!!!! Our bill was over $825.00. After move out of Arcadia 20 years ago we seldom come back to Tokyo Wako. Coming back brings back a lot of memories. This was one of earlier teppanyaki place in Southern California. I remember we use to have gathering at this resturant when ever a friend visit us from overseas. We decided to try their Bento since all dining in are closed at the moment. We ordered Salmon Bento, Teriyaki Chicken Bento, and Imperial Sushi Bento. First of all the package and Bag of these Bentos are really nice. It looks like gift boxes and the only draw back is you can not hold the string on the bag coz the Bentos has to lay flat or you won't want to eat them lol. Salmon was made right and all the sides made just right such as salad, California roll and rice. As for Teriyaki Chicken is when they loss a point since it was sold hard and dry, but again the sides like California Roll, salad and fried rice were all good. Last box is the eye catching one other has variety of sushi and all made fresh and good. We are definitely coming back for more! read more

I was really surprised at some of the low ratings that I've come across? I've been coming here for years, the service & food has always been great, maybe that comes down to me having been more of a "regular" for so long...who knows. Decor & atmosphere here is wonderful, the koi pond & interior decorating is perfectly fitting for the name "Tokyo wako". It's always super clean here & I've always been greeted at the front right away. Service like I said before has always been on point, our waitresses check up on us often & our drinks are always refilled. I've also found them to be accommodating for lunch, normally most teppan restaurants make you wait until the table is full before cooking for you which can be so rude and annoying if their having a slow day! However here at Tokyo wako we've barley waited 10 mins. before they gave us the table to ourselves. Food here is great! And especially if your coming for lunch a bargain. Their combination plates only run you about $15-18 and that's for soup or salad, 2 proteins, rice, and veggies! I call that a great deal for high quality seafoods & meats. Everything I've ever tried here is great, shrimp, lobster, scallops, beef, chicken...nothing has ever disappointed. Their sushi bar is darling as well, I haven't had a chance to order at the bar but for our teppan table we've order sushi before & it's been 4-5 stars worthy so I don't know what everyone's complaining about. I didn't really have high expectations, given that we had tried to go to Maki & Sushi first (but wait was too long), but my chirashi bowl was pretty decent. Probably fun for a special occasion, but I doubt I'll experience it (done the Benihana thing before). People looked like they were enjoying it though so definitely a fun ambiance. Everything in my chirashi ($17) was buttery deliciousness except the halibut, of which was really chewy. The rice was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and I had learned while in Tokyo, the rice is the most important part!! It came with salmon, tuna, halibut and mackerel. Business must really be good to turn away customers. Went Friday night, arrived around 8:20. When walked in 4 people were leaving, which did not look happy. There were two people in front of me at the host stand and they turned around and left, not knowing what is happening I asked for four people and the hostess told me that they were closed. I asked when do you close, her response was we are closed. It is a Friday night and not even dark outside. After I checked and their hours were until 9pm according to Yelp. As we walked out a party of 5 were coming in, they got turned away. As we were pulling out two more cars came into the parking lot. That was 15 people that I physically saw and lets assume the other two cars had a total of 6 people that would be 21 people they turned away. The average person ticket is probably $40 to $60, that is $840 to $1260 in sales. Not the first time I had problems at this location, definitely will not go back. The only reason why I went this time is because Shogun had a line out the door. I will stay with Shogun in the future, they at least value your business. read more

We just came back for a special event dinner at Tokyo Wako in Arcadia. This is a "fine dining" restaurant. We had the special seafood teppan dinner (lobster, scallops, and shrimp) and the steak and salmon dinner. Also the sashimi combo and plum wine. We were super happy with the quality of the food, the friendly service, the great teppan chef who cooked everything to order, and the setting. Cloth table cloths, rapid service and clearing of dishes, attentive service. For all this fresh and wonderful food and great service expect fine dining prices which are fair (don't expect bargain basement prices). This restaurant has survived several decades including the great recession and COVID and there is a reason. Also they have small rooms great for a small party, a nice sushi bar, and table service if you don't want teppan. read more

Been frequenting Tokyo Wako for many years now & used to be a fan of this place. Over the years the quality of the food and service has declined which I hated to admit. Most recently, and likely my last time visiting the restaurant I was there with my Family for a Birthday celebration and an incident occurred. I notified the Manager on duty at the time which noted pictures and gave me corporates email address to follow up with. I sent an email and followed up twice after that over the following weeks and got no response. The sashimi is fresh, just a little too thick, I prefer thinner ones. The sushi was so good. A few hot dishes to share: Soft shell crab: meaty and yummy Manila clam miso soup: light and delicious Fried oysters: the server assumed we wanted fried ones, they didn't have raw ones :( I don't eat fried oysters, hubby said it was OK Fried rice with steak on top: the Fried rice was so delicious, steak was a little over cooked. The portions were big for Japanese restaurant, the spicy tuna crispy rice was the biggest I have ever had! Great eatertainment! Friendly teppan chefs (okay so they may not be all asian). Cool asian hosts with colorful hair!. I prefer Tokyo Wako over Benehana as it seems more down and dirty. Same format, same process, etc. and similar menus but I like the sushi and happy hour choices at Tokyo Wako better. Also it seems more family friendly. Not really for lunch as it does take a while and you need to be patient (don't go if you need to eat right away!). Steak, chicken, seafood....all good with your sides of fried rice, veggies, soup, salad, and two special sauces one resembling thousand island meets miso dressing. Good selection of drinks as well. Make sure to make reservations on weekends. Gets very busy! Fun for parties, gatherings, dates, etc. Teppanyaki is a nice experience to also meet new people at your shared teppan grill table. Don't be shy! Great value for the money and they also have a menu for the little ones. Don't expect top end Teppanyaki here. If you want that go to J-town and try out one of the restaurants in the japanese hotels or head to Shibuya at MGM in vegas. read more

Last few times I've been here the wait has been extremely long. Yesterday was the last straw with this location. Made a reservation for a party of 12 for a private area and was told is not available even though I made a reservation a couple days in advance. Our party of 12 was split into 2 tables and the service was absolutely horrible. Everything from the cook not having rice to make fried rice from the waiters taking 20 minutes to come back to table to service us. The old guy (manager) I'm assuming was aware of the whole situation and did absolutely nothing. I was then hit with a automatic service fee when quite frankly they didn't deserve anything. (The waiters) i won't be coming back to this location. I recommend others not to either Pasadena and Long Beach location weren't to bad. read more

I've been here probably 5 or 6 times in the past 10 years. Tonight will be the last. I took my family of 5 and while no all the food was horrible, it was just ok. We'll never be back though, here's why... The "PRIME" "boneless" ribeye. I thought I would splurge on the "prime" ribeye. My wife and kids got the Emperor Steak which is a NY Strip. When there's went on the grill I was impressed with the marbling. Then they put my "PRIME" Ribeye on the grill and it was solid red. It didn't even appear to have a marbled cap. There was ZERO marbling in this steak. Then I went to eat it and it was very chewy, it had silver skin throughout; AND THEN... I just about broke my teeth on the shards of tiny bone fragments. Apparently they don't know how to trim a steak either. It really was awful. The Service They were very busy and I thought they actually did an ok job of moving the crowd through. When our server Bobby got to the grill, he greeted us and the. Began to talk crap about his previous table's guests. Then at the end of the night I asked to see the manager and asked about the steak being PRIME and he assured me that it was USDA Prime, not Choice, not Select but PRIME! The Best! I can assure you 100% that was absolutely not true. I explained how it was very poor quality and that I had to spit out several pieces because I almost broke my teeth on the bone fragments. He didn't even apologize or offer any resolutions. THEN the bill comes and everything was 100% full-price. I was actually surprised. They should have at least given a discount for the inedible steak with bone fragments even if they refuse to tell the truth about the cuts of meat their purchasing. The Facility Honestly, I should have know better. As you look around this place you can quickly tell that they do not take care of it. The parts of the kitchen that you can see are very tattered, the rice bowls were cracked and melted at places, the floors were sticky and the bathrooms were disgusting. I'm surprised the health dept. hasn't shut this place down. If you have a craving, plan ahead, make a reservation at Benihana at the Santa Anita Mall and don't ever go to Tokyo Wako in Arcadia. read more
