I stand by my five stars for Tokyo. This place IMO still has some of the best sushi in the area. After a couple of months of eating sub par sushi at other places around central Ohio... I ventured here once more on a Saturday and realized what I had been missing. Tears almost came to my eyes realizing what a fool I had been. It was like realizing you had cheated on the love of your life. Ok, so I didn't really cry. I'm not THAT obsessed. This is a REALLY great sushi place. I'm not exaggerating. Every roll has great flavor. The fish is fresh. I have seen the chefs bring the fish out to the table to show patrons the freshness. They're good on standing their ground about freshness and they have a valid point every time and can prove they don't use bunk fish. Seriously, these guys are great. They are one of the only places in Central Ohio that make one of the freshest Rainbow Rolls I've ever had. Their spicy yellow tail rolls are AMAZING. We tried the Christmas Roll on our last visit after have a very crappy version at another sushi joint, and theirs was SPECTACULAR. My husband was greedy on that roll and ate most of it, because it was that awesome. Tokyo is still not a place of massive presentation... nor is it good for massive parties, but it still wins my award for the best sushi in central Ohio. No fancy lights, or gimicks here... No cheap out groupons deals, or other items to make them cheapen their quality in order to feed the masses. The best part is that it is a mere hop and skip from my place. Oh yeah, people. It's good. My word of advice is to just not go expecting high ambiance, but if you're looking for a low-key date night with no frivolous qualities, or hell... even just a good dinner, then stop by. read more

Decent, reasonably priced sushi in Powell. I honestly didn't think it was possible. If you're looking for perfect lighting, koi, and ambience of snooty overpriced sushi bar where you have to drive the right car in order to fit in...this ain't it. However, if you want good quality sushi that is presented very nicely and tastes very good: You're in luck. I personally could do without the LCD screens mounted to the walls like a sports bar, but other than that it is very nice. It is zero pretension. That's a rare commodity for the sushi crowd. I may have just put a nail in their coffin, as I assume that most people who go to sushi bars are all about the pretension. This is my favorite sushi place in Columbus. Mostly because it's minutes from my house. Also because of the lack of pretension. It is simple but clean and nicely decorated. It is very "mom and pop", but I tend to gravitate away from "plastic" corporate decor as well as "your sushi will cost twice as much because we have to pay for all this stuff we imported from Kyoto" pretension. OK...enough snob bashing. Good sushi. Fair (dare I say, inexpensive) price. Nice presentation. In a strip mall. If you want good sushi in Powell...eat here. I recommend the rainbow or any of the tempura-style rolls (battered on the outside of the seaweed.) There is a cheap eel-based roll that I love, too. Try them all! I ate here March 13th with a friend from out of town, fairly certain we'd be happy based on all the reviews I'd read here. Wow. What a major disappointment. We arrived about 1:00 or so, after the lunch rush, and the lone waitress seemed slightly put out that we were there. Not a big deal; we got seated promptly and were given menus. It took awhile to get our water served and our orders taken, but again, we chalked it up to the after-lunch let-down. The real spoiler was when my dining partner needed a refill on her water. We waited, waited, waited ... nothing. She kept trying to catch the waitress's eye, but the waitress seemed determined NOT to see her, taking care of paperwork or something up at the front by the register, strolling back to the kitchen, straightening things back at the register, checking with the other four tables that had guests ... Finally in desperation my lunch partner got up, walked to the register with her glass and asked for more water. The waitress said, "Yes. Wait. Go sit down." A couple of minutes later she came over with three glasses of water and literally SLAMMED them down on the table - so hard they splashed. The food was okay but definitely nothing to write home about, and nowhere near good enough to endure that kind of treatment again. I will not be back. And I'm really bummed about that because I need regular sushi fixes, and Tokyo Sushi is close to home. It's a shame. read more

No thrills but inexpensive, friendly service, and good sushi. We came in on Saturday afternoon and there was not a person in here, which worked to our advantage because the waitress turned one of the flat screens to cartoons to entertain our daugter. The serving of seaweed salad was at least 2x the normal serving size and was delicious. We were provided enough plates to share it. If I mention this is in a strip mall, I feel like I'm being redundant when it comes to Columbus dining. We really shouldn't be shocked when something rises above the level of mediocre sub shop just because it's in a strip mall location. Anywaywho, Tokyo Sushi is a charming sushi joint that will more than satisfy your sushi cravings. I won't call it the best I've had in Columbus (heya, Akai Hana!), but it's more than decent with speedy service and one of the cheaper sushi menus in town. I'll also swear up and down that you get the same portions of fish but less rice...so less "sushi bloat" when the evening is done. The miso soup was actually quite full of....wait for it...miso! No mere dusting, this was a hearty miso-intensive soup. Even when it comes to their ginger dressing on the salad there are major points as the dressing is a) not orange & b) filled with recognizable ginger. Husband and I split the sushi/sashimi for two platter. 16 pieces of sashimi, 12 pieces of sushi, 1 rainbow roll...and what I believe ended up being 1 modified California roll (the online menu advertises 1 spicy tuna roll - and it didn't seem spicy or tuna-ish at all...and had flying fish roe on it?). $45 for the lot with soup or salad. The sashimi was cut a bit unevenly in parts, but still was good and included shredded daikon beds. Most of the sushi were straightforward cuts (and no tamago to benchmark) with the disappointing fake crab "sushi." Thankfully, their peppered tuna piece complete with "crunchies" more than made up for that piece. Rolls were both good representations. Some downsides. Despite having my favorite appetizer on the menu - hamachi kama - they were "out" at 7:30 on a Friday. I've been down this road a few times with sushi places here in town. Often, it's an off-menu item because availability gets dicey (a single fish only has two to offer!). So if you're going to list it, you're saying that you have it regularly and being out just makes me sad. Downside 2 - when our platter was brought out, no attmpt to go over the fish was ever made. It was assumed that we knew all of our sushi and sashimi by sight. As long as I've been eating the stuff, even now, I often don't know many of the fish until I taste them. And even then it's, "oh, that white sweetish one I like." This would have been a good time to explain the spicy tuna roll mystery. Minor downside 3 - I have no idea who our real server was. Two different people were involved in order taking and while they appeared in serving and "how's everything?" moments, two more people showed up to serve and offer more and ask how things were. We guessed wrong on who would bring us the check. The place can seat maybe 30 people....this just seemed a bit confused. This is a bit of a drive for us, but it is a nice night. They don't have a liquor license, but it is BYOB if you're inclined. One last note the owners can't help but patrons may want to know...the joint is small. So when you're having that double-date where you and the other couple are trying to prove to the other that your relationship us best in a loud-ish passive-aggressive tone...the rest of us can hear you. And you're no where near as awesome as you think you sound (bonus entertainment!). read more

Since my last review the place is under new management/ownership. The family unit that used to be here are gone and the new people just don't have it going on IMO. They now offer liquor and have some pretty decent happy hour prices but the food just doesn't taste as good. The rice on the rolls was falling apart, the ginger dressing on our salads was so watery it left a big puddle in the bottom of our bowls, and our server didn't even bring us part of our order. We thought they were still working on it so we didn't ask until we realized it wasn't coming at all so we just said skip it. Not likely to return. read more

Amazing food! I love authentic Japanese food and korean food. I love checking out new Asian restaurants and I decided to eat there when I saw that the owner and menu had changed to offer lunch bentos. I've eaten here three times in the last week because of the great tasting food. The atmosphere is very relaxed and easy to enjoy the experience and the servers are friendly. I highly recommend the bentos for lunch, Shumai and the tempura is amazing(both shrimp tempura and the vegetable tempura). I'm going to make sure I bring all of my friends there and make as many trips there as I can. read more

Powell has long needed a reliably decent sushi restaurant. My experience at Tokyo Sushi yesterday has given me renewed hope. As others have recently noted, this establishment is now under new ownership. When I walked in I was impressed by the enthusiasm of the host and appreciated the time he took to show me the updated sushi menu and share some recommendations. I took my food to go, so can't speak to the table service. I ordered edamame (it was still piping hot after my short 5 min drive home), a simple spicy tuna roll (my basic test for a future go/no go decision...it was a "go"); and the Playboy specialty roll: shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, topped with salmon, avocado and and drizzled with trio sauce. Delicious. They also threw in a gratis bowl of Miso soup. I'm not usually a big fan of miso, but my kids are and it was gone moments after I gave it to them. Wish I could get the rest of the family to also be sushi eaters so I can come back and try a wider variety of rolls en mass! As it stands, I will for sure come back and sample different rolls over time. I really hope this place does well and becomes the clear "go to" for sushi in the area - they are off to a good start! Oh, I was also intrigued by other new menu offerings: Korean dishes, bento boxes and other Japanese dishes -- and they are now also open for lunch! read more

Decided to go to Tokyo sushi tonight with my wife. When we got there we were greeted by a sign board that said it was under new ownership and had a new menu. The restaurant still looks the same on the inside and that isn't a bad thing at all. We were cheerfully greeted by the server and again were informed that the restaurant was under new ownership. There are 2 menus now, one for sushi and one for entrees and appetizers. There are new Korean entrees on the menu that look fantastic. The sushi menu is separated by price and comes with a dry erase marker to make your choices. The wife ordered beef teriyaki and a salad with ginger dressing. The salad was fresh and the ginger dressing was wonderful and refreshing. The beef teriyaki came out on a sizzling plate on a bed of onions, mushrooms , and peppers looking like Japanese fajitas. The beef was juicy and tender, the vegetables were all cooked well and everything had a very nice teriyaki flavor. I ordered a caterpillar roll, spicy tuna roll, tuna roll, a yellow tail roll, and miso soup. The miso soup came out first and was hot and exactly what you'd expect with miso soup, salty, miso-y, and delicious. The sushi came on a nice platter and everything looked very fresh. The tuna and yellowtail rolls were among the freshest and cleanest tasting that I've ever had, the caterpillar roll did not disappoint either, the shrimp and eel interior and avocado on the outside drizzled in eel sauce. The eel sauce was salty, sweet and oh-so-good. The spicy tuna was the star here. They need to rename it the SPICY tuna. It was definitely an 8 or so on the heat scale but had a wonderful peppery flavor and was a nice change of pace from the typical spicy tuna standard. Best of all there was no tempura flake filler in the spicy roll. Excitingly, we learned that under the new ownership, the restaurant will be open daily for lunch with an extensive bento box menu. We've had a hard time finding a good bento box lunch and we're excited to try theirs 5/5 rating for service and the food, the chef and server we're both extremely polite and were proud of what they were doing, as they should be. Ever since my wife and I moved back to Columbus from the Chicagoland area, we've been looking for a sushi restaurant to rival our favorite place there (Kansaku, in Evanston). After about 6 months of trying a new sushi restaurant about once a month, we finally tried Tokyo Sushi and found our place. Our typical measure of a good sushi place is based off of their seaweed salad and the specialty rolls they have. While we've tried a lot of other stuff at many restaurants, these are what we really find we love having when we go out for sushi. The seaweed salad is a generous portion, and is the first one that I've ever seen served with a ring of spicy mayo around it. I tried it, and found that with a little in each bite, I actually even liked the seaweed salad more than I usually do. My wife was sold on the salad after one bite, and she's very picky too. As far as rolls go, we chose the Pink Lady (which we didn't actually see on the menu, but asked the server about), the Star roll, and the Eel Special roll. All three were amazing, had a perfect balance of flavor and texture. We liked them so much, we even ordered a fourth roll (something we usually don't do) since we were so excited. The New York roll also did not disappoint. All of these rolls were very nicely sized as well, as I find that many places these days try to go with larger rolls that really don't seem to be in the spirit of sushi (as well as make it harder to balance flavor easily... and to eat too!). The service was excellent, though admittedly we were the only people in the restaurant at the time. The server seemed to know exactly when we'd need something, and didn't bother us otherwise. They also timed the arrival of the sushi until after we were done with our salad, which was quite nice. And the best part is that we probably would have paid an additional $10-15 for the meal were we getting this back in Chicago. So we're very pleased. All in all, we're definitely going back. WOW! Very fresh fish and tasty. I had sushimi, my wife had sushi and my son had the don katsu and baked eel. We also had some of the specialty rolls. It was surprisingly good and some of the freshest fish I have had outside of high end restaurant in LA, New York, Seattle and Denver. The prices are extremely reasonable and the portions are big. The best part is that it is a family run business. The sushi chef is the owner and his wife is the hostess, and his sons clear tables and take orders - they are a hard working Asian family. My parents had a restaurant and it takes everyone working together for it to run and you don't see many truly family run restaurants these days. I was skeptical of the place but friends highly recommended it. I talked to the owner, who is the sushi chef . He just bought the business so he is the new owner since May. He trained for nearly 20 years in high-end sushi restaurants before going out on his own. He recommended the stuffed avocado as an appetizer. Phenomenal avocado creaminess garnished with fresh sprouts, spicy tuna and a homemade sweet soy sauce. You definitely have to try it. All the sauces are made from scratch and the chef prides himself on using quality ingredients - the freshest fish and greens, quality rice and unique creations. Next time we had bi bimpap and naemyung. It was authentic Korean. It only seats 42 and it does get busy. Also, since it is family run, being patient helps - this is not fast food McDonald's. read more

I am very picky about sushi. There are only 3 places in the Columbus area that I will eat it. This is by far the cleanest and most fresh tasting sushi I have found. As, far as bad service goes, that has never been a problem. The service has always been excellent. There are never very many customers dining inside, but there's always a steady stream of carry-out clients. Because the place is small, maybe one of the reasons people don't dine in; however it is decorated pretty and doesn't seem like just a takeout place. read more

Went in today to see the place under the new management and it looked very nice! The staff was very very friendly and the food was great. They really know how to make things spicy!! I ordered the spicy sashimi appetizer and everything tasted fresh and was presented beautifully! My roll was tasty and filling. My friend ordered a California Roll, Fried rice, and Spring rolls and all were very tasty and arrived quickly. Presentation is definitely not lacking here! I'd recommend trying it out for sure! The bad: A less than stellar server who was nice but a little flighty. DON'T order the calamari, It's like a great steakhouse serving chicken nuggets. I have no idea why it's on their menu. It's rubbery and below the standard of this wonderful establishment. The good: everything else. All of their sushi is masterfully prepared and absolutely mouth watering delicious. The food is good. Fresh, tasty... pretty much what you want in sushi. The service was exceptional. We aren't a big sushi family... I like it but the other adults aren't the most adventurous. Oddly the kids, 9 and 5, were really high on giving it a try. The staff at Tokyo Sushi listened to what my wife didn't like about sushi (mostly that she didn't like "fishy" fish and didn't care for avocado) and modified one of their standard rolls into something she really, really liked. The boys and I had traditional sushi, and the waitresses recommendations were spot on. The atmosphere was unassuming: a strip mall location surrounded by some mediocre restaurants (avoid the Chinese place in the same strip). I entered the place not expecting much, and walked away very pleasantly surprised. Can't really comment on price... I don't eat sushi often enough to know if it was a good price or bad. $92 (before tip) for 12 assorted pieces of sushi, 3 generic rolls, 2 "specialty" rolls, 3 cokes and 2 bubble sodas (the kids loved those). Looked forever for a good Asian and sushi place north of Columbus and until we just tried Tokyo sushi we hadn't found it yet. We had extremely flavorful take out during these covid times! It's great to have this in the neighborhood! The playboy, playgirl, mean green, mile high and spicy jumbo rolls were fresh, well made and sauces had perfect amount of umami blast. Another favorite was the short rib which was the most tender, roll your eyes in the back of your head bites I've had in a while. When I went to pick up the chef (and owner I take it) obviously took pride in creating each dish and was hustling! Great service at the front. We'll be back. read more

After reading the reviews I hesitated, but decided to try it anyway. My favorite restaurant in Columbus is Akai Hana and I wanted to try something in Powell. I thought the restaurant was clean and the staff was quite nice. The sushi was quite good. I don't order rolls at sushi restaurants, because they remind me of grocery store sushi. I ordered the chirashi and I was pleasantly pleased. I thought it was a good price for the portion. I think some of the poor reviews for this restaurant are wrong and it is worth giving Tokyo a try. read more

I can appreciate it if those that say this place is a family run business owned by a nice family are telling the truth, but my second experience here, and my last, was abysmal and my first wasn't very good either. No apologies, the sushi here is poor. We ordered a variety of rolls and nigiri. The rice was not short grain rice as it should have been for sushi. At best it was medium grain, maybe even something else. It was overly vinegared and soggy. The rice balls that came with the nigiri slices were about the size of sugar cubes, maybe slightly larger, about 25-30% the size they should have been. Fish slices were small and paper thin. Fish either tasted of nothing or tasted 'off''. Rolls with unagi had so little unagi in them that you could barely see it as an ingredient and couldn't taste it at all. The tuna in the tekka maki was so poor quality that neither my wife nor I could finish eating it. We ordered teriyaki chicken for a youngster and it came out skinless, pan fried to driest meat I have had in ages ( then apparently reheated in a icrowave when we ordered it as it seemed almost precooked) and with a sauce tha thad no flavor. On top of this it was soooo hot in the restaurant because they had the Ac turned off that I had to go out three times during the wait for dinner to cool off outside and it was 82 degrees and muggy that day. They did turn the AC on for about 5 minutes after I left the third time (or it went on automatically once it hit 95 inside? no kidding, it was THAT hot) Ourt first experience there about a year ago was no better. If you think this place has good sushi, then treat yourself and go anywhere else. Basho, Akai Hana, the take out at Tensuke Market...heck even takeout at Kroger and the sushi at Tanuki are a clear cut above what we had. read more

I have always ordered Tokyo Sushi through Cafe Courier, and it was always very good. This time I finally went in for their lunch special. Took about ten to fifteen minutes before my existence was acknowledged and the place had only two other tables occupied. Took another ten to fifteen minutes just to get my water. The sushi was good, which is why they're getting two stars, but I will never go back due to the lack of service. Extremely poor service. read more

We've been going to Tokyo Sushi since it opened and usually find it to be a great place to eat. Normally we eat in the restaurant, but lately with our crazy schedules we've been using Doordash to get our sushi fix and eat at home. Our experience last night was not the first time that we've had issues with take out orders from Tokyo Sushi. I'll start off by saying that for them, Bento Boxes are a lot of work in packaging up all the parts that come in the box so it can be easy to overlook something. For my meal last night, it was the beef teriyaki (the main ingredient) for the bento box that got missed. We called the restaurant to let them know it was missing and instead of apologizing, the person we spoke argued that they had delivered everything, when clearly they hadn't. My daughter drove up to the restaurant to pick up the missing part of the meal and the person there continued to argue with her that they didn't make a mistake. Come on, what kind of service is that? Apologize, hand us a box of meat and maybe a coupon for future purchases and move on. Instead of keeping a loyal customer, we'll be looking at other options in the future. read more
