I can't believe that I never bothered to drive down this side of A Street. I normally go to BGs for brunch so I decided to finally visit this spot. It looks like I've been missing out. Started with their famous cinnamon roll with a latte. Good grief that was wicked delicious. The latte was perfection and that cinnamon roll....just wow. I'm on a quest to try chilaquiles at all the breakfast spots in town so that's what I ordered. I got it with the green salsa. It was honestly THE best chilaquiles I've ever had. Got it with eggs over easy. The rice that comes with it is something else. My niece loved her order of chicken strips. I took a bite of it and it did in fact taste yummy as she had said. Great staff. Today my boss treated me to a birthday lunch @Tomas Cafe. I've always heard about this hidden gem located in downtown Oxnard... But being that it is kind of away from the freeway and deep in the city, I never really found myself in this area..but today was my lucky day! From the outside, the building looks like an old pueblo, which goes with the culture and vibe once your inside the restaurant. The decor is pretty warm and inviting. To the left of the main restaurant, they have a huge banquet room, so if you are planning a small party check this place out. The main restaurant area is pretty average sized so I can see how and why on weekends this place can easily get packed. They have a breakfast menu with multiple options and also a decent lunch menu that includes the common salad, sandwich and burgers. But the breakfast menu is where it's at! What caught our eyes today was the NUTELLA French toast and RED VELVET pancakes! Yum!!! Order these as a combo plate which includes 2 eggs (any style) and either 4 pieces of sausage links or bacon. The sausage link actually taste decent. In the photo posted, the red velvet pancakes is just the half order and I was stuffed with left orders. All in all the food was delicious and reasonably priced. There's a lot of different items to choose from and therefore anyone palate can easily be satisfied. *Only downfall from today's visit was when I got my iced water, there was a piece of plastic in my water. I think it might have been from the ice bag? But still.. Kinda gross. Other than that mishap, our visit today was fine. This has been one of my favorite breakfast spots for years. Always pretty friendly service when placing my order, food is fresh and ready quickly and I've never had a bad thing on the menu. So today when I ordered my go-to favorite, the Smoked Salmon and Baby Spinach Eggs Benedict, I was surprised that it's changed and wasn't good at all. For years here it's been prepared and served as it traditionally is most anywhere using thinly sliced pieces of cured smoked salmon that has a raw-like texture. Today, it came instead with a dry brick of a piece of unseasoned overcooked salmon. The hollandaise sauce may've saved it if it weren't completely bland. There was no salt or seasoning anywhere to be found in the dish. I don't ever add salt to my food but this was so bland I wanted to. It used to be bordering almost too salty but there was nary a salt dash to be found this time. Hopefully this was a new cook or one off mistake or they go back to the old way of preparing this. It tasted like they mixed a bunch of random fruits together and they didn't harmonize well. Everytime I come in and have to deal with her son, Tom it is a bad experience. He doesn't listen to me. Easily dismisses me. Never checks up on the order I'm waiting for. I really don't think I recommend this business. The only upside to this place is my boyfriend really enjoys the Huevos Rancheros so if we're really craving it we'll order here. However I've never had a nice experience with the staff of the maybe 6 times I've visited. Every time they're either hanging out and talking or fiddling with their hands while I stand there patiently for I don't know how long to be acknowledged. Having worked in food service for years, I know what it's like but I never receive a, "I'll be right with you" or a "Welcome, just give me one moment." Then finally when they come up to me they either argue that I didn't place an order or I need to prove I placed an online order or they communicate with multiple people about my order that I'm staring at right in front of me. The food and energy at Tomas Cafe is impecable! My fiancé had the breakfast burrito and I had the breakfast sandwich that included hollandaise sauce. It was like an eggs Benedict only BETTER. The owners of the establishment are very sweet and as mentioned above, bring such good energy to the place. Their service is just unmatchable. The food was delicious! BUT the service was awful, you can spend an entire morning here just waiting for your meal and to pay your tab. It took 30 minutes to get the waitress to take our order, 1 hour to receive our food (mind you, it wasnt busy today there were still open tables and only 1 family waiting to be seated). After we finished eating we asked for out tab, 1 hour later we still didnt receive it, we decided to just go to the counter and pay instead of waiting for a bill that would never come. The woman at the counter was a bit upset we came up and asked to pay since she had to find our tab but hey we have a life too. Yummm! I've heard a lot about this restaurant and finally had a chance to eat lunch here. I believe they're known for breakfast and those huge cinnamon rolls. A new food plan and lifestyle change has got me on a different path, but if I ate there 3 months or so ago, I would have stuffed my face with that cinnamon roll I ordered the hamburger (bunless)and opted for the breakfast potatoes as a side. Wanted to try a couple of bfast spots in Oxnard and this one stood out to me most. I believe the owner was working this morning and he gave us a discount for being first timers! We got the Breakfast Chorizo Burrito, Blueberry Pancake Plate and Chicken Fried Steak. Big portionssss. I was sooo full. I got the green sauce on the side with my burrito and dipping the chips in the sauce was DELISH. Don't know about some reviews mentioning soggy tortilla chips bc I would have ordered more. I ordered the chillaquilles which came with a side of rice and beans and they really didn't pack much flavor which I was expecting in the salsa you can definitely feel that they tone it down to a mild style I got half and half to try both but I recommend the green.The beans needed salt and rice was good. My husband on the other hand got eggs Benedict but after this experience has not eaten them since the ham they provided was not enjoyable what so ever it was a piece of fat incredibly chewy ugh I can't talk about it more besides stay away from the ham. AND they insist on leaving the door wide open to let in all the hot air. Second, it took 30 minutes for them to bring part of our order out. My kids and I recently used our Ventura Axxess card at Tomas Cafe. We were greeted upon walking in and quickly seated. We were a little unsure of what we were hungy for and asked for recommendations. The owner suggested we try the Westerrn Burger & French Toast. HOLY SMOKES!!! They were both FANTASTIC!!! My little one ordered a salad, that she loved. The food was so good that we all picked at each others plates:) You know a restaurant is good when your young children ask when we can go back so they can bring their friends. I'm going to start off by saying 'sorry' but this review is not going to favor the restaurant! First of all I'm reviewing TOMAS CAFE IN OXNARD CALIFORNIA not SF. We have eaten breakfast at Tomas' many times both before and after Covid. Having said that we have eaten at various restaurants throughout the county, so I am comparing them when referencing my issues with Tomas Cafe. When first walking into the restaurant there is no one there to greet you nor are any of the tables 'set up'. Finally when someone does come out to welcome you to their fine establishment we're told that we can view the menu, which is spread out over the counter, and order. After putting in our orders we are told to sit at any table (tables without any napkins or silverware. When our food arrives it is on paper plates, which aren't even pretty, accompanied with plastic forks! My husband will try Mexican breakfast meals as well as traditional plates. I love a country style breakfast with bacon or sausage as I am not a big breakfast person. But I have always told my husband 'how can you screw up a breakfast of bacon and eggs?' Well what does it say about breakfast when all you can compliment are the eggs on your plate? My sausage links were really sad, the potatoes were poorly seasoned and the bell pepper and onion were just thrown on top! The Chile verde my husband ate was just mediocre and the beans and rice needed more flavor. I'm sorry but I missed not having a person come over to ask if 'everything was ok'. As I said we have eaten out many times since the shutdown, also known Covid, and there are plenty of restaurants which are still greeting you as you enter and visiting your table to ensure you have a good experience. One final thought, I would not have left the tip I left when I ordered if I knew I would be as disappointed as I was. Sadly we will not be returning. read more

We didn't see it. The decor is light, bright, and happy. The owner, Tomas, was kind. His mother, in curlers, was the cashier. She seemed a little confused about redeeming an expired Groupon.
