This place is my new favorite Thai place around Mountain View. Reasonable prices and good tasting food always makes me happy. When driving on El Camino, this place is easy to miss, but if you see it and don't have time to turn into the parking lot, you can park on the street right behind it. My two favorite dishes here are the pad see ew and pineapple fried rice. The pineapple fried rice comes in a pineapple! I love the presentation and the amount of food that fits into that pineapple is amazing. The pad see ew comes with plenty of noodles, which will be enough for dinner. The noodles are chewy and the chicken has never been dry. The thai iced tea starts off quite sweet since I think they factor in the ice melting. Once the ice starts to melt, the iced tea is much more enjoyable. They also have a large TV here, but they need to do something about the sound since you can only hear it if you sit directly next to the TV. read more

Tommy Thai never disappoints! Some of the BEST Thai food I have ever had. Came for a lunch on Saturday, and we were served quickly and the food came out in minutes. We ordered Thai Beef Salad, Pad Thai, Tom Kha soup, BBQ Beef and the Massaman Curry. All were very very good. The Tom Kha soup is particularly wonderful. So full of flavor! The chicken and prawns were fresh and juicy. Perfect for leftovers the next day! With food prices getting so expensive, it's great to be served food that actually worth what you pay for it! Ah the rules. Yes those dreaded culinary rules we try to follow. In this case its the multi ethnic cuisine rule....... Rule #8 states: avoid multi ethnic cuisine restaurants at all costs. In the case of Tommy Thai, we were really on the fence and not wanting to drive to Oakland to a dedicated Cambodian eatery we rolled the dice. You see this combination a lot (Thai/Cambodian) but it never seems to deliver either well. The cuisine seems similar on the surface, but most places are unable to deliver at a high level. Sadly such is the case for TT. First off the service was quick and friendly. They did forget our Pad Thai but it was fixed promptly and while it is a small space, it was nicely decorated, clean, and most importantly for yelp it had Unisex bathrooms! The service is the reason why we did not hang a 2 star on them. The food: Chicken Satay: It was 4 really big skewers. The peanut sauce was okay (a bit gummy) but the meat was under-seasoned and it was not cut on the bias so it was really chewy. The gummy peanut sauce was served with really good pickled cucumbers and onion. However, it was a teeny tiny portion and I could have used like 5 times that amount. So we messed up a bit and basically ordered two of the same salad ( I know, I was too busy taking that picture of the unisex bathroom sign and missed what my wife had ordered) : The Cambodian Salad and the Beef Cambodian salad: First of the anchovy/lime dressing was fantastic. Tart, sour, salty and that killer unami taste only an anchovy can deliver. After that though it fell flat. The green papaya was good, and the dish looked impressively big when it hit the table. Once we dug in however, it became apparent that underneath the papaya, was mesculin greens and iceberg lettuce. The lettuce could not hold up to the dressing and wilted pretty quickly. The beef (not sure if they ceviched it?) while tender and gristle free had a off taste and texture to it. The other issue was with the heat: I don't know if the server made a judgment that I was joking about the heat level, but I asked for an 8 out of 10 and it was about as hot as say green tabasco. Not that hot. Pad Thai: It was just okay. The sauce tasted like it was from a can and the noodles were on the slimy side. It was a plate of food, no more no less. Thai Iced Tea: Really good! Creamy and you could just taste the turmeric. I would order this one again and again. Perhaps we should hold fast on the rules....... read more

What has happened to Tommy Thai? Do they have a different Chef? They keep making major errors on phone orders. We asked for everything vegetarian with tofu and veggies repeatedly saying that everything should be vegetarian. First time I received Tom Kha soup with Chicken (note they did give me a replacement soup later on) but then today for my friend's birthday we had a substantial order, they gave chicken fresh rolls instead of tofu. The fresh rolls are so bland now just lettuce and the protein component. Giving us chicken fresh rolls instead of the tofu caused so much stress and chaos at the dinner party where everyone was strictly vegetarian and vegan. They were Jains and have taken vows and You could not see it was Chicken initially. Luckily no one had an allergy. Feel so sad. Also the stir fry vegetable dishes were so watery and oily. The curry dishes were bland. We use to always order the curries at spice level 4 and now there is a guy at Tommy Thai who was so rude and said that all the curries are medium spicy regardless. I got the Cambodian noodle soup and the pineapple fried rice and both were amazing. The Cambodian noodle soup was absolutely phenomenal. The broth was so tasty and it was a cool transparent! There were so many veggies and so many noodles which I loved! Everything was perfectly cooked and so was my tofu as well. The pineapple fried rice was also amazing. There was barely any pineapple, but the rice was so flavorful and still had loads of everything else like veggies, cashews, and protein which I loved! It was really tasty and there were a couple of crispy rice which was a cherry on top! The portions were really large so expect leftovers. Poor customer service. While the papaya salad was better than the others, it tasted more like a typical salad, without any Thai flavor. I consider myself pretty discerning with Thai food and their Crispy Rock Cod (CS14) is one of the best takeout fish dishes I have had - full stop. Moist fish, crisp and crunchy light batter without any sogginess, the Tamarind sauce was light with a subtle sweetness. Absolutely fantastic. Panang curry was great, pineapple fried rice also very good and the roti good. We ordered with our children eating and the spice levels were perfectly lowered without tasting watered down or not having good taste. Next time will order more traditional dishes and increase the spice levels on an order not for the kids. I also thought the service was fantastic. When ordering I mentioned it was our first time and got great customer care with recommendations for what to order and it was wonderful guidance.
