Good BBQ is hard to find We found Tommy's because Yelp to the rescue... or d I thought. Many reviews were incredibly enthusiastic about the food, and for all of us foodies, that's pretty much all that it usually takes. The customer Service is absolutely a huge plus to this establishment. The people that work there are incredibly nice and very welcoming, and for that they absolutely should be commended. We decided to order the three meat and two sides plate because it was too late for lunch and too early for dinner and it was a good compromise For the three proteins, we selected brisket, beef link, which was recommended by the staff, and the pulled pork. There were two slices of brisket and the brisket, lacked seasoning, and was dry and overcooked. The pulled pork while there was seemingly a generous amount, it too, was very dry, locked any real flavor, and it just was sad. The beef link, which I was looking forward to was also overcooked, and just wasn't good. It had a rather odd texture and taste to it, and I also thought it was strange that they had pre-sliced the length for us. There's something magical about biting or cutting into a link and enjoying that first bite that breaks crispy skin as you bite into it. The mac & cheese was the showstopper! It was creamy, cheesy, and really tasty! The baked beans I'm not even sure what to say about them. They weren't sweet, they weren't tangy, they were just sad. We tried to enjoy them, but it was virtually impossible. I understand that Hercules is not known for BBQ, but that doesn't mean that it cannot exist. Hopefully Tommy's will step up their game. Since this was my first visit, I have no way of knowing if things used to be better and now aren't, or if this is just standard.

Ordering is super simple, we ordered online, arrived during the estimated window it would be done. The interior has a good sized seating area, but it seems like a lot of people just pick up to go. We were in and out pretty quickly. The food was really really good, brisket was the perfect tenderness, pulled pork was great, sides complimented the meats well. The bbq sauce was probably the best I've tasted, I'm normally not a fan of bbq sauce either. The mac and cheese was my favorite side by far. The spread of food was amazing, felt like it was priced on the higher end but didn't mind due to the food being so good and meat was cooked to perfection. Highly recommend, will be back forsure!

I'm still loving the eats at Tommy's. I just wish good bbq didn't cost and arm & a leg! Got the 2 meats / 2 sides plates. Ribs & brisket still delicious! Cole slaw & mac and cheese! I forgot to ask for my sauce on the side. Oops! Service was really good. My tray was brought to me..thank you! It was really loud in here with the guys in the dining area doing what they do. But after they left, you could hear the music etc.

YOWZA--this was excellent. Mouthwatering brisket. Delicious jalapeño cheddar links. Baked beans and mac and cheese. Devoured it so quickly it felt like a figment of my imagination when I was suddenly craving it all over again a couple hours later. Keep up the good work! Will be back.

Ordered the two-way plate with brisket and beef links, along with baked beans and potato salad. The meat was tender, but overall the brisket lacked a bit of flavor. The beef links were better seasoned, though slightly on the dry side. The barbecue sauce was okay but leaned less sweet than I prefer. The plate comes with a slice of white bread, which is great for dipping into the sauce. The baked beans were well flavored and tender, and the potato salad was nice and thick -- probably my favorite part of the plate. My daughter ordered the single smashburger with bacon and said it was juicy and very flavorful. They offer a good variety of meats and also have dessert options. While some items stood out more than others, it's a solid spot with options worth trying.

DELICIOUS BBQ - Tommy's is a welcome addition to Hercules . We have tried both the ribs and the brisket and definitely love the ribs more . We also get the greens every time and they are so good . Mac and cheese wasn't as good and haven't had it since . Their prices are quite high but the good quality is also superb. They have other options and look forward to trying them out lots of seating and parking is plentiful . They only open from Wednesday to Sunday !! Worth the visit .

I decided to order Tommy BBQ on a Saturday night after hearing about this place so many times; I'm glad that I was able to finally give it a shot. Normally, I'm a little bit wary of anywhere that puts their sauce on directly on top of the barbecue. But I quickly found out that the sauce was not hiding the barbecue. The brisket that I ordered was very tender and had the perfect amount of smoke on it. The amount of brisket that they gave was enough to last me two meals! What was surprising was that the sides were just as good as the BBQ, I was very impressed by both the mac n cheese and bbq beans. The mac and cheese reminded me of a should food plate and the bbq beans were very well seasoned and could easily be a meal itself. I'm glad to have a great bbq place in the area and will be back soon!

Good food... Friendly Staff ... You can't ask for anything better.. The greens have just as much meat in them then a half of rib. My husband's favorite side dish is the potato salad and beans. I guess you really can't go wrong.

Hubby loves barbecue and I'm basing this review on that. The ribs are fall off the bone tender, the chicken is good, and he likes the brisket. We especially like the fact that they offer collard greens as one of the sides. Portions are decent, you are well fed here. Service is very good, always with a smile and friendly. They're happy to accommodate you if you would like all dark meat for your chicken. This restaurant is on the small side, but there's plenty of room at the tables. Hubby thinks they do a good job on the barbecue so we will come again.

Potato salad drenched in bbq sauce when meat didn't even have bbq sauce on it

Went back to get BBQ since I was in the area. Disappointed they don't have the brisket tacos.. that needs to come back. We tried the smash burger and a 2-way. Food was ok but super disappointing to find my potato salad literally drenched in BBQ sauce. I tried to eat it anywat but it didn't work it was just all messed up. I don't know why there was bbq sauce since they gave us a tub on the side. Epic fail today to detail and attention. I guess for future ask potato salad on the side.

Was meeting my friend for dinner and he suggested this place to go to. I am always down for BBQ, so I decided to give this place a try. Ordering is simple, you ask for what style of food you want (plate or sandwich or something else) and you choose your protein and side. I went with two meats of Chicken and Brisket, with Mac and Cheese and Coleslaw as my side and a drink. 2 meat plate: The brisket was very tender and juicy. The right amount of sauce and seasoning was perfect for me. The chicken was also big as well. It was like eating a half whole chicken and the seasoning was a bit salty on this one. The Cole slaw was crispy and refreshing and the Mac and cheese was good. The slice of bread was also a nice touch. Overall, a nice dinner with my friend, although very pricey for what I paid (close to $30). Still, I enjoyed my meal and would come back again.

I like my bbq chicken marinated in the sauce with the flavours going in more than skin deep. However, it looked and tasted like the bbq sauce was simply poured on the chicken thighs, instead of being cooked in it. I am not sure what the dry rub was but I didn't spy or taste any signs of the bbq flavour permeate into the flesh. It all boils down to personal preferences -- I like mine sticky with the sauce well coated and permeated, but *not* runny. The bbq beans were pretty good but the next time I would pick a different side as bbq-on-bbq was a little much for me; perhaps potato salad or a coleslaw. The second side of mac-n-cheese, in my opinion, was much more complimentary and complementary to the meat. (It's not obvious in the photo but the sauce was only skin deep) It was initially a little confusing as the only menu available at the entrance was for "Brezos." It wasn't until a staff told me that Tommy's is "to the right, at the far corner." Service is really quick as everything is ready; they will hand you your selection in a minute or so right at the counter. There are plenty of seating inside and out --- a really long community table with, maybe, 15+ chairs, as well as multiple picnic-style benches that were shaded or sun-soaked. read more

We got the 3-way plate with brisket, ribs, and chicken. All were super flavorful. Smoke was on point and meats were all tender!! We also got potatoe salad, beans, and coleslaw. All were very good. A good amount of food - enough for two people with leftovers. Price was good also. Will definitely go back again!!! read more

Some of the best bbq in the Bay Area! We went during lunchtime and it was not ridiculously crowded as one other poster indicated. The portions are very generous - I'm a brisket snob and this place did not disappoint! The young man at the counter was very helpful and excellent customer service skills. 1st: ordered brisket and ribs; potato salad and beans. Received brisket and sausage, potato salad and beans. Also forgot (until it was too late) to ask for sauce on the side (big mistake). The brisket was over cooked (soft) and didn't carry a lot of flavor. Sauce overpowered it. The sausage (homemade) was pretty good except it was drowning in sauce. Had a small bit of late heat which was nice. The beans were good. Spicy. The potato salad was, well, just not good. Tasted like the stuff that comes in 5 gallon buckets from Sysco. Long story short: was craving BBQ and was disappointed, for the most part. read more

I have YET to find a BBQ spot in the bay that wows me. This was good bye heard a lot about the place having high hopes. I got there maybe a little too late and they ran out of chicken and beef links. But the brisket was cool, had some smoked dry ends, same with the ribs. Sides were mid. Overall good, outdoor and inside seating at the assembly with water views is super chill on a hot day. We were checking out the Rosie the Riveter museum when we smelled the smells of some 'que going on so y'all know we had to check it out! Tommy's BBQ is located inside the Assemble Marketplace with a few other restaurants. There's seating inside and outside with great views. I am a dry rub type of gal and I believe that real good bbq doesn't need any sauce. Unfortunately, the brisket had way too much bbq sauce. Had I known it would've been slathered all over the brisket, I would've asked for it on the side. The brisket had so much potential. It fell apart perfectly but I couldn't taste the flavors of the bark or seasonings since it was overpowered by the sauce. I really like the potato salad and my partner's garlic and butter corn was delicious. The mac and cheese wasn't my favorite. I'm definitely giving this place another try though since it's so hard to find good bbq in CA for a decent price. read more

We went to Tommy's for barbecue to celebrate Terri's 30th birthday. Her father was eating barbecue when she was born. He continues to say I'm jealous he got to eat barbecue that day. Tommy's is located in Richmond near the Rosie the riveter museum. There is lots of parking nearby and can be accessed from the Bay Trail. It is located in the old Ford warehouse along with a full bar and a couple of other Food vendors. As you would expect, the selection is limited: ribs, hot links, brisket and pulled pork. There are about half a dozen sides, including coleslaw, barbecued beans, mac & cheese, buttery garlic corn to name a few. You have your choice of one, two or three meat selections. I chose the ribs, corn and coleslaw the meat was tender and flavorful. The corn was not soggy. The coleslaw was well dressed and still had crunch. If you're in the area and looking for lunch, Tommy's is a great option read more

I'm originally from San Francisco. Only here for a visit. My good friends recommended "Tommy's" for bbq. I purchased a variety of items. First impression... beautiful person taking my order from the speaker of my cellphone in real-time from the people who sent me. She got everything right. After placing my order I wandered over to the bar and had a few shots of tequila. Too soon my order arrived and I was on my way. I ordered brisket... it was tender,tasty. Smokin' terrific. Saw referrals on Nextdoor about how good the BBQ was & they were not lying. I got the 2-way ribs n brisket & it was excellent. The meat is seasoned perfect & so tender just melts in your mouth. The ribs are meaty & long in size w/generous brisket slices. The sides were delicious and the sauce was absolutely the best tasting & topped it off and complimented the meal. read more

We ordered a Brisket and 2 racks of ribs for a small 4th of July bbq at the house (I didn't feel like smoking a Brisket and ribs nor cooking this year ) and I gotta say! Tommy's Brisket and Ribs are some of the best I've ever had! His homemade BBQ sauce is also hella good! Much better than the other bbq spot we got here in Herc! Do yourself a favor if you are a BBQ lover this is the spot! And Tommy is a real good dude! Such great service and food. This is my new go to BBQ spot. Don't gotta go outta town no more! Best bbq in the bay! Everything is super flavorful. The bbq baked beans are just that not just pork and beans from a can, the links are hand rolled, and the ribs are smoked to perfection. first time trying it today I got a two way brisket and ribs both meats very flavorful smoke very well. The brisket had a lot of fat on it. Other than that. It was good mild barbecue sauce was not mild at all. tasted like regular barbecue sauce the beans they're OK. The potato salad was good. have to come back and try something else. read more

Wow!!! I just had a Grub Hub delivery, the pork ribs are delicious! Arrived nice and hot, the meat super tender and juicy. I chose 2 sides, the coleslaw and beans. Both delicious. Really good brisket, pretty good (and affordable!) beef ribs, and other meats that are mediocre-to-above average. Mac and cheese could use improvement. Baked potatoes are huge and easily a meal within themselves. Bring your appetite and your wallet! One drawback... bbq sauces aren't great. Too sweet, too thin, not spicy enough. read more

What's great is its so close, and that what was formerly Assemble is making a coming back, revamped with cool notion of alcohol and grub collaboration in a historic, and scenic local. Of course featuring East Brothers beer is a plus! Unfortunately the Q was not on Queue. Brisket was over cooked, mealy, lacked texture and the accompanying sauce was too sweet n lacked heat. The pulled pork was great but it tasted too much like the brisket. However Brisket is not easy! The cut of meat, the rub, the sauce, the wood, the heat, cooking time etc are so exacting it straddles a tight window where it's undercooked to over cooked. And no amount of sauce can disguise it irregardless of how yummy that sauce is. Perhaps I'm spoiled by a man and his Horn... This location is totally awesome from the bay trail bikers, to bird watchers, hikers and history buffs alike. (Rosie the riveter museum and the Columbia outlet are nearby. Not to mention the SF bay ferry, and awesome views of Oakland through the city and the golden gate. read more

Southern barbecue is the closest thing we have in the U.S. to Europe's wines or cheeses; drive a hundred miles and the barbecue changes -- John Shelton Reed Here at Tommy's it's good old fashioned Texas bbq right on the Bay in Richmond. It's a great view next to Rosie the Riveters museum. And it's damn fine que too. I had the brisket and pulled pork, perfection both ways, a little spice in the sauce. Sides were solid too, beans plus Mac n cheese. Someday I hope they get an air fryer or something and add fries. I can do without the bread they give you. Took it home and warmed up some pitas. They have East Bros beer and a few wine choices, I paired mine with a Ridge GSM blend (see photo). Part of the soon to be opened Assemble Marketplace. Support Richmond's comeback. Eat and shop local. I purchased two, two ways. One with ribs and brisket with greens and Mac and cheese. One with ribs and beef links with potato salad and baked beans. The ribs were excellent, nice flavor. The brisket was tender. The links were very good. Along with the greens. The few things I didn't like one was the beans. They had no flavor and the potato salad was worse than Safeway salad. With all that I will be back! read more

you have a choice of meats so many to choose from We had hot link , beef link and brisket Bbq Beans and Mac n cheese . Many other sides too fountain drinks 1 size and free refills A huge crowd . Wow wow wow!! I ordered the one meat plate with two sides ribs, mac & cheese, and potato salad. You know good ribs when you can eat them without the sauce so I requested the sauce on the side and can I say this is one of the best ribs I've ever had. I owned a restaurant for 10 years and ours didn't even come close to this. I've been eating ribs my whole life, and I've never had a rib place that the ribs are all one size . No smaller pieces just full size . The Mac was homemade potato salad was good as well. Don't sleep on Tommy's. Great service, food and staff. read more

Great addition to the neighborhood. Got the two meat plate with sausage, brisket, Mac and cheese, and potato salad. Sausage took me back to Texas and my favorite bar b q spot Blacks in Lockhart. It was so good. Brisket had great flavor and was super tender but was a little dry. I didn't see a choice between fatty or lean and this was very lean. The only thing missing from my meal was bread, not the same without it. Mac and Cheese was good and surprisingly so was the potato salad. I usually only like my mom's . Next time I will ask for the sauce on the side. The sauce is good but good bar b q like this does not need it. At least not so much. Staff were super friendly and service was fast. I will definitely be back to give the brisket another chance and try their other items. read more

I ordered the 2 meat combo, ribs & brisket, and I was totally blown away. There was a lot of meat. I couldn't eat it all so I had lots of leftovers. I also ordered collard greens and potato salad. The collard greens tasted just like my Grandma's & the potato salad was great. I'll definitely be eating Tommy's BBQ again! read more

This is my 2nd review about Tommy's . This review is a complete reversal of the review I gave when they first opened. I recommend anyone that loves BBQ that provides excellent service visit this establishment. The ribs fell off the bones and the meat was so tender I couldn't get enough, the chicken was excellent and one of my favorites. The side dishes provided the finishing touches to an excellent dinner. I have yet to personally meet Tommy (communicated with him via social media. He has earned my respect and appreciation for his honesty and integrity. I urge everyone to visit and enjoy this wonderful place to dine!!!!! read more

BBQ was prepared to perfection. We had Beef links, Hot links and ribs, everyone raved about how good their food was. I went specifically for the homemade beef links and I was not disappointed! Service was quick, the restaurant staff were great too. Very nice establishment and ambiance I am definitely giving it a 5 star and I will be returning back for a delicious Memorial Day celebration by ordering all my favorites again!!! read more

Solid 4.5 stars. Meat was soft, tender, juicy, smokey, and flavorful. I got the 3 Meat combo with ribs, brisket, and pulled pork with a side of garlic corn and smoked beans for $32.99. My favorite was the ribs and brisket. The sides are good but can't compare to the meats. The beans are a little firm. I just wished there was a little bit more BBQ sauce on the meat, but that's minor. I wish they served sweet potato. It's a little windy by the bay and parking can be tough, but it's worth it. They're only open Friday through Sunday. I would definitely come back if I'm in the area. read more

Ok my honest opinion I'll start with the good. Good: customer service was incredible from start to finish the manager was really nice and helpful with ordering (I even got to meet the owner Tommy) Brisket was tender and flavorful. Bad: for $22 brisket plate they should probably add one more slice and more of the sides (literally one mouth full of beans) Ugly: the pulled pork was a little dry and the bread was over cooked (my daughter couldn't bite through it) BUT they took responsibility ,apologized , and refunded my money as well as a piece of delicious cheese cake. I left a $5 tip and thanked them for their professionalism. Would I eat here again ABSOLUTELY ,looking forward to my next visit I think I'll dine in because the ambience is amazing with the steampunk look and great view of the bay. Stopped randomly on a Saturday late afternoon as we were in the area - hungry and tired. Looked at Yelp to see what's nearby and saw this spot and said, "why not?!" and we're glad we did. Got the three meat combo platter which was about $38 with tax and tip and everything was delicious! The bbq meats (we got brisket, ribs and hot links) tasted fresh and the sides (corn and mac & cheese) was yummy. Taking off one star for the mac & cheese as I've had better (and expected something better - I have high expectations for a bbq spot!). I went all the way back and they said "we refunded the burrito, it's only served for breakfast" First off the menu does not say this. If it's only served during a certain part of the day THEN SAY IT ON THE MENU. Second, no one thought of letting anyone know it was refunded. Just did and went on about their day of goofing off. The people at the store there couldn't give a flying yahoo when I voiced my displeasure. The last couple times we've been here the service was almost non-existent and the orders are always messed up. And this was the last time. Management will read this and just laugh. They could not care at all. Time for poorly run businesses like this to be done.
