It's great to have a local BBQ place and local business! I really appreciate Tommy's opening in my hood. I shared a 3 way plate with my son: ribs, brisket and pulled pork, Mac and cheese, and corn. The meats were very good. The brisket had a good amount of fat and was tender. It also had great bark on it. Ribs were tender with a nice ring and smoky flavor. The pulled pork had too much sauce. Next time I'll get the sauce on the side. Mac and cheese and the corn was ok. I think they can improve on the sides. I will definitely come here again. They've been here a year and I finally tried them! Gotta be the best BBQ in all the Bay (not that I've tried many). Brisket Sandwich comes on a soft & hardy potato bun with freshly crisp slaw. They pile on the meat that pulls part with just a touch and melts in your mouth. Sauce cup is included and all you need is a drizzle to get the bold flavor. Got a side of potato salad and it's up there in my top 5. We also got the 2 meat combo, Ribs & Brisket, 2 sides, & a slice of bread. The Brisket is cut thick, holds up when picked up, but pulls easily apart. The perfectly rendered fat makes for a moist bite of the best Brisket probably in a 200 mile radius. The ribs are meaty spareribs, tender and plenty smokey. No sauce needed, but definitely makes for an even more irresistible bite! Sides of BBQ beans and mac & cheese were good compliments. The BBQ beans are almost like a chili, but cleaner sauce with a smokey sweet & savory BBQ flavor. I could eat them for a meal on their own, but soon would find myself on the moon. The Mac is more cheddar forward and has a nice ratio between the cheese and pasta. Pictures are unnecessary as you definitely will be getting your fix here! I'm glad I read the owners comment and decided to reconsider giving this place another chance. Much better this time. I ordered the two meat plate: brisket and ribs with beans and greens (I had to give them another try if I was really going to give them another try). Ribs were just a tad bit fatty but I think it was to be expected considering the nice size of the ribs. Not too fatty, but a bit more than I enjoyed. The flavor of the meat was delish, I got the medium sauce! The meat was well seasoned which I enjoyed. My only regret for this order was that I didn't order TWO sides of the beans. The beans have a subtle Smokey and good pepper flavor to them which I also enjoyed. The greens this time did not taste like there was too much vinegar but they lacked a little flavor/seasoning. It was still better tasting than the last time I had them. Overall I would recommend giving it at least a few tries. Service is great, they are always accommodating and pleasant to interact with. read more

The food was delicious compared too other bbq places, it tasted a lot fresher than most. It was my first time going with my family members and we were all pleased! The service was great and fast, they people were attentive which makes a difference. It is a bit on the pricier side but you are getting a big portion of food, depending on your appetite you could even split a plate. read more

Tommy's is the real deal. I love their ribs! Fall off the bone. I eat them without sauce and sooo good! Six very hefty, meaty ribs in a half rack. I deducted a star because it was $30+ for them. I know bbq is expensive, and I have paid for these more than once, but I can get a cheaper version at two other places in town. I've had their loaded potato-huge! I want to try their smash burger next. The guys working here are the best. Just a great crew. Helpful, kind, patient. They make everyone feel welcome. read more

I just ordered a 2-way (Ribs & Brisket) for $33.00. I'd been here before and the ribs were St. Louis "Dinosaur ribs". They were thick and huge. They've moved to a baby back rib and for $33.00 you are better off going to Kinders. It's a better value and better quality. The brisket was full of fat. read more

Call it great marketing but we kept smelling some good bbq smells the entire time we did the space VR experience nearby. Plus we hadn't eaten yet and seemed as good a chance as any to try some richmond bbq. We each got a lunch plate so tried a variety of meats and sides. Everything was tasty! The meats were tender. The sides were southern comfort. My only nit is that the bbq sauce is on the sweet side. And yagurl loves sweets, I will straight up eat spoonfuls of condensed milk. But I felt the sauce was more sweet than it had to be for bbq. Hard to beat the view though. Where else are you gunna find bbq on the waterfront with the San Francisco skyline? read more

They have a great meat selection, of which I've tried and greatly enjoyed the following: ribs, hot links and brisket. They taste good with or without sauce. The sides aren't that impressive, the beans and potato salad are my usual choices. My partner likes the macaroni & cheese, but it's giving Velveta or powder cheese mix more than fresh grated cheese. No star at all! Disgusting, horrible service, deliberately loaded my food with an inordinate amount of fat after I requested, "would you put as little fat as possible," on my mobile order. When I asked if my request was honored a older worker, who I hope was not Tommy, acted like he did not know what I was talking about then he said, "yes we honored your request and cut the fat off ESPECIALLY for you." I noticed the female workers tapping their fingers together, what I later found out was clocking me and rolling their necks like, he told her. When I got home, I found almost a half cup of diced and pieces of fat on my almost $30,00 loaded potato! I started to go back and smear it all over his windows but I don't need that smoke. First off the ribs were some of the meatiest ribs I've had but they had minimal flavor, even with the bbq sauce which was thin. The beef links were good but hard to chew because the casing was so thick and inedible, so remove the casing before eating them. Potato salad had to be store bought. The beans were ok but more of a chili bean as opposed to actual baked beans. The service was top tier but the taste doesn't match the price so I don't think I'll be back. read more

I pre-ordered food from Tommy's BBQ for a family gathering on Saturday. I had only been to Tommy's Barbecue once before and my husband and I really enjoyed the food. When planning for my family gathering, the first place I thought of was Tommy's Barbecue! It was so easy to work with Tommy. I told him what I wanted to order, I.e., beef brisket, hot links and macaroni and cheese for approximately 20-25 people. He worked with my budget and I placed the order for pickup. I live approximately 35 minutes from Hercules but it was worth the travel time. My guests really enjoyed the food!! I am sure they will be visiting the restaurant in the very near future. If I could give Tommy's Barbecue a rating more than 5, I wouldn't hesitate. Tommy's Barbecue is the best kept secret in Hercules. Tommy's is located in the very back near the Craneway. Make sure to check their hours first, they're not open everyday. Keep in mind this is Texas style BBQ, so a big focus is on the dry rub and not marinating your food in the sauce. The meat was cooked perfectly! In particular the brisket was on point. What I really liked is there was hardly any fat. Each slice damn near tasted like a burnt end. I've had A LOT BBQ and let me say, this was one of the best queed chicken I've ever had. Incredibly juicy, again not a lot of fat and was falling off the bone. The links compliment the first two, but if you were only going to get a one plate, then it would HAVE to be the brisket. I'm definitely coming back and trying the ribs, but for now, I can't say. The sauce and sides were average. I like my bbq chicken marinated in the sauce with the flavours going in more than skin deep. However, it looked and tasted like the bbq sauce was simply poured on the chicken thighs, instead of being cooked in it. I am not sure what the dry rub was but I didn't spy or taste any signs of the bbq flavour permeate into the flesh. It all boils down to personal preferences -- I like mine sticky with the sauce well coated and permeated, but *not* runny. The bbq beans were pretty good but the next time I would pick a different side as bbq-on-bbq was a little much for me; perhaps potato salad or a coleslaw. The second side of mac-n-cheese, in my opinion, was much more complimentary and complementary to the meat. (It's not obvious in the photo but the sauce was only skin deep) It was initially a little confusing as the only menu available at the entrance was for "Brezos." It wasn't until a staff told me that Tommy's is "to the right, at the far corner." Service is really quick as everything is ready; they will hand you your selection in a minute or so right at the counter. There are plenty of seating inside and out --- a really long community table with, maybe, 15+ chairs, as well as multiple picnic-style benches that were shaded or sun-soaked. read more

Tommy's BBQ is located inside the Assemble Marketplace with a few other restaurants. There's seating inside and outside with great views. I am a dry rub type of gal and I believe that real good bbq doesn't need any sauce. Unfortunately, the brisket had way too much bbq sauce. Had I known it would've been slathered all over the brisket, I would've asked for it on the side. The brisket had so much potential. It fell apart perfectly but I couldn't taste the flavors of the bark or seasonings since it was overpowered by the sauce. I really like the potato salad and my partner's garlic and butter corn was delicious. The mac and cheese wasn't my favorite.
