Tomukun has mostly hit it out of the park on k-bbq! I guess, it's on its way of being hit out of the park. Considering they are still fairly new, it's ok to have a little room to improve-- and those points just being inconsistent service and over-seasoning in their food (which I'd prefer to under-seasoning, just saying). I am a fan. The prices are reasonable, the food is almost consistently delicious. Which is great in my book. When it's a little too much for my palate, its usually the cloying sweetness-- in the meat marinades, sometimes even in the stir fry bokkeums, and the side dishes. Sometimes it's perfect, sometimes its just too sweet. This has never really deterred me from wanting to eat here, though. The non-bbq Korean items hit the spot, especially the pork belly kimchi stir fry (jeyook kimchi bokkeum). Hubs and I will devour this in a minute. If I were to note one thing, I'd say that sometimes the tofu is actually hardened. I love a good firm meaty tofu, but I'm talking dried out hard once in a while. I also love the addition of chewy rice cakes in that dish! Also, huge ups for their naengmyun (cold noodles-- mul & bibim, both) as well as their jjajangmyun, which I hope they start serving for dinner. Some of the better jjajangmyun I've had in Michigan, actually. I almost cried when I tried it and it tasted close enough to what I was looking for, which has been an impossible journey for countless years... I felt this rush of joy and relief knowing I could find decent jjajangmyun close to me! Soondubu and seafood pancake are also noteworthy. Proper good! Great for a big dinner out with lots of friends, or grab a non-bbq table and order off the kitchen menu-- won't be disappointed. read more

Tomukun has really done an amazing job at creating an enjoyable KBBQ experience with their well-trained staff. Though the whole ambience of the restaurant may seem more Americanized, the food is pretty authentic. If I'm planning to get KBBQ, I'd plan to come with at least a group of 4 so that the cost of the combo meats can be split between more people. The combo 1 is for 2-3 people but has a generous amount that is definitely more than enough for 2 people. The combo 2 can easily fill 4-5 people up. The staff is very attentive and patient and generally knowledgable about all dishes. For meats I have tried all in the Combo 2 and all are marinated well. If you want a little more flavor in your meat, they provide you with three different sauces for any of your food: sesame oil with salt, soybean paste, and housemade sriracha. All sauces are equally good in my opinion, depending on what you're in the mood for. KBBQ is generally on the pricier side and while Tomukun is a bit pricey, I think that the amount of food you get is worth it. There is also tons of banchan that comes with your meal and they can all be replenished upon request. I've tried the chicken wings, kimbap, steamed egg, ddukbokki, tangsuyuk, and some of their korean stews and dishes. All are very standard and decent-sized portions that can be shared amongst groups along with the KBBQ meat. They also have a very good lunch deal which I have not tried but they have 2 dish combos for $15. They have a bar area where you can order drinks while you wait for your table because during peak hours, it does get very busy. It's a bummer that they're not open on Mondays but all in all, this place does not disappoint. read more

Tomukun Noodle Bar has been my recent favorite place to eat. When I'd seen that they had opened and Korean BBQ next door I was ecstatic. Being from out of town it took some time to get to eat at TKB, but it was well worth the wait. There was a long wait for the BBQ tables, so we decided to eat out doors and ordered from the outdoor menu. I had the short rib soup, which was delicious, but what we loved the most was the seafood pancake, which I've had before, next door, but a first for my husband. "Holy Sh_t! This is good!!" end quote. Not only are they delicious, but huge. I do have to admit, I've never eaten at a Korean BBQ, and so I'm looking forward to the actual BBQ experience when we go back. Who doesn't love to eat food packed with flavor? I went with 2 friends during a Monday night. I was definitely surprised that there was a 15 minute wait on a Monday but that definitely speaks as to how many people enjoy this restaurant. We ordered the following: Edamame with sea salt - This was surprisingly pleasant with the edamame being rather bland but the sea salt lifted it and made it delicious and addicting. Ramen Pho - This was light and packed with flavors that had a very good balance of noodles, vegetables, and meat. Spicy Chicken Ramen - Coming from a family of Indian immigrants, I definitely am a big fan of having spicy food. The broth was bursting with flavor and the noodles were given a generous amount of spice and provided a nice kick of heat that instantly cleared my sinuses while not causing my nose to run(which to me is a sign of the right amount of spice in a dish). The chicken was crunchy and provided a contrast in texture that was pleasant and necessary. My only criticism is that the vegetables that were in the dish were often very long and difficult to chew through and made it very difficult to eat the vegetables evenly in the dish. If you are looking for a nice place to eat Korean food, this place is one of the best places to go to in Ann Arbor. You will get an extremely generous portion of food for what you are paying for and so It is definitely worth the money, especially if you are a college student looking to get 2 meals out of one. read more

Tomukun's Korean Barbecue is a reasonably priced option in downtown Ann Arbor to have a meaty, satisfying dinner. I always look forward to the banchan in any Korean restaurant, with creamed corn, fish cakes, and seasonal vegetables always being my favorite. The meat is marinated well, and the combo options are great for even more than they are advertised for. Although I've had more extensive Korean Barbecue experiences in New York, where the marinade is punchier, the selection of banchan is more extensive, and soondubu/stews are part of the meal which would be an exciting addition to Tomukun's current offerings, it always hits the spot. We have been to the original restaurant next door countless times and have always had excellent meals. I am pleased to say the Korean Barbecue addition is awesome as well. We had the marinated beef, barbecued at the table, along with the Spicy Beef Soup and both were heavenly. I have ordered these dishes on numerous occasions around the state and in SoCal and I was very impressed with Tomukun's versions. The side dishes were excellent as well. Serving size is very small. I was expecting when they say feeds 1-2 ppl for it to be a lot larger. I could easily eat all of what I ordered. Our table of 7 split the combo 3 and it was more than enough meat for all of us I just wish it was more than just meat. Decent Korean BBQ in AA. I make it a point to go to every Korean restaurant possible. I was pleasantly surprised to come across this place on the walk after the close of the art fair. We were greeted and taken to the back once my bf indicated he would be interested in some BBQ for dinner. I ordered the soondubu and added rice cakes to it. The banchans were an interesting mix of sweet dried seaweed, pickled sweet potatoes, potato and pineapple salad, greens and kimchi. I liked the seaweed, the kimchi was a bit heavy on the sauce and was fermented a bit too long for my taste as the bok Choy lacked that white coloring and appeared more translucent and older to me. My bf ended up getting the dol sot bibimbap, he thoroughly enjoyed it. The music was so out of character and hard core rap. All I recalled was the lyrics of this wrapper talking about f'ing two at a time and then f'ing some b$&?@. The music was beyond off putting and it was clear there was no management there last night. The staff waiting tables and cleaning looked to be mostly college kids. Such a strange experience being in this supposedly Korean restaurant yet I felt like I was in a TGIF or Chilis or Red Robin joint instead. Their lunch special prices were excellent, I expected a typical lunch special meal, but the quality AND quantity was amazing. Ann Arbor has change quite a bit since I went to school here decades ago. I would say that restaurants have definitely improved in both selection and quality. This spot is a nice addition. We passed on the barbecue and feasted on other menu items to get warm on a cold day. We feasted on Dolsot bibimbop, Kimchee jigae, and Tangsooyook (pork, of course). All were quite delicious and authentic. Best of all, not too salty as most Korean restaurant offerings tend to be. Banchan was very tasty (great kimchee and Chinese broccoli) but I am taking away a star for a limited selection of banchan. read more
