Come here if you are sick of super sweet and salty Thai food and you want fish sauce, birds eye chilis and a flavor that lingers slightly after the food is done. K and I went here for a Wed night dinner. We were so pleasantly surprised the dishes. We shared the following: Thai steak tartare (16)- this was packed with fish sauce and chilis. So savory and spicy. It was amazing. I've never had steak tartare like this. Grilled octopus (14)- tender grilled octopus in a mouth puckering sauce that woke up all your senses. It was great. Kor moo yang, succulent grilled pork jowl (12)- this was so tender, fatty and so addictive. The tamarind dip was tantalizing and a perfect accompaniment to the fatty pork jowl. Pad see ew neu - pad see ew with beef (15)- This was chewy thick noodle dish. It is classically found in most Thai restaurants. The noodles were well seasoned and very satisfying. Goong pae- fried shrimp cake  (12)- The mini shrimps are battered and fried with head and tails on. Everything was so crisp and crunchy, you didn't need to peel any of the shrimps. Yeah, we enjoyed our time here. The outside area... could've been better. But I think we caught them on one of those days where the people in the street were being especially annoying. Gotta love Brooklyn... But the menu way than made up for the stupid people. We had some seriously interesting food here. But first, those cocktails were tasty- don't sleep on those. And so pretty too... Foodwise, we think every restaurant should do small plates. That way we get to pay way too much, but also try way too many things. The American palate seems to grow more open-minded towards funkier Southeast Asian flavors with each passing year, evidenced by the popularity of dishes like the fish sauce wings at the legendary Pok Pok or Burmese fermented tea leaf salad, which is a regular part of any San Franciscan's diet. Restaurants like this newcomer Tong, know this, so they can lean heavily into the pungent, aromatic, ingredients that make Thai food such a party in your mouth. I'm so glad I dined here with a friend who similarly doesn't shy away from shrimp with the shell on or cold crab legs in a papaya salad, because we were rewarded big time with an amazing feast of Thai dishes I haven't had elsewhere in the city. Tong specializes in small dishes called kum klaem, meant to be eaten with whiskey, beer, or cocktails. With no liquor license, there is no alcohol to pair with their long list of these small plates here, but they generously allow you to BYOB so you can easily bring a 6 pack or bottle of wine and save yourself some moolah. My favorite of the small dishes we had was the Tum Poo Plara, the funkier of the two papaya salads on their menu. There's plenty of heat, coming from the visible flecks of chili seeds mixed throughout the salad, and the salted sea crab and fermented anchovy paste, which added both funk and flavor. This papaya salad alone made the kitchen at Tong impressive, though the other dishes also left me patting my belly by meal's end. To enjoy the Goong Pae, you have to be okay with consuming the shell of the shrimp. The kitchen deep fries the shrimp in these fritters, rendering the shells crispy and easy to swallow, but the texture might be foreign to those who have only eaten peeled shrimp. I also love oysters on the half shell, so we sprung for the Yum Hoy Nang Ram, but I felt that all the toppings-- fried shallots, mint leaves, & lemongrass chili jam were overpowering and didn't let the oysters shine on their own. I guess the toppings justify the cost of the dish -- $15 for 6 oysters-- but I would have gladly done without them. My two entree orders were so hackneyed that even our server commented on how incongruous it was to order their exciting kum klaem and then settle for main dishes you can find at any other Thai restaurant, but I couldn't deny a delicious plate of pad kee mao or crab fried rice. I wanted to see how theirs matched up to others I've had, and they were indeed phenomenal, which came as no surprise. The noodles in the pad kee mao were pleasantly chewy, and plenty flavorful, as was the crab fried rice, which came with very generous pieces of crab. Their outdoor dining setup is really no frills, and feels a bit precarious, as the whole structure shook as each car drove past, almost threatening to collapse inward. I understand it must be expensive to refortify the outdoor structure, so I might opt to order food for takeout for any future visits. I'm just so happy to see Southeast Asian restaurants proving that you don't have to compromise to make your food marketable to the American masses. read more

There is not powder or paste here. The flavor IS incredible. It's hot sweet, salty, sour with a big flavor punch and it's DELIGHTFUL! *Pork Jowl (succulent grilled pork jowl with spicy tamarind dipping sauce): So tender and succulent! Definitely try this as well. *Gai Tod (our favorite fried chicken from Hatyai on the Malaysian Border, Crunchy Chicken Thigh Topped with Crispy Shallots, served with sweet chili sauce): Sooo crunchy and tasty. We had this before the chicken leg in the Khao Soi, which paled in comparison *Khao Soi (northern style curry with egg noodle, chicken leg, shallot, preserved mustard green, cilantro) - Super flavorful and comforting! Came here on a Tuesday for an early dinner, and I cannot say enough great things! The space is open and staff lovely. We had some great unique cocktails, that were as pretty as they were tasty. One had egg white and rose water/petals, the other a butterfly pea tea and lavendar topping, as well as a sazerac/old fashion of sorts with a strong floral orange that was excellent! I really enjoyed my experience when I came to Tong! The food was absolutely delicious and authentic. The only downside of our visit was that we came before a show at the Brooklyn Mirage, so we couldn't eat as much as we wanted to - all of the menu items looked so good! However, we were seated at a small table near the bar that was intended for two people. They just added an extra chair added, so we barely had enough room for our food, which was slightly inconvenient. And we could have asked to be moved but there weren't many tables just for three people and the one table that we thought of asking for was reserved. Also, we weren't aware that this restaurant was pet-friendly, and toward the end of our meal, the hostess led two people with a dog to the bar. My friend has a serious dog allergy, and we didn't feel comfortable with a dog inside the restaurant so close to the bar, so we decided to leave early. While I understand some restaurants allow pets in outdoor spaces, which I'm fine with, it felt unhygienic to have one inside. Overall, the food was delicious, the service was good, and the ambiance was cozy. I've eaten here weekly since May. I live in walking distance so it super convenient. It is the best spot in the neighborhood. Honestly nothing like it around here even comes close. The flavors are so bold and delicious. The prices are crazy affordable especially for the quality they are serving. I've brought everyone I know here and I haven't had a single person think it was anything but amazing. I've had almost everything on the menu but my must have favorites are the oysters ($1.5 during happy hour) the basil chicken with rice and the corn salad. The place is relatively small and you're on top of each other and in covid times, I am just not crazy about it, so I have been ordering from them quite a lot. Gai Tod Hat Yai - recently ordered this and this is pretty damn good. Chicken was moist. Neu Yang - really good. Super tender and love the sauce. Kor Moo Yang - also good if you're not into beef, get the pork version. Pla Muk Yang - had this a couple of times, but recently it wasn't as great in the to-go order. Made a last minute reservation here on a Saturday evening for two people. Popular spot with a small gathering at the entrance as people wait for tables to open up. Thankfully only had to wait five minutes as we were soon seated and given menus. Since one of us is vegetarian, asked which dishes didn't have fish sauce. Unfortunately almost all the items they have include fish sauce except one tofu dish. Ended up settling on that, as well as the Kaeng Tai Pla ($21). Food arrived shortly in large plates and a strong aroma. While the dish looked good, it was overall disjointed. The fish, curry, and vegetables seemed to have all cooked separately and brought together at the end, since none of the flavors arrive in the meat or veggies. Curry itself runs hot but not in the good way, as the spice was added after the fact, not blending in with the broth. Vegetables are undercooked as well. Tofu dish had issues as well, since the tofu lacked any flavor/seasoning. Up on star because the service is efficient. Based on both dishes, wouldn't make a return trip. read more

I was very hungry and very excited to try some different Thai flavors. I decided to order something outside (my) box, so I started with the Taro fritter, which was surprisingly sweet. It looked and tasted like a small cupcake cut into 4 pieces and fried. Gang Pu, a crab curry with Jumbo Crab meat was my main course. It was primarily a soup bowl of sauce. I hardly found any crab and there weren't any vegetables to speak of to at least make it substantial. Way too much sauce for the amount of side rice that it came with. Judging from the other reviews, I just made the wrong choice. My friend however, enjoyed everything that she had ordered. One of the Branzino dishes (I think it was with curry.) Like many other restaurants these days, Tong's FOH is woefully understaffed - I'm not sure how one waiter, one bartender, and one busser was able to keep the entire restaurant afloat on a busy Sunday night, but they did. The food came out quickly enough, but little things like water service, getting drink orders, getting the appropriate utensils were a little challenging. Nevertheless, the food here was delicious and worthy of a Bushwick excursion. Tong has several small plates that are unique and interesting. They are unafraid of strong and interesting flavors, and the spice level was good - it's not Thailand-spicy, but it was not white-people spicy. *The standouts* - yum ma kheu yaw: this cold marinated spicy eggplant dish with hard boiled egg slices was a sleeper hit - I loved the powerful chili jam and coconut dressing and wish I could jar it home - tod hua phee: this crispy banana blossom pancake was crispy and crunchy yet lacy and light in character - mum: the dry cured beef and beef liver sausage had a blood sausage funk to it with spice, and I appreciated the lettuce and shredded papaya accoutrements that encouraged eating it like ssam *The good* - goi neu:this was an Isan-style beef tartare that had the sharpness of lime juice; it was pretty tasty and I liked the spice - khao soi: a solid curry noodle dish with a tender chicken drumstick. I appreciated the mix of boiled noodles and crunchy ee-fu style noodles. - kha nom jee nam ya poo: this crab curry had excellent flavors, although the texture and delicacy of the crab meat was slightly lost amidst the pungent and rich green curry. Not a crab-forward dish, but still delicious. - gai tod hat yai: the fried chicken thigh was juicy and crisp but nothing special - kor moo yang: the grilled pork jowl was tasty, but also nothing special *Do not recommend* - pla muk yang: while I liked the seasoning on the octopus, the tentacle itself was mushy and lacked any sort of snap and char - pad cha talay: this shrimp, squid, and scallop stirfry comes with a bowl of jasmine rice, so do not order an extra bowl. The pork was already sour and the like made it even more sour. It definitely was spicy so beware. I had one loose letture to wrap and had to pull the other one from under to make a wrap. It made it a bit easier to eat. My friend got the braised beef. It was delightful! The beef was so soft and tender. The curry was on the sweet side but in a good way. My friend also got another cocktail which was also good. Everything came out so quickly, that were were only in there for about 30 minutes. I was shocked at how fast the food came out. When one thinks of Thai restaurants, Queens usually is the place that people visit. Brooklyn is a borough that is known to be very hip and contemporary. AND when I get word of new restaurant that boasts great food, it certainly warrants a trip. It had been some time since I was by that area in particular and I was very glad to see another Thai establishment in the area. I had visited this establishment on a random weeknight had brought a guest. Normally I would try a new restaurant on my own and then determine if it is a place I would bring a friend or a date to afterwards. But due to COVID and the recent easing of restrictions, it was a good opportunity to eat inside with a guest. ** Their COVID protocols include a temperature scanner near the entrance. They mounted the thermometer on the wall at a certain height so shorter people might need to tippy toe for the forehead reading. Every employee is wearing masks and tables are placed to promote social distance inside. There is a structure outside with seating for anyone who likes a cool a breeze with their food. Customers are required to fill out a contact sheet per health guidelines. The menu is accessed via a QR code to limit physical contact. The outside structure has a good amount of seating available and the inside set up (25% capacity at that time of my visit) felt very safe. The decor is quite nice as well. It is a little dark inside which makes the ambience great for casual or intimate dining. The bar area is very nice and I can see that without any restrictions, this would be a very happening late night and weekend spot. My guest and I got a table in the corner which was nice. Our main server was a very nice lady named Suchasinee (Sucha for short). She checked on us often and made some good entree recommendations. Another employee named Jade came by to make sure we were good even though he may have been busy in the kitchen. The drink menu was separate and consisted of signature cocktails and some beer options. Each cocktail had a special combination that made it unique. It is not very often that I would participate but some of the drinks sounded very good. Sucha made some recommendations and we decided on Jungle Juice (Mehkong Compari, Cherry Heering, Grapefruit, Passionfruit and Hibiscus Lime) for myself and my guest ordered After A Long Day (Angels Envy, Chrysanthemum, Yellow Chartreuse, St Germain and Dolin) because the name stood out. The Jungle Juice was very tasty and refreshing. The After A Long Day is very strong and is a great drink for HH or winding down literally after a long day. Compliments to the employee Pat who was at the bar as she made all the drinks for us. And of course we had to have classic Thai Ice tea on the side. Something newer about the menu was the addition of "KUB KLAEM" which they translate on the menu as "small plates" and are perfect for sharing and pairing with drinks. The ones we tried were Goi Neu (Chef's signature dish consisting of Isan style spicy beef tartare, with shallots, toasted rice, cilantro and complemented by taro chips and seasonal vegetables). A FAIR WARNING...this dish is VERY SPICY. Even my guest who loves spcicy food had to take a step back after sampling the beef tartare. I am not a big spice fan and thought she was exaggerating (which she was not). This dish has a kick that will have flames of savory goodness dancing on your tongue while burning your taste buds. I highly recommend it!! The second dish we tried was the Koor Moo Yang (succulent grilled pork jowl with spicy jaew tamarind dipping sauce. The pork was tender and savory yet I had no issue with the sauce (probably because my taste buds were damaged from the beef tartare. kidding) and we both were fighting for the last piece. I lost that fight btw. The third "small plate" we tried was called Pla Muk Yang (grilled octopus with cilantro and chili lime sauce). This is considered a favorite after school snack according to the menu. These snacks are definitely fancier than what I am used to eating! The octopus was tender and tasty. For classic appetizers, we ordered the Chicken Satay with a side of peanut dipping sauce. You cannot go wrong with that. We wanted to try some entrees and I went with my go to Pad See Ew with Shrimp, Chicken and Beef (I paid extra for the latter as the dish usually only comes with one protein). My guest has fancy taste and when our server Sucha mentioned Khao Pad Poo (crab meat fried rice with onions, scallion egg) it was ordered on the spot. It was nice to have a rice dish among everything else and this was a very good choice to share. Sucha recommended one more dish was was a specialty called Pad Cha Talay (stir fry shrimp, squip, scallop mixed with birds eye chili, garlic, green peppercorn, lime leaf, basil and fingeroot) and this certainly lives up to its description. Love Tong! Last night was my second time coming to this restaurant and it was amazing. The servers were super helpful and kind when i was asking for recommendations. The Bartender, Owen was super nice as well chatting with me when i was waiting for my friends to join me. Tong - Thai Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

Tong has quickly become one of my favorite Thai places in Brooklyn. Like other reviewers have mentioned, the dishes here are extremely authentic and are very different from what you might find at other Thai restaurants. It's more of a small plates / tapas sort of restaurant, so it's great to share several small dishes, each with extremely unique flavors and textures. So far, some of my favorites have included the Salmon Zab (raw salmon with a spicy chili dressing), Goi Neu (beef tartar), the fried chicken, and the grilled pork jowl. The Khao Soi and the crab curry are also excellent if you want a larger dish. Be warned if you're not good with spicy foods; Tong liberally uses birds eye chilis, which will set your mouth on fire with one bite. They have a great outdoor dining setup for COVID, and all the employees are very conscious about cleanliness / proper mask usage. Service was super nice! They made me a really dirty martini just like I asked! Decor was cute, it's swanky and could be somewhere to show off to your friends/dates/enemies! The OK comes from the food, I feel like all my friends sold it to me as the insanely good spicy thai food, but I found it pretty average? Like yeah it's not takeout pad thai but the crab curry was just fine? I wish it had more funk and kink, it was rich and good but not what I wanted. The fermented pork salad was delicious, but this is also my favorite dish ever so I will always order it. Pork jowl was also good, perfectly grilled. Sauce was fine, well executed. I'd stick to small plates next time! Maybe I'd come back but bushwick always feels like such a scene so it may be a weeknight thing. read more

Amazing - go with friends that enjoy new food experiences. I went with two people, we ordered about 6 dishes and shared. Fully and worth the price - very well priced considering how beautiful the restaurant is and how well prepared the dishes are. Recommend for group dinners - would love if they had a tasting menu of all their actual menu items, too many good dishes! read more

Tong is pretty good tasting but it is pretty overpriced and the quantity is not that good. I wouldn't get Thai from here when it's quite a bit more expensive than the average Thai restaurant but it's not really better than the average one.
