I am NOT a donut person. i've had friends who would stop at Krispy Kreme, buy a dozen, and practically finish them by the time they got home. not me. I thought it was time for an update on Top Pot. Three years ago I shelled out 5 shiny red stars and again in 2012 I've got 5 more for 'em. This tucked away gem is nestled between tree lined streets in Capitol Hill. Filled mostly with locals and the occasional donut-loving tourist, this cute, quaint, quiet coffee spot is quiet lovely. Most people think of donuts and want to get one in the morning. But here you can visit and get fresh baked goodies or coffee at practically any hour. Have some work to do in the evening? Want a late lunch or snack? This is your spot! It's also great for a date or a place to read a book. And as for the donuts... They're awesome. Have you ever gotten into one of those knock-down drag-out fights with a friend? The kind that ends with both of you stomping off into the dark at 3 am, only dimly aware of who has the keys to the apartment, and not giving a crap either way? Let me tell you this - the only way to fix things after a good old-fashioned bitch fit is, well, a good old fashioned. Top Pot excels at the fryolated arts, with their old fashioned being heaps better (in my opinion) than their cake doughnuts. The glazes and frostings are all good but honestly I think the simple plain no glaze, or maybe the cinnamon sugar, really lets the the old fashioned shine in all its dark, crispy, tender, sweet goodness. Another massive success is the apple fritter - bigger than my two fists, stuffed with apples, shiny-glazed and ready for some ecstatic moans. The server rolled me a big fattie! Don't get the wrong idea here. It was loose leaf tea and it was delicious. I liked this place a lot. The doughnuts were pretty standard with creative names like the feather boa (cake doughnut with icing and coconut sprinkles). The anal side of me wants a consistent logo. It seems like donut people fall into two camps. There are the Krispy Kremers, who like their donuts light and fluffy and sugary. And then there are the Cakies, who like their donuts dense and uh... cakey. Well, I guess there are also people who don't like donuts at all, but really, these individuals are clearly unstable, and their opinions should be universally disregarded, no matter the topic of conversation. Anyway, me, I'm a cakey donut kinda guy. I like donuts with a little, as the kids say, "something-something." Donuts that you can sink your teeth into, after which they will stick to your ribs. The donuts, I mean. If you've got your teeth stuck to your ribs, call a doctor. Top Pot was not exactly a haunt of mine when I lived in Seattle, but when I'm visiting friends in my old neighborhood, well the place is just a couple blocks away. How can I not go? I will agree that the coffee is not quite Vivace, but as for being lumped in with Starbucks? Madness. Also (and I recognize this might shred any coffee-related credibility I have, but I will continue nonetheless), they offer an Ovaltine Latte there that I tried on a lark but has quickly become one of my favorite "fluffy coffees" ever. I'm bumping them up a star because lo and behold, these days I'm often in that corner of the city looking for a caffeine fix at an ungodly hour of the morning. Often there are people in line who are obviously still drunk from the night before and they are total jackasses but the baristas are super nice regardless and I appreciate it. I'm still appreciating the clean bathrooms but I wish they had a decent non-sweet food option. I can't stomach a donut first thing in the morning and the rosemary cheese scone is really bland and dry. As an aficionado of all things delicious and not nutritious, I have eaten many a donut. Top Pot is as good as it gets in the realm of donuts. Especially when you get there early and the donuts are super fresh. I went here again after a long absence while I attempted to work off my last visit to Top Pot and was not disappointed. My maple old fashioned was delicious - gooey on the outside, chewy and moist on the inside. My kid got a chocolate sprinkle donut and I don't know if he's reliable as a critical reviewer but he said it was YUMMY! My americano was not just coffee+water and the large mug for coffee drinks "for here" is a nice touch. Tons of places to sit, both inside and out and even an awning for those days when it's sprinkling but otherwise nice enough to sit outside. Pretty good music on most of the time, and friendly service. So two years after reviewing this place for the first time I'm adding a star. Top Pot is more than just doughnuts. It's amazingly delicious doughnuts, fresh, delectable coffee, and a cozy atmosphere to indulge in a little sugary snack while you satisfy your caffeine craving. Having been recommended to me by several trusted sources, I knew Top Pot had to be a featured stop on my inaugural visit to Seattle. Luckily, this location was very close to where I was staying. We stopped by to get our caffeine fix one afternoon, but were sad to see that the doughnut selection was limited. No worries though, we just came early the next morning to grab an assorted dozen to share with friends. My favorites by far were the glazed old-fashioned and the maple bar. The simplicity of the glazed old-fashioned really hit home with me - I could've easily eaten a few of these if left unattended. The maple bar was also quite delicious - not too sweet or cloying - really just perfect. The coffee was excellent as well. Cold brew has become my standard order, and Top Pot's did not disappoint, offering the perfect bite to the sweetness of the doughnuts. read more

I freaking live for the Homer Doughnut...for those of you that don't get it - that would be the pink one with the sprinkles. Doh... During that horribly dark time when I managed a bunch of emotionally stunted salespeople, I would bring these to our weekly meeting in hopes of holding their attention for 30 minutes, buying a little affection, and getting them high enough on sugar that they might actually do their jobs for an hour or so following. I ducked in here real quick to try some of Top Pot's doughnuts. They were pretty good! I got an espresso kind of doughnut which had a very good flavor to it! I bought Steve a double chocolate doughnut and it was tasty as well. I bought a hot Chai Tea and was out to dash back to my car before the two hour limit was up. Anita C. is right, these are the Anti-Krispy Kreme. They are dense, made with some love and taste like a donut, not candy. They also had some pretty good coffee and a great, peaceful shop to hang for a few minutes to read the paper. Not sure what the few digs on staff are all about -- they were super friendly and patient with me. Skip the coffee and the apple fritter. I'm sorry, but they are really not that good. My top two things to get at Top Pot: Raspberry Chocolate Cake doughnut (I seriously ate THREE on my trip) and drumroll please... MAPLE BARS! I would like to thank Seahawks player Golden Tate for jackin a maple bar at 3am, well after Top Pot is closed and well before they open, while drunk. The story caught the attention of my boyfriend who then insisted that we check out the doughnut that would cause such a ruckus. We didn't go to the same location, but they are the same doughnuts so coming here worked out anyway. I don't blame Golden Tate for craving Maple Bars one bit. They are OFF THE HOOK! They remind me of eating pancakes except about a zillion times better because I don't even really like pancakes that much. I'd eat them only if placed in front of me but otherwise, I wouldn't order them myself. Same thing with maple flavored things in general. For some reason though, Maple Bars are a perfect balance of sweet maple and heavenly, puffy doughnut (also another thing I don't even usually eat). The bars are relatively large and I inhaled one in less than two minutes, and it would have been faster than that but I was trying to savior it. I love to put on my comfy shoes and hit the streets with Ryan. We usually have the loveliest, most interesting walks; on the day Ryan brought me to Top Pot as a surprise AND a surprising, indulgent escapade (he is the one who keeps my calorie count disciplined), we were enjoying a sunny, crisp afternoon while strolling without a specific direction...well, he had Top Pot in his mind. I thought we were just wandering around. Yeah...there's nothing like a walkable city! And it's even better when it has compelling areas to explore. Capitol Hill has amazing streets with lots of character. Walking through this neighborhood, allows you to have an almost sociological relevant experience when it comes to people watching. Window shopping is delightful (and sometimes amusing), and there's the ubiquitous Space Needle, with which one has close encounters on every corner, everywhere. There are also the unexpected, little neighborhood gems like Top Pot. It has a great "I'm vintage" ambiance. Walls of books to read surround you while you peruse the latest happenings in the city and around, thanks to all the newspapers available for reading. They have a cool old phone, just the one I want for my place. The music selection is good (at least it was when we went). They didn't have many doughnuts that afternoon, but among the selection, there were some we were eager to nibble on. Ryan had the Cinnamon Cake, and I had the Maple Cake. We shared, exchanged pieces and enjoyed mixed flavors...these perfectly sweet, melt-in-your-mouth, baked rings are worth coming back. Ryan enjoyed a delicious hot cocoa cup, and told me the whipped cream was terrific (sadly, I don't do whipped cream...it's one of my few willpower non-breakable commitments). I had a latte: good coffee to accompany the sweet treats. Ryan considered that it wasn't only about the doughnuts: he loved having this afternoon snack in a place he thought had a very cool "library feel". I agree with him. We had a good share of sugar that later kept us walking for 5 more miles that day. Good times. read more

I keep wanting to try some of the other flavors, but it's hard to resist the one I know I like and I can't eat more than one. I wish I had never checked out the nutrition facts online. That said, the doughnuts are worth the calories. I tend to favor the filled, risen doughnuts, but they are all good. The coffee is also awesome. I buy the whole bean packages to make at home sometimes. And if I feel like picking up a drink there, they have soy milk for lattes, which is helpful for a lactard like me. If you want to try a unique drink, Top Pot serves ovaltine lattes. Reminds me of my grandparents. But still tasty. The ambiance is cozy, there are plenty of plugs for your laptops, and there is good and friendly service. One morning at my old internship, my supervisor brought in a dozen donuts from Top Pot. I was excited - gleeful, even! - when I first found them that morning. Top Pot is really popular at my old office and I had been dying to try them. I picked up a cinnamon one. Being the neurotic person I am, I inspected it carefully before immediate consumption. But no immediate consumption ever went down because I found a thick, curly strand of strawberry blonde hair not ON my donut, but rather, wrapped AROUND the length of my donut. No one in my department has curly, strawberry blonde hair. And if you'll refer to the left hand corner of this review, you'll notice that I have black hair, so it certainly wasn't my own ... Whoever thought of this marketing coffee house with donuts is a genius. People come in throngs to Top Pot to get their gourmet donuts. The space is dim, cozy, with a lot of vintage flair. Even their donuts reflect a certain old school charm about them. We got their coffee, apple fritter, and a glazed blueberry donut ... all of which *minus the coffee* were huge. I liked how the blueberry donut * my favorite kind* was not too sweet and the apple fritter ,though fit for a bear to finish was good from start to finish. Of the two donuts, I didn't particularly think they were outstanding from donuts in other stores where I'd pay a dollar or less. But I get it - it's really a coffee shop that serves donuts and hence the more expensive price. If you're pondering about coffee -- get it. I does well to cut the sweetness of the donuts. A friend introduced us to the cakey goodness of Top Pot doughnuts. I think these are the best doughnuts I've ever had. We ordered two dozen to bring back to Cali and when we bumped ourselves off our flight to let some kids make it back home (stupid Alaska Airlines), we ended up with doughnuts for dinner, doughnuts for snack, doughnuts for breakfast. I almost always get just normal drip coffee since it seems to go well with doughnuts so I can't say much about the espresso. The wi-fi is solid and its in kind of a quiet part of Capital Hill which makes this a great place to get some work done. It seems like most people think the same as there are a lot of laptops here so it might not be the best place to have a loud conversation with your friends but they do have tables outside so its a win-win for everyone. read more

Let me first start off by saying that I enjoy writing a review while I am sitting in the very place I am reviewing. Four stars. For the delicious variety of donuts, for the drip coffee (hard to find amongst the glorious espresso snobbery of Seattle), for the cozy atmosphere. I might even give Top Pot Capitol Hill five stars if the Alterna-Girl at the counter wasn't such a bitch to me. But she is. This is the third time she's been behind the counter while I've been here. All three times she glares at me, cuts me off while I'm speaking, and gives me major attitude. This time I am here with a friend of mine and she was snotty to both of us. Doesn't listen to me when I say small (last time she bitterly corrected me: "eight ounce".) This time she handed me a large when I asked for an eight ounce, and when I spoke up and said "eight ounce..?" she made a face and said something to the dude next to her at the register, laughed, glared, angrily changed it to a small, brusquely handed me my change, etc etc. I tipped her a buck anyway. I've been a barista and I know we all have bad days. But still. Of course, when her little ear-plugged bull-nosering friends came in, she was a sweetheart. My friend commented to me that she is acting like we remind her of the girls she disdainfully hated when she was in high school. Maybe she isn't over it yet. Hopefully her day gets better. I almost feel bad writing this, because I can see how many people really like their donuts, but I just don't. I tried the Bavarian cream donut last time, and could only manage about 2 bites. It tasted kind of like super sweet raspberry cough syrup to me. Today I had a plain frosted donut, and it was just kind of blah. Not terrible this time, but not really worth eating more than half. The coffee's pretty good though, and the decor is noteworthy, if you're into that. They have really great floor to ceiling built in bookshelves, and beautiful light wood paneling. Super tasty!!!! The coffee? It's not quite Starbucks, but it's pretty close (and that's not a compliment). But what really sets this place aside - the clientele ruin what could be a really great atmosphere, and the employees make it that much worse. Don't get me wrong, there's one girl who works there who is AbFab. The one with piercings and dreads...she is super nice, attentive, and seems to actually give a crap about the customer. The rest? They will treat you as if you are wasting their time, and intruding on their space (even with the three feet of counter between you and them). God forbid you take any extra time while ordering a dozen doughnuts...with nobody else in the building. If it weren't for the service, I'd give this place a three. If the coffee was better (ie: Different roaster), maybe even a four. But...well, I don't take rudeness well (except when it's me...then it's not rude, it's cool ;-)) So, you want a doughnut?
