Went in here for dinner with friends on a Friday night. The place was crowded, but we managed to snag a table before the rush. I had two of the fried shrimp tacos with flour tortillas, along with a great and zesty chipotle sauce. The tacos had some type of cole slaw-variant in them which added a great crunch. The soda fountain also offers a nice mix of Texan sodas that I'd never seen before; a nice novelty to the place. It did seem a tad pricy - two tacos and a soda for $12 - but perhaps I'm just used to taco pricing in the Rio Grande Valley. I'd definitely hit up Torchy's again. read more

I love the style of this place. It's good food with twist. They have really yummy sauces and good mixtures to provide a tasty taco. The bottled water they have is also made out of purified rain water. The other day we went to the restaurant the place had bad cell service. I checked to see if they had wifi and they did not! I liked that the cashier suggested the black vegetarian beans when he realized that I was health conscious. A few months ago a friend of mine invited me to have dinner there. I am in love with Torchy's Tacos. I was SO excited to finally try some "Tex Mex" food since it was my first time visiting Houston and I was very impressed by how delicious these tacos were. I got the Migas breakfast taco and the Trailer Park (extra trashy). The Trailer Park blew my mind. It was SUPER rich and I could eat it every day. Whether it's the crispy Fried Avocado, or Extra Trashy Mad Cow, I'm reenacting the soup scene in When Harry Met Sally and making passerbys uncomfortable. UNTIL THEY TAKE THEIR FIRST BITE, then they get it. This new-ish location in Rice Village is so glorious giving us the option of sitting inside OR outside, and the staff is always super friendly (as I've come to expect from the Torchy's franchise). It's always packed, so expect to wait and maybe not have a place to sit, but its so worth it. First time here? Try the Green Chile Queso with Guac, the Fried Avocado taco, and the Democrat. Come here all the time and need a little something different? There may or may not be a menu that is unofficial and not posted on their website but can be easily found with a quick google search (you're welcome!). And then get the Street Corn because it's AMAZING. In short, it's the best non-traditional/fusion taco place that I've tried in Houston. It's cheap, inventive, and I can't get enough. Good food, terrible customer service. I came here last week to order take out. I ordered 3 tacos, and the green chile queso. When I got home 15 minutes later I realized that I had been given the tacos and chips, but no queso. Naturally, I called to ask about it. They kept me on hold for about 10 minutes only to tell me that whoever had answered the phone didn't know what to do. I was put on hold to wait for the manager which took another several minutes. The manager gets on the phone and immediately puts me back on hold saying he has to look up my order. After another wait time he informs me that there is no record of my ever having been there, but that he could mail me store credit which would be credit in 3 business days. Love love love Torchys. And I don't even like tacos typically. I got the chicken fajita and catfish ones. The corn meal crusted catfish was to die for. I did a takeout and ended up eating one hour later at the airport. It still felt so crunchy and fresh. The slaw had these pickled peppers that added so much depth to the flavor. This was across the street from the wine tasting we attended at Plate and Bottle so we walked over to try it out. It's a fun place, I'm glad we went! I had seen the Democrat and the Trailer Park (trashy of course) are often mentioned on Yelp, so those were my 2 picks. BF ordered the Green Chili Pork and the Republican with black beans and rice. We got all that for $20! The dining area was a little stuffy and crowded so we went outside to wait for our tacos. There's a cigar bar next door with people outside smoking so that was kind of a turn off, but it wasn't horrible. Tacos came out QUICK! The Republican: Spicy sausage in a flour tortilla. I actually really enjoyed this one, it very much reminded me of "breakfast tacos" my grandmother used to make when I was a kid. Silly tasty fun! The Green Chili Pork: I was just a skosh disappointed in these. . . possibly because I had very high hopes. They were tender enough, but kind of bland. Second location in Houston.. and it's closer to where I live! I love how this location is clean and spacious, especially after seeing how small the one in Austin is. I also love the "damn good" sign on the wall. Tacos are pretty good. I always try to the 'Taco of the Month'. It's usually something creative and interesting. Off their regular menu, I enjoy Mr. Orange and the Democrat (sometimes the barbacoa is WAY TOO SALTY. Not sure why it's inconsistent, but it's delicious when not as salty.) Queso and tomato-less guacamole are good too! They come with a basket of warm chips. Mmm! Parking is tricky because the Rice Village is always packed. Try parking a block or two away. This is a place where you get tons of options of tacos and good quality ingredients with a twist. This place is GOLD. First meal in Houston, and I was mesmerized. Waited in line in the swampy weather, and was ok with it. Ordered the street corn (I love corn and this was delishh), the queso was SPICY how I like it, and the fried avocado taco was ridiculously filing. The tortilla was meh in my opinion, overly carb-y, but it had to be thick to handle all the ingrediants. Three different vegetarian taco options, with plenty of appetizer options also. It's delicious and well-priced for how long I stay full (sometimes into the next day!). I always order the same thing and it is almost always delicious. Torchy's is the first place I've tried non fast food, gourmet tacos. At around $3-5 a taco, it's worth it. I've never eaten at the store, it's always been takeout. They always put stickers on them to let you know what's what. I've gotten takeout numerous times here and never had a bad experience. Brushfire ($3.75) - this comes on a flour tortilla and has a hefty serving of chicken. Chicken is seasoned well and and grilled jalapenos is a nice contrast against the sweet mangoes. My favorite taco here, spicy but how spicy should be. Mr. Pink ($4.75) - they don't overcook the tuna! Love this one when I want some seafood in my life. This is pretty tasty without losing delicate tuna flavor. Trailer Park ($3.50) - two generously sized fried chicken pieces with lots of cheese and lettuce, you can't go wrong with something that seems so simple, but tastes pretty damn good. If you don't want to go outside your comfort zone, start here. This is a hefty one that's pretty filling. Green chile queso and chips ($5.25) - in a city where tex mex and queso is a staple, this hearty queso stands out. I didn't have it with the guacamole due to allergies though, but I bet it would be exponentially awesome-er. It's unique and doesn't taste like any of the other quesos out there. I wanna say they use cream cheese or at least that's what I'm tasting and it's that flavor that sets it apart from the others. Chips are freshly fried and not too thin, not too thick, yielding a satisfying crunch instead of crumble. Two tacos is enough although one was enough for me with a side of veggies I made. Well let me tell you that for the most part, the line moves much faster than you'd think, so don't be discouraged if you see a long line out the door! Brave the humidity and scorching heat for these tacos - you'll thank me later. This is a very casual place with creatively and uniquely named menu items. With each taco averaging around $4-$5, most people choose to order 2 tacos (sometimes 3 if you're really feeling it). As far as recommendations go, everyone has their own opinions. Personally, I would definitely suggest starting off with the chips and queso as an appetizer because the queso here is on point and will leave you wanting more. Taco-wise, my favorite is probably the Trailer Park. You can get this either Classy (with lettuce) or Trashy (with queso), but I always opt for the Trashy Trailer Park. Why? I'll take queso over lettuce any day. Perhaps this isn't the most healthy choice...but hey, it's okay once in a while right? More favorites of mine include the Fried Avocado (simply because I love avocado) and the Republican. Is this the best taco place I've been to? No. Is it still decent though? Of course. The shrimp tastes so fresh and good. -green chile queso: this is something you actually have to get. It's spicy, warm, and creamy. It tingles in your mouth. It's addictive. Ever sense Menu of Menus 2013, I have been thinking about these tacos. Well today, my husband and I decided to take a trip on a whim. Parking seemed to be a bit difficult for some but we got lucky that someone was pulling out right when we were pulling in. Walked up to a long line out the door and around the building. It was very convenient that they have menus right at the door so you can look at and make you choices before getting to the register. The line move quickly. We had the Brushfire, Trailer Park-Trashy, The Democrat and the "taco of the month" called the Washington. My husband loved the Trailer Park and seems disappointed with the others after he had this one. I was a major fan of the Brushfire. The Democrat was pretty good as well. Lots of meat and tasty barbacoa. The Washington was ok. The meat was a bit bland and I didn't feel like it was one that I HAD to have again. This place is a definite must go for us! When you want gourmet tacos, come here to get a blast of it. This is another hit place that I first saw in Austin. The sign and logo shows that it has great taste. It's great for both kids and adults. Here you can find loaded tacos with fancy names that offer combinations of ingredients. Like Austin, get ready to wait in line for these amazing tacos. I have never seen this place with less than 10 people to wait behind before you can make your order. Yeah, the lines may be long and parking can be a hassle to search for, but if you really want the most breath taking tacos in your mouth, then get in line! These tacos are ginormous and filling. You might have to share with a buddy if you're not hungry hungry. The staff is friendly and there is a variety of sodas available to meet your needs. I also like to mention they have the soft chewable ice. Barbacoa is one of my favorites to have in a taco so I ordered the Republican. Oh wow. Torchy's is so friggin' good. As soon as I finish, I want it again. It's that good. My wife and I play tennis every weekend morning for about two hours. Afterwards, we're really hungry and really thirsty. But not hungry for a cheeseburger sort of hungry. Hungry for something hearty and healthy. Torchy's hits the spot. It's healthy, but not all fruit and veggies kind of healthy. I get the Green Chile Pork and the Brushfire - both on flour tortillas. And a Sympathy for the Lager beer. Mmmm. The Green Chile Pork is slow-roasted pork carnitas simmered with green chilies and topped with queso fresco, cilantro, onions, & a wedge of lime. The Brushfire is Jamaican jerk chicken, grilled jalapeños, mango, sour cream & cilantro. They're both incredibly delicious, with just the right amount and mixture of ingredients. I feel satisfied after eating, and energized to handle weekend chores and errands. Not full like I have to go home and take a nap.
