I ordered the Brushfire (Jamaican chicken with mango relish) & Chicken Fajita Tacos with a side of the street corn (bomb bomb bomb!) and chips/queso. The corn could've been a bit warmer but the queso was wonderful. Just enough spice. Chopped up avocado & a drizzle of some kind of sauce. OMG it's seriously the best queso I've had in Houston. On my second visit I tried the Baja Shrimp tacos with cabbage and some kind of aioli topping. Talk about a party in my mouth. Oh wow. Torchy's is so friggin' good. As soon as I finish, I want it again. It's that good. My wife and I play tennis every weekend morning for about two hours. Afterwards, we're really hungry and really thirsty. But not hungry for a cheeseburger sort of hungry. Hungry for something hearty and healthy. Torchy's hits the spot. It's healthy, but not all fruit and veggies kind of healthy. I get the Green Chile Pork and the Brushfire - both on flour tortillas. And a Sympathy for the Lager beer. Mmmm. The Green Chile Pork is slow-roasted pork carnitas simmered with green chilies and topped with queso fresco, cilantro, onions, & a wedge of lime. The Brushfire is Jamaican jerk chicken, grilled jalapeños, mango, sour cream & cilantro. They're both incredibly delicious, with just the right amount and mixture of ingredients. I feel satisfied after eating, and energized to handle weekend chores and errands. Not full like I have to go home and take a nap. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun, and the service is quick and friendly. Four tacos and a couple of beers for about twenty-five bucks - Torchy's is a treat. read more

However, we still had to wait in line for over 10 mins behind folks who were just placing their orders in the restaurant. I was visiting from New York and a friend recommended this place. This place did not disappoint! I had the Democrat (shredded barbacoa beef,onions, cilantro, green sauce, cheese on a corn tortilla) and the Trailer Park (Fried chicken, orange spicy sauce, lettuce, green chiles, pico de gallo, extra cheese on a corn tortilla). While both were super delicious, I must say that my favorite was the trailer park. All the ingredients just meshed really really well together. I love to get my torchy's fix and this is the location I always go to. There is always a line, but it moves fast. And you can also order online and it is ready by the time you go there to pick up. The staff is great, clears tables quickly, refills chips. When I pick up to go orders, I usually ask for extra sauce cups and they nicely do so. I almost always get the same thing: the fried avocado. It's my fav veg option and I change it up by sub'ing black vs pinto beans, flour tortillas etc. oh and did I mention the queso, the best I've ever had!! With the guac and hint of spice. Where do I start? 1. Unable to place a to-go order as no one answered the phone. I called consistently back to back for about 10 minutes straight as I drove to the restaurant. 2. The new west university location needs to get it together. You have on line ordering. You have a designated "to go" section. People Like to order to go so they do not have to wait in line. All I gotta say is DAMN GOOD! Best Tex-mex place to get tacos. They have two locations In Houston. One in Rice village and one off shepherd. I'm pretty much addicted to the tacos here. If you go the first time you have to try the Trailer Park and Get It "trashy" which substitutes the lettuce for Queso! I also like the democrat and Fried avocado. Crossroads was good but I prefer the beef fajita over it. If you can handle spicy tacos try the brushfire, they load it with grilled jalapeños and it is a tear jerker even without the diablo sauce. read more

The chains in Houston do not give you as much in the taco itself as the original Austin locations. I ordered a baja shrimp and they neglected to load it up with pickled onions like are supposed to. They also include more shredded cabbage. It is okay, but not really like the original, so I'd consider this a step down from just about any Austin location I've visited. read more

Really upset drove all the way from pearland with my family March 10th only to be turned away at the door. A worker told us they were closing for a party. There were customers sitting down inside eating . We weren't offered the option to even order take out . It was very disappointing. My children didn't understand but really wanted to enjoy the food. I didn't know much about Texas before I arrived, but I had two items on my to-do list: boots from Cavender's and tacos from Torchy's. I was ravenous by the time I landed and picked up my rental car, so when I saw the sign it was a no-brainer -- and completely worth the harassment from my friends who wanted to know WHERE I WAS every five minutes! The tacos were deceptively simple: every component was at the peak of freshness and perfectly seasoned. The green chile pork with queso fresco and onion was amazing, but the surprise winner was the jamaican jerk chicken with grilled jalapeno and mango. Each came with an avalanche of chopped cilantro and a tiny container of hot sauce that had been chosen to complement the flavors in the taco. The sauce for the chicken was particularly hot -- I normally dump it all on, but something told me to taste it first, and I was glad I did -- more than a light drizzle would have obscured the sweet mango and savory chicken. Each taco was around $4, which I found perfectly reasonable, and a draft beer was $8. Service was so-so: the young man behind the counter only rang up one of my tacos, which I didn't realize until they brought the first out alone. After waiting awhile I had to flag down a woman who didn't speak English but found another woman who did. The second woman took my order and my credit card to the register, then brought back a receipt to the table. (I wasn't thrilled about this, but like I said, I was starving!) Great crowd, including a ton of young people and an absolutely adorable middle-aged couple who were slow-dancing next to their table when I left: this sounds weird but it was one of the sweetest things I've ever seen, and I told them so. I'm a huge fan of Torchy's. It seems the 'fancy' taco fad has grown over the last few years, but Torchy's represents the best. The flavor combinations are unique but not so unique that they no longer make sense. I won't name names but there's another place in town that tries too hard to be creative and has overshot the mark. Torchy's is almost always busy. Depending on which store you visit, parking might be a hassle. At this location there is a lot and plenty of street parking to be found. The inside is well designed with a fun aesthetic that invites you to look around. The cashiers have always been friendly and helpful and don't mind helping you decide on what delicious taco to try. Keep in mind that you can trade toppings and tortilla, as well as sauce if you'd prefer. Or 'Make it trashy' which I believe means no lettuce, but add queso. Their queso. Oh lawd cheezus, their queso. I don't know what makes it so damn tasty, but I could drink it by the gallon. I've had alllllmost all of their tacos - but my favorite remains the fried avocado. I was really excited to try this out based on all the Yelp reviews. I ordered most of tacos that they recommended and I added a side of corn as well. The wait was kind of long, but that's because there were a lot of people. I forgot which tacos I ordered, but the most memorable one was the Baja shrimp taco. Even so, I already tacos taste like that in Boston so I wasn't entirely "wow-ed". I was pretty excited to try the corn, but it turned out to be the biggest disappointment. The corn was so dry, so small, and so bland even with the seasoning on top. I don't recommend getting the corn. I'm so glad I chose the smaller size and not the big one. I write this review with so much sadness. I am a HARDCORE fan of Torchy's, and can't believe I feel the need to write this review. I typically visit the Shephard (Montrose) location, as it's the original location here in Houston. Every. Single.Time. I got to the Rice Village location, my service is slow, my taco is sloppily put together, they're out of certain ingredients, or the location smells like cigars because of the store next door. I continue to have hope just because they're in Rice Village. I'm not sure how the experience can be SO different from the Shephard location (or even the heights and Sugar Land, as I've been to those multiple times as well). Unfortunately, I will never send Houston new comers to this location. Which also means, they probably won't be visiting Rice Village. In regards to food, as a vegetarian, I love the independent. Their street corn is my favorite street corn in Houston, and their queso is hands down unbeatable! If you love spicy, the diablo sauce freakin' amazing. You can even buy it in a jar! read more

The food was excellent! You only need to order 1 taco. They will fill you up! We all really enjoyed the tacos and the chips and salsa. I also got the refried pinto beans, and they were wonderful. The location is the only downside. Parking is difficult, and be prepared to pay. All the spots are metered and the nearby garage charges as well. The location has a small dining area that is extremely loud. It was very difficult to order because the cashier and I couldn't hear each other over the noise. We ate outside, but that was uncomfortable in the hot Texas sun. I would suggest table umbrellas or some sort of patio cover for people who want a quieter dining experience. read more

Went to Torchy's twice while visiting Austin so I was super happy to learn there was one near me! Specialty tacos in Tex Mex fashion, I always leave content. They are moderately priced (about $4 a taco, we got 5 for $21), but come full of fillings! I had the democrat (Barbacoa), the trailer park and the Jamaican Jerk. The barbacoa was mostly meat filling, both it and the trailer park were really good. The Jamaican Jerk was my least favorite of the three - though still good. I've also been here for breakfast tacos, but I was not as impressed as I have been with the more savory tacos. Other cons are that it is usually pretty crowded and parking can be a pain. Will definitely be back for more tacos and have heard great things about the queso! read more

I went here on a Tuesday evening around 6pm. It wasn't that crowded as usually seen on weekends. Parking is usually difficult because of the limited spots, but it wasn't that bad. I ordered a breakfast taco with chorizo, egg, and cheese. It was delicious! It came with a red salsa I dont know the name of. I thought the taco was unique because they cooked the egg and put the chorizo inside the egg. I would definitely order this again. I also got the Democrat. It was okay. What really surprised me was how big the avocado cut was. I might order this again if I wasn't feeling adventurous. Staff was friendly and nice. One asked if it was my first time, so he can offer assistance. I would definitely come back here again. The place gets busy on weekends though. read more

The service here has gone down the drain. I've lived in west university/rice area for 20 plus years. The last 1-2 years there has been a major decline in the service. They renovated the restaurant quite nicely but don't have it properly staffed to handle the order flow. Tacos take longer to come out of the kitchen and chips and guaca/queso sometimes don't come at all until asking again. I'd go to other locations. read more

I get there and they make me wait 40 more minutes while I watch everyone else get their orders, and the staff is reassuring me they're working on my order "right now". I always love Torchy's Tacos not matter what location I visit; however, I have to say this visit was not my favorite. A friend and I took a quick break from some work we were doing and thought it was a good idea to run over to Torchy's. The restaurant was busy but not out of line busy, the line to order was moving along just right. After we ordered, we were advised that it could be 10-15 min wait. I was fine with that time frame so we decided to walk across the parking lot to another store. We came back in like 20 min and our food was not ready, we were not particularly happy or mad about it, but when 20 additional minutes passed I was not so happy. Once we get our order we check the bag, the order was not complete and when the server opened my taco she actually touched it with her hands. It took another 15 or so minutes for the order to be complete. I understand that when you are busy it is hard to keep things moving fast, but there was no courtesy or apology for the delay. I am still a fan of the place but I had to share this feedback, customer service is really what keeps you going as a business.
