Overhyped and overpriced trash is the best I can describe this. What is it that people like here? Is it the fact that all of their breakfast tacos have egg as a main ingredient in them? Is it the fact that they have silly little names for their tacos?
Let's start with something as simple as walking in and ordering. When we arrived, we literally could not walk in the doorway because the line was out of the building. Unlike some people, I will not judge this as a sign that the food is good. I've been burned too many times. The two simply don't correlate, and yes this is annoying to do for cheap-o quality food. I don't mind waiting to eat at a nice place, but this ain't a nice place.
On a related note, I'm waiting in line, and I realize just how packed this restaurant is. They definitely do not have enough room in their space for the amount of tables in there. It's like a maze walking through the tables and chairs. Awesome, crammed into a sardine can for my meal is exactly what I like.
I finally got to order, and chose the Green Chile Pork Taco and Beef Fajita taco. I knew to ask them to hold the peppers and pico de gallo because they like to load the tacos with these vegetables, and give skimpy amounts of meat (found that out by sampling from a friend before). I also decided to get some chips and queso with a soft drink. Total amount spent? About 16 bucks. Yep, 3.25-4.50 per taco will do that.
The person who took my order was relatively nice, but puzzled me when they asked if I wanted something called "street corn" (I know, gross sounding) with my meal. I asked them if it was free with my order, and she said, "No, it's extra." Well, I didn't ask for it, and it's not free, so why would you ask me if I want it? You going to ask me if I want beans and rice too? Trying to upsell me is lame. Please don't do this, because these are techniques used by sleazy used car salesmen.
Soda fountain was good. Made from sugar cane, yum.
The chips were warm and queso was really GOOD. There is where the two star rating comes in. My only small complaint here was the odd lump of guacamole placed in the middle. No thanks, I ordered queso, not guacamole. This is typical of what non-Mexican, Anglo-Americans think they need to do with pretty much all dishes to fancy them up (LET'S ADD GUAC TO FREAKIN' EVERYTHING!), but it's simply not needed.
I got my tacos delivered to me without much of a wait. Thanks, guys! I wish I could say good things about the tacos, but I simply can't. They are mediocre at best. First HUGE mistake. Do NOT, I repeat DO NOT give me small crappy store-bought tortillas! I understand because you're putting avocados in everything and calling your tacos clever little names like "The Republican" that you think tortillas should be an afterthought, but no no no, it is flat-out insulting to have a catch phrase that says "Damn Good Tacos", charge me over 4 bucks for a single, and then have the audacity to give me tortillas off of a grocery store shelf. Even Taco Cabana has a machine that can make decent homemade-style flour tortillas. There is no excuse for this, and if you wouldn't know what to do with a comal if it came and burned you right in the face, you have no business opening up a taco shop.
The meat (which is the staple of the taco, not bell peppers and pico de gallo guys), was decent, but nothing to rave about. They like to add a lot of shredded cheese to their tacos (somebody's been watching Old El Paso ads, eh?), and I cannot complain about that, but the fajitas tasted more like a they were thawed and warmed in a microwave than marinated and sizzling on a smokey grill. The pork was relatively dry.
Lastly, the "El Diablo" sauce I asked for was not that spicy. I got the same spiciness from the queso earlier in my meal. Please don't call yourself "Torchy's", have your hottest sauce called "El Diablo", and make it tame.
Overall, DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE, stay away from this place. Want something good for this price? Go to Taco Palenque in Gulf Gate or one of the numerous places in the East End. read more
