Excited to say we have a high-end tasting Mexican resto with casual-food prices! We came up from Novato to check T-Real out last night and we're so glad we did. Ordered up chips, guac, salsa, beans and asada and tinga tacos. Would order all of those again in a heartbeat (fave was the tinga taco), the menu has a ton to offer. We may mix it up (pollo enchilada taste test next!) as we plan on coming back on the regular. We've been waiting a long time for Mexican food this good to come to Petaluma! We've eaten there three times in the last week because we just can't get enough. Best chips & guacamole we've ever had, anywhere. Everything is fresh and homemade! So far, we've tried the chicken enchiladas, carnitas, gorditas, pozole, torta, tamal, and fish and chicken tinga tacos. Everything has been simply scrumptious! They feature a daily aqua fresca, and so far, we've tried the jamaica and the limeade with chia seeds, which my wife is still raving about and insisting that I add to this review. Their outdoor atmosphere feels great too, with music and very cool Talavera lighting invented by the owner himself. The food is beautifully presented, and everyone on staff who has served us has been lovely. Most importantly, Tortilla Real cooks their food with a love that you can taste. We're very happy to have Luis and Tortilla Real in town! Whether the name, Tortilla Real, refers to "royal" or "real" makes no difference to us--this restaurant's food is both REAL *and* a blazing fire opal in the crown that is Petaluma's food scene. read more

I went in a few days after the first time trying it made an online order for pick up, gave a different name and the order was perfect! Also probably my mom's favorite and she's not one to like much. So today I decided to call in, and spaced out on the fact that I gave my name on the order regardless I walked down to get my food (since I'm only a couple blocks away) the owner happened to be at the register and who took my phone order. So when he was going to charge me he asked if I had left the review a few days ago. And I said yes. I will also add that he sent me a very nice message after seeing my review. And that made me change my rating and also try them the second time. This is now my third time going there. He went above and beyond to create a custom menu that included six different products of ours that all came out delicious! Our one rule was that everything had to be plant based and they killed it! Great food and fast, friendly service. The food we ordered was made with fresh, high quality ingredients. The tortillas are made in house. I believe the recipes are authentic traditional dishes from Jalisco. We had the Pozole, which is a rich, traditional soup and the Carnitas Burrito. Both were excellent. The burrito did not come with sour cream or guacamole, which looking back, we should have asked for both. It would have added some more layers to an already delicious entrée. Tortilla Real has a few wines from Mexico, which are hard to come by in the US. Mexico has some really great wines but, unfortunately, each bottle is heavily taxed in their own country making them less competitive with wines from the US and other countries. The prices Tortilla Real charges for their Mexican wines are relatively low. It is a good opportunity to pair them with delicious menu items. I highly recommend Tortilla Real. We were really happy with our experience and are looking forward to our next visit. read more

We were excited to try Tortilla Real after reading the reviews. We got our food to go on a Tuesday night. The food was serviceable, but a let down from the reviews. Breakdown: *Three stars for the carnitas tacos, the star of the meal. The carnitas seemed fresh, tender, and not greasy. They were however lacking in flavor- a little more salt, cinnamon, and acid would have helped tremendously!Tortillas seemed home made & reasonably fresh, but the single tortilla broke under the weight of the meat. Probably need double tortillas for street tacos. *One Star: carne asada tacos, they weren't good. The skirt steak was tough and lacking in flavor. *One Star: Guacamole & Chips. The guacamole and chips were pretty bad (& $11!) Guacamole didn't look fresh, it was already oxidizing. It was also in desperate need of acid. Too many raw onions on top overwhelmed the guacamole flavor. Chips were bad. They were greasy and tasted of old grease & fried onions. It was a cute place, so three stars for ambiance. Lovely restaurant in the downtown Pescadero area. I came with my vegetarian family and we were so excited to see that they had a plant based and regular menu! We ordered the veggie tamal, enchiladas, and burrito from the lunch specials and the chile relleno from the regular menu. They unfortunately didn't have the walnut pomegranate sauce for the chile relleno which was disappointing but it was still spicy and delicious. Everything came with chips and salsa for the table as well as large servings of rice and beans which were delicious. I will say that the flavors repeated with variations on a theme in each dish. Maybe if we weren't all eating vegetarian it would have been different but maybe we should have tried the soy chorizo option as well. They have sake/soju based drinks - the piña colada was okay but just not the same. Overall really solid spot and 4 entrees were perfect for the 5 of us! read more

Tortilla Real is a little treasure of a restaurant. They serve fresh and tasty Mexican food that's definitely a cut above other Mexican restaurants. Their blue corn tomales are delicious. And they offer a vegan/vegetarian menu, which has many tasty items. The service here is reliably good and the restaurant is clean and nicely decorated. There's a small patio for outdoor seating, and the restaurant is close to the theater and is in Petaluma's historic district. Place is very small and cramped, I suppose it's similar to all the restaurants in that area. Not a lot of wiggle room. They do black beans instead of refried beans. Not a deal breaker for me, but I prefer refried. I ordered the chicken enchiladas with mole. I guess it depends on what kind of mole sauce u like, but they serve homemade mole here that tastes like chocolate and used coffee beans. I was trying to get my mole on the side because I didn't want my plate swimming in the sauce, and I guess we had a communication breakdown. So my plate came swimming in mole and that's all I can taste. I've brushed my teeth 3 times already. Still can't get it out. I was so excited, them extremely disappointed. Had the chicken burrito delivered, which came cold, which wasn't an issue (microwaved). The chicken was clumped in the middle and was very bland. I think it was cooked in carrots or some kinda tasteless orange pepper. The only flavor was the giant raw onions in the store bought guac, I asked for avocado. No sour cream which I paid extra for. Also the burrito wasn't even wrapped correctly, it fell apart in my hands (see pic, I gave up on it). Not sure if the other food here is good, but I'm not gonna try it.
