Everything about this place whispers "class" because in a classy establishment you don't scream. A girlfriend and I were in Chicago for St. Patty's Day weekend and looking for a nice lounge spot with live music and decent food for a late dinner. Our first stop in that area was a busy and loud sports bar type spot with no places to really sit or hear at the time. When we stepped outside, I saw the sign (and it opened up my eyes I saw....jk) and suggested to my pal that we walk over to check it out. Best decision of the night! The greeter/managers at the front welcomed us with a smile and whisked us away to a table in no time. We were also greeted with some really nice live jazz music coming from around the corner. Plenty of polished wood, dim lighting but still really good energy. It might come across to some as "fancy" but not too stuffy at all. This establishment now screamed "Chicago"! It was a Friday night, and the jazz performances on Fridays apparently goes from 7:30pm - 11:30pm, and until midnight on a Saturday night. As far as food, the meals went over just as well and still with class. It was relatively late, so we ate light. I got the trout caesar salad, while my travel companion got the salmon version. Mine was a little saltier, given the trout, but still good. We both had their leek soup which was great! My serving could've been a bit more generous. It was late so I didn't need to eat too much at that time, but my bowl was almost at halfway, and being paid for. The soup wasn't served piping hot (as it probably shouldn't be) but my friend requested they heat hers up. When the bowl returned she definitely had more soup than me, lol. In either case we both really enjoyed it. The rolls were also nice. Our cocktails were refreshing. What better specialty cocktail to have to drink than one called "Southside" which is made up of Gin, Lime, Simple Syrup & Mint. I have high appreciation for a spot like this with captivating ambiance. This place hit the nail on the head for me. I think the live jazz band and the whole vibe was just the pace I needed at that moment and time, after a long day. Come here if you want to unwind, if you want some great jazz, if you want to celebrate a loved one or even if you'd like to catch up with a friend. It definitely makes for a great date night. Lucky for us our table was basically in the lounge right near the band. I loved visiting the Tortoise Supper Club and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for live jazz, good food or a nice atmosphere. I'd go back in a heartbeat while in the Chi. read more

The food and ambiance are amazing! We shared a dozen oysters for an appetizer--half east and half west coast. For entrees we got the filet and scallops. We had a 6:30 reservation and if we go back, I would make a 7pm or 7:30 reservation because the live jazz music starts at 8. read more

I have to say that this was one of the best restaurant experiences I have had in a long time! The owners who created this place put a lot of attention to detail in creating a very classy "old school" experience. As soon as I walked in and saw match boxes with their logo and the fine art in the entryway I knew I was in for a special experience. They even have a coat check. Very cool! I had a glass of Moscato and my husband had a Bourbon Old Fashioned, which fit the atmosphere. For appetizers I had the butter lettuce salad and my husband had the wedge salad. Both were good and I'd order it again. We ordered the meat loaf which was amazing! And the chef, when he heard how much we liked it, came out and talked to us about it. You must order this as you've never had meatloaf that good before. It's had a secret ingredient that you'll love. The dining room was comfortable and elegant. And they even have candles on the tables. The bus boys wear bow ties, and the waiters wear button down shirts and ties. In the bar area there is a baby grand piano and I think on their live music nights it would be a lot of fun. Since I as an art history major in college, I appreciated all of the decor including the weathered glass on separating their private dining area, the swinging doors to the kitchen, and the bathroom fixtures in the ladies room! This is the second time dining there. First time was outstanding, today we were disappointed with the service. The waiter didn't engage with our table at all. For an upscale restaurant his mannerisms and engagement was very poor. He acted as if he would rather be somewhere else. The food was good but the flow of the courses was poor. It was a birthday party, but there was never an acknowledgment unlike the first time when the waitress was so wonderful. read more

A perfect selection for Chicago Restaurant Week! Honestly, the BEST Lobster Bisque I've ever encountered with three chunks of lobster marinating in the bisque! The braised short ribs came in two large chunks of meat! So tender and tasty resting on a bed of mashed potatoes. No smaller sizes for this establishment! The cherry pie was amazing. The ambiance in this place is so cool - swanky, elegant, chill. The service is fantastic. From the host, to the managers, to the server, to the table attendants. Due to COVID-19, they offer outdoor dining in addition to indoor dining. Tables are decently far apart from each other, waiters are wearing face masks, and hand sanitizer is offered at the hostess stand. I do wish they had given disposable menus and possibly disposable napkins / plates / silverware, just to be extra safe, but I understand many places aren't doing this either. As for the food, it was overall pretty standard - good as expected but not memorable. I got the meatloaf for myself and shared the Peanut Butter Pie with some friends. I don't really like meatloaf that much, but it sounded good on the menu so I decided to try it. Flavor wise, the meatloaf itself was pretty flavorful, so I was pleasantly surprised. The mashed potatoes were also tasty. However, I wish they had less meatloaf and more mashed potatoes, as well as some vegetables since meatloaf alone can be quite heavy. The peanut butter pie was standard. Nothing really stood out to me about it in a good not bad way other than it being a pretty large slice, so that at least is good for the price. read more

Went for Chicago Restaurant week and had the $59 dinner menu. Started with lobster bisque. Potion size was huge with lots of large pieces of lobster. Served with house made bread stuffed with Gorgonzola cheese - delicious! We chose short ribs as the entree - again a large portion of fork tender ribs served with velvety mashed potatoes and carrots. Ended with dessert of cherry and tortoise pie. Chewy pie served with ice cream was meh, but the tortoise pie (kind of like a brownie with a pecan topping) was outstanding. Service was terrific - went on a Friday night. The club was super crowded and the restaurant was pretty loud. Very good value - I would definitely go back. read more

We came here for a team dinner. We had a private room and there were 19 of us. The service was outstanding, the prefixed menu had our company logo on it, the staff and the managers were so accommodating. The food was fantastic, the wine selections were perfect, the desserts were wonderful. They even accommodated four team birthdays that we had. We changed the time on them and the number of people three times and they worked with us every time we called. We really appreciated all the effort the entire staff made. I highly recommend this restaurant for larger parties or group reservations they were phenomenal to work with. read more

We are staying across the street from Tortoise Supper Club and can see it out of our window. Yelp said it is good, so we made reservations for last night. I rarely experience exceptional service, but our server, Linda, was a master of her craft. Her recommendations were spot on. She was always aware of our needs without hovering. It was my wife's birthday. She made it extra special by singing to her as she served dessert. It helped that she has a beautiful voice. It was like being serenaded by a trained vocalist from one of Chicago's musical companies. On to the food. Outstanding. Cocktails were very good. And a nice selection of eclectic libations. The table bread is sinful, lightly glazed with a homemade mix of cream cheese and blue cheese The chopped salad was fresh. For an appetizer, we chose the eggplant pizzette. Perhaps the best eggplant we have ever had. On to entrees- My daughter had the scallops. Perfectly seared and served on a bed of risotto. My wife enjoyed the Beef Wellington, a beautiful cut of filet enveloped by a perfect pastry breading. Since it was Saturday night and I was feeling alright (Sorry Prince) I ordered the prime rib. Great marbling and outstanding taste. Our sides were corn casserole and creamed spinach. Both were very good. Lastly, dessert was served. We thoroughly enjoyed the homemade cherry pie and and peanut butter pie. We still haven't decided which was best. They make everything from scratch and you can tell. This is a supper club and may be the best food ever served in a supper club. The atmosphere was relaxed yet decadent. You could hear the live jazz from the lounge area in the dining room and it was a great accompaniment to great food. This will not be our last visit to this establishment. Kudos to the owners, the chef and the entire staff for making this a superior dining experience! read more

Went there on my last trip to Chicago. Wow, they had a happy hour with $1 oysters or shrimp. You could get 6 per drink. The ambiance was great. A real steak house feeling. They have a wonderful relish tray, not the traditional stuff, but great selection. Dinner was delicious and well presented. Our waiter, Chime, was outstanding. He was attentive and friendly. He took the time to read the table and knew we liked to joke and banter, so he entered in. I watched he with another table where the people were more formal. He was equally formal with them while being attentive. Will be returning on my next trip. read more

Exceptional service - if you make a relationship with the manager and servers, they will give you the experience of a lifetime. Classic, chivalrous experience that makes you feel ridiculous. You won't ever pour your own glass of wine; they're so attentive. We had the ahi tuna and oyster appetizers, and almost everyone in our group ordered the Chilean sea bass or scallops. The cheese stuffed bread is decadent. A phenomenal experience from the minute we walked in until the last farewell from the staff on the sidewalk to send us off. read more

Our new favorite spot for birthdays! Our second celebration here in 2019 was just as amazing as the first one! After hosting a small party for my sister's birthday, I knew TSC was where I wanted my husband to take me for mine. Our table had a view of the beautiful dining room, yet felt private and cozy. Our server Jeffrey was well-versed on the menu and helped explain some details and answer our questions. As with our last visit, each course was presented beautifully and everything was delicious. The Chilean Sea Bass was my favorite dish of the night. My husband could not resist having the Walleye for a second time! Although I ordered the Brandy Alexander Pie, I ended up swapping plates for the Tortoise (and had the remaining portion for breakfast this morning with my Starbucks coffee). Yum! We finished the evening in the lounge, listening to the beautiful sounds of the jazz trio. It was another perfect evening - I just wish we lived close by! read more

This place is a NO for our party of 4. Prime rib is chewy and fatty. (Bit pricey too) Scallops had to be sent back they were rubbery and crunchy. There are other restaurants nearby that are better than this place. This is my 3rd time here. First 2 times were good. Service was rushed on a Saturday night at 7 pm. Hamburger was good. read more

Established in 2012.

From Keene and Megan: We founded Tortoise Supper Club in the fall of 2012 inspired to open the type of place that combined all the things we love in a restaurant. The best example of how we wanted the restaurant to feel is embodied in the scene from Breakfast at Tiffany's where Holly Golightly's cocktail party is stylish, sophisticated, fun, and energetic, but mostly warm and welcoming. Keene still has a flip phone. He has never had a smart phone and he is proud of it. He is the kind of person that wants to talk instead of text, and he doesn't care if he is following the latest trends. In a way, that equates to how we feel about Tortoise, including our menus. Nice touch with offering the option for the kitchen to slice it for you. At this point, we were pretty full and got lemon sorbet (not too sour, not too sweet) crème brûlée gelato (good) and because it was our 39th anniversary, he brought us an "Italian donut " (sugar donut with vanilla ice cream) that was great. I noticed another table getting the biscoff cheese cake, and carrot cake. They looked great and were HUGE. Coffee came a little late but that's being picky. Complimentary lemon cello ended the evening with a nice touch. My wife said the service and food made this a wonderful experience and a memorable anniversary. I agree. The atmosphere is dark but romantic and the noise level isn't bad. I do have a HUGE COMPLAINT!! Joe's Seafood in Chicago has an unusual amount of personal history for me. It opened as a…read morepartnership between Miami Beach's iconic Joe's Stone Crab and Lettuce Entertain You, bringing South Florida to Grand and Rush. I first went when it was still a huge, buzzy Chicago spot, and one of my most memorable dinners came after my high school graduation in 2003. I even got a speeding ticket on Lake Shore Drive with my grandmother in the back seat on the way to dinner, which still makes me laugh. Chicago was an especially fun place for Joe's to arrive. Open outcry trading was still a force, and the wealth creation around it was wild: people who had dropped out of high school could become millionaires in their twenties, while math PhDs from the University of Chicago could make fortunes in the same ecosystem. It was a golden era for hustle culture, when commerce idolized Tony Montana in a way that today is more likely to idolize Jamie Dimon or David Solomon. Death Row and Bad Boy ruled the airwaves, while Michael, Shaq, Kobe, and Allen Iverson defined the NBA. Basketball was so dominant in Chicago culture during my coming of age that I still map other things, including restaurants, to NBA teams. Joe's felt like the Miami Heat coming to Chicago in much the same way Smith & Wollensky represented the New York Knicks: each brought a recognizable piece of its hometown culture into another major city. Joe's brought real South Florida sizzle to Chicago, and it landed at exactly the right moment. Going there felt like an occasion. Florida took longer for me to understand in full. My family has roots in the state going back decades, farther north along the Atlantic coast, and I didn't visit Miami until March 2007, when my sister started graduate school in Coral Gables. That trip began my love affair with Miami and helped me understand why the original Joe's was such an institution. A close family friend's father spent time around Miami in the 1960s and 1970s. He knew local fishermen who caught stone crabs, which gave me an appreciation for the older South Florida culture around the food, separate from Joe's own history. Another Joe's memory captures an entirely different moment. Looking through my OpenTable history, my July 31, 2008 reservation at Joe's in Chicago is the earliest reservation I can find at a restaurant that is still open today. I was 23, working at UBS, preparing to move to New York while the firm was already on fire from its mortgage losses, and Lehman would file for bankruptcy just weeks later. I was broke but wildly aspirational, dreaming about dinners at Balthazar, begging my way past the doors at Cain and Tenjune, hoping to drink for free, and trying to meet women comically far out of my league. Through all of those memories, the restaurant itself has been remarkably consistent. The stone crab claws are incredible, the seafood is excellent, and Joe's holds its own among Chicago's serious steakhouses. The room has traditionally felt a little more formal than Miami, with bow ties, polished service, and a darker old-school steakhouse rhythm, while still being genuinely welcoming. Finish with the key lime pie. Years later, my wife and I held our wedding reception at RPM Seafood, another Lettuce restaurant, then ate at the original Joe's during our honeymoon in Miami during COVID days later, which felt like a fitting circle back. In sheer range of venues, repeatability of quality and atmosphere, and consistency of hits, Lettuce is the gold standard in Chicago, with some of that same reach in Vegas and DC. I've been extraordinarily privileged in my exposure to hospitality, and I still repeatedly admire Rich Melman's model, taste, and execution, now carried forward by the next generation of the family. Joe's is a prime example: world-class, durable, unmistakably Chicago, and absolutely somewhere I want to return next time I'm in town with some dough to spend. While Joe's may not be French, this place still earns my highest marks: très bien!

The Tortoise Supper Club promised an upscale dining experience, but unfortunately, it fell short of expectations. While the ambiance was elegant and the restaurant was clean, the service and food left much to be desired. Our waiter seemed more interested in delivering a monologue about the menu than attending to our needs. He was visibly annoyed when we interrupted his lengthy descriptions, and his unprofessional demeanor set a negative tone for the entire meal. While the wait for our food was surprisingly fast, it felt rushed, especially for a steakhouse where one expects to savor the experience. The meal began with a delicious loaf of warm bread with melted butter, a promising start that raised our hopes. My wife's lobster bisque was exceptional, brimming with lobster and flavor. However, the main courses were a letdown. The pan-seared scallops were underwhelming, with undercooked peas in the risotto, and the Skuna Bay Salmon lacked the "wow" factor we anticipated from an upscale establishment. The Beef Wellington was decent, but the filet was a bit dry. The prime rib, touted as a specialty, was disappointingly average. While the side dishes were mostly enjoyable, the portions were small, especially considering they were meant for sharing. The five-cheese mac & cheese was a hit, but the grilled asparagus and broccolini were unremarkable. To add insult to injury, we were charged for two loaves of bread, even though we didn't request the second and didn't even touch it. The balance of spirits and bitters was perfect, a testament to the skill of the bartender. It was a drink to be savored, and it set the tone for the impeccable quality to come. Next, the oysters were out of this world--fresh, briny, and served with a delicate presentation of mignonette that highlighted their natural flavor. Late dinner review. I keep missing their $1 oyster happy hour special but I finally made dinner and it was OK. To fully appreciate this review, THINK how many drinks and $1 oysters you and a partner could have in two hours 4:30-6:30 for $150? We received very helpful attentive service from Sasha who we would have loved to have taken home but we are sure now that we couldn't have afforded her, see below. Our steak tartare was very good, a little small but spicier in a good way than usual. The Berkshire pork chop was excellent but we would not order the white fish again, either improperly frozen or just too thin to really prepare well, overcooked or mushy- pick one. Small salad was small. It could be quiet and intimate there after 8pm but somebody decided to seat us next to the only other four people, LOUD from the South, we could see outside the bar. The star was the cherry pie with the smallest scoop of really good ice cream we've ever seen. This place just opened in November and is a great addition to Chicago dining. It reminds me of an old school supper club. We went on Saturday evening and although we had a reservation we waited over an hour after our reservation to be seated. This was my biggest issues with the establishment. Beyond that, everything was fantastic. The bar had a great band,the bartender was very attentive and friendly, and the cocktails were fantastic. When we did FINALLY make it to our table they sent oysters however they should have sent a little more in my opinion as we were a party of 5. The dinner service was great and the food delicious. I am now officially a regular at Tortoise Cluib. Lunch and Dinner are both better than any place in River North. The food is all i really care about and the kitchen keeps me coming back. The Dover Sole is perfection from the sea, treated simply with a champagne sauce. For lunch I can't stop ordering the club sandwich. The sweetbreads are always crisp and tender, the Crispy Shrimp are spicy and citrusy and perfect with the grilled lemon, pickled chilis and remoulade. The Steak Tartare is the best in the city. I have been here 4 times now and have yet to find something to complain about. When I am not here I am thinking about coming back and craving the food. Delicately poached Dover Sole with a Champagne Truffle Fumet is the best fish I have ever eaten. Wild Pheasant Pie with the Foie Gras Cognac sauce is decadent. The peekytoe crab salad with lemon truffle dressing is beautiful, light and delicious. The humble whitefish is crtusted with fresh herbs and served simply with spicy brocoli and baby potatoes almost good enough to keep me from spending the extra money for the Dover. Espresso martini- self explanatory and exactly how it should be. Nice and tasty. Option to do vodka or tequila. We chose tequila Classic martini... Also nice simple and chilled. Dessert- we tried a sorbet. My friend wanted pistachio but they were out so we got dulce de leche and when I tell you it taste like homemade ice cream. It was such a nostalgic experience that took me back to my great grandmother who churned it when I was a kid. I was in heaven for just a few moments with every bite.
