Oh my god, do not order the prime rib. Tough, chewy. US beef is graded into eight different categories. From best to worst they are Prime, Choice, Select, Standard, Commercial, Utility, Cutter, and Canner. In my opinion the prime rib tonight was commercial at best. I asked for rare, and I received rare, everyone else at the table asked for medium rare, we were all in agreement, this was the worst prime rib were had ever tabled in a chicago restaurant. The A'jus that covered the prime rib was more like a gravy. The beef Wellington was reported to be excellent by one of our party. The service was excellent, my complements to the servers. What a perfect place for a celebratory dinner. Full of music and laughter and swanky, 1950's big city style. Per the website, the owners were inspired by the party scenes in Breakfast at Tiffany's and White Christmas, and it totally comes across. Let the martinis flow! We came for our reservation at 9pm on a Saturday, and the place was hopping. Excellent jazz combo playing in the bar. The hostess invited us to grab a spot in the bar while they got our table ready, and the vibe was so great we would not have minded sticking around. But the table was ready within a few minutes. We carried our excellent cocktails over to the dining room. A gin martini, a vodka martini, an old fashioned, and a manhattan. All delicious. All damn strong. Every single thing we ordered was wonderful. The relish tray sounds like it's going to be kind of meh, but order it! Roasted golden beets, pickled mushrooms, and pimento cheese worth fighting over. Perfectly fried calamari, too. The skirt steak was tender and flavorful. The scallops were seared to perfection. Eggplant was not only breaded and fried beautifully, but the presentation was a treat. The chef's mother should be very proud. We had way too much food. But it was all so good. No time for food pictures. Too busy eating. And eating. Florentino was our waiter. He was everything you dream of in a server. Warm and attentive. Not intrusive, but ever present. I want Florentino to be my server wherever I eat now. I had such a a wonderful experience at this supper club, restaurant, steakhouse. Located close to our hotel we were able to walk. As you enter, it has a cool vibe, kind of like an old-time jazz club. One reason this meal was so enjoyable, and I do not say this lightly, Sergio might be the best waiter. I've ever experienced. He handled our group of three tables perfectly. He's very passionate about the restaurant, about the food, and making sure that you have an enjoyable time. For me, the Chilean sea bass over coconut rice stole the show. The scallops over a mushroom risotto were delicious and of course, the steaks are fantastic. Dinner tonight and started with seared ahi tuna. We didn't care for it. It wasn't seared that we could tell. We expected the sesame crust cooked a little. I had the skirt steak and it was tasty. The mashed potatoes were creamy but not hot (but they actually brought meatloaf out first and the waitress didn't even acknowledge the mixup). My wife had the special pistachio crusted sea bass and it was very good but very small fish portions. Between a 3.5 - 4/5 it's standard! You get what you are expecting, unfortunate part is that there's only one type of oyster for happy hour. I prefer east coast oysters for their sweetness, but these were medium sized and still very tasty. We also heard that cocktails were $6 (half off) but the bill said something different. I am torn about my rating for this review. We absolutely loved the charm of Tortoise and the food was amazing. I was already planning my birthday dinner there with my family. Our waiter seamed like he didn't want to be there. He was not rude but he had an arrogant edge to him. Went to the bar after dinner for some jazz. As we sat down the band was taking a break and the waitress said they'd be back for 1 more set (they stop at 11:00). The music was delightful. The bar was about 20% full. The waitstaff started to take tables and chairs from the dining room through the bar to the "red" room. It was very distracting. THEN, they started doing the same to the bar. They took all the vacant chairs away right in front of the band and the only thought we had was "they want us to leave". If that was true, why is the band still playing. We never felt more uncomfortable and unwanted. They ruined what started out to be the best night ever. read more

Where do I even begin? This place is the most incredible restaurant with an unmatched experience. Not only is the food to die for, but the service and ambiance are unreal. It's cozy, elegant, and luxe all while feeling homey and decadent. The lobster bisque has big pieces of fresh lobster and pairs amazing with their cheesy garlicky bread. Don't even get me started on the braised short rib- I can't bring myself to order something else as an entree. We found ourselves here out of a wish to celebrate National Oyster Day (August 5) a day late and to our dismay, the Tortoise came up a buck short. The tortoise puts on airs and fronts as a high end dining and social club of the late 30s, we were disappointed to find the food itself to be more or less mediocre. We started with oysters and cocktail shrimp. While I'm sure their happy hour is meant to clear out stock before the next shipment comes in, the oysters were far from fresh and I was hesitant to eat them. They were improperly shucked and left bits of shell in every bite, and the small ocean quahog we found attached to one oyster by a barnacle was particularly off putting, and points to a lack of concern coming out of the kitchen. Our first round of drinks came out after our first appetizer, and my gin and honey cocktail tasted of salt and metal. Our server apologized and let us know that the bartender made it wrong -- still baffled as to what ended up in it, but my best guess is that it was mixed in a dirty shaker which was first used to make a margarita. We next had the rubbery calamari with the puttanesca sauce lacked the salt from my first drink, and the lobster bisque which was the best dish of the night. This soup was creamy but not heavy, and the perfect amount of kick. Absolutely delicious! Next we were delivered the house bread stuffed with gorgonzola, which according to the menu is how we should've started our meal. Tasty, but unnecessary at the point of being 4 courses deep with entrees yet to be had. Pretty full already, but wanting to try some of it all, we opted to split the filet mignon as our entree. Although served initially with the truffle béarnaise sauce rather than the bordelaise sauce we requested, both sauces ended up being divine. The buttery mashed potatoes were too salted for my taste, but the filet was cooked to a perfect rare and the split plating was an elegant gesture. The savior of the evening must've been Jimmy, our upbeat and courteous server who spoke whose intention care could not have gone unnoticed! We had intended to stay for jazz but sadly another party had the space rented. Might come back to check it out eventually... as long as the lobster bisque is still on the menu. read more

This place is outstanding, great value, wonderful service, and excellent food. The atmosphere is great, dark and cozy. Shout out to our server Chime, who is a wonderful host, warm and friendly and knows the menu like the back of his hand. We got the 10 oz filet, prime rib, the broccolini and a rice side dish that we got due to a dairy allergy. Chime said it was a coconut mile fried rice and this was exceptional! So much flavor, perfectly cooked, I would highly recommend it for anyone. The Filet was probably the best cooked cut of meat we have ever had, so kuddos to them! It also had great flavor. The broccolini was very good, fresh and a little kick from the chili flakes. The prime rib was a mammoth portion, and it was tender and packed full of flavor. The prime rib was a home run. For dessert we got the Rose Raspberry Sorbet and the Peanut butter pie. The sorbet was very Rose forward but very refreshing. The peanut butter pie was amazing, silky smooth and the peanut brittle on the side was the perfect contrast to the pie. Some things that Im keeping my eye on for the next time, the lobster bisque looked incredible with huge pieces of lobster, the bread service looked incredible (we skipped it because we weren't super hungry, this was a mistake lol), and the cherry pie is supposed to be epic. Oh my gosssshhhhh I can't stop thinking about how great this place is. The servers & staff were so wonderful and kind. We really enjoyed talking with them and felt very well taken care of. During our meal the waitress next to us began opera singing to the table next to us, I can only imagine for a birthday, but man she killed it. On to the food! The bread they brought out just let me know right then & there that this was going to be an insanely good meal. This wasn't your average basket of pumpernickel, this was a golden buttery garlicky gorgonzola cheese filled beauty. Soft & crispy in all the right places. Again, we didn't even have to order this it was just their starter bread. For the entree, I would hiiiiighly highly recommend the Sea Bass. When I ordered it the waiter told me it was their specialty. The fish was crisp but so tender on the inside. However, what made me have to write this review was the sauce that came on the side. Ohhh the sauce, combined with this meal it made me stop and close my eyes to just take a moment to appreciate the fact that I'm alive and can taste something so good. The first course was the Lobster Bisque, which was excellent. Just the right amount of sweetness and plenty of lobster meat. After a little wait the Braised Short Rib arrived. It looked good, but unfortunately it didn't measure up. It was chewy and flavorless and reminded me of Chuck Roast. It was so chewy that I gave up on it after only a few bites. I will say the Peanut Butter Pie slice was massive, and fortunately, tasted good. A note about the ambience that many reviewers rave about: Be prepared for it to be loud. I ordered their NY Strip and was very disappointed - it was tough- hard to cut even with a steak knife and even harder to chew - definitely not prime. The wedge salad was good- although they forgot to bring it and we ended up getting it after the meal. Our server recommended the cherry pie- it was pretty awful. My husband had the Dover sole which was ok. Maybe just an off night in the kitchen or food past its use by date- we went on January 4th so after the holidays . I just love the entire vibe of this place. They recently redid the main dining area and it's cute but the wall paintings don't really make sense to me in that atmosphere. Food was outstanding as it always is when we visit. I was disappointed to see they took the pink squirrel cocktail off their menu but I did manage to snag the last one. Came here with a party of 8 for my husbands birthday. If the party is under 9 you don't have to pay a reservation fee. We got seated right away at a round table and there is live music playing. For a fancier restaurant I was surprised they didn't clear our wine glasses after we ordered drinks that were not wine. For this large of a party the gratuity was already included and the bill came out to about $700. Tortoise bread - so decadent. Soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. I was a little disappointed that every table just gets one for their table no matter the party size, so some of us had to share a slice (it comes with 6) still really great table bread Lobster bisque - this was a little too salty for me but I enjoyed the chunks of lobster Bone in rib-eye - we ordered this off menu and it was massive and included a side. We got it with the mushrooms on top and asparagus and mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes were super creamy and the sauce for the steak was very flavorful. I didn't really care for the sauce that came with the asparagus - kind of like thousand island. I wished we got steak knives to cut. The table knives were a little dull so it felt like I was tearing at the meat Chilean Sea Bass - this came recommended but I thought it was just ok. The coconut was overwhelming and the fish was a little rubbery Scallop risotto - i didn't try the scallops but I thought the risotto was a bit undercooked. That might be personal preference though Bananas foster - my husband got this free for his bday and planned to share with the group but it was so tasty he ended up finishing it. This was very good with the sweetness of the bananas, saltiness of the caramel, and crunch of the toffee Peanut butter pie - this was huge. It could easily satisfy 6-8 people. We visited the Tortoise Supper Club based on a friends recommendation for dinner. This did not disappoint! It's a moody upscale restaurant with amazing food! They start the table with bread stuffed with a herb cream cheese. Which is amazing! For dinner, my husband ordered the special of 6 shrimps and 6 oysters with the beef Wellington. He said it was all incredible! As the vegetarian, I ordered the chopped wedge with a side of frites. Both were alright, but not something you go to a steakhouse for. However the service was extremely professional and very good. Our waiter was one of our best we have ever had. When we were getting ready to leave, we asked if he recommended an Uber or taxi to travel in Chicago. He said he recommended a taxi and offered to get us one. He was incredible! We went to Tortoise Supper Club for dinner. The atmosphere was classy and elegant, and we were escorted to the table by the owner, a nice touch. They started us off with some complimentary bread stuffed with Gorgonzola cheese, which was crispy on the edges and soft and fluffy in the center, and I loved the cheese. For starters, we got the calamari and Caesar salad. The calamari was fairly standard, but the Caesar salad came with anchovies, which I was actually a fan of, although it was a polarizing option. Unfortunately, they were out of the filet mignon, which we were very disappointed about considering it was only 6:45. They should have a planned a bit better. The pork chop I had to order instead of the filet was thicccc though and had a really pleasant sweetened apple glaze. The broccolini it came with, on the other hand, was under seasoned (although I ate it anyway). The salmon was very tender and served atop flavorful creamed corn, a combination that I would not have thought of myself but greatly enjoyed. For dessert, we had their specialty: tortoise pie. The pie was a chocolatey base served in a pie crust and filled with a few walnuts. I absolutely adored this dessert; it was so decadent and delicious that I found myself savoring every bite so it didn't have to end even though I was absolutely stuffed. it was my first time checking out our their incredible $60 3-course Summer Restaurant Week Deal. We also got their oysters from Pine Point Maine that were fresh and medium on the saltiness level. Side note, this spot along with Gussie's Italian have the best bread in all of Chicago, its garlicky and I love the gorgonzola cheese thats sandwiched in between. The first courses we had were the lobster bisque which was viscous and came with a generous portion of a lobster claw. I had the steak tartare which the compilation of veggies and spices reminded me of giardiniera, really cool to see that incorporated in the dish. For the mains, we had their dover sole which was beautifully pan fried and drenched in a heavenly lemon butter sauce. It was light, but if you're going the comfort route, the prime skirt steak was fire. The caramelized onions over the steak were great and added some sweetness to the dish. The mashed potatoes were so creamy, and we had to get this to-go because dessert was next. The peanut butter pie is my favorite dessert here, you have to try it for yourself. The key lime pie cheesecake was nice and tarte, and the raspberry sauce added more complexity to the tartness.
