First off let me say that I feel blessed that even get to go out to places like this stand out supper club. So many cannot or just have no means of going to a place like Tortoise Supper Club. I didn't grow up getting to go to places such as this. I mean, most times we had enough but sometimes not. So I don't take for granted the allowance I have been granted to be at Tortoise. Service: impeccable! Servers are talented and know their stuff and truly deserve what they earn. Ambiance: superb! Decor and details of this spot are awesome. A classic supper club with old school chic. Sleek and cool. Cuisine: worth every cent. I enjoyed the scallops and a Caesar salad with a side of creamed spinach. Every bite was truly excellent. Now my dinner partners enjoyed steaks and Dover Dole and other entrees and they all looked delicious. Presentation was beyond excellent. We all enjoyed a ray of various desserts that were decadent and delicious. If you ever get a chance to try Tortoise Supper Club please do. You won't be sorry.

Tortoise is an ideal place to shell-abrate a special occasion. I brought my Missus here for her birthday. Valet parking was a snap; the $16 fee was competitive with SpotHero pricing (that can change). With its dark paneling and tasteful appointments, the main dining room is clubby, chic and very romantic. The bar and private dining rooms are equally inviting. We visited on a weeknight during a 'polar vortex' when there was no live music and only 4 other tables in the main room were occupied. Unfortunately, just one loud and obnoxious party made the room's noise level uncomfortable. The menu practically screams old school supper club: Old Fashioned. Relish tray. Prime rib. Beef Wellington. Dover sole. Michigan cherry pie. The lobster bisque, loaded with big hunks of lobster meat, is not to be missed. Our entrées were glazed salmon and seared scallops, and we substituted buttery mashed potatoes for the accompanying sides shown on the menu. Absolutely superb, and the portions were generous. Our desserts were key lime pie cheesecake and peanut butter pie. Each wedge was decadently rich and big enough to share, so we washed down half with Julius Meinl coffee and took the remainder home. Our server was especially attentive (well, he didn't have too many other tables to deal with), knowledgeable, and fun to chat with. The restaurant placed a clever birthday card on the table for my Missus and comped two glasses of champagne in addition to my Missus' dessert.

What a terrific place! I loved the impeccable service, the food, the drinks, the jazz trio, even the parking attendants! Sometimes restaurants are not attentive to women dining, not this one. The service was wonderful from start to finish. We went pretheater and came back for drinks after the show! Drinks were on point. Delicious. The stuffed cheese bread was surprising and the perfect start. We split a wedge salad which was tasty and a large portion. My friend said Chilean sea bass was awesome. My prime rib was perfectly cooked and was not overly salted (they did provide Larry's seasoned salt on the side if you like heavy salt). We finished with cherry pie ala mode. They have theater parking which was an added bonus! Looking forward to going back.

I made a reservation here for 13 people and they required a deposit of $10/person. They said if you have less people show up, they will keep the $10/person that you're missing. I thought that was a bit odd. The deposit was not put toward the final bill, instead it was returned to me (although, I had to call to ask them to refund it because it was not automatic). Otherwise, service was great. They were accommodating to a large party which was nice. The food was all around good, but not my absolute favorite. The mashed potatoes were stand out for me. I would skip the garlic bread. Although it looks great, it's nothing special.

I absolutely love the tortoise club. It's my go-to spot whenever I want to feel relaxed and comfortable with a homey meal and a drink. I highly recommend the Hydro Boston Bibb Salad, which is quite large, the lobster bisque, which is very creamy and filling on its own, and my absolute favorite menu item, the Braised Shirt Ribs. The short ribs with mashed potatoes and gravy with carrots are the perfect taste and textures. If you go early in the evening and get a booth, you can enjoy a comfortable dinner before it gets too crowded or if you want to do something else in the evening.

What a yummy and filling meal. We were able to make same day reservations on a Wednesday evening and were greeted with a hearty meal. Most of their steaks are 10oz which I believe is a pretty generous portion. To start we ordered the tortoise bread which is a cheesy crispy bread! Worth getting! We then decided to order all the side and were so glad our server recommended the cream spinach bc it was a winner. The texture isn't complete mush, there are chunks of spinach still noticeable which makes for a better bite. I ordered the beef Wellington which came wrapped in prosciutto, mushroom, and puff pastry. Initially the roast was juicy and delicious but as I got fuller the roast started to dry out, but nothing a little mayo couldn't fix. The portion was pretty generous and I could have left full eating half. To finish our table shared a peanut butter pie. It was light, creamy and had a salty bite from the pretzel crust. We had a lovely meal and would recommend :)

This update review has been a long time coming. I don't usually do updates to my original reviews as I have enough trouble keeping up with the current ones. However, I feel like this one is due for an upgrade. The Tortoise Supper Club (TSC) has become a repeat experience for us for holiday meals, with our first experience being during COVID 2020 for Mother's Day. They offered the most amazing take out meal at a price that I thought was pretty reasonable. I had to drive down to pick it up and they were so wonderful in bringing everything out to the car and making sure it was situated correctly so as not to spill over. We got a prime rib meal, which was supposed to be for two people, so I ordered two meals to cover me, The Doctor and The Queen. Well that turned out to be a mistake of sorts as one meal was plenty of food. But the leftovers did not go untouched. Since that first adventure, we have found ourselves spending Valentine's Day, Xmas Even and Thanksgiving, with T-Day being a regular event for us for the last several years. They have a very consistent menu that is quite delish and their Holiday buffet is out of this world. The big selling point for me is the AYCE cold seafood section with oysters and shrimp. I LOVE oysters and they have both east and west coast oysters, with east being my favorite. In addition to the oysters and shrimp (big size ones I might add), there is tuna poke, smoked salmon and a lovely lobster bisque soup. As for the buffet, everything is fresh and there is plenty of different foods for all to enjoy: prime rib, turkey breast, salmon, all of the sides, salads, breads, and appetizers. The one thing I notice is that they never let the serving dishes go down to the bottom of the pan, there are spotters who alert the kitchen immediately and a fresh pan of food appears. And I just want to note that their Beef Wellington Service is always spot on and the folks are always so pleasant and helpful. I remember there was one visit where I was craving a turkey leg and our server was able to go back into the kitchen and get me one....now that is service! And their Michigan Cherry Pie is delightful, but I feel like it was delish because I asked it for it to be warmed up (I don't like cold or room temp desserts). I think we we will start to expand our holiday adventures with TSC, thinking about New Year's Eve in 2026, the Tortoise Supper Club Pheasant Pie in October, and most definitely Mother's Day and T-Day.

Yum, two scoops to top off a yummy dinner!

The vibe is elegant yet casual, believe it or not. From the moment you enter, everything is on point. We were warmly greeted at the entrance, as we awaited fellow guests. Our waiter was a seasoned and consummate professional. Seriously. Attentive. Knowledgeable. Warm. We admit, we were a tad concerned at the candlelight, for its lack of a wide base. Our host said he was clumsy, so we opted to douse it just in case. We enjoyed their warm and tasty bread, a calamari appetizer, and ordered our feasts. No one was able to finish their generously served meal, so yes, we all took leftovers home! (I partially blame that on the truly delicious bread; I'm sure I ate one too many before dinner!) The braised short ribs were savory, and oh, so tender, atop buttery smashed potatoes and accompanied by veggies. And yes, it all reheated wonderfully as another meal in the hotel microwave;)! Despite not finishing our entrees, you can be sure we all opted in for dessert (albeit two scoops of ice cream was all I could manage). I wish I had taken more photos, but we were here for work and were starving... will try to come back again when we're in town for the next show!

I have not been here for dinner but the happy hour is great. We also got the relish tray which is a nice variety of different goodies and very filling. We particularly liked the pickles and pimento cheese. They also brought out their signature bread for free, which was cheesey, garlicky and very good.

This area nearby houses the corn cob condos and Legal Seafood w water views, they have live music on Friday and Saturday. Parking is only on the street and valet $16 up to 3 hours. We tried the expresso which was good. The cherry pie w ice cream was not good but the ice cream was good...and helped the taste. The crust was good and very thick for those who like thick crusts. But the part I did not like at all was the artificially colored and gelatin like filling along w the whole sweetened and preserved cherries. It was gooey and tasteless and the texture was weird. The really nice and romantic and the lady is nice and dark for your date especially on Valentine's Day..

Tortoise supper club has been on my list for awhile. It did not disappoint! Keene was more than welcoming when we arrived. Our server Jorge was just a delight. He was fun, engaging and went above and beyond. The holiday decor was so pretty! It was nice to hear some of the jazz music in the dining room. Our food was superb. The Beef Wellington was incredible. The drinks were tasty! I cannot wait to go back. What a great spot!

Super cool place and we ate at the bar. Our bartender provided excellent service and the food was top notch notch! We had the 14oz strip with peppercorn sauce - delicious, the Chilean sea bass, very good, mashed potatoes sooo good when cold outside like it was, and the broccoli which was just ok. The lobster bisque was outstanding! The cherry pie was also good but would have been phenomenal if served warm. All in all we were pleased with the service, vibe, drinks and food highly recommend!

such a fun night!!! we came here for our anniversary and it's a fun atmosphere with the live music. Food was all cooked great and really loved the mashed potatoes. taking off a star because our waitress was hard to get a hold of and we were going to order a second round of drinks but never got to because we couldn't find her to order them and she never came back to our table. I wish they also would have done something special for our anniversary (like hogsalt does with free dessert!) but all in all great food and fun place

Our main server, Billy, and his team could not have been better; available when you needed them and out of the way when you didn't. When my wife mentioned to one of the team, she wanted wine with our entree, Billy was there 10 seconds later with two reds for her to taste. The focaccia with beef tallow was suggested by everyone, we thought it was nice, but nothing special. We split the beef cheeks for another appetizer and it was spectacular. We also split a Ceasar salad that was good. Both of us ordered the rib eye and a side of whipped potatoes. Both were phenomenal. Nice touch with offering the option for the kitchen to slice it for you. At this point, we were pretty full and got lemon sorbet (not too sour, not too sweet) crème brûlée gelato (good) and because it was our 39th anniversary, he brought us an "Italian donut " (sugar donut with vanilla ice cream) that was great. I noticed another table getting the biscoff cheese cake, and carrot cake. They looked great and were HUGE. Coffee came a little late but that's being picky. I first went when it was still a huge, buzzy Chicago spot, and one of my most memorable dinners came after my high school graduation in 2003. I even got a speeding ticket on Lake Shore Drive with my grandmother in the back seat on the way to dinner, which still makes me laugh. Chicago was an especially fun place for Joe's to arrive. Open outcry trading was still a force, and the wealth creation around it was wild: people who had dropped out of high school could become millionaires in their twenties, while math PhDs from the University of Chicago could make fortunes in the same ecosystem. It was a golden era for hustle culture, when commerce idolized Tony Montana in a way that today is more likely to idolize Jamie Dimon or David Solomon. Death Row and Bad Boy ruled the airwaves, while Michael, Shaq, Kobe, and Allen Iverson defined the NBA. Basketball was so dominant in Chicago culture during my coming of age that I still map other things, including restaurants, to NBA teams. Joe's felt like the Miami Heat coming to Chicago in much the same way Smith & Wollensky represented the New York Knicks: each brought a recognizable piece of its hometown culture into another major city. Joe's brought real South Florida sizzle to Chicago, and it landed at exactly the right moment. Going there felt like an occasion. Florida took longer for me to understand in full. My family has roots in the state going back decades, farther north along the Atlantic coast, and I didn't visit Miami until March 2007, when my sister started graduate school in Coral Gables. That trip began my love affair with Miami and helped me understand why the original Joe's was such an institution. A close family friend's father spent time around Miami in the 1960s and 1970s. He knew local fishermen who caught stone crabs, which gave me an appreciation for the older South Florida culture around the food, separate from Joe's own history. Another Joe's memory captures an entirely different moment. Looking through my OpenTable history, my July 31, 2008 reservation at Joe's in Chicago is the earliest reservation I can find at a restaurant that is still open today. I was 23, working at UBS, preparing to move to New York while the firm was already on fire from its mortgage losses, and Lehman would file for bankruptcy just weeks later. I was broke but wildly aspirational, dreaming about dinners at Balthazar, begging my way past the doors at Cain and Tenjune, hoping to drink for free, and trying to meet women comically far out of my league. Through all of those memories, the restaurant itself has been remarkably consistent. The stone crab claws are incredible, the seafood is excellent, and Joe's holds its own among Chicago's serious steakhouses. The room has traditionally felt a little more formal than Miami, with bow ties, polished service, and a darker old-school steakhouse rhythm, while still being genuinely welcoming. Finish with the key lime pie. Years later, my wife and I held our wedding reception at RPM Seafood, another Lettuce restaurant, then ate at the original Joe's during our honeymoon in Miami during COVID days later, which felt like a fitting circle back. In sheer range of venues, repeatability of quality and atmosphere, and consistency of hits, Lettuce is the gold standard in Chicago, with some of that same reach in Vegas and DC. I've been extraordinarily privileged in my exposure to hospitality, and I still repeatedly admire Rich Melman's model, taste, and execution, now carried forward by the next generation of the family. Joe's is a prime example: world-class, durable, unmistakably Chicago, and absolutely somewhere I want to return next time I'm in town with some dough to spend. While Joe's may not be French, this place still earns my highest marks: très bien!

Had dinner at Joe's last week...service is still excellent and the restaurant is still great…read moreoverall, but the food has definitely declined in quality unfortunately. The baked potatoes and other sides were still delicious but the steaks came out dry and overcooked. The quality was very much lacking. Our waiter was kind enough to remake both steaks, which was very much appreciated and the second round was better but still not as good as we remembered. We'll likely return ... hopefully this was just a one time problem?
