We started coming to Tortugas probably 15 years ago and it never disappoints! Super friendly service - we came during the busy lunch rush today and were able to sit at the bar. We got tasty shrimp & clam steamers to start. The shark attack brought me back to my childhood with the souvenir shark / grenadine dirty Shirley moment. The special tuna sandwich was delicious as was the cocoloco chicken! As always, the ambiance here is fun for families! Our meal was so great it warranted buying t-shirts, mugs & stickers for the whole family. Totally worth the drive from Southern Shores this week! read more

The service is typical of the beach or shore community... the server just doing their job, low level of enthusiasm for being server in should a nice environment. Everyone helps in keeping the light on (wink wink) not just the locals. Atmosphere has an island, Bahamas vibe to it which is cool... the food is nothing special... Woah there was a long wait! Small restaurant so not surprised on a weekend. We came here since I am a vegetarian and wanted more than a salad at a restaurant. They had several options I ordered the house margarita. First time I've had one in a beer pint glass. A bit odd but I guess more bang for my buck? Salted rim wasn't done well - it wasn't on the entire rim and had already started dripping down the glass. Bar was busy, so I get it, but this was a shame. Was a bit sweeter than expected. I got the bean/rice burrito. It came with BBQ sauce. I don't think I would get it again but it wasn't bad. The BBQ sauce had a kick, so if you're not a fan of spice, ask for it to be not a lot or on the side. Server was super nice. Walked in at 8:15 with a party of four. A lady with short curly hair just stared at me--no greeting or anything. I asked her for a table, and she told me their wait time exceeds their closing time. A buzzy, iconic place. We ordered our food to go with very simple requests - no sour cream on the nachos, no goat cheese on the quinoa bowl. The hostess who took the order could not have been nicer and said no problem. We ate there on a recent OBX trip, were seated at the bar immediately, and enjoyed a dinner of steamed shrimp as appetizer, followed by fish tacos (me) and crab cake (wife). Cocktails were excellent, and their selection of local brews on tap was amazing (despite NC bizarre rules where they can't pour a new drink until you've finished your first). We came here based on Triple D and was hoping for a good experience. We waited about 45 minutes for a table but when we were called, the woman at the podium just kind of pointed to the bar area and expected us to know where to sit. When we tried to clarify, she seemed very annoyed that she had to get out of her chair to show us to our seats. Not exactly the best first impression. The place has a nice chill vibe with lots of fun things on the walls to look at. Our bartender was nice. I had the fish tacos which were just ok, nothing special but the fries were great. Hubs had the tortola chicken which was a very nice portion! We probably wouldn't return for dinner, maybe just for drinks and apps. read more

My family has been coming here since about 1990. Always amazing food, service, and ambiance. This is always our first stop when we arrive into OBX. I ordered my go to, the Cheeseburger with bacon, lettuce, tomato, raw onion, and a pickle. With fries of course! Perfection! The fries have cracked salt and pepper on it. Never been here after years and years in OBX. Obviously this place has massive hype around it, being a local spot that was featured on diners, drive-in's, and dives. There is always a wait so be prepared for that, we were sat in about 45 min. I got the bajan burger and my wife got the big wave Dave chicken sandwich. Others at our table got the scallops, tuna burrito and a Greek salad. Everything was really good, the only down side was the chicken sandwich was incredibly tough and hard to eat. We were playing volleyball on the beach and enjoying ourselves doing so. Someone looked up places to play beach volleyball and so we went to check it out. They have two courts and both were open. The sand is awesome, and they have rakes and straightens to keep it that way. There are nets around the courts so that out of bounds balls usually stay in bounds. After playing three games, we decided to grab some lunch. Now, I was so happy with the courts that I figured I would grab some food as a sign of gratitude for hosting the volley ball courts. I ordered the Jerk Beef Flank Steak. It came with beans and rice. This was one of the best meals I had while in outer banks. I don't remember the name slim redhead that served us, but I wish I could because she was awesome also. Next year, if we end up in OBX, I hope this review does make this Diamond in the not-so-rough blow up so big that we cant get in there. I don't write reviews, hardly ever, but this place was awesome and I wanted to share with anyone who is looking for a cool place in a beach atmosphere, that has ridiculously good food. My son (21) who is my eating buddy, ordered a chicken sandwich (think it had apples on it) and he was extremely satisfied with his also. Everyone around the table enjoyed their food. Visiting town with family and was recommended to try this spot- would be nice if we even got in. My nephew was finishing a soccer game with his Dad and we wanted to grab drinks for 20minutes before ordering dinner. The host lady on Wednesday evening said we had to wait for our full party. After we explained our situation she said we can get drinks at the end of the bar where there's no place for our senior father and 2 children to properly sit. She couldn't even look us in the eye and said we had to wait for our full party before seating. There was people but nobody else waiting. They had tables open and just wanted to stick by policy. This is the place ! We are staying in Nags Head and drove the 4 miles, found a good parking spot. We put our name in but got a seat a the bar right away. Good local vibe and experienced patrons. We split the the Clam Chowder cup and Sea Scallops special with mashed potatoes and green beans. Excellent. They have a good t shirt selection and we had good interaction staff and other folks. This place is always busy during peak times. I am not sure if they take any reservations. When we came here, we waited for 30 minutes to get a table. We had a Cayman Conch Fritters. I had conch fritters for the first time. I enjoyed the texture that gave me a little chewiness. I had a Coco Loco Chicken because it is getting a good review on Yelp. I am glad that I had it. It reminded me of having that in Hawaii. The chicken was nicely fried and gave me coconuts flavor. My husband had a tuna steak. It was not his favorite because the flavor was very bland. My daughters had a fish taco and a chicken tender. They enjoyed them all. It was nice to get Caribbean food in OBX. I highly recommend this place to try something different. read more

2:30 PM. Group of 8 of us walk in for beers and a shot because we just got in town. Not a soul sitting at the bar and there's about 25 stools. Bartender said "no you have to order lunch at the bar." We said ok then can we grab some oysters? He hit us with an "I guess" insuating that he didn't want us too. Sounds like an easy 200 dollars in 20 minutes to spend at an EMPTY bar for them. Tortuga's is one of our go to spots on OBX trips, for its steamer platters & fun atmosphere, but this time missed the mark a little. Drink selection was good & affordable. The veggies & shrimp were both good, but you do have to peel & devein all of the shrimp yourself, just a heads up. While food looked good; the clams weren't cleaned well & the crab legs were much smaller than in years past & overcooked. Typically we've also received wet wipes with steamer meals, but those seemed to be missing this time around too. We also ordered an appetizer but that didn't come out until well after all of our entrees, which was weird. Our waiter was kind, quick & attentive, but not overbearing. We appreciated his service & we only had to wait about 35-40 mins to be seated which is impressive for OBX summers. We'll still try again in the future but hope some things go back to how they used to be! read more

This place epitomizes don't judge a book by its cover! Would you expect to have such a delicious jerk pork chop here? No, but that's exactly what happened! The jerk pork chop came with a type of relish you put on top that helped to congeal the flavors. I got it with mashed potatoes and green beans which were seasoned well. We came here for dinner on our last night in OBX and it seems we had saved the best for last. There was no wait when we came, but that's also probably because we came on the later side of dinner time. We were able to stroll my daughters wheelchair up an accessibility ramp so that was a plus. We were also seated at a booth kid if out of the way that allowed us to pull the stroller up to the table as well. a bit underwhelming! every time my family and i travel to the area we try to go to tortuga's lie but the wait is always overwhelmingly long. finally we were able to get there at a time where we didn't have to wait for a table (about 15 minutes after their opening time). we were seated and the service was definitely friendly! the part that disappointed fell with the food. i went with my family of 6, and we all tried different things. i ordered myself a teriyaki burger, which was honestly really good. i wasn't craving seafood, so i got the next best thing and i was pleasantly surprised that it was good. however the rest of my family ordered seafood and left disappointed. the Coco Loco Chicken was honestly kind of dry and flavorless. there was a tuna wrap special that day, and the fish was definitely odd tasting. i'm sure it was supposed to be raw, but it was really blue, and the size of it compared to the rest of the filling was too big. it was flavorless, and my partner that ordered it left with a stomachache. i really wish i loved it, but it's definitely a bit overhyped. definitely not worth waiting a while in line. read more

We went there at 6 pm, the Monday after Easter. Seems everyone else had the same plan. We were told there would be about a 1-hr wait and we told them we would except any available seating; bar counter, outdoor, indoor. This was off-season as they were not fully staffed and the outdoor bar was still closed. But the kitchen staff must have been fully staffed because when we sat down for dinner, our apps came right out and I bet we didn't wait more than 20 minutes for our meal. We had a crab dip appetizer first, served with toasted pita triangles. My wife had a 1/2 lb spicy peel-n-eat shrimp and I had the loco coco chicken, served with the traditional jerk spiced salsa, fried rice and black beans. We ended the evening sharing a key lime pie. This is a popular restaurant. Not sure why. Our party of 6 arrived in a Tuesday at around 6 for dinner. We had a short wait. Ended up going out back and grabbing a drink while we waited. A $10 margarita (premixed) in a plastic cup isn't my idea of a "good" drink. Should of gone with the can or bottle of beer. We sat outside. Waitress was quick and helpful. Did not notice any problem with flies. Entree prices were (in my opinion) kinda on the steep side. My fish and black bean wrap was OK. Nothing special. Hubby had the steamed shrimp. Again .......nothing special. I liked their fiesta ware plates. We wouldn't go back. Too many other places to choose from. read more
