Going out to a restaurant in Malibu takes either being there for some other reason to begin with, living there or hearing some scuttle-butt about a place in this area. No one goes to Malibu to dine for the hell of it (unless it's Nobu). Malibu is close to nothing and far from everything. My reason for dining here this night, was a semi high school reunion with my old crew of troublemakers, one of whom lived in Malibu and cannot drive at night (some vision thing). I voted to go Nobu but Tra Di Noi won. The restaurant is nice enough. There's not a lot of charm, very little warmth and not very crowded. I could only imagine the hords of people at Nobu. The staff was more than pleasant and eager to please and the food was really "OK. Not "Ok" but really "OK"! Here is where the review gets finicky: If I lived, worked or played in Malibu, I would frequent Tra Di Noi's and for sure give it a 4 Star review. But I don't. I live in Los Angeles and have easy access to an Angelini Osteria or Ouvo, or Dan Tanas or Forma or........the list goes on. I would be stuck on this remote island called Malibu with not many choices and a long drive to the for mentioned restaurants. My Caesar salad here at Tra Di Noi was about as good as the salad bar at Appleby's. My lasagna bolognese couldn't compare to a Sotto's in West L.A. but was better than "OK". Let me put it this way; In Lahina, Maui I am way more tolerant of the food at any of their restaurants than I would be in say, Chicago. I have mixed feelings about eating here. Food is good but pricey (not always worth it). They serve decent wine, and usually you'll get good service but it's not consistent. It's a nice spot for families or a date night. The best-kept secret is the lunch kiosk/side window by the parking lot. Best soup of the day, made fresh daily. This restaurant has excellent food. Tried for the first time on the recommendation of friends. Service was excellent thanks to LUIGI. He was very attentive, enthusiastic and accommodating! The atmosphere was very pretty with high functioning heat lamps overhead. The food was fantastic. The bread and pesto was spectacular. The Spaghetti Carbonara was the best we've ever had. We substituted the broccoli with green beans and they were amazing as well as the chicken parmigiana which was good. As a local Malibu resident I have a tremendous amount of love for our local restaurants. There are MANY gems! This, however is NOT one of them! Our family ordered from their side window, by mistake. We thought to sit at their table (same restaurant) to continue w/ a glass of wine and dessert for the kids and was told by Julio to sit somewhere else. The food is beautiful. Fresh, delicious. Except when it is not. Not only did i have a hair in my food today and they accused me if it being mine before finally exchanging it! But also, the service is hit and miss. My waiter today had serious attitude problems. And when I complained, the owner says that in 31 years working with him no one has complained. Really? I have been coming to Tra di Noi since my college days and I'm glad that they are able to keep the standard time after time. Here is the breakdown: MENU They have good wine selection if you are wine lover and they the food is very taste. The pappardelle, the gnocchi and the steak dish are delicious. Every time I go there the food is well done and delicious and I never have to worry about it. Keeping up with the standard is very hard and they do it. SERVICE Great service everything time I go. The consistency is great and I'm glad to see that. Very friendly, always checking up on us to see what we need. DECOR When you go there, seat outside. The patio is very nice and it is great balance of ambiance from the classy restaurant to the noise of the kids playing at the background. OVERALL Very cute spot with great food and service. On the way home we stopped at Terrible's in Barstow for gas. They sell pizza in the shop there and I guarantee you, without having tried it, it is better than what I had here. Lucky's was strongly recommended to us but, for reasons we still can't quite understand, we came here. Don't make the same mistake. read more

The cáprese salad was not tasty... it had black olives (which I'm not used to), ONE BASIL leaf, tomatoes, and mozzarella, and the oil drizzle which was just that.... oil, I was expecting the balsamic vinegar oil. So lacking in taste, for sure! I had the parapadelle mari monti... it was gross! Very lackluster, presentation was awful and the shrimp looked so un-gourmet--it was rubbery and awful. The Diet Coke was probably the only thing that was delicious there. Also, the service here was unfriendly. For a party of two, $110 was spent (no alcoholic beverages were purchased, either) . Having patronized this wonderful restaurant many times, I wanted to post this positive review, and a special shout out to our cheerful, attentive server this evening, Reggie. I cannot imagine anyone having a less than delightful experience with either the staff of the food---certainly that has never been my experience! I've had the joy of entertaining many of my close friends at this, my favorite Italian haunt, Tra di Noi, and always been delighted by a new and delicious dish served by ever gracious wait staff. One Saturday night the owner came by our table and chatted with us for quite some time, making us feel quite at home, as if honored guests! I invariably recommend this charming eatery to my friends to bring their visiting families for a special meal, away from the crowded, commercial establishments farther to the south. As you can read better in more specific detail in other 5-star reviews the various unique dishes from their extensive menu are a culinary delight. The Ravioli Rosa I enjoyed tonight is divine; a spinach and cheese stuffed pasta in a creamy tomato sauce was deeply satisfying, just to name one item. Preceeded by a simple cesar salad with delicious house dressing, and finishing with the smoothest cappuccino I've ever had, made this the most satisfying restaruant meal in recent memory. read more

I just had no less than the best truffle dish in my life. Albeit, I never had truffles shaved into my dish, so perhaps it's just a function on that. Still the truffles were shaved a plenty, and the perfectly al denti orrechiette pasta with fontina cheese scraped from a wheel of cheese and peas was pure ambrosia. Although not the ideally paired glass of wine for it, the moscato was perfect too. My wife got a personal pizza with argula and prosciutto, which was quite delicious as well. You'll find all the expected favorite hits on the menu: chicken parmigiana, etc. Wine is extremely overpriced; for example, a bottle of Pessimist--an average red that's $18 at Costco--is $70 here! we were guests and dining with our family and my son needed to use the restroom. so he got up and walked towards it and i saw the manager naked manny run towards him chasing him to the restroom. so obviously i saw something was wrong and then he yelled at him in front of everyone that he can not use the restroom unless you are dining (which we were) so my son tried explaining to him that we are dining and thats our table and he tried to kick my son from the restaurant. so i went up to him a and spoke to him and he was super rude did not even apologize he just said that he does Not allow people who are not dining. even though he saw our table. Not to mention our waiter was confused why manny the phsyxo manager did not let my son use the restroom. And he did not stand up for us.
