Look - I'm from Reno where AYCE is the standard, so when I heard that there was an AYCE place nearby in Washington, I was super excited. It was evident pretty quickly walking in that this restaurant was to Sushi as Sizzlers is to a steakhouse, but for AYCE sushi at the price of two standard rolls anywhere else in the market, it was understandable. It is very clear that this restaurant makes it's money off of quantity and not quality, and you need to go into it knowing that or you will be disappointed. The menu is small and very limited in selection, with most of the rolls being almost identical. They also only have nigiri and appetizers on the dinner menu, not the lunch menu. There was nothing exceptionally notable on the menu in terms of uniqueness or novelty, although they did have tempura zucchini and asparagus. We ordered several rolls, but my favorite was the Pheonix, which was doused in Ponzu sauce and had a spicy salt mix on it which made for a super flavorful roll. The service was hit and miss. Evelynn was our sushi chef and she was extremely personable and careful with my husband's shellfish allergy which was awesome. Our server, Justin, was also really friendly and kept coming back to check on us and never letting our plates stack too high or drinks go empty. That said, service of food was extremely slow, and the staff were having loud and argumentative conversations that could be heard across the dining area because of the open kitchen. Overall, it was ok for what it was. It's definitely not the best all you can eat place I've ever been to, but given the market in this area primarily being a la carte, it's a nice option to have. If you want a lot of sushi for cheap, this is your place to go. read more

Uh tonight's meal was just ok. For Valentine's Day it was practically empty. We made reservations for 730pm, apparently we were told earlier that they were booked, um not really lol Guessing the chef tonight was not having a good night. One of the rolls we ordered was Sushi Town, now we've had that before and this roll has small chopped onions in it. The food was amazing! By far the best go to place around for sushi. The staff was super friendly, even being as busy as they were. They were able to make sure to interact with all those there and keep track of what they were making. It's pretty exciting to know that Trapper's is back in Tacoma. It's right across from a 7/11 and below new housing buildings. There's a parking garage with limited parking for dine in guests, or street parking where you can find it. The inside is new and sparkly with better counter tops for the bar compared to the old ones. There's plenty of tables, booths, and space at the bar as well. When seating became available for us, I noticed how spacious the sushi bar was. Normally at other locations, you feel very close. Perhaps they spaced it out a bit more because of Covid. We were greeted by our sushi chef right away, and placed in a couple of rolls. Our server was no where to be found within the first 15 mins. I did take a look around, and they looked a little short handed. Our server was very nice and attentive when he did come around, so the wait didn't bug me so much. Our sushi chef was also attentive and pleasant as well. They now place any orders on a tablet that's hung right in front of them. I suppose it's to help them with the orders they take from the guests so they don't forget. Our rolls came out before our beverages. We also ordered some nigiri, more rolls, hand rolls, squid salad and shrimp tempura. The squid salad was good. Shrimp tempura was tasty and crispy. I believe the nigiri could of came out better. The fish are pre cut for faster service, which I understand, that's their method. From personal experience, the slices of fish for rolls are different for sashimi/nigiri. The salmon and tuna nigiri we got was just an uneven cut of fish placed on some rice. It looked a little sad. The wasabi for me that day wasn't very fresh. You can tell by the color. Even trying to mix it with some soy sauce was a bit of a struggle. I just added more wasabi into every bite. Some of the menu has changed. For example, for the AYCE Dinner, some appetizers have been removed, such as the soft shell crab. There are also some new rolls along with the good old classic ones. Prices did go up quite significantly. Lunch for AYCE is now $24.95. Dinner for AYCE is now $34.95. I would probably give this location another shot maybe in 6 months, but for now, not my favorite location. I'll let them work out their kinks. read more

Come here all the time for the trapper and mt rainier rolls it's really good and freshly made by the chefs in the back. if you're still worried about how it's cooked you can sit up at the bar in front of you and the chefs will make it right in front of you. The restaurant is clean and entertaining with TVs and art around the place. i highly recommend this location. read more

We always enjoy going to Trappers and have done their all you can eat and regular dine in many times at this location. I have never had a roll that did not taste fresh and very flavorful. I especially like their rolls made their garlic sauce like the Andromeda and Marvelous. My husband likes anything with a kick to it and has had them custom make him something when it was not busy and we were at the bar. The menu can be a bit daunting so my recommendation is, take your time and read the descriptions and then decide. And get the gyoza, it's amazing. read more

For those less adventurous with Sushi and not really for Sashimi (raw fish , no rice or toppings). I didn't have any comparison other than a Japanese sushi house, and there is no comparison. That said, much more accommodating and will help you with learning chop sticks, with genuine friendly staff. I ordered the Sashimi appetizer, which is 6 pieces, 2 each of salmon, yellowtail, and tuna, or all the same type for $14.95. From the word on the street, corporate got rid of some deals and other that are causing regulars to rethink. What matters to me is quality fish at a good price, and they still have some amazing deals. Also, the restaurant is spotless! Music is 80's and a little loud but, I am a older person. All in all , Trappers has an audience. I want a healthy lunch which is cost effective, and quality sushi for lunch. I didn't grow up with fast food and TV dinners. I am quality-protein centered and slight on discretionary funds. For this reason and their All you can eat sushi deals, I gave them a 4 star. Very few places that are "all Sushi" exist in Tacoma. And most people don't want a restaurant where you can order all types of Asian food out of 1 kitchen. Remember, Sushi is an Art form of food. read more

Nice service, decent enough prices. You'll be getting 100% American sushi, complete with gummy rice and overwrought recipes. Nothing unexpected, so I didn't take it much into account when writing this review. The girl at the front is just completely oblivious. I come in to pick up my food on time and she hasn't even given the receipt to the cooks. Okay whatever. Im sitting and waiting for the food and when it finishes I have to wait for her to finish eating and reading her book for her to notice Im still here. Total 36 minutes in the lobby. Trappers sushi isn't even close to the authentic sushi restaurants. The menu is full of odd combinations, and unsavory flavors. The service is pretty decent, ambiance could be worse, but overall I haven't been impressed with the food or options any of my visits to Trappers. Experience it for your self, you may be new to sushi and not know quality difference. read more

My wife and I tried All You Can Eat Sushi Dinner. We mainly tried appetizers and Nigiri. The server was friendly and stopped by often to take care of us. The sushi chef courteously offered as much sushi as we wanted. Since there was no time limit, we stayed there for one and a half hours. So I've been to the one by the southern center mall and the place is nice and clean. The chef's were super friendly and attentive but the waitress not so much. Took her a minute to ft to us to get our order for everything we asked ummm I don't know was her answer. Took our drink order and didn't come back until the end of our dinner then came back super quick to collect the tip we left for the chef's. I recently went to the Tacoma one and it's a bit smaller but a pet peeve was we couldn't get all you can eat unless we sat at the bar. We had three kids with us all under 3 and couldn't be accommodated. It is very inconvenient and annoying as the adults want to do all you can eat but can't because we have to sit at the bar and with a stroller, two car seats and a toddler we couldn't which is fine but why can't we sit at a table or booth and still get all you can eat?! read more

The sushi is decent not top of the line (u price is appropriate for the quality) and the prices actually reflect that. The rice is shit though, I don't know how they get the rice wrong...but it could be the water because it's the worst drinking water I've ever drank in Washington...so I just stick to the alcohol and bring my own bottle of water. Update: I received a yelp message from Trappers Sushi asking me to contact them so they could learn more. I have contacted them three times and have not gotten one replay, so again, sushi good, management not so much. Beware Before You Go. This was our go to, but we just left - for the last time - without even getting our lunch. All of the staff are great, and we love the food, but the way they have the front counter person assigned is hard to watch and difficult to endure. Today for example, and this is similar to the last 3 times we've come, we entered, after lunch rush and were the only ones waiting. About 75% of the tables were empty. The nice hostess said, I'll clear a table for you and seat you right away. She then goes to the one table with anything left over on it and gathers the glasses and takes them to the kitchen. As she comes back, she passes the line chefs and picks up an Uber order and beings it to the front area, does the necessary work to put it in bags, goes back to the front to get condiments, returns to the prep area, finishes bagging the take out, and then hands it to the Uber driver. She then goes back to the table she is clearing for us and gathers the plates, takes the, into the kitchen, comes out a fire minutes later and repeats almost exactly the fulfillment process for the first Uber order except they want to change the order so she takes the new order, walks back to the cheers, submits the order, gets a cup and goes to fill a soda for another Uber driver who has shown up, but can't get the soda machine to work, so another person fills it up while she watches, then she comes back to the Uber pick up and starts to bag up that order. Out table all the while is about 10 feet away, in the midst of fully cleared tables, et only half cleared. We watched her (as we stood at the front counter) again go back to the kitchen and on the way back stop to clean the sushi bar counter and that was it for us. 18 minutes after we were told let me clear a table and get you seated, we left. Now, this is not her fault. It was not the other hostesses fault the last few times. It is the fault of the owners and management to put on one person the job of host, bus person, Uber orders, etc. I am only leaving this review here because I have sent comments to the manager and Corp each time and have gotten zero response. The front of the house is where the first impression is made and it is a bad one. It seems as if a high percentage of their business is Uber or other take out and that is where they put their priorities. Yes, they are short staffed, but this is very poor allocation, inviting disgruntled former customers and what I suspect is a huge turnover for this position. read more

I can not believe grown adults are bickering about this restaurant like they are 5 years old. I have always been very sad after the original trappers left tacoma, but i do see the mass effort the employees put in... and just saying this is a place where most staff get paid minimum wage, to then produce a "premium" quality restaurant. You people need to figure out how to be more grateful. I have become very close with many of the servers and hosts, to find out that they are all young and hard workers. This location has a few kinks that need to be fixed but overall, the compassion of everyone there is what sells it for me. STOP whining you babies, because the food is delicious. Giving three purely off customer service. Came the Tacoma location to eat the buffet (I was craving sushi on the plane earlier) . One seat was open at the all you can eat. The server told me that I couldn't sit there because there was a party of two waiting. WTH? So instead of just seating me we got into a debate about there policy of first come first serve. Which made no sense still so instead of having to try and talk to the manager I just left. I did not want to make a scene. But that made me sad I wanted sushi! read more

This trappers used to be really good but when i just went in this last time they never even brought my gyoza and when i asked for a box for my sushi they brought me 1 tiny square box when they usually bring the long rectangular boxes. I ended needing 2 square boxes to fit all my food in it. On top of all this, when it was time to pay for me and my family they asked if i had a phone number with them, mind you the bill was well over 100$ so it was pretty important to me to get points for these meals. When i told her my phone number she said that phone number didn't exist for them, so i typed in my email and it said that it didn't exist either, i tried multiple time and i even tried my full name and my wife's phone number but nothing worked. I've had a trappers account for years and have always gotten points for my meals but it's almost like they just wiped my account and i know for a fact that i had enough points on my account to have gotten a huge chunk off the bill...before they deleted it that is. So waitress basically said she didn't know what else to tell me bc i didn't have an account with them so i spent all that money and didn't get any credit for it. Let me start by saying the food was great. The service not so much. The hostess was lost on what tables were available, inconsistent wait times were given to everybody that came in, and it seems like they were short a busser. Waited about 20 minutes for our drinks because they "lost the ticket", hair in my girlfriend's drink, and the bartender was more interested in watching the football game, than making drinks. The guy beside me didn't get the beer he ordered for about 25mins. It took another 15mins to even get our servers attention so we could pay and leave. I guess the conversation they were having by the computer was more important, because there was a lot of laughter. As good as the food was, we'll never go back to that location. read more
