This was unfortunately my least favorite restaurant we ate at while visiting San Francisco. We had just gotten into town starving and checked in at the Hilton near by. This place is In Walking distance and we were craving pasta so we gave it a shot. They were able To seat us right away. Our waitress had zero and I mean zero personality. I hate it when a waitress walks up and says are you ready. Not hello, welcome, here are the specials,have you been in before?, may name is. At least one of those would be nice. We ordered bread (at a charge) she didn't tell us there wouldn't be enough for everyone at the table in one order but it tasted good and was served with oil and vinegar. We also ordered two of the smallest martinis that were not shaken well enough I have ever seen at restaurant in my life. Cool glasses for port wine perhaps but not a martini. Everyone's pasta was lacking. Nothing about it was special. We weren't offered cheese, or even salt and pepper. Wasn't even offered pepper or Parmesan on my Caesar salad. We had to ask a few times for our water jugs to be refilled. We paid our hefty bill and left a little disappointed that we didn't choose a different place as we only had a couple of days in town to try the local restaurants. read more

There, we yelped for restaurants for dinner. We were craving Italian food, and Tratto was the closest with reasonable prices and good ratings. Surprisingly, it was not that crowded, so there was no wait when we got there. I asked for bread, and was told that I had to purchase it. This has happened to me twice in SF! Whatever happened to free bread at Italian restaurants? It's one of my favorite parts of the dining experience! It was $3, which I made myself ok with, BUT the bread was SO DRY. I love focaccia, but this one was oddly dense and oily. So there went my $3. Spinach Tagliatelle ($16): I love how there are so many places in the Bay Area that have HOMEMADE pasta. Back home, there are hardly any. I pretended I was being healthy, ordering a spinach pasta. Honestly, couldn't taste the difference-it still tasted like normal pasta. So less guilt, with the same, great taste! The three-meat sauce was so good-it wasn't to salty, and not too clumpy. Perfect ratio of meat sauce to pasta. I was so hungry and wiped this dish clean, which I haven't been doing lately because portions are always so big. But this was just so addicting, and I hadn't eaten since brunch. I'd come back for the pasta. Pappardelle ($14): Soft, silky, wide, ribbony noods. Stole a bite of my friend's dish-definitely ordering it next time. Pricing is not too bad for homemade pasta! The service was SO SLOW! Our food came out in a timely manner, but our waitress did not walk by frequently enough. We asked another random server for more water, and had to wait a long time for the check and for her to come back to pick it up and process it. Really solid Italian restaurant in Union Square, which I will certainly frequent again before a show at the Curran. I adored my carbonara, served with house-cured guanciale, favas, peas and pecorino and my other three dining companions were pretty happy about their burger served with crispy prosciutto and fried egg on top. They were wondering if it was a travesty to order a burger in an Italian restaurant but the waiter reassured us it was delicious and he was right! Also worth ordering are the olives (huge portion compared to what you usually get as an app) and the bruschetta topped with burrata, favas, and peas. In case you're wondering, yes, I'm obsessed with favas (but the liver and chianti pairing wasn't an option). Our waiter was very dedicated and made sure we were able to get everything we desired in time to make our 8pm show, which was much appreciated. When my friend's burger arrived cold in the center, and definitely not medium well, he had it fixed in minutes. For how busy it was, we felt they did quite a good job of keeping things on track. I always struggle to find a place to eat around the area because my favorite hole-in-the-walls don't take reservations, and the places that do feel like overpriced tourist traps. Plus, there are so many stuff hotel restaurant options. The husband has a real dislike of the hotel restaurant, which technically this kind of is, but whatever, it was hotel-adjacent. I've discovered if it has a side door, like this one, we can pull one over on him and he won't know the difference... Especially if the food is tasty. :) read more

I tried to order a cocktail but couldn't because their bartender apparently starts at 2pm and no one there could make a drink. Food was mediocre at best. I had lunch at Barbacco the next day and it was on another level - food, service, everything. Sounds like Tratto may have a good dinner service, targeting the pre-show crowd. Loved this spot when we came to SF a couple weekends ago. Their gnocchi was knock-your-socks-off good and I loved the house-made Italian soda (blood orange). My husband and I also shared the foccacia and I stole a bite of his braised short rib. So good. Not a weak spot in the entire meal. The service was great and staff was friendly. I had to knock a star off because of the service, it took a very long time for a waiter to help us and they were not the most friendly. Even though they gave us free focaccia, it did not make up for it as the focaccia was not that good (I definitely make a better one myself). Though I will say the pappardelle I did order was delicious, a great chew to the noodle and I liked the simple tomato sauce. Miserable hostess, but quite nice ambiance- dim lighting, interesting decor and a Mafia film projected on the bar wall. House red was decent, fritto misto (actually eat the fried lemons- they're tasty) had a gorgeous batter to it, butter lettuce and avo/hazelnut salad was fresh as can be. Gnocchi was hearty w some beautifully braised beef, swiss chard cappelletti (8 pieces) were surprisingly filling -topped with a very rich mushroom sauce. Tratto serves up some de-lish Italian cuisine and cocktails in a casual, unpretentious environment (and walking distance from A.C.T., the Curran Theater, and other entertainment venues). I took my friend here recently for a birthday lunch. We split the Gem Caesar Salad, the Fried Chicken Thigh Panini, some Parmesan Truffle Fries, and a Pizza Margherita. As I'm writing this now, I realize we probably ordered WAY too much food (I guess my eyes are bigger than my stomach). But man oh man, everything was terrific. To wash it all down, I had their El Negrito cocktail (tequila, Galliano Aperitivo, Averna, yuzu liqueur, and lemon bitters). It's essentially a tequila Negroni. Loved it! This place wasn't bad. Came here on a Friday night and it was relatively easy to make reservations through Open Table for a party of four. Right off the bat, the waiter asked if we had a show to catch at 8pm. They must mostly have theater-goers who come to this place. We actually came here too out of convenience - only one block away from the theaters. Got the bruschetta/burrata appetizer, the canneloni, and two pizzas (mushroom truffle and prosciutto something). Everything was A-OK; the mushroom truffle pizza was probably the best thing. Service was good! Appreciated that they got us out of the restaurant in time. While waiting for a concert at the Warfield theater we popped in here for drinks and appetizers. Excellent service right as we walked in - grab a table by the windows if you can do you can people watch. Prince, our waiter, was attentive and gave excellent recommendations. We had the meatballs and the margarita pizza. The cocktails were out of this world - if anything is on special, try it! Waiter was incredibly friendly without being too overbearing. My date had the espresso martini - wasn't the best she's had but was good. Excellent wine selection too. Def a good spot for a cute intimate date night, drinks with gals, or a simple and good dinner. Whoa! First of all, we booked a 5:00PM reservation which was right when they opened (Friday) and we were greeted with a warm welcome from the General Manager. This restaurant was so gorgeous, which we knew from their Instagram, and the service was fantastic. Highly recommend the "Campari Loves Margarita" cocktail, especially if you like tequila and grapefruit! We also enjoyed the special of the day, so much so that we talked about it the rest of the day! My best friend and I double dated here a few weeks ago before we walked to the Museum of Ice Cream. I wasnt sure what the crowd would be like on a Sunday evening so I made a reservation on Opentable. While it was pretty empty when we first got there, the crowd had really picked up by the time we left. We had an early reservation because our museum of ice cream tickets were for 7PM. My boyfriend dropped us off and parked at a garage nearby. Tratto is attached to a hotel and the bathroom for this place is in the lobby of the hotel, not in the restaurant itself. The interior had a cool chic modern vibe, but not super hipster or too modern if that makes sense. It was a neat bar and the menu had so many delicious sounding things that it was very hard to choose! They are known for their homemade pasta so that is what I got. They had the tagliatelle as their featured pasta during that time, and while I had seen many pictures of their buccatini, I was reluctant to order the tagliatelle because I didnt know what to expect. Well you can expect greatness. These wide ribboned noodles came out perfectly and I'm so happy I ordered it. Went well with the red sauce and was the right consistency. My boyfriend and my friends boyfriend both ordered the orchiette. It came out in a baked pan and oh so creamy and was topped with bread crumbs. Nice and filling too! I will say I was bummed out they didnt give bread for free. We had to order a foccacia for the table because my friend hadnt eaten much all day and was starving. The bread was good though. Caesar salad was bitter with a grainy texture. My lemon pasta with chicken cacciatore was inedible. It had an odd smell, the past was over cooked and the chicken had an awful after taste. We've been to Tratto twice recently under different circumstances, and both visits were a hit! Our first visit was a Happy Hour stop at the Bar, after a Curran Theater Matinee! It was just the right thing for a day when we were hungry, but not tooooo hungry. The bartender was friendly and, though busy, he was artful in crafting cocktails and staying in perfect timing with his bar patrons. The Moscow Mule was delicious, and his recommendation for a crisp dry white wine was right on the money! The food came out hot and promptly. We enjoyed the Chicken Thighs. It was the perfect sized, juicy and tender. We also ordered The Beef and Ricotta Meatball Sliders. You can order them by the piece, so we tried just one each, as a sample, to go along with the Chicken Thighs we already ordered. The Sliders have a Cheese mix in them that allows them to stay most, even when cooked all the way through (the only way to eat ground meat). The Warm Olives were a nice finishing touch. So, the next week, we needed a place for dinner before the show and we remembered how much we liked Tratto's Happy Hour. This time we started with Pizza.... The Mushroom and Poached Garlic Pizza came with Fontina, sage, and a drizzle of Truffle oil. SO delicious. We shared a fresh and vibrant Arugula Salad. I love Fennel, and this salad had shaved fennel on it, razor thin. The dressing was light, as we like it, and the Parmesan Shaved on top gave it the most delicate suggestion of saltiness. We kept the pasta choice simple. The Cannelloni is made in a classic style and is easy to share, with enough for the two of us. The Roasted Eggplant filling had a slightly smoky flavor that balanced out the creaminess of the ricotta. That would have made for a great share appetizer, too. The service was friendly and not hovering. We found our waiter easily whenever we needed anything. He helped us settled on a wine that would suit all the dishes equally, and we ordered a bottle. The was a simultaneously electric, and yet intimate, atmosphere to the dining experience here. We ordered the warm olives, wine, spritZ, focaccia, cauliflower, and fungi\truffle pizza- vegan. We were not reappointed, server was educated about menu and vegan options. Only woe while there was the server kept suggesting 'his' vegan options so when we ordered the pizza and clearly said no we don't want tomato sauce and we just want oil he brought us the pie w tomato sauce. The food at Tratto is very okay but it has a nice atmosphere and good pricing. A and I stopped here after seeing a movie at the Westfield and wanting some good, non-Pizza Italian food. I was in workout clothes without makeup so couldn't go anywhere too fancy and Tratto fit the bill. We were able to get sat without any reservation in an intimate table in the corner. On a Sunday night, I would say the restaurant was 75% full. I liked how spacious the restaurant felt with the high ceilings and distance of the tables from each other. The decoration was very fun and casual which I appreciated. We didn't order anything from the bar so I can't comment on their cocktails or wine list so I can't comment on that. However for dinner we ordered -Focaccia Bread ($3) - If you are going to make people pay for bread, it better be good. Luckily, Tratto delivered with a very dense, delicious plate of warm Focaccia. It was served with oil and vinegar (yum!) though not nearly enough for how absorbent the bread was. We were too self-conscious to ask for more but luckily that meant more to eat with dinner. -Chicken Alla Matone ($16) - This was mine and it was good. The chicken was a tad dry but that is always a risk. The Parmesan Polenta it was served with was pretty good and the jam on top of the chicken added some pop. Good portion for the price and not too unhealthy. I just wish it was more memorable. -Butternut Squash Ravioli ($17) - A got this and it was also fine. Good texture and good portion for filled pasta. Nothing to write home about but not bad. Overall, you can't complain much when the bill without tip comes to $20 a person for a sit down Italian meal. The food was adequate, the service was fine and there was nothing to complain about. Was it the best meal I have had? No, but I would definitely come back. Many nights, this is the exact food that I want when I want something that won't kill me health-wise but isn't crazy expensive so I can see us coming here occasionally. read more

My coworkers stayed at The Marker hotel, which is connected to Tratto. After a long day of work, we decided to check out Tratto for early dinner. When we walked in there was no hostess. We only saw the bartender who stared at us and no one else. We then sat on the middle booths. After a few minutes, a waiter approached us and asked if we had a reservation. He said people often reserve the booths and he needed to check the reservations before serving us. Ummm? First of all it is 5:30 pm. Second, there are only 3 tables occupied and lastly, why phrase it like that? A minute later he decided it was cool for us to stay and have "the privilege" to eat there. Based on other reviews it seems that the employees are trained to ask for reservations and turn down people who don't have them. I had a cosmo bc I was in a Carrie Bradshaw mood and Raquel had a Moscow mule. It took over 20 mins for our drink. We saw people come in after us who were served 10 mins before us and that was frustrating. The waitress was nice, but we really did not have great service bc of how long it took to just get our first drinks. We started our meals with a kale Caesar salad for me and a minestrone soup for Raquel. Raquel enjoyed her soup. The kale salad was delicious. The only thing I would have changed would have been to add a bit less lemon to the salad. We shared one if the specials. We had in a house-made pasta with truffle oil and an egg. Tratto caught my eye with their chalk sign advertising bottomless mimosas for $14. That's pretty affordable. Plus, it starts at 10am, which is a whole hour sooner than most places do. Idk, I'm an early bird... So we went for bottomless brunch at 10:15am on a Saturday. No shame. The food was great. I saw someone get the bagel with smoked salmon, and I was tempted because it looked ~amazing~, but I settled on the classic eggs benny. It was great. I liked how the biscuit they used was thinner so it wasn't super bready. The other items I saw at other tables looked amazing as well. I'll have to go back. One surprising thing: they have really great ketchup. I think they make it themselves? It's tangy and a bit coarser than regular Heinz. I guess theirs is extra *extra* fancy. The whole thing was pretty affordable. The service was superb. Our server, Miguel, kept our glasses full for the whole time we were there, and we milked it. Tratto is located next to an unassuming hotel in the Tenderloin on a rather busy street. My boyfriend turned 21 and was craving Italian, so I decided to take him out here for dinner! We were definitely not disappointed. The interior of the restaurant was gorgeous--trendy and modern with a touch of Italy. We actually came the same day as the NBA finals, so there was a watching party there taking up the lounge area, but that didn't deter us from our experience at all. Our waitress was extremely sweet and very polite, constantly checking up on us and giving us helpful recommendations whenever we asked for them. What We Ordered: -"the Tratto": Our waitress recommended "the Tratto" for my boyfriend's first legal drink, and he loved it! According to him (I'm not legal yet sad), it was definitely a spirit forward drink with some smooth, sugary notes. Tratto actually gave him this drink on the house for his 21st, which was very sweet! -Mushroom Pesto Pizza (5/5): This was DELICIOUS. I'm a thin crust gal at heart, so this was right up my alley. This pizza took a relatively simple concept and turned it into a dish that I've been craving ever since I had it. It really nailed the balance between ingredients, and I could not recommend it enough! Our waitress also supplied us with some potent chili oil, which complemented this pizza SO well. -Bucatini (5/5): I've never tried bucatini before, but I really liked this! The noodle was similar to spaghetti, but thicker--I enjoyed the texture which contrasted with the creamy, meaty sauce well. -Tiramisu (5/5): Wonderful! We were scrambling for a quick pre-theater bite and came across Tratto on Geary. The hostess couldn't have been more accommodating; even though it was very busy, she found us a table in the small back room which, as it turns out is quiet and intimate. The main part of the restaurant is energetic and vibrant (e.g. loud), so we were happy to get a quiet table where we could talk. First off, we were impressed with their wine list, which has a favorite of mine, the Cline Mouvedre Rosé. It went very nicely with the Polenta Fries which were amazing! They were hot and crispy on the outside, yet creamy on the inside. They can with a tomato dipping sauce which seemed unnecessary because they were so good on their own. For my entree I had the Tratto burger. Made perfectly to order. It had a slice of crispy Prosciutto di Parma, not too salty (as American-made prosciutto can typically be), with a slather of creamy fontina cheese. It was a skillful combination. The ample helping of piping hot fries that came with it was a hit. As a matter of fact, despite how busy it was, the food came out without delay, and hot! We also shared a plate of Fritto Misto. So fresh and crispy... with enough for two to share. The mix also had some vegetables, and lemon slices included which gave it a nice balance. Ooooops, not enough time for dessert. Gotta go.
