Every time we come to Florence, we have always enjoyed coming to Trattoria Bordino. My husband stopped in to see if they had any soups on the menu, they said they would have either onion soup or Ribolitta that evening. So, we made a reservation for dinner. We were quite shocked to see that they their prices for wine by the bottles jumped from €30 to €45, which we thought was high. They did not offer any house wines. I ordered the Ribolitta which was very good. My husband enjoyed a Filet with green peppercorn sauce. For dessert, he chose the crème caramel. Our disappointment came when they presented us with the bill. Since, the Ribolitta was not on the menu, I guess they thought that is where they could get us, and they did! I have had Ribolitta every day since I have been in Florence and have paid between €9 and €12. Trattoria Bordino decided to charge us €16, which I felt was excessive, and for that they have lost us as a returning customer. read more

Hidden gem away from the main Ponte Ave hip area. We sat inside and it was very warm ( we were sweating while eating) but there were people smoking on the small front patio so we opted for indoor seating. Our waiter came over right away and took our order. We started with the bruschetta plate which had 4 different spreads. There was an olive one, a meat one, a traditional one, and a pickled onion one which we decided was both our favorite. My boyfriend got the Florentine steak (that's what this restaurant is known for) and I got the sea bass which seemed like it was actually trout. My boyfriend said it was the best steak he's ever had and my sea bass was delicious. This place was a lot more traditional and less touristy than most of the places around there. On our way out our waiter offered us an Amaro shot and took one with us. He explained it was the traditional after dinner drink in Italy. If we are ever back in Florence we will be back. read more

We stayed in a place in the piazza that leads to this great restaurant. We walked by at lunch one day and I noticed the size of the steak someone was eating. We went back for lunch the next day on our 20th anniversary. It was so delicious we went back for dinner. It is a cozy place inside and service was spot on. Let me just say that this place tempts me to downgrade every one of my 5-star Yelp reviews I ever have written and let it stand as the lone 5-star review. (Every single one but Trianon - more on that in another review). Was that strong enough a statement? Let me try again: I'm Texan. And Trattoria Bordino has the single best steak I have ever had. Bistecca Fiorentina. It has changed my life and outlook on beef. A little red meat (and by a little, I mean a full pound and more) is good for the soul. This steak is God's gift to mankind. For 30 years, the restaurant has been using a faggio wood-burning oven to cook its steaks over a cast-iron grill with just salt and pepper over dry-aged beef. Upon completion of achieving a rare-plus (somewhere between rare and medium rare) standing, the staff pours olive oil over the perfectly prepared meat, crispy on the fatty and tendon-y edges and soft and tender in the center. I then cut it piece by piece, chunk by chunk, and put it in my mouth. All 1.1 lb. of it. So enjoy it. Cherish it. Delight in it. Indulge! If there is ONE place you visit in Firenze, let it be Trattoria Bordino before the Duomo. Nothing against Duomo - it's great, and I climbed all 400-something steps of it - but like I said, if you only get to visit one place, let it be Trattoria Bordino. Other cities have Duomos. I have been going here since I lived in San Casciano in Val di Pesa (where the wonderful "Ristorante Pizzeria I Falciani" is) in the early 70s. This is one of my favorite places in Firenze. On a quiet street, just a stroll away from the Ponte Vecchio, Hotel Lungaro, and down the street from another iconic restaurant, "Celestino" you will find this tiny place tucked away and off the beaten track. When we started going, like many places there were rarely tourists, and most restaurants in those days were for locals, or Italians from other areas. This of course, created a completely different environment and dining experience. Over the years, I have noticed the food has changed so much, a great sense of loss has occurred, and only by luck will you find the true homestyle dining experience I have been lucky enough to enjoy many times. Bordino's is one of those places that still has the charm of those days. My favorite dish there is, 'Gnocci al Forno'. Service- Kind staff, the food came out promptly (but in a more unique order, we thought, though that could just be the American in us). Food- Filet Steak was the star of the night- juicy, tender, and a fair price! We found that most of our orders were decently priced, and portioned fairly. We also enjoyed the spinach, clams, and steak loin. No major complaints, although the bread and chips (French fries, when we assumed chips alluded to "American" chips) were off putting. The "chips" were on the saltier side, too, and the bread was dry and tough. But as a group, we felt that the pros were enough to outweigh the cons. The dessert was also great! The food here was amazing!! We ordered a fiorentina steak, spaghetti with lobster and tomato, and spaghetti with clams. The price for value was really good (ours were between €10 and €15), and we really enjoyed our meals. Desert was also really great, they had a wonderful selection of freshly made cakes and pies. Ants.....Ants....Ants....on the wall, on the table (yes, flying ants). When we approached the waiter he seemed annoyed and could care less. The food was just okay. We ordered sides of spinach and potatoes to accompany our grilled trout. The sides came out 15 minutes before the fish which we had to ask be cancelled. They had the fish but it was sitting at another table. After preparing and served (which was tasty but cold) the fish with bones. All restaurants should debone the fish prior to serving. Hidden in a side alley away from the hustle and bustle of Florence lives Trattoria Bordino, a restaurant that is without a doubt worth searching for. I was informed about this hidden gem by a college friend who lived in Florence during her high school years. She said if I could only eat at one restaurant during my visit, this was THE place, especially at lunch when there is a bargain special. It seemed like I was destined to dine at Trattoria Bordino after I figured out it was a minute walk from the apartment I was staying in. The inside was quaintly decorated with old exposed brick all over, offering a welcoming rustic vibe. Just as my friend informed me, the lunch special was incredible: only 10 Euro for a florentine steak and salad combo! It was one of the tastiest meals I have EVER had. My parents and I had such a positive experience here for lunch, that we decided to come back a couple days later for dinner. The romantic vibe of the place was kicked up a notch with the sun down and lights low. This time around I ordered the penne pasta with spicy tomato sauce, which was perfectly cooked and had a wonderful kick. Eating in Florence is pricey, and so it was here. But the food and the atmosphere was great. The restaurant seems to be built into the back of a castle/hillside. Lots of "old" decorations hanging everywhere. Small and quaint. The tourists (including us) show up early for dinner (after 7 PM), while the locals start showing up an hour or 2 later. Of particular joy was the truffle pasta and the Steak alla Florentine. For the steak, they let you know the weight before they grill it. You pay by the 100 grams. The steak was grilled on an indoor wood grill. A deliciously thick rib eye steak, grilled European style, meaning very pink in the middle. But nice and crunchy on the outside. The maitre'd slices it up table side. Finished the meal with a rich and creamy tiramisu. read more

After a whirlwind day in Florence, my friend and I ended up near the Ponte Vecchio at dinner time. Not wanting to spend TOO much on dinner, we searched for a location that was somewhat off of the beaten path with good reviews. Trattoria Bordino did not disappoint. First off, note that dinner starts at 7:00, so if you're hungry early like we were that day, grab a bite on the way there. Despite being known for steak, I ordered the spaghetti all'aragosta (lobster and tomato) and my vegetarian friend had the ravioli burro e salvia (butter and sage). We also ordered a side of asparagus to share, as we felt like we'd been missing green things lately. Both pastas were amazing, but I would have liked to see a little more lobster in my dish, or at least larger pieces. Our waiter helped us pick a local wine (Tenute Guicciardini Strozzi Villa Cusona, Vernaccia di San Gimignano), which was perfectly refreshing for how hot it was that day. The restaurant even sold me a second bottle to take home! My friend and I agreed that we wished we had one more day in Florence so that we could try more of Trattoria Bordino's menu - I hope to try the steak someday! read more

So, I'm a graduate student. I can't afford a lot. Dining here, and alone, was a wonderful experience. The food was tasty, the wine was delicious and cheap. I had a prosciutto plate, prosecco, 2 1/4 liters of wine, a salad, and tiramisu for 26 euro. That's a deal if I say so. Everything else on the menu was well priced, I just needed some cured meat and leafy greens! On a different day I may do a arugula salad and ravioli and if would be absolutely the same. We had dinner at bordino based on recommendation of a local guy, and it was an excellent choice. We had steak with mushroom, shrimp risotto and pesto lasagna and they were all excellent. Service was good, welcomed by bubbly white wine, and bread was ok, unsalted Florence style. Food was served on time, and hot, the way we like. We sat inside and enjoyed the decorations on wall. I came upon this place while exploring the city on Nov. 13, 2016. The tourist guides alway say avoid places near the main tourist attractions, and the Ponte Vecchio is a stones throw away. However, this place is on a small side street and is completely hidden from the crowded pedestrian routes just around the corner. I only found it because I approached from the opposite side after finishing a trek around the south bank of the city. I passed by at around 2 PM, hungry after a long walk, and was immediately attracted by the unpretentiousness of the place and the fact that it was packed with Italians, which is always a good sign. I followed several locals inside and, although it was crowded, they were able to squeeze me into a small table near the back of the dining room, which was noisy and dark reminding me of a medieval cellar. The menu was written on one side of a single sheet of regular sized paper. I don't remember the Italian words exactly but there was essentially an Option "A" and an Option "B" each consisting of a first and second course. Within each course four or five items were available. I chose Option B for 9 euros, and selected Pasta Primadora for the first course and a some chicken dish for the second which the waiter explained in broken English but I didn't entirely understand. The pasta, a rigatoni in a tomato based sauce, arrived promptly and boy what a pasta dish this was; I mean, I'm talking the Michelangelo of Pasta here! The preparation was very simple but so wonderfully and perfectly flavored. I took my time and savored every noodle, all the while wondering how I might reproduce this flavor in my own kitchen. My guess is it had something to do with frying the tomatoes in olive oil in just the right way. Next, the mystery chicken dish arrived. The first thing that struck me was how small it was - just a single thin chicken breast wrapped in ham and topped with melted cheese. You might call it an inside out chicken cordon bleu. The flavor was almost beyond description but I'll try. It was soft and creamy with just the right amount of saltiness. I thought about asking the waiter what kind of cheese it was but he looked far too busy. If I had to guess I'd say it was fontina or something similar. In summary, what a pleasant surprise to have come across this place. Yes, I saw the coliseum in Rome this week, the Pantheon, and all the big sights in Florence too; but this little gem will stay in my memory along with them. read more
