But if you want honest food at today's prices, pull up a chair. The lobster roll was a revelation. Not that mayonnaise-based lobster purée somebody scraped out of a tub and smeared onto a bun that had been sitting around since the Carter administration. This was real chunks of lobster, lightly seasoned, piled onto a fresh roll and left alone to taste like lobster. Then came the steamers. Sweet mercy. Those steamers were the best thing I have tasted since 1974, and I'm not entirely sure what happened in 1974, but apparently somebody knew how to steam a clam. The service was excellent--friendly, attentive and without the usual modern-day restaurant ritual of wondering whether your server has forgotten you exist. The décor? Let's just say aging fish camp chic. If you're looking for polished brass and a chandelier imported from France, keep driving. We got 6 oyster which weren't the best but I loved the accoutrements that came with it! We also got a full lobster and lobster bisque. The lobster was freshly cooked and yummy! Pricey but def worth it-- the lobster and crab rolls are absolutely jam packed with meat. Which one is better really just comes down to if you prefer lobster or crab. I think a small is def enough to fill up the average person (the size is misleading). The blueberry lemonade didn't have too much blueberry flavor to it but was still decent. The blueberry pie with blueberry ice cream is an absolute must order, one of the best blueberry pies I've had in my life. It's a very popular place so prob not the best option if you're in a rush. Small roadside spot, but there is a good amount of (outdoor) seating comfortably spaced. They have a bar and a single bathroom as well. We got a Large Hot and a Small (regular sized) Classic (cold). The hot is better than the cold, so I'd opt for that over the cold. The Lobster Bisque comes with the standard oyster crackers, but I was actually enjoying this with the kettle chips that came with the lobster rolls! Creamy with nice chunks of lobsters. Definitely a great non-roll option. The Blueberry Pie with Blueberry Ice Cream is the way to go! We got this after finishing our rolls and bisque. It was freshly baked with a crisp crust and lots of blueberries! It was a little sweet for me, but it is an indulgent dessert! Note: the lemonade and unsweetened ice tea are bottled drinks. Small roadside places are the way to eat in Bar Harbor. The best meal we ate on the island and it's not even close They have plenty of outdoor seating (nothing indoors) and a cute outdoor bar as well. So while walking along the streets and wharf there are a plethora of Lobster roll places. We kinda stumbled on to this one by accident. It was a pleasant accident. We ordered the "traditional roll" which really was not my tradition. Now mind you it was just pure lobster meat on a very, very plain glorified hotdog bun at best. No butter no toast no mayonnaise no nothing sans a very small piece of lettuce. Now the good news there was 1.25 lbs of lobster meat cooked to perfection. My wife and I came here for lunch as the rest of the family went to Acadia to get in some rock climbing (which ended up getting cancelled due to them witnessing another climber fall 20' onto his back before they even got started). Our meal at Travelin' Lobster was excellent. There was a line, so others must like the place. We got to the front quickly, and ordered. They also have an outdoor patio bar for alcohol. We grabbed a table in the shade and waited for our food to come to us. We went with a lobster bisque, clam chowder, lobster salad, and a Captain's Vacation, which was Captain Morgan, Sprite, and pineapple juice. Everything was delicious. The lobster salad was 3oz of meat and choice to have it plain or with butter/mayo. I chose plain, and the salad was a bowl of garden salad. They even threw in some blueberries as this is Maine. The soups were hearty and full of flavor. They have two port-o-potties and also a small shack for selling t-shirts and hats. Was about $70 including tax for the two of us. If you're in Bar Harbor, the Travelin Lobster is the lobster stand you need. We visited this great place on our first night, we had lobster rolls and clam chowder that was exceptional, with generous portions and priced fairly. The employees were fun and they made the experience nicer. The next day it was time for lunch and my husband said lets go back to the Traveling Lobster, I said (and later regretted) no let's try somewhere else. We tried a place with a catchy lobster name and the teenage boy, behind the counter of the takeout as he handed us our change said, you're leaving me a tip - right? In unison we both said no. I added we don't tip workers at McDonalds, we're not tipping you and even if we did, we wouldn't tip you because of your demand, he walked away nonplussed, to add insult to injury the food was mediocre for the price. Later that afternoon we tried another lobster stand, and it was worse; the food was terrible for the price, we ordered a side of lobster mac and cheese and there was not a shred of lobster in it, we ended up taking it back and getting our money. Starving, we went back to the Traveling Lobster and had another great meal, listened to trivia and left satisfied. What we learned is if a stand isn't busy or has few cars, don't bother, there's a reason. By all means go the Travelin Lobster, the parking lot is busy, the line moves fast and the food comes out fast and excellent, the employees don't attempt to shame you into tipping them and when you order lobster mac and cheese, you get plenty of lobster. The service felt rude from the moment we ordered, and instead of feeling welcomed, we were made to feel as though we were inconveniencing the staff by being there. What was especially frustrating was that no one told us they were about to close the dining area. While we were still eating, staff began putting everything away around us--including the salt and pepper shakers and napkins--which made us feel rushed and unwelcome. If the intention was to close before we could comfortably finish our meal, they should have simply let us know that orders were takeout only. That would have been much more considerate than allowing us to dine in while closing the restaurant around us. For the price we paid for two lobster dinners, we expected not only good food but also a pleasant dining experience.
