This place is a westside gem, i have been going here since it originally opened years ago. Let me start with the layout, it may look like a sports place but its only for guys who want great mexican and be able to watch the game. The staff is friendly, the chips and salsa that come next are homemade, fresh, and mighty tasty! Drinks are reasonably priced for those that want a nice complimentary shot or glass of something from the wide selection bar. The food is awesome, I've yet to go to a big franchise chain mex restaurant and them be better than Tres Potrillos. Prices are about the same give or take a dollar or so, of any chain mex restaurant. My wife and I were visiting my son who recently moved to Galloway. Tres Potrillos was recommended to him as a good place that had great Mexican food and above average margaritas. We read through the ratings on Yelp and saw that what he had heard seemed to be true so off we went to Tres Potrillos for dinner and drinks. The good: nice atmosphere with plenty of seating indoor as well as an option to dine outside. Outside seating wasn't anything special but it was a nice evening so eating outside worked out fine. The menu selections offered typical Mexican cuisine as well as some unique options such as a stuffed pineapple. It was nice to see some variation in the menu. Now for the average: As for the food, it didn't live up to the hype, it wasn't bad by any means but it also wasn't anything to brag about. It was average Mexican food. I have to admit, while I know cinnamon is used in many Mexican dishes, I don't recall ever having it in my food. I had an enchiladas dish and the cinnamon was fairly pronounced in the enchilada sauce. Not bad but again, nothing great, not sure I'm a fan of it being my dinner. One thing that did bother me a bit however was that my enchilada dish was topped as described in the menu with lettuce, Pico di Gallo, and sour cream. My son's burrito dish included a "house salad". When my son asked about his salad that didn't show, our server didn't know if the dish came with a salad or not and really didn't seem motivated to find out. Not a good sign. As it turns out, the same topping I got on my enchiladas (lettuce, Pico di Gallo and sour cream) was what came on his burrito and THAT was the house salad. Aaaaaa, OK? Why were the items listed separately on my item but labeled as a house salad on another? It was funny because before we left, we did in fact hear another table ask the same question of their server. Another thing that was just average was the pitcher of margarita. Someone in a review stated that this place doesn't skimp on the alcohol like other places and that they truly do add a healthy amount of alcohol to the pitcher. Let's go with a big NO here. This place serves the same old washed down margarita as all the other places and gains no extra points in the margarita department. Our pitcher was literally HALF ice cubes so we really only got a half pitcher but paid a full pitcher price. We poured two drinks and the ice cubes were already poking up out of the rest of the remaining margarita in the pitcher. Again, the margaritas were not terrible but they don't do anything above or beyond any other place. I suspect that if you ordered a "premium" margarita it may contain more alcohol but then again, the same is true with any other Mexican place. Finally, the only other so-so item that I noted were the actual tables used for outside dining. For the most part a table is just a table but the ones used outside were an open mesh/screen type that you might find on a friend's patio. The problem with them is that they are hard to wipe and/or clean. Our table had small amounts of food stuck in some of the nooks and crannies and it was sticky in spots from not being cleaned properly. Another bad side to using this sort of table is that if you scoop up some salsa with a chip and it drips off or some foods slips off your fork, drumroll please...yes, of course, it falls right through the mesh table and onto your lap. Heaven forbid if a table gets bumped and your drink or maybe an after dinner coffee gets spilled. The next time we're in town and want Mexican, we'll explore other options. read more

I really wanted to like this place- I love Mexican food and it's pretty much within walking distance of my parent's new house. After 2 visits a week apart, I decided this review needed to be written. Here's a summary of our visits and why I'm giving them a one star (which is generous, after my experiences): Visit #1- Our first visit took place on a Saturday around dinner time. My mom, dad, fiancé and I decided to go check this place out since we drive by it just about every day. From the beginning, it seemed as if our server was very flustered but the place was busy so we didn't think much of it. We felt rushed through each part of the ordering process and almost as if he just wasn't paying attention. Drinks (just water for this visit) and appetizers came out and were pretty good. When entrees were brought, my moms side of black beans were missing but he went and brought them out pretty quickly. All the while, my dad hadn't received his entree. After seeing our server walk by a few times we stopped him and mentioned that we were missing an entree. He went to check and said that it was never rang in. He offered some guac or queso to make up for the missing entree- but we already had both of those items at our table. My dads food was brought out by a different server who just kinda dropped it onto the table and left. Nobody seemed truly sorry for his missing food (we were almost finished by the time his food arrived) and no compensation was offered on our bills. Overall- guac and queso were good but the tacos were just average. Service level was poor. Visit #2- To be fair, it was Cinco de Mayo, however, we purposely went between lunch and dinner to avoid crowds. My mom, 2 girl friends and I arrived around 2:15pm seeking a light lunch and a margarita. We immediately notice that it looks rather slow for it being Cinco de Mayo but figured that would work to our advantage. WRONG. We asked to be seated on the patio, where there were already 2 other parties seated. After a few minutes, our server arrives- the same guy from last weekend! I was hoping that last weekend he was just having an off day. WRONG again. He brings us a menu that is 1/4 of the regular menu and I asked if we could see a full menu. He went to get the menu but never came back with it. He came back to take our drink orders and i asked for a menu again. While he was gone, a same size party arrives and is seated near us. Within 5 minutes they have full menus, water, chips and margaritas. We were still waiting on water and chips (I had given up on the full menu and pulled up their menu online at this point). 25 minutes have gone by and we have still had nothing brought to our table. I went inside and asked for a manager. I explained what was going on and she said that she would now be our server. She brought us chips and waters pretty quickly and I was hopeful that the visit was about to turn around. Nope. After that, we didn't see much of her. Our original server came to take our food orders and one of my friends asked about the specials she had seen on the way in- he said he didn't know about them but they had them. Ok....She went to check the board and said she wanted the special, to which he replied that they didn't have that special today. We ordered a few dips and 2 plates of nachos- one with no sour cream due to a lactose intolerance. The margaritas finally arrive- with no glasses for the friend who ordered a pitcher. After asking for one twice, she gave up and just started drinking From the pitcher. Finally the server brings the original waters we ordered 40+ minutes ago and a cup. The food comes out and one plate of nachos has sour cream so it was sent back. It came back out with traces of sour cream still visible so we know they just scraped it off and brought the same plate. My friend decided that food was a lost cause at this point and to stick with just margaritas. She called the "manager" over and explained what happened and that she didn't want them now. The "manager" rolled her eyes, grabbed them and slammed them down into a bin on the way back inside. Way to show your professionalism. It's at this point we realize she's not a manager and just another server they pawned us off into. For the rest of our visit, everyone avoided our table like the plague. We finished our drinks (the margaritas were actually really good- but not worth the frustration of this place) and were happy to be finished with this experience, vowing to never return. If you've made it this far: stick to El Vaquero if you're looking for good Mexican cuisine, drinks and great service. I've been to 4 of them so far and have never experienced anything like this. read more

This has always been our go to spot for Mexican. I've been visiting here for the past 10 plus years and over the past couple, the food quality and service has gone down hill. The food sometimes comes out semi-warm, just slopped together in a hurry, and without taste. I know they recently changed their menu and some of the new dishes are great, but it doesn't change my opinion. The main bartender tends to rush you through your drinks and rarely offers you another, although the patrons who "frequent" seem to get the attention from her. We will still visit as there are some great waitresses (Lola, Eva) who take great care of their tables, however, if we have a better option for the night, we will take it. read more

BUT, out of sight, out of mind. We waited almost 40 minutes to order and our queso was even coming out cold. We tried to order after 30 minutes and were told that we could order when they decided they we're ready. Food came out cold and most of us didn't even eat it. My dad had heard great things about this place so our family went to try it out and only one of our four dishes was liked. The staff are friendly and it's a decent looking restaurant but the food did not impress me. The food was not terrible but not worth eating again. If the food wasn't as good as it was, it would be a one star. The place is clean, and spacious. The patio is great. The service is retarded. They have the most servers I've ever seen in a restaurant, and good luck getting anyone to do drink refills (booze too, not talking about all you can drink pop). Back to the food, it isn't what you're expecting but it is good. For example my gf got a chicken quesadilla. What we got was a chicken fajita. I asked the server if she was sure this is what we ordered because it looked an awful lot like a fajita. She said it was and I asked why there was no cheese, since thats what a quesadilla is about. The menu changed, but the prices went up & the quality went way down. We used to come in here a couple of times a month, but after yesterday I don't think we'll be returning anytime soon. It wasn't very busy for a Friday early evening, and we got seated right away, on the patio like we requested. The server was friendly enough. The problem actually started with the new menu. They revamped the menu, added a lot of new items, which is nice- even if most are just variations on a theme. The biggest issue we had though is that the prices are pretty much were they were before the re-vamp, and they cut way back on the "extras". For example, dishes that used to come with a side of refried beans and rice now cost the same, but don't come with either. And my wife's favorite dish no longer comes with the tomatoes lettuce and sour cream that make sense to have on a build it yourself fajita-style dish. No, just the wraps and some poorly cooked chicken. If you want those "extras" it costs $1.50. Seriously, a $1.50 for what turned out to be a tiny tiny spoonful of diced tomato, a small spoonful of sour cream and a small handful of lettuce. It was enough material for one, maybe two fajitas. That's it! Then, as she was cutting up her chicken (because it's supposed to go into a wrap, but they give you the whole overly flattened chicken breast whole) she finds this mysterious pile of black nastiness under the chicken. We asked the server to take it to a manager or someone to determine what the mystery specimen was. The best excuse we got was "It's probably melted cheese". It was black and slimy. I don't think it was cheese, even so- scrape that nasty stuff OFF of the chicken before you serve it. It's just plain gross! If you're wondering how my food was- well I got one of the new burritos. The Tinga Chicken. Now, everything I've ever seen before served "Tinga" is spicy. This was some of the most bland shredded chicken I've ever had. Very unimpressed, no real flavor at all in the dish. I would say that I liked how the three sauces on the plate poured over the burritos were done to look like the Mexican flag. I'd like to say it, but with the giant pile of lettuce on top (which I really didn't want, but they always put there even if you tell them to hold the lettuce) you couldn't actually see the sauce flag. So after a very disappointing let down of a meal we waited for our check. For OVER 15 minutes! The server never came back. She had checked on us once, when we showed her the chicken sludge. But after that she didn't come anywhere near us. I had to go back inside, to the host's desk and have them page her! So I could pay for the lousy food they gave us. Yeah. After that kind of treatment, and horrible food I don't think we'll be back. A real shame, it used to be my wife's favorite Mexican place. Now we'll be looking for another. Oh, and for the love of Pete, don't bother ordering ANY of their deserts- they'd be halfway acceptable if they didn't cover EVERYTHING with a huge gob of whipped cream, chocolate sauce and sprinkles. We love Tres Potrillos! Great food, friendly staff. They recently updated their menu and introduced a lot of fresh spins on classic entrees and appetizers. The margaritas are great! If you like Patron, you have to try the Patron margarita. It's a little pricey at $12 each (jumbo size - I'd guess 16 or 20 oz?) but they are delicious! I'm looking forward to sipping on those in their beautiful patio area this summer! read more

Where do I begin? To follow Google maps will take you to the correct intersection but have you turn the wrong way. When we got in the door we were greeted by one of the servers very nicely, who also ended up being our waitress. As I said, she was nice but very quiet. We got the salsa and chips and the salsa was pretty good. I don't believe homemade but still not bad. For an appetizer we order queso and chorizo. It was so greasy it was basically inedible. On to the main coarses, I ordered a steak burrito and my wife got a steak and chorizo burrito. My dish was mainly filled with beans, the steak was flavorless and the rice was extremely dry. My wife's had the same problem as the cheese dip with it being too greasy. I'm a large man that loves his greasy foods but even that was too much. I only give this place 2 stars because the decor was very nice and the people working that we talked with were nice. I will not return and advise others to not go either. We tried this place because it is close to Cinco De Mayo, as well as close to home. We were greeted right away and seated promptly and the waitress came to our table quickly and asked what we wanted to drink. Things went downhill after that. I ordered a strawberry margarita on the rocks with salt on the rim, and my husband got a frozen raspberry margarita. When they arrived, mine was frozen with no salt. I didn't complain and just drank it. Then we had to ask for chips and salsa, which is something we have never had to do before at a Mexican restaurant. The food was average, at best, and the waitress pretty much disappeared. We waited forever to get our check. We will not be going back to this place. read more

if I could give a minus 10 I would. our past experiences at Trea Portillo has always been good food and service. yesterday I ordered the seafood enchiladas and it was probably the worst meal I have ever eaten. my entire three enchiladas was supposed to be jumbo shrimp and scallops with spinach. My enchiladas had diced shrimp and scallops and if I put all of the seafood together I would not have had three tablespoons. They were mostly filled with spinach and very little seafood. What sets this place apart from some other Mexican places is it's fab patio! It's huge, perfect place to spend happy hour with a couple Margaritas ;). Their salsa appears to be freshly made, w/chunks on onion and cilantro. I normally order the Baja Mex salad, its a large romaine chopped salad w/ marinated slices of chicken. It also has beans, corn, tomatos and cheese on it. I get it with a side of sour cream to be dipped versus a regular dressing. Its as good of a salad that I have had at any mexican joint. read more

Decided to pay this place a visit after a coworker of mine spoke so highly of them and could have not been anymore disappointed. My sprite was flat so I ordered a water instead which of course was good ol' tap, salsa was decent but no predominate flavor notes or spices. I feel like it was just one of those microwave ones you buy in bulk at Costco or GFS. I've been here before and it was better, but this was not good.
