I've heard lots of great things about Troop so I was excited when we had a staff dinner here. For an appetizer I ordered the Yucca fries--the fries were a bit dry but they tasted better with the aoli sauce! For the main entree, I ordered the braised lamb. It was good but it wasn't amazing. I'm bummed because this place is so cool--lots of artwork on the walls, cute sitting areas where you can take lots of pictures, and the overall ambience is very hip. This was our first time here and I am BLOWN AWAY. First of all the service was amazing. Mason went above and beyond to make sure that I enjoyed my meal AND that I knew exactly how much alcohol was in my cocktail so I could enjoy them responsibly. I had originally ordered the beef option on the menu, but then Mason pointed out (without my even having to ask!) that the dish was on the spicy side. I don't love spice, so I ordered the Pork Tenderloin instead and I cannot remember the last time I enjoyed a meal this much. After the first bite my mouth literally watered when I was cutting a piece for a second bite. So based on the wing challenge last year and a picture a friend sent me yesterday, my sister and I went for wings testy. She is very hard to please but loved them. I,on the other hand, was unimpressed. I like crispy and the seemed as if they had been previously cooked and then steamed to be warmed up. It made me miss my dear daddy, who warmed food in this same manner, pre-microwave days. The service was good and the music made me feel as if I was home. Had I been with a wild bunch, I'd have been dancing in the aisles. I love this place and its' ambiance and will always return. It's a fun, dive-like atmosphere, young crowd, loud music, big screens, etc. A generally irreverent vibe. Our waiter was a gem,; low-key and very sincere, offered detailed and helpful description of dishes and beverages--he was excellent and treated us well, brought tastes of beers we'd inquired about without us even asking. The appetizers were great, and we thought nothing of following them up with entrees; that's when things went south. The fish sandwich was boring and overburdened with a giant roll and slathered with an incomprehensible vegetable slush--but worse was the enormous helping of cold, soggy/leathery fries with no discernible seasoning; if they'd been good, 1/4 the amount served would have been plenty. Noodle entrees were lackluster. One of us said the banh mi sandwich was delicious. Our number of Providence days is limited now as we prepare for our big life move. But here we are true to our nature checking out new restaurants until the very last day! We had a great time with friends and coworkers here at Troop PVD. Heard from various people that this was the place to check out. They have a lot of 90s type music here and hippish decorations - a perfect place for the casual gathering of friends! We came for dinner and drinks with a bunch of foodies and we ended up ordering so much from the menu we told the waitress which of the dishes we weren't going to order... This evening we had "The Roots", winter radishes, lamb meatballs, street noodles, hanger steak, squid, peas and carrots, jerk chicken, duck and waffles (special). We also had ginger creme brulee, salted caramel cookie and ice cream sandwich from Tricycle ice cream. And the stand outs for the night... the squid was awesome and deserves to be in a category of its own. The jerk chicken was also nicely done and the duck and waffles was not only delicious but something unique to this restaurant. Everything else was good but those were the stars for the night! All in all a fun place to bring friends for a different scene. "Trendy and unique" is what some of the other yelpers here describe it as and I would tend to agree! Prompt and consistent service throughout the evening, and it was great to see the staff working as a team. Older hip hop music was kind of loud when we were there, fun but don't go here for a quiet conversation. Food was good but not particularly nuanced. We had the mahi mahi special and their smoked ribs. The ribs were almost candied with not a lot of smoke or spice flavoring. Now let me begin by saying the food is as good as it gets, the atmosphere is excellent, and I got excited to stop in here after my first visit during their soft opening, but this last time I visited service has left me irritated. The staff is friendly, don't get me wrong, but being in the industry myself I had a hard time with the lack of attentiveness. Our visit started with standard at best service, and it just declined throughout our stay. It felt like the bartenders all had their friends sitting at the bar and were too busy socializing. Our dinner arrived and I needed a beer. They walked away and it was several minutes at trying to make eye contact with one of the 3 bartenders standing at the opposite end of the bar chatting away. One happened to walk by and made eye contact but kept walking. I felt it was awkward that I actually had to say "Excuse me..." as it wasn't that busy, there were several empty bar stools. Finally I got to order my next beer and it was a canned option, and for the second time no one asked if I wanted a glass for it. They just popped the can open and walked away. I had to wait several minutes again to ask another bartender for a glass. I just don't know what their model of service is here. I want to like the place, I love Revival, the Laughing Gorilla guys literally SLAY the cuisine game, but I left irritated instead of feeling like I had a great time. read more

I was dining at Troop on a Friday with two friends for brunch. We all agreed that the food was really good but the music was so loud that we had to yell over the music for the entire time that we were there. I ordered poached eggs over sweet potato hash, but my eggs were very hard cooked. We waited a long time for our food but that wasn't the server's fault. She was very helpful and was friendly and professional. I'm so sorry that I can't recommend Troop to anyone. I was looking forward to bringing other people there. read more

We hosted a year-end company party at Troop. Andrea did a great job helping us plan the menu and pick the format for the event. The food was wonderful. Super tasty and very fresh. Our crew loved it all. The bar was rockin'. Cocktails...delicious. Great beer selection. The owner went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed including an emergency run to pick up a specific beer that was requested by a VIP. The event was more than adequately staffed. Don't turn away from this awesome place!! At first appearance it looks like an old mill but drive in to parking lot and experience the cool vibe of outdoor cornhole, connect 4 and outdoor seating. The interior decorating is awesome with vintage boom boxes, sneakers hanging from wires to cool art on the walls. Drinks were amazing! I had trouble deciding whether Troop was a four-star place or a five-star place. Ultimately, I decided to deduct a star because my drink -- which I was excited about because it was made with Tang -- just tasted like Tang, and the service was spotty, with food taking longer than it should have to come out, one dish that never arrived and no explanations offered by the waitstaff. Five stars is reserved for perfection. That said, I'd go back tonight. Troop has shot up to near the top of my Providence restaurant list and is probably my new go-to Rhode Island restaurant recommendation. The small plates were creative and uniformly great -- the grilled Thai flank-steak lettuce wraps were a highlight -- and the atmosphere made me feel good about how cool Providence is, with graffiti-covered walls, vintage rap and a disco ball sending lights flying across our table. The bar seats are made of skateboards. I've never seen a more fashionable front-of-house staff -- does somebody buy those clothes for them? It seems impossible that they'd all be so on point. I walked the not-insubstantial length of the restaurant in search of a bathroom that was right behind me the whole time, and each patron I passed looked hipper than the last. As satisfied as we were by the small plates, skipping dessert seemed like a mistake. I'm rarely excited by crème brûlée anymore, but my wife often orders it and Troop's version, with chunks of stewed strawberries, made me rethink my position. The (I think) house-made cookie was excellent, too, though I'll forgo the accompanying vanilla ice cream next time. It wasn't that good. See, four stars, not five. One reason I'll be recommending Troop is the location: off the beaten path at the Plant in Olneyville, a converted mill that's now an artsy mixed-use space. After dinner we wandered over to Riffraff, a well-curated bookstore and bar with live performances open until midnight. It was the perfect end to a very satisfying evening. read more

Husband and I came here because of the good reviews and the fact that it's a black owned business. The decor we loved, the graffiti, the spray painted artists it was all so aesthetically pleasing. The male host was lovely and very nice, we had a reservation and was seated quickly. Our waitress on the other hand came over rude and acted very short with us. We understand some people have bad days so we didn't take it to heart and ordered the hangover burger and the corned beef hash. We waited a good 40 minutes for our food and in that time the waitress avoided our table and didn't come over once to refill coffee or water or update us on our order but helped the tables surrounding us. Food finally arrived and the corned beef hash was a burnt patty with egg on top and a mustard seed salad with arugula and cheese and the burger came with a sunnyside egg and 3 thick strips of bacon along with a bunch of fries. Unfortunately the fries were dried out and the burger wasn't seasoned well and just tasted bland. Meat and egg in a messy mushy English muffin. We had to ask the host to flag down our waitress for the check because after dropping off our food she didn't come back and ignored my husband waving her down. Troop provides a much needed 90s/hip hop styled place to eat, drink and hang out. The food is awesome - you may have tried it at Laughing Gorilla catered events or the pop-up they did at Kitchen and it's just as good as it's ever been. Small menu but varied options, with vegetarian/vegan friendly choices. (But, get the hanger steak if you're a meat eater). My only complaint is that I've only seen their tacos available at lunch -- please dinner tacos? One night a week? Sean Larkin is involved with the place (co-owner, investor? I'm really not sure) so there's a bunch of Revival beer on tap, but they also have some other awesome craft, and Budweiser for your friend with no taste buds. Full bar too, with a cool looking cocktail list, but I haven't tried anything. As you can imagine, the music and ambiance are great. Be warned, it's loud, but not so loud you can't have a conversation. They have a very long bar, and also a ton of tables for large and small groups. read more

Troop PVD is a new spot just on the Onleyville line that is the place to be. The set up for the place is fresh and new offering a very cool urban vibe. Also, they have their own parking lot which makes things so much easier. They have giant spray painted murals of hip hop idols on the walls and even toy BB Guns to show you they do not mess around. There really is so much to look at when you first arrive. The music is a great mix of old and new R&B and hip hop hits. The seating arrangement is great for big or small groups so you don't have to worry about that. The bar seating is really cool because the bar stools have skateboard decks as the back rest which is awesome. Also they only have one TV at the bar so it isn't really a place to go and watch a game. The drink menu isn't extensive, but they do have a solid selection of beer and a few cocktails made special by Troop. If you like Revival beer then you will love this place because they must've had about four or five Revival beers on Tap. However the drink you have to try is the Drunkachino, I may have the name wrong, but it's something along those lines. It is delicious and it will only leave you wanting more and more. It basically tastes like an iced coffee drink with alcohol. You have to try it. Now on to the food, which was delicious. We started of with the Yucca fries with an aioli dipping sauce and they were amazing. Then we had the Bacon-Butternut Squash grilled cheese and the Banh Mi sandwich. Both of them were delicious and mouthwatering. I highly recommend both options. I will definitely be coming back to Troop! read more

So this is on the west side and oozes artistic and creative vibe. The location has a parking lot for those who don't live locally. The decor is street art meets food and music. The bar lines almost the entire length of the building and booths are quaint. I don't need to tell you anything else about the decor, everyone's photos will say it all. BUT I have to tell you how GREAT our server/bartender Jake was! A glass of Cava, the roots and short ribs later. The best meal I've had in a long time. When the bill came and I saw it was only $35!!! A very interesting experience. If you like hip-hop music, then this is the place to be, as they blast mainstream tracks through bass-heavy speakers. As for the food, they come in fairly generous portions. Out of all the items I tasted, however, I found the street noodles with pork belly to be my favorite. It's an interesting twist on a Vietnamese dish called bún. The burger came in second place because the patty was juicy; the buns were made perfectly; and the garnishes complemented the overall umami flavor profile. I wished the bread they used for the po'boy and the banh mi were softer because it was way too crunchy/hard. Fries were seasoned well. Service was friendly and attentive. Troop could easily be my new favorite spot in Providence and all I did was drink! Popped in on a whim with a friend during their soft opening; the place was bumpin' at 9 p.m. on a Friday night and even though it was a bit chaotic in terms of seating (because there wasn't any) we were able to snag a small table in front of the 10 mile long bar. Our server was super sweet, friendly and attentive, even with the amount of people in there. Since it took about 20 minutes to get our first drink, he hooked us up which is always appreciated, not necessary, but I won't turn down a drink on the house. Great beer selection on tap and I may have just found my new favorite dry cider, also on draft. Took a peek at the menu, definitely some eats on there that I want to try, like now.
