We went to CHKD3 in the mall and ordered on Friday afternoon. Their bo dam sau rieng (avocado and durian) was the only dessert that was decent, but a little sweeter than I would like so I added a lot of ice. The che chuoi (banana coconut dessert) was made with unripe bananas and too sweet. The banh tam was hard and stale. It smells like it was refrigerated the day before and taken out to sale. It has been quite a few years since I've come to Story Road. On our 2nd stop for the day, I came here to order the mochi with mung bean filling (they no longer sell taro filling) and a black milk tea with boba for my daughter. Over the years, Grand Century Mall's roster of eateries as seen its fair share of turnover. Even before the pandemic, it seemed like eateries would come and go somewhat regularly. Still, it was both surprising and disheartening to see several dark vacancies in the food court. The places here may not rank among the best around, but I'd always been curious about a few of them. In particular, I'd always wanted to try Hien Khanh Dakao, so I was stoked to see that they're still here after all this time! Unlike the majority of the eateries in the food court, Hien Khanh Dakao specializes on the sweet rather than the savory. In lieu of offerings like bowls of pho, spring rolls, and rice plates, the menu here features boba drinks, milkshakes, fruity sodas, yogurt blended drinks, coffee, and juices, along with over a dozen cold Vietnamese desserts. What's more, the milkshakes and juices come in a wide variety of flavors, including a bunch that are far more unique than your basic strawberry and vanilla, such as soursop, durian, iced tamarind, and salted kumquat. Now, unfortunately, despite how interesting just about all of the Vietnamese desserts sounded, I have to admit that I've only managed to try the drinks here (always end up feeling too full after eating at the other stands). The two times I've been, I ended up getting their STRAWBERRY BANANA MILKSHAKE ($8, large) and a MANGO MILKSHAKE ($8, large). Even though they're called "milkshakes", the consistency more closely resembles a smoothie - instead of thick and creamy, both were more moderately thick and icy. That being said, both tasted pretty good. The mango one had a nice hit of mango flavor to it while the strawberry banana was great even though I couldn't taste much of the banana. What's more, neither were overly sweet and they both hit the spot considering how hot it was outside. Considering how pretty much every photo and review on here mentions their desserts in some form or fashion, it's pretty obvious that I've yet to try the best things that Hien Khanh Dakao has to offer. From the looks of the photos, I almost feel compelled to come back for their Suong Sa Hat Luu, Thai's Dessert, and their 3 Color Dessert. Of course, that's to say nothing of their 3 Color Zongzi (3 color glutinous rice with pork belly and egg wrapped in lotus leaf) that looks amazing and the fact that the yogurt blended drinks look far better than the milkshakes. I would give this establishment a ZERO rating if that option is available! We came in this morning around 10:15am. The server said the price is $5 per cup of pudding. We waited for 20 minutes for the food to be ready. When we completed the order, the waiter said the price is now $6 per cup of pudding! The good: I've been here many times since they first opened years ago. Recently, I took my 102-year old grandma here and we got the halo jello che, che ba mau (3 color che), and suong sa hat luu che. They were all very tasty and large. You could share one che with 2 people. Each che was around $7-8. They also sell smoothies and milk teas. I like the freshly grated ice that goes atop the che. My family also likes to get the green pandan chewy balls (with coconut inside) that they sell. The halo jello che was refreshing with coconut juice and had cute pink heart-shaped jellies inside. I liked the fresh pieces of coconut meat in that dessert. The bad: I think the halo jello was supposed to have mango pieces but I don't recall seeing that in my drink. The interesting: There is seating right in front that are swivel chairs. It has a fun retro mall-cafeteria feel. Dakao is a city south of Saigon. I thought the prices were a bit steep, averaging about $4-5+ for a ca phe sua da (Vietnamese coffee) and che ba mau (3 color dessert), but that's probably because I have a cheaper standard of comparison. I didn't drink the Vietnamese coffee, but my brother and friend said it was super authentic and super strong. They were able to power through the rest of the day and the night because of it. We were visiting Grand Century Shopping Mall with family and came here to get something to drink because my daughter was thirsty. I ordered a Strawberry Bubble Drink for my daughter and a Taro Bubble Drink for myself, both with white boba pearls in them. My daughter's drink tasted like strawberry with a strong taste of tea, and mine had a creamy taro flavor to mine. There should be more Vietnamese dessert stores in Vietnam Town. I personally think the area is lacking in the dessert department, specifically the che ba mau or variations of it. After lunch our sweet tooth told us our sugar levels were too low so we headed on over to the food court in the mall. We chose this place because the che was not pre packaged but presented cafeteria style and it was in walking distance. We ended up ordering the che ba mau or three colored dessert including jellies, beans, coconut milk, and ice. You can mix and match with other jelly and bean options creating your own dessert. Sweet tooth satisfied. We also got the avocado smoothie with boba which wasn't as creamy as we liked. Both desserts were overly sweet to the point where I couldn't taste any coconut flavor which is the base of most of the che desserts. It was hard to fully indulge and finish the desserts due to the heavy amount of sugar. The service was also mediocre. When I ordered, I was standing there and the worker wasn't even attentive or responsive. He kept listening to music and doing his own thing without paying attention to customers. #6 Durian here is just fantastic. Durian is an acquired taste so this may not be for everyone! The staff who works here are always so nice. They also give good recommendations. The last I was here, I ended up buying a sea-salt tamarind. It was just delicious. 4 stars for the house made mochi balls, never seen anything like them and they seemed to be a house favorite. The sweet and sticky green Mochi balls look like a bright green tomatillo in shape and color. There are three flavors fillings to choose from: freshly shredded coconut, taro, or mung bean paste. These are SO good. 5/$4.25 was a great deal and coconut was there most popular seller. Many people were consuming these in the Grand Century Mall Food Court. This dessert place is located inside Grand Century Mall. Caution: if you have never been to this food strip mall before, I warn you with some of these highlight. 1. This mall is not like any regular malls. My eyes were set on durian jelly as they advertised it on their billboards. So, I ordered it right away. My line was quick, given it was a Sunday evening during Spring time. Inside my durian jelly was ice, lots of them, then there's red jellies placed at the bottom of the cup (the type you can get it at asian grocery store), then you'll find green jellies (don't know the vietnamese name, but they're chewy, and somewhat tasteless - I could taste they put some pandan flavor on it, but not too overpowered. Then you'll find white shredded jellies, which I assume they were made of white gelatin, again they're tasteless, just chewy, and they put lots of them. On top of that you will find some real durian fruit, not that many though, approximately only 2 tablespoon of it, which I think it was quite plentiful for $6.50 price tag. Then it's covered by more shaved ice, and some condensed milk. It was a good desert. I annihilated it in 5 minutes. Will I come back? Yes. Coming from the 626 in Los Angeles, I've had my fair share of Vietnamese desserts and this place is right on par! I got the Che 3 Mau, and it had the perfect ratio of toppings, ice, and coconut milk. The coconut milk was very creamy and rick and was perfect when the ice melted. It's cash only and it's a minimum of $5/drink depending on the toppings you get.
