    grass jelly with seed
    Diann N.

We went to CHKD3 in the mall and ordered on Friday afternoon. Their bo dam sau rieng (avocado and durian) was the only dessert that was decent, but a little sweeter than I would like so I added a lot of ice. The che chuoi (banana coconut dessert) was made with unripe bananas and too sweet. The banh tam was hard and stale. It smells like it was refrigerated the day before and taken out to sale. Even after heating it up in the microwave, it was not edible. The grass jelly with seed looks like it came from the can. I am totally disappointed and would not return.

Black milk tea with boba & mochi with mung bean filling
    Sandy Q.

It has been quite a few years since I've come to Story Road. On our 2nd stop for the day, I came here to order the mochi with mung bean filling (they no longer sell taro filling) and a black milk tea with boba for my daughter. Since our 3rd stop didn't open until 30 min later, we decided to sit at the food court to try out the mochi and boba. On my first bite of the mochi, I was quite disappointed, the exterior was hard, while the filling was super dry. It was the same taste for the rest of the mochi. As for the boba, the tea flavor was good but the boba was too chewy and it lacked sweetness.

Wherever I go to Vietnam town, I always stop by HKDK as my favorite spot for Vietnamese desserts and drinks. Services are very nice and helpful and just recently they have green pandan waffles freshly cooked too

Strawberry Banana Milkshake (minus a few sips...)

Over the years, Grand Century Mall's roster of eateries as seen its fair share of turnover. Even before the pandemic, it seemed like eateries would come and go somewhat regularly. Still, it was both surprising and disheartening to see several dark vacancies in the food court. The places here may not rank among the best around, but I'd always been curious about a few of them. In particular, I'd always wanted to try Hien Khanh Dakao, so I was stoked to see that they're still here after all this time! Unlike the majority of the eateries in the food court, Hien Khanh Dakao specializes on the sweet rather than the savory. In lieu of offerings like bowls of pho, spring rolls, and rice plates, the menu here features boba drinks, milkshakes, fruity sodas, yogurt blended drinks, coffee, and juices, along with over a dozen cold Vietnamese desserts. What's more, the milkshakes and juices come in a wide variety of flavors, including a bunch that are far more unique than your basic strawberry and vanilla, such as soursop, durian, iced tamarind, and salted kumquat. Now, unfortunately, despite how interesting just about all of the Vietnamese desserts sounded, I have to admit that I've only managed to try the drinks here (always end up feeling too full after eating at the other stands). The two times I've been, I ended up getting their STRAWBERRY BANANA MILKSHAKE ($8, large) and a MANGO MILKSHAKE ($8, large). Even though they're called "milkshakes", the consistency more closely resembles a smoothie - instead of thick and creamy, both were more moderately thick and icy. That being said, both tasted pretty good. The mango one had a nice hit of mango flavor to it while the strawberry banana was great even though I couldn't taste much of the banana. What's more, neither were overly sweet and they both hit the spot considering how hot it was outside. Considering how pretty much every photo and review on here mentions their desserts in some form or fashion, it's pretty obvious that I've yet to try the best things that Hien Khanh Dakao has to offer. From the looks of the photos, I almost feel compelled to come back for their Suong Sa Hat Luu, Thai's Dessert, and their 3 Color Dessert. Of course, that's to say nothing of their 3 Color Zongzi (3 color glutinous rice with pork belly and egg wrapped in lotus leaf) that looks amazing and the fact that the yogurt blended drinks look far better than the milkshakes. With summer back again and more trips planned to hit up more spots in San Jose, I'll definitely be back to try more! THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded up.

    mochi balls with coconut
    Celina N.

I wanted some Vietnamese dessert, so I stopped by this spot and ordered their mochi balls with coconut inside, I love the chewy texture and the coconut goes well with the mochi. It was 5 for $9 plus a 3% charge since I was paying with card. Tbh I feel like it's a little bit overpriced for just 5.

They have many things like bubble drinks and my favorite dessert which many don't have. It's one of the few places that offers it. It's why I chose to come here after visiting the main library. I will be back if I am down here. Especially when I am eating at the Chinese restaurant.

Quick and fast service! Located inside of grand century mall in the food court. It is loud and busy inside. I always like mine with no sugar syrup added and no coconut milk sub coconut juice. They don't skimp out on the toppings and it is always refreshing after a meal. All kinds of Vietnamese desserts offered here.

    Che Thai

I stopped by here since I was shopping for jewelry in the Grand Century Mall. I always wanted to stop by this place and I finally had the chance to try out some desserts since I have a huge sweet tooth. I ordered some Che Thai and some Che from the hot bar. The Che from the hot bar was way better than the Che Thai. My husband really enjoyed the corn Che. The Che Thai was sour and not sure if the milk went bad.

This is one of the food courts in the Grand Century shopping mall. Yesterday I picked five items including white beans, kidney beans, grass jellies, taro and pandan jellies with coconut milk for $7.50. Price is decent but the texture is soft and mushy. Not really tasty. :( Service was great.

Came here for a few sweets after dinner. I was pretty shocked to see a majority of the businesses already closed up for the night and Hien Khanh Dakao was in the process of doing the same thing. The unfortunate part was the super limited options currently available and they were not any of the items we strictly came here for. Factoring in our bad timing, we made due and placed an order for: -Nuoc Rau Ma Dau Xanh [Pennyworth Juice with Mung Bean] x2 -Che 3 Mau [3 color dessert] -Suong Sa Hat Luu x2 [rainbow dessert] Price is pretty high for what was actually provided and it's even funnier that they were stingy @ closing time. Most businesses would gladly load up your order to prevent from wasting but whatever. Desserts were overall good and the chewy items had the perfect amount of chew to them. Juices were alright but the pennyworth tasted muted & more bland than I'm used to having. The ice cubes just made it even more watery. Customer service from one employee was short. I'm assuming it was due to us disrupting their process to close but isn't any business good during a time like this??? 3 stars and that might be me being generous. Meh.

The good: I've been here many times since they first opened years ago. Recently, I took my 102-year old grandma here and we got the halo jello che, che ba mau (3 color che), and suong sa hat luu che. They were all very tasty and large. You could share one che with 2 people. Each che was around $7-8. They also sell smoothies and milk teas. I like the freshly grated ice that goes atop the che. My family also likes to get the green pandan chewy balls (with coconut inside) that they sell. The halo jello che was refreshing with coconut juice and had cute pink heart-shaped jellies inside. I liked the fresh pieces of coconut meat in that dessert. The bad: I think the halo jello was supposed to have mango pieces but I don't recall seeing that in my drink. The interesting: There is seating right in front that are swivel chairs. It has a fun retro mall-cafeteria feel. Dakao is a city south of Saigon. I asked my aunt if they're known for che and she said "I think so." My husband still thinks beans as a dessert is a little weird but when it's covered in sweet coconut cream it is definitely a treat. The red balls in the suong sa hat luu che is meant to resemble pomegranate seeds. They're often crunchy on the inside because it is made with water chestnuts.

Chè ba màu and chè thái (coconut milk in chè thái was watered down and you could only taste durian)
    Tiffany T.

They are NOT USING GLOVES AT ALL. Even without COVID-19 you are still required to use gloves when preparing food. I ordered the chè thái and chè ba màu. [Chè thái]: The coconut milk was clearly watered down and all I could taste was durian. It tasted good (because I love durian) but everyone who loves chè KNOWS that the coconut milk is the best part. It was also $7 which was pretty shocking considering the lack of coconut flavor. [Chè ba màu]: The coconut milk was stronger in this one but I felt it was still lacking. My mom and sister enjoyed this one though. Overall the jellies, beans, and fruit in both chès were good and tasted fresh. I just really enjoy my chè with a strong coconut milk. Won't be returning due to the lack of gloves. There are better chè places to try!

What I had: - Lychee Matcha (double matcha, regular sweet, regular ice) - Yuzu Matcha (double matcha, regular sweet, regular ice). Double matcha was not overly strong or caffeinating to me (love that they do not charge extra for this option btw)- my caff tolerance I'd say is relatively high or above average for sure. Surprisingly, at that matcha level the taste is not overly bitter at all. And the regular sweet is perfect (I normally get 50% sweet at boba shops). Same with the ice level, I think their regular ice level is fine (I normally get less ice at boba shops). The Lychee matcha has great lychee taste, not artificial tasting, it's a great blend of both lychee + matcha. The Yuzu is leaning towards the 'lemonade' profile without being overly citrusy. More refreshing than the lychee matcha, but both are refreshing anyways due to the nature of their flavors! I think I prefer the lychee matcha normally, honestly hard to say which flavor is better! I thoroughly enjoyed both these drinks! Their flavors are blended well with the matcha- not overly sweet in flavor, and matcha is great quality while not overly powerful or bitter. Drinks are of course mixed well and composed nearly perfectly. ---How I Rate on Yelp:--- (5 stars): Exceptional!! -- food, service, and atmosphere all outstanding. Worth going out of your way. (4 stars): Great! -- very good experience overall, minor flaws but nothing major. (3 stars): Good -- decent, acceptable, but there's room for clear improvement. (2 stars): Poor -- disappointing experience, multiple issues (food, service, or setting). (1 star): Terrible -- very bad experience, would not return or recommend.

The service is great, and they make your drinks very fast. The taste is very consistent, and they do have a large menu with lots of different items other than matcha. My only downside is the variety of matcha over the recent year. From last year and this year, the menu for matcha has not changed much, and it seems like I get the same taste every time I go. While the first time was enjoyable, after it just gets repetitive. I love Izumi, but I really wish there was a rotation between drinks.
