Love this spot. When I first moved here five years ago, it was the first spot recommended to me, and I've enjoyed going ever since. The bar team is so talented, and I love I can come and try something new (and well made) and trust them to serve up something delicious. This place is so cute. How can it can be relaxing and lit at the same time?! During the day, Tryst keeps a calmer vibe. Coffee and pastries and the like. Self-seating with table service. People on laptops working hard or hardly working. It truly is a community living room. And, if you're hungry, the food is FIRE. I had the Kale Salad and added bacon (yummmm!) I also tried one of their phenomenal loose leaf teas--the Remember Rosemary green tea. The prices are pretty reasonable. Towards the evening, the place livens up. I mean there is a bar so I'm not surprised. The staff is super friendly and down to earth. Great service. Tryst perplexes me ... but in a good way. It somehow successfully melds a coffee house, a romantic restaurant, and a nice drinking establishment all into one. I always come to Tryst to get my night out in Adams Morgan started. When you first enter, it's apparent that Tryst is such a departure from the overly-crowded streets and neighboring, noisy establishments of AdMo. The atmosphere is mellow yet electric. You look around the large room and you can see people sipping on their coffees with laptops at one table, a couple sharing a meal by candlelight at the next, and diagonally across is a group imbibing on some of their house cocktails. (...or it's probably just me getting drunk off their delectably refreshing sangria...) Every time I visit, the staff is nice, helpful, and patient. Not only that but I think they might have the best carrot cake in the DMV area. The cake is super moist, while the icing is just sweet enough without being overly so. Usually, the carrot cakes I try end up giving me a headache/toothache from the icing, but I can actually finish a whole slice at Tryst without gagging on the sugar. That's a solid A+ in my book. We stayed at a hostel near here, we googled a coffee shop near us. This was our first option, it was busy around 11:30 am on a Saturday, you usually help yourself to find a place. Ariel (the lady who helped us and asked us if we were going to have breakfast) was so gentle and offered us to put 2 tables together. Great Admo spot for coffee and snacks--their chai cappuccino is to die for! Sooooo good! We had some chocolate pie and a slice of Oreo cake something or other, and these were both okay. I liked the chocolate pie more and my boyfriend liked the cake more. It's usually pretty crowded so it can be hard to find seats, but definitely come to try to the chai! Stopped by Tryst by Yelp recommendation. Cozy coffee spot with baked goods, beer and wine, a decent sized menu and obviously coffee. I had the Santa Cruz, a bagel with cream cheese and assorted herbs it was very good. Others had the quiche which they all enjoyed. The service was a little pokey but very friendly and nice, even when I spilt my entire water on the table. We also had cappuccino's and they came with two animal crackers, which was a cute touch. Amazing Irish Coffees! However, after waiting 4 years to finally to come here in the evening (when it turns into a bar...previously underaged), I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't more fun. I probably just had unrealistic expectations...I really wanted to sit on one of the couches, and they were all full. For some reason that was just a deal breaker for me. Being ones of the highly popular coffeeshouses in DC, I knew I had to spend at least one of my Work From Home (WFH) days here, but I was concerned of how distracting the environment may be. Typically I seek out quiet places to set up shop on my WFH days. Though the environment certainly wasn't the usual quietness I seek out, I still highly enjoyed the lively, busy atmosphere of this coffeehouse. With its spaciousness and the front panel glass doors being opened, this created a wondrous feeling of openness even though the place was packed with people. The decor and staff who work here definitely contribute to the uniqueness that makes Tryst such a popular spot amongst all demographics of customers. Stopped into Tryst on our way out of DC. The place had a cool vibe like much of the surrounding Adams Morgan area. It was quite busy and that's the reason I hope ours was not a typical dining experience. We were seated and our order was taken promptly enough. I ordered the locals only salmon bagel and my wife ordered waffles, we both ordered mochas. We had been waiting on our drinks for about ten minutes, when we heard another table speak up and say "I don't think this is hot chocolate". At this point my wife said, "I think they got our drinks." Our food arrived shortly thereafter. After waiting a total of 25 minutes, I spoke to one of the servers and let her know we never received our drinks and we thought they had been sent to the wrong table. Finally, they figured out oh yeh that's what happened and they proceeded to make our drinks. The server delivered them and apologized but offered nothing else. I'm not going to push someone to offer something a little extra or at a discount but I think it is or should be commonplace, when someone received drinks after food and well after placing an order. That being said, the mochas were very tasty and had a nice balance of espresso to chocolate without being overpowering. The salmon bagel was fresh and was complimented nicely by the lemon caper cream cheese and pickled red onion. My wife enjoyed her waffle as well. As stated earlier, I'm sure this doesn't happen often and I would dine here again if I'm ever back in the DC area. Small tables with chairs, couches and coffee tables, places by the fireplace (do they work?) where you can read a book, write a book, or talk with others. I was there to write a book, and enjoy a coffee. Waitstaff bring your orders straight to you, lest you lose your seat, and they don't mind you camping for hours. Just be sure to tip them. Their coffee is great, and that's with options. You can have a house drip or their french-press, whatever your pleasure, and I like that. And, if you want to get drunk, then good news! It's a bar as well. Their food menu is really... bohemian. They didn't serve eggs, which is less than ordinary, but they have black forest ham, and honey, and tasty bagels, among a wide variety of healthy items. I made my own sandwich, and the waiter actually took it down as a possible item to add to their menu. No matter, be prepared to try something different. Their baked goods looked good. I was well-cared for, and definitely would make that a regular hangout if I lived in DC. My fondest memory of that experience was when I reached the end of my stay. A trio was hovering around me, sensing my departure. One of them was wearing a legitimate sports racing jacket, and when I started to collect my things, he jumped on it like a tiger on it's prey. I ordered the iced coffee... and was told it isn't the typical iced coffee because they brew it differently. It tasted worse than crappy coffee with ice thrown in it. It was like drinking burnt coffee beans in ice water. My friend's cappuccino was also horrible. They used too hot of water and it also had a horrible burnt coffee taste. There's been a lot of new coffee shops in DC and this level of quality isn't good. They seriously need to up their game. The flavor is good but next time I'd ask them if they could make it with about half the sweetness, I ended up having to order a black coffee to counteract the sweetness and make it drinkable and even with equal parts coffee it was still really sweet. Why doesn't every coffee house, every where make Lavender Lattes? Well, it's not currently happening, so when I find a place that does, while I'm in town, I take full advantage as much as possible. I love the vibe here for the most part. You can order at the counter which is strictly to-go or have to sit if you're dining in. There is a ton of space and from what it appears like every time I'm in, people meet there for a variety of reasons, breakfast, lunch, coffee, tea, wine, their pastries, live music, work and just casual encounters etc. There are counters with stools, community tables, couches, coffee tables and funky lazy boy like chairs. The one thing I've always experienced though is if you're staying there for your indulgence, whatever that may be, the employees there heavily enforce you not order at the counter and insist that you must sit and wait for your designated server once you've sat. We passed this place as we were walking back to the Metro and decided to peek in. Glad we did! It's a coffeeshop + bar! Genius! Hubby ordered a DC beer and I got a latte. We both enjoyed our drinks. Our tot enjoyed the animal crackers that came with my latte. Looks like a great place to come and relax, meet friends, or study (if you're ok with noise). Came here for an early brunch / late breakfast with a friend after we did a [solidcore] class around the corner. Needless to say, we were hungry! My friend ordered a tea and I got a chai tea latte. The latte was delicious. She said her tea was good too. From there, I ordered the breakfast burrito, she ordered the quiche, and we got the chocolate waffle to share. The burrito was very good and very filling. She said the quiche was pretty good too, but the crust was too thick and not all the way cooked through in places. The chocolate waffle was delicious though. It was definitely chocolatey, but it wasn't sickeningly sweet, which was what I was expecting (this is a good thing!). It also came with some strawberries and Nutella on top. I could go for another one of those waffles now! While this place has full table service, it definitely has coffee shop vibes.
